Memory as Resistance: A Tribute to WHRDs no longer with us

AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us. 


In 2020, we are taking a turn

This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.

49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.

This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.

The stories of activists we honour keep their legacy alive and carry their inspiration forward into our movements’ future work.

The Tribute was first launched in 2012

It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.

To date, 467 feminists and WHRDs are featured.

Desde el verano (boreal) de 2015, Idomenei, un pueblo ubicado en la frontera entre Grecia y Macedonia, albergó el campamento no oficial de personas refugiadas mås grande de Grecia. A fines de mayo de 2016, las autoridades lo cerraron. Desde hace ya un año, Marianna Karakoulaki, una joven originaria de otra ciudad pequeña pero en el noroeste del país, ha venido cubriendo la crisis de las personas refugiadas en Idomenei como periodista independiente.

Feminismo, un hilo conductor rojo

El feminismo ha sido un hilo conductor rojo que recorre todas las experiencias, la formación y el desempeño laboral de Marianna a lo largo de su vida. Considera que: «desde siempre me he identificado con el feminismo, sin saber qué era», ya en su adolescencia y durante sus estudios de Maestría en Seguridad Internacional en la Universidad de Birmingham, Reino Unido. Marianna hizo frente a crisis depresivas esporådicas y ademås de estudiar los movimientos y las luchas por la igualdad, el feminismo la ha inspirado y le ha aportado un nuevo enfoque «pråcticamente sobre todas las cosas».

En su trabajo, Marianna intenta abordar temåticas feministas para hacer que se escuchen las voces de los mårgenes sobre todo en Grecia  «ya que los temas de género son ignorados o no se los cubre como se debería».

Pero aunque lleva mås de un año informando sobre la crisis de las personas refugiadas ha tratado, en forma deliberada, de evitar escribir sobre las mujeres refugiadas. 

 «La razón principal es que no quiero entrometerme en las vidas de las mujeres refugiadas solo para obtener una buena nota; escuché algunas historias dignas de ser publicadas, pero nunca sentí que fuera apropiado hacerlo porque son personas en una posición de vulnerabilidad. Es necesario que se escuchen sus voces pero hay un momento adecuado para hacerlo y para mí ese momento serå cuando por fin lleguen a un espacio seguro donde estén protegidas.» - Marianna Karakoulaki

Un poco mĂĄs acerca de Marianna

En su trabajo académico actual, es una de las directoras y editoras de E- International Relations [Relaciones internacionales electrónicas; E-IR], una publicación académica en línea para la que estå editando un libro sobre migraciones en el siglo XXI que se publicarå este año. Marianna también ha dictado varios talleres en Grecia sobre igualdad de género, otras temåticas de género y la diversidad de los feminismos. Escribió artículos académicos y periodísticos sobre el derecho al aborto en Estados Unidos así como sobre temåticas feministas y de mujeres en Medio Oriente.

Marianna se afiliĂł a AWID porque:

«...es una organización cuyas åreas prioritarias son muy afines a mi ideología y a lo que yo priorizo. También porque le da voz a quienes viven en zonas del mundo desde las que no pueden ser escuchadas, y eso me gusta.»

En respuesta a la pregunta sobre qué cambios le gustaría ver en su vida, Marianna afirmó:

«Si tuviera que elegir un cambio que quiero ver en mi vida, serĂ­a una igualdad producto de un enfoque ‘desde abajo hacia arriba’. Eso llevarĂĄ tiempo, esfuerzo y dedicaciĂłn, asĂ­ como una revisiĂłn de las tĂĄcticas y la estrategia de los movimientos. TambiĂ©n tengo el sueño utĂłpico de un mundo sin naciones ni fronteras, cuya base sea la organizaciĂłn autĂłnoma, pero eso es bastante imposible.»

