Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Lara was a well-known and loved radio DJ on Motsweding FM in South Africa.
Lara was one of the first openly-transgender radio hosts on a mainstream station. She worked hard to shine a light on LGBTI issues.
Lara’s activism started at a young age when she would vocally defend her right to dress and behave as she felt comfortable to members of her community who didn’t yet understand what it meant to be transgender.

AWID IN 2015: Building Collective Impact
In 2015 AWID grew and diversified.
We ramped up preparations for the 13th AWID international Forum, focused a lot of energy on the Post 2015 Development Agenda and Financing for Development processes, and continued the core work of our priority areas:
- Challenging Religious Fundamentalisms
- Women Human Rights Defenders
- Economic Justice
- Resourcing Women’s Rights
- Young Feminist Activism
A sneak peak inside the report
The context
- We continue witnessing the rapid breakdown in democracy and democratic institutions, with spaces for dissent shrinking.
- Multiple and concurrent systemic crises (energy, food, finance and climate) continue to deepen inequalities and pose major challenges.
- Corporations are a leading power in determining the development agenda.
- Violence against WHRDs remains an urgent problem.
- Religious fundamentalisms are pervasive and increasingly powerful.
- New forms of online gender-based violence have emerged.
In response, we are moving out of our silos.
Increasingly, women’s rights and other movements worldwide are articulating the systemic and intersectional nature of these and other problems. We are making better connections with the agendas of other social and environmental movements for solidarity, alliance building and collective responses. We are also seeing greater visibility of these movements fighting for justice on the ground.

De niña, demostraba fuerte interés en el arte, la comunicación, la naturaleza, la literatura y el logro de la justicia, especialmente para las mujeres y los grupos marginados.
Estaba comprometida con los derechos sexuales y reproductivos y fue parte de la Junta Nacional para la Educación Integral en Sexualidad. Sus seres queridxs la recuerdan como «una luchadora apasionada e incansable» con un profundo compromiso con los derechos de las mujeres y lxs niñxs.

Co-Creating a Political Home for Feminist Movements
From 27 - 30 April, 2026, AWID will be at the Women Deliver 2026 Conference, co-creating a political home with feminist and gender justice movements that is rooted in transnational care and solidarity.
In a time when fascism and militarization continue to rise globally, feminist connection and solidarity across borders is what we truly need. We are organizing multiple spaces at Women Deliver and online to connect movements with each other in conversations to build feminist agendas of solidarity and action.
Peni Moore
Philosophe féministe radicale, Peni était aussi poète, écrivaine, dramaturge et compositrice.
Première coordinatrice du Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (Mouvement pour les droits des femmes aux Fidji), elle a laissé un héritage empreint de sa profonde préoccupation pour les droits fondamentaux des femmes, la justice et la paix. L’engagement de Peni en faveur de la justice sociale, économique et écologique et son travail remarquable lui a valu le respect de la communauté locale et internationale. Au sein des mouvements féministes traditionnels des Fidji, elle a été l’une des premières à travailler avec et aux côtés des personnes LGBTQI et a fourni une assistance concrète au mouvement des travailleurs et des travailleuses du sexe lorsqu’il s’est constitué aux Fidji.
Ses collègues l'ont décrite comme une personne formidable et une leader visionnaire du changement. Elle a inspiré beaucoup de personnes par sa créativité et son courage. Son travail a permis à de nombreuses personnes de se faire entendre, d’acquérir de nouvelles compétences et d’ouvrir de nouvelles voies, tant au niveau personnel que communautaire.

Les endroits inconnus m’excitent,
la façon dont les membres et les veines et les os
résistent à la pourriture,
leur sort incertain.
Arrivée à la porte, je réfléchis à deux fois.
Le couloir est tout noir
et ça me fait faire une pause.
De l’autre côté,
un portail d’odeurs et de couleurs
s’ouvre comme une malédiction,
dans un après-midi ensoleillé.
La brise
fait danser mes cheveux,
pique leur curiosité,
les obligent à se déplacer.
J’entends le fauteuil roulant vrombir,
façonnant les ombres.
Puis je les vois :
un visage de lynx
et un corps comme le mien
et je me retrouve à désirer les deux
de nouveau.
La créature me fait signe d’approcher.
Ses gestes écrivent une phrase;
tandis que je m’avance,
je note ses détails :
flétrir, chair, bonheur
À sa commande, la vigne recouvre le couloir
étreignant des pierres chaudes,
serpentant le long du mur.
Cela devient un verbe,
« escalader »,
et je suis réorientée quand leurs griffes pointent
vers le lit de vigne au centre.
J’entends les roues derrière moi,
puis ce son.
Il résonne
comme aucun autre.
Ses longues ailes noires
montent vers le plafond
puis iel se précipite vers l’avant.
La vision féline scrute chaque détail,
chaque changement,
chaque désir.
Le désir peut-il liquéfier vos muscles?
Peut-il agir plus doux que le
plus puissant des tranquillisants?
Un lynx coud le monde
à travers nos différences,
tissant de la dentelle autour de mes genoux.
Le désir peut-il écraser la distance du monde, comprimant les secondes?
Iel se rapproche encore,
oeil de lynx rencontrant oeil humain,
reniflant l’air,
transformant le corps en
urgence.
Iel a battu des ailes.
Remuées,
les vignes s’emmêlent autour de ma taille/de mes pertes.
Sa langue amincit le temps,
terrains mouvants,
apaise, avec sa magie,
ce qui remue dessous.
Je vois le monde en toi,
et le monde est épuisé.
Puis iel plaide :
Laisse-moi me régaler de toi.
