Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Will there be accessibility measures at the Forum?
In short, yes! AWID is currently working with an Accessibility Committee to ensure that the Forum is as accessible as possible. We are also conducting an accessibility audit of the Forum venue, surrounding hotels and transportation. Biography
Alejandra es una apasionada de los derechos de las mujeres y la justicia de género. Sueña con crear un mundo centrado en el cuidado de las personas y de la naturaleza. Como experta feminista en derechos humanos, ha trabajado en las intersecciones de la justicia de género, climática, social y económica en varias organizaciones internacionales. Sus áreas de experticia incluyen la construcción de conocimiento y de la creación conjunta, la investigación, la facilitación y la incidencia. Tiene un título de maestría de la Universidad de Essex, y es autora y colaboradora de muchas publicaciones, que incluyen el artículo «Enraged: Women and Nature». La campaña Feminist Activism Without Fear se basa en entrevistas e investigaciones realizadas por Alejandra.
Nacida en Argentina, durante las últimas dos décadas ha vivido y trabajado en varios países de Europa y América Latina. En esta selección de películas encontrarán las voces de realizadoras que no solo se contentan con plasmar las realidades feministas que palpitan en cada rincón de este vasto y diverso territorio sino también trabajos que desde su gestación misma están cuestionando el para qué, quién y cómo se hace cine o audiovisual. Realizadoras o colectivos que entienden al cine como una herramienta de lucha, como algo más que imágenes que se disfrutan en una pantalla, que ven al cine y al audiovisual como instrumentos para potenciar una discusión o abrir un debate; en fin, como un recurso para la pedagogía popular y feminista.

Yes, we encourage institutional membership.
AWID currently has hundreds of prominent, innovative organizations working on issues related to women’s rights and development as members. Criteria for membership are the same as for individuals, although membership fees and membership benefits are different, and are geared to address the needs of our member organizations.

Abby était une féministe pionnière, militante des droits humains.
Ancienne épidémiologiste de l'Université McGill, Abby était réputée pour défendre les causes sociales et pour ses critiques perspicaces concernant les technologies de procréation humaine assistée et d'autres sujets médicaux. Plus précisément, elle a fait campagne contre ce qu'elle a appelé la « généticisation » des technologies de procréation, contre l'hormonothérapie substitutive et pour des recherches plus qualitatives et plus longues avant l'approbation de nouveaux vaccins comme celui contre le papillomavirus humain.
À la nouvelle de son décès, ses ami-e-s et collègues l'ont décrite avec affection comme une « ardente défenseure » de la santé des femmes.
