Protection of the Family
The Issue
Over the past few years, a troubling new trend at the international human rights level is being observed, where discourses on ‘protecting the family’ are being employed to defend violations committed against family members, to bolster and justify impunity, and to restrict equal rights within and to family life.
The campaign to "Protect the Family" is driven by ultra-conservative efforts to impose "traditional" and patriarchal interpretations of the family, and to move rights out of the hands of family members and into the institution of ‘the family’.
“Protection of the Family” efforts stem from:
- rising traditionalism,
- rising cultural, social and religious conservatism and
- sentiment hostile to women’s human rights, sexual rights, child rights and the rights of persons with non-normative gender identities and sexual orientations.
Since 2014, a group of states have been operating as a bloc in human rights spaces under the name “Group of Friends of the Family”, and resolutions on “Protection of the Family” have been successfully passed every year since 2014.
This agenda has spread beyond the Human Rights Council. We have seen regressive language on “the family” being introduced at the Commission on the Status of Women, and attempts made to introduce it in negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our Approach
AWID works with partners and allies to jointly resist “Protection of the Family” and other regressive agendas, and to uphold the universality of human rights.
In response to the increased influence of regressive actors in human rights spaces, AWID joined allies to form the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). OURs is a collaborative project that monitors, analyzes, and shares information on anti-rights initiatives like “Protection of the Family”.
Rights at Risk, the first OURs report, charts a map of the actors making up the global anti-rights lobby, identifies their key discourses and strategies, and the effect they are having on our human rights.
The report outlines “Protection of the Family” as an agenda that has fostered collaboration across a broad range of regressive actors at the UN. It describes it as: “a strategic framework that houses “multiple patriarchal and anti-rights positions, where the framework, in turn, aims to justify and institutionalize these positions.”

Un an seulement après sa fondation, les membres de Nadia Echazú ont commencé à travailler dans la haute couture et ont organisé un défilé de mode dans l'historique hôtel Bauen.
Elles ont montré cinq modèles et quelques travailleuses de la coopérative textile ont même défilé avec leurs propres créations.
C'était révolutionnaire non seulement parce qu'elles concevaient des alternatives à la mode grand public, mais aussi parce qu'elles créaient des vêtements accessibles et inclusifs pour les corps trans et travesti.
Il n'y a pas d'économies féministes sans vêtements qui nous font nous sentir incroyables et confortables!
Por que devo considerar responder ao inquérito?
Existem várias razões pelas quais a sua resposta ao inquérito WITM é importante. Por exemplo, tem a oportunidade de partilhar a sua experiência vivida com a mobilização de financiamento para apoiar a sua organização; de reivindicar o seu poder como especialista sobre como o dinheiro circula e os bolsos em que entra; e de contribuir para a defesa coletiva e consistente junto de financiadores para mover mais recursos de maior qualidade. Ao longo das últimas duas décadas, o inquérito WITM da AWID tem-se revelado um recurso fundamental para ativistas e financiadores. Convidamo-lo a juntar-se a nós na sua terceira edição para destacar o estado efetivo do financiamento, desafiar soluções falsas e apontar a forma como o financiamento precisa de mudar para que os movimentos prosperem e enfrentem os desafios complexos do nosso tempo.

Crear conjuntamente espacios amigables y seguros
La creación conjunta de nuestras realidades feministas comienza con nosotrxs mismxs y con cómo nos tratamos mutuamente. Nos esforzamos por crear y proteger espacios seguros para nuestras comunidades, tanto en línea como en forma presencial.
También creemos que los espacios seguros y amigables son de propiedad y creación conjuntas. Esperamos que nuestrxs integrantes actúen de manera ética, responsable y consistente con los valores de AWID, y asuman la responsabilidad colectiva de garantizar una atmósfera de respeto y solidaridad recíprocos.
Se alienta a toda la membresía de AWID a:

Conéctate con otrxs, ayuda a romper el aislamiento y a promover la solidaridad. Es muy fácil sentirse perdidx y solx, y ser tratadx en forma amable y receptiva resulta de suma ayuda.

Interactúa y conéctate de forma pacífica. Surgirán diferencias de opinión, naturalmente: por favor, considera que estas diferencias son útiles para expandir tu pensamiento y tu modo de ver el mundo.

Ayuda a construir un espacio que reconozca y valide las múltiples experiencias de vida y las diversidades corporales y de expresiones de género. Reconoce que todxs tenemos identidades interseccionales.

Utiliza lenguaje inclusivo. Respeta la forma en que las personas quieren ser nombradas en términos de identidad o expresión de género (como los pronombres), y practica el uso del lenguaje inclusivo.