Sans frontiĂšres ni barriĂšres

Depuis l’étĂ© 2005, Idomeni, un village situĂ© Ă  la frontiĂšre grĂ©co-macĂ©donienne, est progressivement devenu le plus vaste camp officieux de rĂ©fugiĂ©-e-s de GrĂšce. À la fin du mois de mai, ce camp a Ă©tĂ© fermĂ© par les autoritĂ©s. Et depuis maintenant un an, Marianna Karakoulaki, une jeune journaliste indĂ©pendante originaire d’une petite ville du nord-ouest du pays, couvre les Ă©vĂ©nements qui se produisent dans ce village.

Marianna a aussi couvert les manifestations et les Ă©meutes qui se sont dĂ©roulĂ©es principalement Ă  Thessalonique, la ville oĂč elle vit depuis quelques annĂ©es. Outre le travail qu’elle effectue pour diffĂ©rents mĂ©dias, dont Deutsche Welle (DW), IRIN News et the Middle East Eye, elle rĂ©alise Ă©galement des reportages pour la tĂ©lĂ©vision. Elle a rĂ©cemment co-rĂ©alisĂ© un reportage d’actualitĂ©, Macedonia: Tracking down the refugee kidnap gangs (MacĂ©doine : sur la trace des gangs qui kidnappent les rĂ©fugiĂ©s, en anglais), qui a remportĂ© plusieurs prix dont celui  du meilleur reportage d’actualitĂ© pour la tĂ©lĂ©vision dĂ©cernĂ© par l’Association de la presse Ă©trangĂšre Ă  Londres.

Le féminisme, un fil rouge

« Je me sens absolument fĂ©ministe, sans aucune rĂ©serve. Mon fĂ©minisme fait partie de mon identitĂ©, tout comme mon athĂ©isme et mes convictions politiques de gauche. »​ – Marianna Karakoulaki

Le fĂ©minisme a Ă©tĂ© le fil rouge de la vie, de l’éducation et du travail de Marianna. Elle a l’impression « de s’ĂȘtre toujours sentie fĂ©ministe, mĂȘme quand elle ne savait pas encore vraiment ce que ce mot signifiait », et ce depuis son adolescence et tout au long de ses Ă©tudes de master en sĂ©curitĂ© internationale Ă  l’universitĂ© de Birmingham, au Royaume-Uni. Pendant les Ă©pisodes dĂ©pressifs occasionnels qu’elle a connu et pendant toutes ses annĂ©es d’études des mouvements et de la lutte pour l’égalitĂ©, le fĂ©minisme l’a inspirĂ©e et lui a permis d’adopter une nouvelle approche « d’à peu prĂšs tout ».

« Il [le fĂ©minisme] a entiĂšrement changĂ© mon orientation acadĂ©mique, mon idĂ©ologie politique et mon approche de la vie au sens large. C’est la raison pour laquelle je porte toujours autour du cou le poing fĂ©ministe. » - Marianna Karakoulaki

Dans le cadre de son travail, Marianna tente de se consacrer aux questions fĂ©ministes en donnant la possibilitĂ© Ă  celles qui sont relĂ©guĂ©es Ă  la marge de s’exprimer, notamment en GrĂšce oĂč « les questions relatives au genre sont soit ignorĂ©es soit insuffisamment prises en charge ».

Elle travaille  depuis un an sur la crise des rĂ©fugiĂ©-e-s, mais elle a dĂ©libĂ©rĂ©ment Ă©vitĂ© d’écrire un article sur les femmes rĂ©fugiĂ©es.

