Memory as Resistance: A Tribute to WHRDs no longer with us
AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us.
In 2020, we are taking a turn
This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.
49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.
This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.
The stories of activists we honour keep their legacy alive and carry their inspiration forward into our movements’ future work.
The portraits of the 2020 edition are designed by award winning illustrator and animator, Louisa Bertman.
AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these activists and WHRDs and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

The Tribute was first launched in 2012
It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.
To date, 467 feminists and WHRDs are featured.

Обеспечение ресурсами феминистских движений имеет основополагающее значение для обеспечения более справедливого и мирного настоящего и свободного будущего.
За последнее десятилетие спонсоры выделили значительно больше средств на обеспечение гендерного равенства, однако лишь 1% средств, выделенных на благотворительность и развитие был направлен непосредственно на поддержку социальных изменений, проводимых под руководством феминисток.
В солидарности с движениями, которые по-прежнему остаются невидимыми, маргинализированными и не имеют доступа к основному, долгосрочному, гибкому и основанному на доверии финансированию, данный опрос освещает фактическое состояние ресурсного обеспечения, выявляет ошибочные решения и указывает на то, как необходимо изменить модели финансирования, чтобы движения процветали и решали сложные задачи современного мира.
2010: The fourth High-level Dialogue is held
The theme of the Fourth High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development, 23-24 March 2010: The Monterrey Consensus and Doha Declaration on Financing for Development: status of implementation and tasks ahead. It had four round tables on: the reform of the international monetary and financial systems; impact of the financial crisis on foreign direct investments; international trade and private flows; and the role of financial and technical development cooperation, including innovative sources of development finance, in leveraging the mobilization of domestic and international financial resources for development.
There was also the informal interactive dialogue involving various stakeholders that focused on the link between financing for development and achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
Anna Campbell (şehid Hêlîn Qerecox)
Anna grew up in Lewes, Sussex (UK) and, after deciding not to pursue her English degree at Sheffield University, she moved to Bristol and became a plumber.
She spent much of her time defending the marginalised and under-privileged, attending anti-fascist rallies, and offering support to the women of Dale Farm when they were threatened with eviction. A vegan and animal lover, she attended hunt sabotages and her name is honoured on PETA's 'Tree of Life' Memorial. Anna went to Rojava in May 2017 with a strong commitment to women's empowerment, full representation of all ethnicities and protection of the environment.
Anna died on March 15, 2018 when she was hit by a Turkish airstrike in the town of Afrin, northern Syria. Anna was fighting with the Women's Protection Forces (YPJ), when she was killed.

Ces notions sont maintenant devenues la cible d’acteur·ice·s antidroits qui prétendent que les rôles de genre patriarcaux oppressifs relèvent du « bon sens », peignant stratégiquement toutes les autres idées, normes culturelles et formes de vie sociale comme une idéologie dangereuse et conspirationniste.

- El Borrador Cero del documento (con fecha 16 de marzo), preparado por los facilitadores, fue difundido para su discusión durante la segunda sesión redactora a realizarse del 13 al 17 de abril de 2015.
- Durante la sesión de apertura, el WWG pidió que se incorporara al Borrador Cero la asignación de recursos específicamente para la igualdad de género y el empoderamiento de las mujeres, tal como lo estipulan el Consenso de Monterrey y la Declaración de Doha.
Annaliza Dinopol Gallardo Capinpin
Conocida como «Ate Liza», Annaliza era la presidenta del Consejo de la Reforma Agraria para lxs Pionerxs de Mindanao, un grupo coodinador general en Tacurong City, Filipinas.
Querida madre de cuatro hijxs, maestra y líder comunitaria, Annaliza es recordada por su comunidad como «la que lidera cuando nadie quiere liderar, la que habla cuando nadie quiere hablar, la que se puso de pie con coraje para ayudar a lxs beneficiarxs de la reforma agraria a ser dueñxs de sus tierras».
Atacantes desconocidos la ultimaron a balazos en frente de la Universidad Estatal Sultán Kudarat (SKSU), mientras se dirigía a la Escuela Secundaria Nacional Salabaca, en Esperanza.
Su familia ha dicho: «Naghihintay pa rin kami ng hustisya para sa kanya» (todavía estamos esperando justicia para ella).

A Cross-Movement Dialogue
What if we reimagined ways of caring for our communities?
What if the economy was not about someone else’s profit but about care for our individual and collective wellbeing? These stories are about building communities of care with and for people who are historically and presently excluded, disenfranchised and dehumanized by both state and society. These are the stories of feminists centering care in the economy.

Qu’est-ce que le processus des Nations Unies sur le financement du développement ?
Le processus de l’Organisation des Nations Unies (ONU) sur le financement du développement (FdD) vise à traiter différentes formes de financement du développement et de coopération pour le développement. Selon le Consensus de Monterrey, ce processus comporte six axes clés :
- La mobilisation des ressources financières nationales au service du développement.
- La mobilisation des ressources internationales au service du développement : investissements étrangers directs et autres flux financiers privés.
- Le commerce international, comme moteur du développement.
- L’accroissement de la coopération financière et technique internationale pour le développement.
- La dette extérieure.
- L’examen des questions systémiques : amélioration de la cohérence et de la constance des systèmes monétaires, financiers et commerciaux internationaux en faveur du développement.
Riham Al-Bader
Riham était avocate et activiste engagée à suivre de près la question des violations des droits au Yémen.
Elle a travaillé avec d'autres activistes pour fournir de la nourriture et de l'eau aux civils piégés par les milices houthies dans la banlieue de la ville de Taiz.
Riham a été tuée en février 2018. La cause de son décès, soit par la main d’un tireur d'élite ou par un tir de mortier, n’a pas été confirmée. Personne n'a été tenu responsable de son meurtre.

Ocupação 9 de Julho
Cuando lleguen al centro de São Paulo, verán el edificio de la Ocupação 9 de Julho, un sitio prominente en la lucha por la vivienda social y un importante espacio cultural. Este es el trabajo del Movimiento de Trabajadores Sin Hogar (Movimento dos Sem-Teto do Centro, MSTC), un movimiento de más de 2000 personas que actúa en el centro de la ciudad y convierte espacios abandonados en viviendas para trabajadorxs de bajos ingresos, niñxs, mujeres, adultos, ancianxs, migrantes y refugiadxs. En este edificio en particular, brindan comida y albergue a 122 familias.
