Memory as Resistance: A Tribute to WHRDs no longer with us
AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us.
In 2020, we are taking a turn
This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.
49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.
This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.
The stories of activists we honour keep their legacy alive and carry their inspiration forward into our movements’ future work.
The portraits of the 2020 edition are designed by award winning illustrator and animator, Louisa Bertman.
AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these activists and WHRDs and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

The Tribute was first launched in 2012
It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.
To date, 467 feminists and WHRDs are featured.

Biography
With over 30 years of finance experience, Christine has devoted her career to furthering nonprofit missions on a global scale. Her contributions extend to serving as Treasurer on the Board of an NGO. Christine joined AWID in 2007 as Controller and in 2023 took on the role as Director of Finance. During her spare time she enjoys traveling, gardening and hiking.

Pendant des décennies, les universitaires et défenseur·euse·s féministes ont développé d’importantes notions liées au genre afin de comprendre et combattre l’oppression et la discrimination. Ces notions sont maintenant devenues la cible d’acteur·ice·s antidroits qui prétendent que les rôles de genre patriarcaux oppressifs relèvent du « bon sens », peignant stratégiquement toutes les autres idées, normes culturelles et formes de vie sociale comme une idéologie dangereuse et conspirationniste.

Deya Bhattacharya
Biography
Deya es une organizadore de movimientos feministas, profesional de los derechos humanos e investigadore queer trans no binarie que basa su trabajo en métodos queer-feministas y participativos. Ha trabajado en el ecosistema del financiamiento feminista durante más de siete años y ha participado en espacios del movimiento feminista desde hace mucho más tiempo, ya más de 10 años. Su trabajo se ubica en la intersección del dinero con los movimientos. Antes de incorporarse a AWID, Deya se desempeñaba como consultore independiente para Mama Cash, Kaleidoscope Trust, Comic Relief, Global Fund for Children (Fondo Global para la Infancia), entre otros, donde estableció en conjunto procesos, espacios y mecanismos centrados en los movimientos para la dotación de recursos, programas e investigación. Posee una maestría en Justicia Internacional y Derechos Humanos de la Universidad Centroeuropea.
En AWID, Deya conduce la Estrategia de Participación y Apoyo a los Movimientos de la Iniciativa Financiamiento para los Movimientos Feministas, y brinda apoyo a movimientos feministas clave en sus esfuerzos de definir y promover agendas de dotación de recursos feministas. Fuera del trabajo, Deya se destaca en natación, adora la ficción literaria contemporánea y cuidar su perro.

Ocupação 9 de Julho
Cuando lleguen al centro de São Paulo, verán el edificio de la Ocupação 9 de Julho, un sitio prominente en la lucha por la vivienda social y un importante espacio cultural. Este es el trabajo del Movimiento de Trabajadores Sin Hogar (Movimento dos Sem-Teto do Centro, MSTC), un movimiento de más de 2000 personas que actúa en el centro de la ciudad y convierte espacios abandonados en viviendas para trabajadorxs de bajos ingresos, niñxs, mujeres, adultos, ancianxs, migrantes y refugiadxs. En este edificio en particular, brindan comida y albergue a 122 familias.

Shireen fue una inspiración para muchas feministas en Fiyi y una aliada poderosa del movimiento de mujeres.
Abogó incansablemente por la igualdad de género tanto a nivel local como regional. Comenzó su carrera como especialista junior en género en el Banco de Desarrollo Asiático e introdujo profundos cambios en las políticas de género de la institución. Su investigación «Gobernar mediante lxs danda: violencia doméstica entre lxs indo-fiyianxs» fue uno de los primeros trabajos de investigación sobre violencia doméstica, matrimonio y mujeres en Fiyi. Este trabajo fundacional ha sido un catalizador para el trabajo feminista en esta área.
El legado de Shireen sigue vivo porque son muchxs lxs que recuerdan su influencia, su compromiso y su apoyo al movimiento de mujeres de Fiyi y del Pacífico.

The WITM survey is focused on the feminist resourcing realities of the last 3 years (2021 to 2023), and has five key sections:

- Key aspirations