« J’ai pris cette dĂ©cision tout d’abord parce que je ne voulais pas faire intrusion dans la vie de ces femmes dans le simple but de dĂ©nicher une bonne histoire. J’ai entendu des rĂ©cits qui auraient mĂ©ritĂ©es d’ĂȘtre publiĂ©es mais, sans vraiment savoir pourquoi, je ne me suis jamais sentie autorisĂ©e Ă  raconter la vie de ces personnes dans telle situation de vulnĂ©rabilitĂ©. Il faut que leurs voix soient entendues, mais il y a un bon moment pour le faire, et je pense qu’il faut attendre qu’elles atteignent enfin un espace sĂ»r dans laquelle leur protection est assurĂ©e. »  - Marianna Karakoulaki

Quelques informations complémentaires sur Marianna

Dans le cadre acadĂ©mique, elle est membre de l’équipe de direction et de rĂ©daction de E- International Relations (E-IR), un site acadĂ©mique pour lequel elle dirige la publication d’un livre sur les migrations au XXIe  siĂšcle, Ă  paraĂźtre fin 2016. Marianna a Ă©galement dispensĂ© des cours lors de diffĂ©rents ateliers organisĂ©s en GrĂšce sur l’égalitĂ© de genre, les questions de genre et la diversitĂ© des fĂ©minismes. Elle a Ă©galement Ă©crit des articles sur le droit Ă  l’avortement notamment aux États-Unis mais aussi sur les questions fĂ©ministes ou relatives aux femmes dans le Moyen-Orient.

 

Marianna explique comme suit sa dĂ©cision de devenir membre de l’AWID :

 

« Je suis devenue membre de l’AWID parce qu’il s’agit d’une organisation dont les domaines d’action prioritaires sont trĂšs proches de mon idĂ©ologie et de mes prĂ©occupations et qui donne la parole aux personnes du monde entier que l’on entend jamais, et j’aime beaucoup cela. »  

À la question « quel changement aimeriez-vous voir se matĂ©rialiser de votre vivant ? », Marianna apportĂ© cette rĂ©ponse :

« Si je devais choisir un changement que j’aimerais voir survenir de mon vivant, ce serait l’instauration d’une Ă©galitĂ© issue d’une approche venue de la base ; cela demandera du temps, des efforts et du dĂ©vouement. Cela exigera Ă©galement une refonte des tactiques et stratĂ©gies des mouvements. Je fais aussi le rĂȘve utopique d’un monde sans nations ni frontiĂšres fondĂ© sur l’auto-organisation, mais je crains que cela ne soit pas possible. »

Without Borders and Barriers

“Don’t give up fighting because the struggle is not over; it has just begun”. – Marianna Karakoulaki

Since the summer of 2015, Idomeni, a village at the Greek-Macedonian border, has increasingly turned into a site of the largest unofficial refugee camp in Greece. At the end of May it was shut down by authorities. For a year now, Marianna Karakoulaki, a young woman originally from a small town in the north-western part of the country has been covering the refugee crisis in Idomeni as a freelance journalist.

Marianna has also been covering social protests and riots, mostly from Thessaloniki where she has been living for the past couple of years. Reporting for several media outlets, including Deutsche Welle (DW), IRIN News, and the Middle East Eye, she additionally produces TV reports, recently being part of a  Channel 4 News production: Macedonia: tracking down the refugee kidnap gangs which has won several awards including ‘TV News Story of the Year’ from Foreign Press Association in London.

Feminism, a red thread

“I absolutely and without any doubt identify as a feminist, it’s part of my identity along with being an atheist and a leftist.” – Marianna Karakoulaki

Throughout Marianna’s experiences, education and work, feminism has been a red thread throughout her life. She feels she has “always identified with feminism, without actually knowing what it was”, from her teen years and all through her Master’s degree studies in International Security at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. Marianna has countered occasional bouts of depression, and alongside studying about movements and the struggle for equality, feminism has inspired and given her a new approach to “pretty much everything”.

In her work, Marianna tries to focus on feminist subjects aiming to give voice to those on the margins especially in Greece seeing “gender related issues are either ignored or not covered as they should be.”  

But even though she has been reporting about the refugee crisis for the past year, she has been, as she tells us, deliberately avoiding writing a story on refugee women.

