Young Feminist Activism

Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat

Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.

At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.

A multigenerational approach

AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.

Our Actions

We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

  • Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

  • Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

  • Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

  • Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

  • Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Jaitun, souvent appelée « Amma », œuvrait à la protection des droits reproductifs des femmes et des filles en Inde. Son travail s’est  particulièrement centré sur la défense des personnes pauvres et marginalisées, dont les filles et femmes dalits et musulmanes.

Jaitun était la force vitale derrière l’affaire Jaitun contre Janpura Maternity Home & Ors. Sa persévérance à obtenir justice a permis d’aboutir à un jugement sans précédent rendu par la Cour Suprême de Delhi. Le gouvernement indien a ainsi été tenu responsable de n’avoir pas rempli plusieurs de ses obligations juridiques, telles que les soins de santé reproductive et le droit à l’alimentation.

Sa fille Fatema, qui vivait sous le seuil de pauvreté, s’était vu refuser l’accès à des services de santé reproductive et avait dû accoucher en public, sous un arbre. Jaitun et Fatema étaient à cette époque sans domicile, car le gouvernement avait démoli leur maison dans le cadre d’un projet de réaménagement et de gentrification à New Delhi.

« Depuis, le jugement a fait jurisprudence pour de nombreux·euses avocat·e·s et activistes du monde entier, et notamment l’ancien Rapporteur spécial des Nations Unies sur le droit à la santé, non seulement comme source d’inspiration, mais comme solide tremplin pour obtenir la justice. » - Jameen Kaur

Jaitun a inspiré de très nombreuses autres femmes vivant dans la pauvreté à réclamer leurs droits. Elle s’est éteinte en 2017.

Son courage féroce, son humour inimitable - nous la comparions à l’actrice de Bollywood Hema Malini -, ses colères lorsque l’on passait trop de temps sans venir la voir : elle nous disait, une étincelle dans le regard, « Tu as oublié Amma, Amma ne te parle plus », puis faisait volte-face de manière mélodramatique, pour se retourner en riant et tendre les bras pour une embrassade. Sa gentillesse, et en fin de compte son amour, sa joie d’aimer et sa volonté que chacun·e ait le droit de vivre dignement en faisaient un être à part . Elle me manque terriblement. » - Jameen Kaur

Rosa Candida Mayorga Muñoz was a Guatemalan social worker, union leader and labor rights defender. She was affectionately called Rosita and she inspired change. 

In the 1980’s, Rosa became the first female member of the Executive Committee of the Union of Workers of the Institute of National Electrification (STINDE), a union she first joined to advocate for women’s labor rights. For her, this meant fighting for equal opportunities in a company where many women faced a discriminatory and violent system created by company authorities. Rosa had also suffered sexual harassment in her workplace, both by co-workers and managers. She was not to be kept quiet though. 

Rosa continued fighting and was part of the effort to mould the struggle into a more specific form, that of the INDE-STINDE Collective Pact of Working conditions. This pact was a pioneer, the first in Guatemala to typify the concept of (sexual) harassment. It serves as a reference for the Guatemalan legislation on labor matters and is an encouragement for other unions.

“She had no fighting tools other than her own ideals... Many times she was intimidated, harassed to put the fight aside, but her courage generated the image of hope for grassroots unionists. Rosita created an image of respect, not only within her union, but before the authorities of the institution, before the women's movement; she was recognized as a pioneer of the trade union women's movement, in a space that had been more dominated by men.” - Maritza Velasquez, ATRAHDOM

Rosa passed away on 4 April 2018 at the age of 77.

Corporalidades Transnacionales

Desde siempre el feminismo sostiene que lo personal es político. El Festival Crear, Resister, Transform generó espacios en los que el feminismo pudo discutir las cuestiones relativas al cuerpo, el género y las sexualidades, y analizar las interconexiones de estos asuntos entendidos como experiencias profundas del cuerpo y, a la vez, un terreno en los que los derechos están en constante disputa y riesgo en la sociedad.

El poder de los movimientos feministas radica en el modo de organizarnos y emprender acciones coordinadas, no solo en nuestras propias comunidades y movimientos, sino también con otras causas y grupos aliados por la justicia social. El espacio brindó la oportunidad de que los movimientos compartieran y reforzaran los procesos de organización y las estrategias tácticas de forma mutua.

La pandemia mundial sanitaria del COVID-19 ha puesto de manifiesto como nunca antes el fracaso del capitalismo neoliberal, expuesto las fallas de nuestros sistemas y acentuado la necesidad de construir nuevas realidades y las oportunidades para ello. Una recuperación económica y social feminista exige el trabajo conjunto. Esta edición, en alianza con Kohl: una publicación para la investigación sobre cuerpo y género, analizará soluciones, propuestas y realidades feministas para transformar nuestro mundo actual, nuestros cuerpos y nuestras sexualidades.

Asesinato

Mirna Teresa Suazo Martínez era parte de la comunidad garífuna (afrodescendiente e indígena) de Masca, en la costa norte del Caribe de  Honduras. Era una líder comunitaria, y una ferviente defensora del territorio indígena, tierra que fue vulnerada cuando el Instituto Nacional Agrario de Honduras otorgó licencias territoriales a gente ajena a la comunidad.