Escucha y modifica tu comportamiento y tu forma de interactuar si alguien dice que se siente incómodx. No preguntes a otras personas cosas que no te gustaría que te pregunten a ti.

Ayuda a combatir comportamientos opresivos, como, por ejemplo, acoso, violencia verbal o física, violación de consentimiento, y cualquier acción que perpetúe el clasismo, la discriminación por edad y/o capacidad, el racismo, la misoginia, el heterosexismo, la transfobia y otras opresiones. Si fuera necesario, por favor, contacta al personal de AWID.

Habla y escucha con la mente y el corazón abiertos, y sin juzgar.

Sé honestx, abierto y sincerx. Comparte y habla en forma auténtica sobre tus esperanzas y tus sueños, y tus ideas para tu propia vida y tu comunidad.

Practica la escucha activa y la autoconsciencia. Préstale atención a cuánto tiempo y espacio estás ocupando: deja lugar para lxs demás, practica la escucha activa y la enseñanza orientada a la acción.

Sé consideradx y reconoce a lxs otrxs por su trabajo y activismo. Recuerda que todxs estamos trabajando colectivamente para contribuir al cambio. Asegúrate de reconocer las contribuciones de otras personas y de dar crédito a su trabajo cuando sea apropiado, por ejemplo, en conversaciones, artículos, imágenes, etc.

Deborah Holmes
At the time of her death, following a short but aggressive battle with cancer, Deborah was the Chief Communication and Engagement Officer at the Women’s Funding Network (WFN).
Deborah also worked for the Global Fund for Women from 2008 to 2017. Deborah was extremely loved and respected by board, staff, and partners of Global Fund for Women.
Kavita Ramdas, former CEO of the Global Fund for Women aptly noted that Deborah was “a small package exploding with warmth, generosity, intelligence, style, and a passionate commitment to fusing beauty with justice. She understood the power of story. The power of women’s voice. The power of lived experience. The power of rising from the ashes and telling others it was possible. And, still we rise.”
Musimbi Kanyoro, the present CEO of the Global Fund for Women, added, “We have lost a sister and her life illuminates values that unite and inspire us all. As we all come together to mourn Deborah’s passing, let us remember and celebrate her remarkable, bold, and passionate life.”

Leitis in Waiting Watch Party Participation Guide
Carmen Griffiths
Carmen encabezaba el Construction Resource and Development Collective (CRDC, Colectivo de recursos para la construcción y el desarrollo) y fue fundamental para apoyar la participación de las mujeres en la industria de la construcción en Jamaica.
También trabajó con mujeres rurales y urbanas en temas relacionados a la preparación para afrontar desastres naturales. Trabajó de manera cercana con mujeres (especialmente madres solteras) enseñándoles cómo usar los cinturones para huracanes y otras tecnologías para poner sus hogares a resguardo. Trabajó en el área de agua y obras sanitarias y fue una fuerte defensora del manejo y desarrollo ambientalmente sustentable.
Fue parte de la Comisión Huairou y realizó incidencia en favor de las mujeres de base en temas vinculados a refugio, energía y medios de vida sustentables.

Ika Vantiani
Bunga or flower in English is something that is often associated with women in Indonesia. Meaning, a flower can also be associated with transgender women. Because transgender women are women. As beautiful, as strong, and they both lived not only waiting to be 'picked' but instead grew and bloom and died as they pleased. This work is a tribute to my transgender women friends on The International Transgender Day of Visibility.
About Ika Vantiani
Ika Vantiani is an Indonesian artist, curator and crafter based in Jakarta. Her works explores the idea of being a woman in today’s society with the intertwined between media and consumption. Ika uses the discipline of collage and expands it into workshop, installation, and street art. Ika is the member of artist collectives including Micro Galleries, The Collage Club and It’s In Your Hands Collective.
Kate McInturff
Active dans l’organisation Peacebuild, en passant par l'Alliance canadienne féministe pour l'action internationale, Amnesty International et au Centre canadien de politiques alternatives (CCPA), Kate était une passionnée des droits des femmes et de l'égalité de genre qui a consacré sa carrière à lutter contre les inégalités et à faire du monde un lieu plus empathique.
Kate a été membre du comité de coordination de Social Watch et a contribué aux rapports nationaux canadiens de Social Watch. En tant que chercheuse principale du CCPA, Kate a été saluée dans son pays pour ses travaux de recherche, ses écrits et la production du rapport annuel intitulé « Les meilleures et les pires endroits du Canada où vivre en tant que femme ».
Entourée de sa famille, Kate est décédée paisiblement après trois ans de lutte contre le cancer du côlon. Ses proches la décrivent comme une « féministe drôle, sans peur et sans complexes ».