“The main reason for that is that I don’t really want to intrude in refugee women’s lives just for the sake of a good story; I have heard some stories that would have been worth publishing, but for a reason it never felt right as these people are in a vulnerable position. Their voice needs to be heard but there is the right moment for that and for me this is when they finally reach a safe space where they are protected.” - Marianna Karakoulaki

A bit more about Marianna

In her current academic work, she is one of the directors and editors of E- International Relations (E-IR), an online academic publication, where she is currently editing a book on migration in the 21st century due to be published in late 2016. Marianna has also taught at several workshops in Greece on gender equality, gender issues, and the diversity of feminisms and has written papers and articles on abortion rights specifically in the United States of America, as well as about feminist and women’s issues in the Middle East.

Marianna joined AWID as a member because:

“I joined AWID as it’s an organization where its priority areas are very close to my ideology and focus, plus it is giving a voice to those in parts of the world that cannot be heard, and I like that.”

And in answer to the question “what change would you like to see in your lifetime?” Marianna responded:

“If I had to choose a change that I’d like to see in my lifetime, that would be equality that will come from a bottoms-up approach; that will demand time, effort, and devotion. It will also demand a re-approach of the movements’ tactics and strategy. I also have a utopian dream of a world without nations and borders based on self-organisation, but that is rather impossible.”

Challenging the economic growth model

Context

Contesting the premise that a country’s economy must always ‘grow or die’, de-growth propositions come to debunk the centrality of growth measured by increase in Gross domestic product (GDP).

Definition

A de-growth model proposes a shift towards a lower and sustainable level of production and consumption. In essence, shrinking the economic system to leave more space for human cooperation and ecosystems.

The proposal includes

  • Downsizing resource-, energy- and emission-intensive superfluous production, particularly in the North (e.g. the automotive and military industries)
  • Directing investments instead into the care sector, social infrastructure and environmental restoration

Feminist perspective

Feminist perspectives within de-growth theory and practice argue that it also needs to redefine and revalidate unpaid and paid, care and market labour to overcome traditional gender stereotypes as well as the prevailing wage gaps and income inequalities that devalue care work.

Selection of Forum activities

For each AWID Forum we call for contributions from a wide range of feminist and social justice movements to propose activities and create the Forum program.

For the 14th AWID international Forum, we want to make the program truly representative of the diversity of the movements.

That is why we put in place a new and engaging way to choose the proposals that will generate the final Forum program: the Participatory Selection Process (PSP).

What is the Participatory Selection Process (PSP)?

The Participatory Selection Process is the final step in reviewing the activity proposals and selecting those that will be part of the official Forum program. 

This is how it works: 

  1. Activity proposals have originally been submitted via our Call for Forum Activities, open to everyone - groups and individuals - interested in presenting their feminist reality at the Forum.
  2. Out of all the activities submitted, AWID staff pre-selects the ones best reflecting the Forum theme and presenting a creative approach for audience engagement.
  3. Activities are then reviewed and short-listed by different Forum Committees to ensure a good diversity of regions, movements and ideas.
  4. The selected proposals are then reviewed and rated by individuals and groups whose proposals have also been short-listed. The proposals which receive the most votes from fellow candidates will become part of the final Forum program.

Why did AWID decide to organize a PSP for the 14th AWID Forum activities?

We think a PSP is relevant for the AWID Forum because:

  • It places at the centre of the decision making process the communities who live the feminist realities that will be showcased and discussed at the Forum 

  • It is consistent with our identity and our role as a movement support/ accompaniment organization. 

  • It is in line with our vision of the Forum as co-created with different feminist and social justice movements, who shape the Forum through their participation in committees (content and methodology, access, artivist and host country), creating and facilitating activities as partners with AWID and also making decisions about the Program through the PSP.

  • It allows for greater diversity in the textures that will make up the Forum fabric (or in the voices that will compose the Forum song). It ensures we go beyond AWID itself and the movement partners that we already know and work with. It opens the door to the unexpected.

How did AWID come up with this PSP idea?

This is the first time AWID is considering such a process.