Este acto deplorable derivó en repetidos acosos, abusos y violencia contra la comunidad de Masca, dado que los intereses económicos de diferentes grupos se unieron a los de las fuerzas armadas y las autoridades hondureñas. Según la Organización Fraternal Negra Hondureña (OFRANEH), la estrategia de estos grupos es expulsar y exterminar a la población indígena.

«Masca, la comunidad Garífuna localizada junto al valle del Cuyamel, forma parte de la zona de influencia de una de las supuestas ciudades modelo, situación que ha disparado las presiones territoriales a lo largo de la costa Garífuna.» - OFRANEH, 8 de septiembre de 2019

Mirna Teresa, presidenta del Patronato de la comunidad de Masca en Omoa, también rechazaba con firmeza la construcción de dos plantas hidroeléctricas sobre el río que lleva el mismo nombre que su comunidad, Masca.

«La comunidad garífuna atribuye el agravamiento de la situación en su región a su oposición  contra la explotación turística, el monocultivo de palma africana y  el narcotráfico, al mismo tiempo que busca construir una vida alternativa a través del cultivo del coco y de otros productos de autoconsumo.» - Voces Feministas, 10 de septiembre de 2019

Mirna Teresa fue asesinada el 8 de septiembre de 2019 en su restaurante «Champa los Gemelos».

Fue una de las seis defensoras garífunas asesinadas solo entre septiembre y octubre de 2019. Según OFRANEH, las autoridades no han investigado estos crímenes.

«En el caso de las comunidades Garífunas, buena parte de los homicidios están relacionados con la tenencia y el manejo de la tierra. No obstante, las rencillas entre el crimen organizado han tenido como resultado asesinatos, como los recientemente ocurridos en Santa Rosa de Aguán.» - OFRANEH, 8 de septiembre de 2019

For 40 years, AWID has been a part of an incredible ecosystem of feminist movements working to achieve gender justice and women’s human rights worldwide.

Our mission is to support feminist, women’s rights and gender justice movements to thrive, to be a driving force in challenging systems of oppression, and to co-create feminist realities.

Our tactics

We advance our work through these tactics:

Influencing, advocacy and campaigning

We collaboratively leverage our access, power, resources and relationships to strategically influence policy and practice. We aim to advance feminist agendas through our work with policy makers, funders and activists in regional and global spaces. We also work to influence feminist and women’s rights movements to centre historically oppressed movements as part of efforts to strengthen our collective power and influence.

Convening and connecting

We use our convening power to facilitate dialogue and strategize on key issues. We connect our members and allies with one another, sharing and exchanging resources, ideas and action across relevant issues. We organize and facilitate spaces to strengthen and engage across movements, to imagine and envisage new futures, to develop effective influencing tactics and to co-create powerful agendas and processes.  

Solidarity and bridge-building

We work to mobilize our members and the movements we support to strengthen collective action in solidarity with feminist causes and defenders at risk. We build partnerships, engage in active listening and ongoing, long-term, solidarity. We work with defenders to build a body of knowledge and support networks of solidarity on protection and wellbeing.

Arts and creative expression

We recognize the unique and strategic value of cultural and creative strategies in the struggle against oppression and injustice. We work with artists who centre feminist voices and the narratives of historically oppressed communities. In this emerging tactic, we see art and creative expression helping us envision a world where feminist realities continue to flourish and be celebrated.

Our initiatives work at the intersections of the sites of change we work to address, the movements we prioritize, and the tactics we use​:

Advancing Universal Rights and Justice

We monitor, document and make visible how anti-rights actors are operating and colluding in multilateral spaces and support feminist, women’s rights and gender justice movements and allies to counter their influence and impact.

Building Feminist Economies

Working on extractivism, tax justice and corporate accountability, we build knowledge on corporate power and influence; advocate for corporate accountability and equitable distribution of wealth; and amplify feminist proposals for just economies. 

Resourcing Feminist Movements

We develop accessible, action-oriented analysis on the state of resourcing for feminist movements. We aim to influence funders’ policies and practices, deepen and sustain funding for feminist social change, and support movements’ needs and strategies. 

In addition to the impact we aim to have in the world, AWID is expressly committed to strengthening our own organizational learning and resilience in order to further strengthen global feminist movements.

Apreciaremos propuestas de actividades referidas a todo el rango de áreas temáticas e intersecciones que son importantes para los movimientos feministas y por la justicia de género. En el formulario de propuesta podrás marcar más de un tema que se adecúe a tu actividad.