The initial idea came from AWID’s Co-EDs and staff. Before committing to a decision, we consulted some of the community funds that have been implementing participatory selection processes for years. These included FRIDA: The Young Feminists Fund, the International Trans Fund, UHAI - East Africa’s fund for sexual minorities and sex workers - and the Central American Women’s Fund. We consulted them to learn from their extensive experiences and get their feedback.

Introduction to the films from Nuestramérica

What a difficult task, that of condensing all the power and diversity of voices being raised in Latin America to tell the other stories emerging in this vast territory, to speak of the feminist realities we are building in our movement and other community-based organizations.

I spent a long time trying to establish parameters for the search and selection of these films, with the idea that they  would enable you to get a little closer to so many dreams and projects that are slowly coming into being in the territories Nuestroamericanos, of our Americas, as we like to call them ourselves. It was a tough job trying to establish parameters, such as geographic location, linguistic justice, and representation of diverse communities — Indigenous, Afro-descendants, migrants  — and the many causes and claims for which they raise their voices. I arrived at the conclusion that making such a compilation would be the work of years, one of those projects always under construction.

And so I decided to search for works that have emerged out of organizing and activism, as well as films that will perhaps spark major debates that we are yet to have.

In this selection of films you will find the voices of filmmakers who are not content with simply recording the feminist realities that palpitate in every corner of this vast and diverse territory. These are works that from their very conceptualization are questioning for what, by whom, and how films and videos are made. They understand film to be an instrument of struggle,  something more than images to be enjoyed on a screen. These are individual or collective filmmakers who see film and video making as an instrument to promote discussion, open a debate, and thus serve as a resource for popular and feminist pedagogies.

Seen in this light, this small film selection is a journeythrough feminist realities on two levels; on one level are the stories you will see, and on another level, there is the experimentation of filmmakers who are seeking and creating other feminist realities through the ways in which they are making films and telling stories.

Lima is Burning

In Lima is Burning our work plays with documentary and fiction to take us into the life of Gía, a non-binary person, who uses performance art as a tool to denounce and transgress, as a vital manifesto against transfobia in every space, including gays spaces. With Gía we also take a look at transfeminism as a safe community in which Gía feels embraced, where she shares feelings and affections. 

Giovana Garcia Sojo is a young peruvian audiovisual producer, specialized in low-budget production, creation for children and adolescents in cinema and cinematographic script by the International School of Cinema and Television - EICTV in San Antonio de Baños - Cuba. Giovana has developed her path as a director towards women and feminized identities, Lima is Burning is one of her first works.  


Yo, Imposible / Being Impossible

Patricia Ortega, director of «Yo, Imposible» [“Being Impossible”] explores through the character of Ariel, a young girl whose  intersex body was surgically violated as a child, the many ways that society attempts to normalize sexual and gender diversity.

The film tells the story of how Ariel discovers she was born intersex and subjected to several surgeries to normalize her genitals. This discovery leads the character to rediscover her body and reconstruct her identity. The audience is led to question a society dominated by heteronormativity which renders others invisible and condemns them to a life of unhappiness. 

Patricia Ortega is a Venezuelan filmmaker living in Argentina who studied at the International School of Film and Television in Cuba, where she specialized in film directing. Patricia uses fiction to address extreme situations that women or feminized bodies go through, and how they overcome them.

«Yo, Imposible»' takes a position vis-Ă -vis the dominant conception of a world in which only the masculine and feminine exist, which makes others invisible. “They are not sick. They are just genetically different. Interventions are done on their genitals and bodies through hormones without their consent, which is a violation of their human rights and identity, forcing them to fit into established categories'' - Patricia Ortega


Cubanas, mujeres en revoluciĂłn [Cuban Women in Revolution]

MarĂ­a Torrellas narrates the story of the Cuban Revolution through the women who brought it to life, Vilma EspĂ­n, Celia SĂĄnchez, and Haydee SantamarĂ­a, among others.