  • Cuerpos libres, espíritus libres: todo lo que que se relacione con la autonomía corporal, el género y la sexualidad, la salud y los derechos reproductivos, la libertad de vivir sin violencia de género, la libertad de vivir segurxs, el placer y la alegría en nuestros cuerpos diversos, identidades y comunidades, y mucho, mucho más.
  • Resistir frente a los antiderechos: tanto a nivel local como global, lxs feministas están liderando la resistencia frente a todas las formas de opresiones interseccionales, incluidos los fascismos, los fundamentalismos y los regímenes autoritarios; tenemos mucho para compartir y mucho sobre lo cual elaborar estrategias conjuntas.
  • Movimientos y organización: conozcamos nuestros respectivos movimientos. Desde el tránsito por los espacios de poder (internos y externos) hasta las estrategias de protección frente a la represión de las mujeres y las personas de género no normativo defensoras de los derechos humanos, desde el armado de alianzas hasta las formas creativas y exitosas de organización: aprendamos e inspirémonos recíprocamente.
  • Justicia económica y economías feministas: este tema abarca todos los esfuerzos feministas para transformar nuestras economías, desde el desafío de los modelos extractivistas dominantes y la defensa de los derechos laborales, hasta corporizar y vivir prácticas y alternativas económicas feministas en la vida cotidiana.
  • Financiar y dotar de recursos al activismo: obtener el financiamiento imprescindible constituye un desafío compartido para los movimientos de todo el mundo; estudiemos juntxs el ecosistema de financiamiento feminista, desde el análisis crítico hasta las experiencias de primera mano y las formas prácticas de financiar el trabajo feminista.
  • Clima, justicia ambiental, tierra y agua: la justicia ecológica y climática tiene profundas raíces en muchos de nuestros movimientos y comunidades; desde las tradiciones ancestrales hasta las visiones futuristas, desde los poblados ecológicos hasta las campañas para poner fin al extractivismo y acceder a la justicia, invitamos a abarcar un amplio rango de actividades sobre todos los aspectos de la justicia climática y ambiental.
  • Militarización, guerra y conflicto armado: nuestro objetivo es poner de relieve la organización, el análisis y las experiencias feministas que a menudo se encuentran en las primeras filas de la respuesta a las crisis, ayudando a sostener la vida, la comunidad y la justicia en los momentos más duros de guerra y conflicto prolongado.
  • Descolonización: la descolonización es central en todos y cada uno de nuestros temas y, sin embargo, también constituye, en sí misma, una agenda feminista clave de resistencia y construcción de mundo en muchas realidades coloniales y postcoloniales.
  • Realidades digitales y tecnología feminista: nos entusiasma esta oportunidad de celebrar las increíbles iniciativas feministas que transforman los mundos digitales, desafían las estructuras de poder de los gigantes tecnológicos y democratizan la tecnología, convirtiéndola en algo verdaderamente por y para la gente.
  • Justicia de sanación: existe una increíble diversidad de abordajes sobre el cuidado colectivo y la justicia de sanación. En todo el mundo, sanadorxs y movimientos están reivindicando la justicia de sanación como principio político, como conjunto de prácticas, como viaje de aprendizaje, como forma de vida y mucho más.

In 2015 AWID grew and diversified.

We ramped up preparations for the 13th AWID international Forum, focused a lot of energy on the Post 2015 Development Agenda and Financing for Development processes, and continued the core work of our priority areas:

A sneak peak inside the report

The context

  • We continue witnessing the rapid breakdown in democracy and democratic institutions, with spaces for dissent shrinking.
  • Multiple and concurrent systemic crises (energy, food, finance and climate) continue to deepen inequalities and pose major challenges.
  • Corporations are a leading power in determining the development agenda.
  • Violence against WHRDs remains an urgent problem.
  • Religious fundamentalisms are pervasive and increasingly powerful.
  • New forms of online gender-based violence have emerged.

In response, we are moving out of our silos.

Increasingly, women’s rights and other movements worldwide are articulating the systemic and intersectional nature of these and other problems. We are making better connections with the agendas of other social and environmental movements for solidarity, alliance building and collective responses. We are also seeing greater visibility of these movements fighting for justice on the ground.

Barbara Allimadi

Barbara Allimadi était une militante politique et des droits humains originaire d’Ouganda. En 2012, elle a coorganisé une manifestation contre l’agression policière télévisée d’Ingrid Turinawe, opposante politique dont le sein a été pressé par un officier de police. Durant la manifestation, Barbara et d’autres activistes se sont déshabillées et n’ont gardé que leur soutien-gorge devant le poste central de police de Kampala. Cet épisode fut par la suite  désigné par la tristement célèbre « manifestation en soutien-gorge » en Ouganda. 

« Nous avons opté pour une manifestation en soutien-gorge. Nous avons pensé qu’elle serait la plus appropriée par rapport aux faits. Ce n’est pas comme si nous étions en train de dire que nous ne nous respections pas. Nous étions dégoûtées par les actes commis. »  - Barbara Allimadi, 2013 (Daily Monitor)

Diplômée en électronique et en ingénierie des communications de l’Université métropolitaine de Londres, Barbara était ingénieure réseau au Royaume-Uni et une fervente amatrice de musique reggae. Elle retourna en Ouganda en 2007, au moment du décès de sa mère. 

En 2019, elle fut désignée Coordonnatrice pour les affaires internationales et la diaspora de l’Alliance for National Transformation (alliance pour la transformation nationale, ANT), un parti politique lancé la même année par un leader d’opposition.

Barbara est décédée le 27 avril 2020.