For women, telling the story of the Cuban Revolution is not something of the past, but a daily struggle that Torrellas shows through the voices of Cuban rural women, professionals, students, and workers in the present. In “Cuban Women in Revolution” we encounter the current challenges facing Cuban women such as the persistence of old prejudices, new forms of violence, and the constant challenge of creating new feminist realities for themselves and the next generations in a territory besieged by USA imperialism for more than 70 years.

MaĂ­ia Torrellas

María Torrellas is a journalist and documentary filmmaker. She has a long trajectory of filmmaking and has won, among others, the Santiago Alvarez in Memoriam award for her documentary “Memoria de una hija de Oshun” [Memory of a Daughter of Oshun].

“In the documentary I have woven together the struggles of yesterday’s heroines with those of today’s women. The women tell their own stories and also describe those whose struggles they most admire. It made an impression on me to hear the words ‘The Revolution gave us everything’ or ‘What would have become of my family without the Revolution?’ from voices of compañeras who are poor, rural, or Black.” - MarĂ­a Torrellas

CUIDANDERAS joins the words cuidar (to care for) and curanderas (women healers) synthesizing the identities of a series of women in Latin American territories, women who put their bodies and all their energy into protecting the Commons, what Pachamama gives us, with the commitment that we use it as wisely as the rest of living beings doThis mini series of documentary films presents the stories of three collectives of Latin American women who are committed to caring for their territories, healing their bodies, and confronting extractivist and racist projects in Ecuador, Colombia, and Bolivia.

GUARDIANAS DE LA AMAZONIA [GUARDIANS OF THE AMAZON]

Province of Orellana, Ecuador. For centuries the Waorani women have been engaged in a struggle for their territory in the Amazon and the preservation of their Indigenous culture. Today they confront threats by the oil industry and their death-production model. From the jungle, leaders from the Waorani Women’s Association of the Ecuadoran Amazon (AMWAE, in Spanish) share the motivation behind their resistance and show their greatest power: their inexhaustible joy.

COMADRES DEL PACÍFICO COLOMBIANO [BLACK SISTERHOOD OF THE PACIFIC]

Buenaventura, Colombia. In the largest and most violent port city in Colombia, plagued by decades of armed conflict, racism, and machismo, a group of women refuse to give in to fear and continue to resist in the face of adversity. The Butterflies with New Wings network is made up of Black women from the Pacific coast of Colombia who work together to protect their territory, recuperate their ancestral traditions, and heal the wounds of systematic and structural violence.

HERMANAS DEL ALTIPLANO [SISTERS OF THE HIGHLANDS]

Indigenous, rural, and regantes (women in charge of irrigation) in Bolivia are calling for the care and protection of bodies-earth-territories, as they are faced with an extractive production model which threatens their lives, health, physical and sexual integrity, and the survival of their communities and territories. The Network of Defenders of Mother Earth is made up of women from 12 Indigenous communities who are defending the right to water and denouncing mining companies’ violations of human rights and the rights of Nature while working to recuperate their ancestral ways of knowledge and practices of collective care.

If there is one thing that has marked feminist movements across the continent of Latin America that is the call for abortion to be made available, safe, and free. From North to South feminist movements are rising up and taking to the streets fighting for the liberation of our first territory, our bodies, which is why this selection must include a documentary on abortion to fully understand the power of the women of Nuestramérica.

Yo aborto, Tu Abortas, Todxs Callamos [I abort, you abort, we all keep silent] presents the stories of seven women from different social classes, including the director of the documentary herself, who reflect on something they have all experienced in their own bodies: clandestine abortion.  

Through their stories, the film aims to bust myths regarding the voluntary interruption of pregnancy, de-stigmatize the topic, and show one of the most common forms of violence in the Americas in a new light.

Carolina Reynoso

Director, researcher, and producer of feminist films. She is also a feminist activist who organizes workshops on screenwriting from a gender perspective so that more films are made showing other counterhegemonic realities and stories. Carolina Reynoso strikes a balance between activism and creation in each one of her works.

“We are a group of filmmakers who make documentaries in order to continue fighting to make abortion available, safe, and free in Argentina. The film presents the testimonies of seven women from different social classes, including the director of the documentary herself, who reflect on something they have all experienced in their own bodies: clandestine abortion.” -The filmmaking team

“Urgent Stories” is a series created by women to make their needs and important experiences visible to the people living in the territories that today comprise Chile. This film series aims to keep alive the flame ignited by the social uprising of October 2019, the flame ofChile in all its diversity that woke up and said, ‘Enough!’

«Resistencia en ollas comunes» [Resistance in the Soup Kitchens] is the first of these “Urgent Stories.” Through the voices of four women from Iquique, Valparaiso, Chillan and Santiago, it shows how by collectively assuming care work they are on the front lines of resistance, creating other feminist realities for themselves and the communities where Latin American women live.

This organization was formed in 2017 to link together women involved in the Chilean filmmaking scene. It helps women filmmakers to network, collaborate, and share information along with their works and perspectives on the field.

Nosotras Audiovisuales contributes to the Chilean uprising by documenting it and collectively generating new material.

Based on her personal experience, director Micol Metzner presents a film mixing documentary with fiction, aligning her filmmaker’s voice with that of thousands of women who have been victims of trafficking across the continent and showing how solidarity among women is the best form of protection.

Micol Metzner

Filmmaker trained at the Instituto de Arte CinematogrĂĄfico de Avellaneda [Avellaneda Institute of Film Arts]. Art director and editor. Metzner belongs to the Video Cluster of the City of Buenos Aires, a community space and multisectorial cooperative for independent projects.

She facilitates filmmaking workshops in working class neighbourhoods and spaces of enclosure (youth group homes and women’s prisons). She is a member of the film production house MVM.

“The production house MVM was born out of the necessity to express a lot of things that we regularly protest on the streets about while also doing it in a creative way through drawing, film, and photography.The production house MVM is a place that interrogates language, image, film from a feminist perspective. It is also a place for processing everything we have gone through and using art to make things sometimes to heal, sometimes to generate public debate as happened with this short film
I didn’t imagine that was going to happen, but when we showed  it,  a lot of things were set  in motion. Discussions happen that are even more enriching than the short film itself. That this can happen based on something we made is so good

Alors que les fondamentalismes, les fascismes et autres systĂšmes d’oppression se mĂ©tamorphosent et trouvent de nouvelles tactiques et stratĂ©gies pour consolider leur pouvoir et influence, les mouvements fĂ©ministes persĂ©vĂšrent et cĂ©lĂšbrent leurs victoires nationales, rĂ©gionales et internationales.

Un groupe de femmes reconstitue la marche des femmes de 1956 Ă  Pretoria pour protester contre les lois sur les laissez-passer.

La reconnaissance en 2019 par le Conseil des droits de l’Homme du droit Ă  l’intĂ©gritĂ© et Ă  l’autonomie corporelles, par exemple, a marquĂ© une Ă©tape cruciale. Des rĂ©solutions du Conseil sur la discrimination envers les femmes et les filles admettent cependant un recul liĂ© Ă  des groupes de pression rĂ©trogrades, des conceptions idĂ©ologiques ou un dĂ©tournement de la culture ou la religion pour s’opposer Ă  l’égalitĂ© de leurs droits. Des avancĂ©es fĂ©ministes sont aussi notĂ©es dans le travail des ProcĂ©dures spĂ©ciales, qui soulignent notamment l’obligation des États de contrer les doctrines de l’idĂ©ologie du genre, rappellent Ă  l’ordre les antidroits qui dĂ©tournent des rĂ©fĂ©rences Ă  la « culture », et signalent que les convictions religieuses ne peuvent pas servir Ă  justifier la violence ou la discrimination.
