Protection of the Family
The Issue
Over the past few years, a troubling new trend at the international human rights level is being observed, where discourses on ‘protecting the family’ are being employed to defend violations committed against family members, to bolster and justify impunity, and to restrict equal rights within and to family life.
The campaign to "Protect the Family" is driven by ultra-conservative efforts to impose "traditional" and patriarchal interpretations of the family, and to move rights out of the hands of family members and into the institution of ‘the family’.
“Protection of the Family” efforts stem from:
- rising traditionalism,
- rising cultural, social and religious conservatism and
- sentiment hostile to women’s human rights, sexual rights, child rights and the rights of persons with non-normative gender identities and sexual orientations.
Since 2014, a group of states have been operating as a bloc in human rights spaces under the name “Group of Friends of the Family”, and resolutions on “Protection of the Family” have been successfully passed every year since 2014.
This agenda has spread beyond the Human Rights Council. We have seen regressive language on “the family” being introduced at the Commission on the Status of Women, and attempts made to introduce it in negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our Approach
AWID works with partners and allies to jointly resist “Protection of the Family” and other regressive agendas, and to uphold the universality of human rights.
In response to the increased influence of regressive actors in human rights spaces, AWID joined allies to form the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). OURs is a collaborative project that monitors, analyzes, and shares information on anti-rights initiatives like “Protection of the Family”.
Rights at Risk, the first OURs report, charts a map of the actors making up the global anti-rights lobby, identifies their key discourses and strategies, and the effect they are having on our human rights.
The report outlines “Protection of the Family” as an agenda that has fostered collaboration across a broad range of regressive actors at the UN. It describes it as: “a strategic framework that houses “multiple patriarchal and anti-rights positions, where the framework, in turn, aims to justify and institutionalize these positions.”

Mariam Uy Acob
Mariam was a paralegal at the Kawagib Moro Human Rights Alliance.
Mariam was a staunch critic of militarization in Moro communities, and consistently denounced aerial bombardment and encampment. She had to seek sanctuary after exposing and calling out the injustices committed against Muslim communities in the Philippines.
She is believed to have been killed by suspected military agents because of her work as a WHRD. The assailants who killed Mariam waited for her, caught up with the vehicle she was using and shot her seven times.

Conéctate con otrxs, ayuda a romper el aislamiento y a promover la solidaridad. Es muy fácil sentirse perdidx y solx, y ser tratadx en forma amable y receptiva resulta de suma ayuda.

Interactúa y conéctate de forma pacífica. Surgirán diferencias de opinión, naturalmente: por favor, considera que estas diferencias son útiles para expandir tu pensamiento y tu modo de ver el mundo.

Ayuda a construir un espacio que reconozca y valide las múltiples experiencias de vida y las diversidades corporales y de expresiones de género. Reconoce que todxs tenemos identidades interseccionales.

Utiliza lenguaje inclusivo. Respeta la forma en que las personas quieren ser nombradas en términos de identidad o expresión de género (como los pronombres), y practica el uso del lenguaje inclusivo.

Escucha y modifica tu comportamiento y tu forma de interactuar si alguien dice que se siente incómodx. No preguntes a otras personas cosas que no te gustaría que te pregunten a ti.

Ayuda a combatir comportamientos opresivos, como, por ejemplo, acoso, violencia verbal o física, violación de consentimiento, y cualquier acción que perpetúe el clasismo, la discriminación por edad y/o capacidad, el racismo, la misoginia, el heterosexismo, la transfobia y otras opresiones. Si fuera necesario, por favor, contacta al personal de AWID.

Habla y escucha con la mente y el corazón abiertos, y sin juzgar.

Sé honestx, abierto y sincerx. Comparte y habla en forma auténtica sobre tus esperanzas y tus sueños, y tus ideas para tu propia vida y tu comunidad.

Sé consideradx y reconoce a lxs otrxs por su trabajo y activismo. Recuerda que todxs estamos trabajando colectivamente para contribuir al cambio. Asegúrate de reconocer las contribuciones de otras personas y de dar crédito a su trabajo cuando sea apropiado, por ejemplo, en conversaciones, artículos, imágenes, etc.

Florence Adong-Ewoo
Florence fue una activista por los derechos de las personas con discapacidad que trabajó con varias organizaciones de mujeres con discapacidad en Uganda.
También ocupó la Dirección del Distrito de Lira de la Asociación de Mujeres con Discapacidad, así como del foro de Consejeras Mujeres del Distrito de Lira. Formada como consejera para personas con discapacidad y para madres y padres de niñxs con discapacidad, apoyó muchos proyectos que reclamaban mayor representación de las personas con discapacidad.
Murió en un accidente de motocicleta.

Nadine Ramaroson
Son soutien aux femmes et aux personnes les plus vulnérables de sa communauté a fait que Nadine était un modèle pour beaucoup. Elle était déterminée à aider les pauvres et les sans-abri en particulier.
Bien que sa mort ait été déclarée comme étant accidentelle, la famille Ramaroson, sur l’initiative de son père André Ramaroson, a mené une enquête qui a mis en évidence des preuves de son assassinat. Elle serait décédée dans un accident mortel survenu entre Soanierano - Ivongo et Ste Marie - une histoire qui a été réfutée par sa famille. Elle avait reçu de nombreuses menaces de mort pour ses positions politiques résolues. L’affaire est toujours en cours auprès des tribunaux à Antananarivo (la capitale de Madagascar).

Bunga or flower in English is something that is often associated with women in Indonesia. Meaning, a flower can also be associated with transgender women. Because transgender women are women. As beautiful, as strong, and they both lived not only waiting to be 'picked' but instead grew and bloom and died as they pleased. This work is a tribute to my transgender women friends on The International Transgender Day of Visibility.

Ika Vantiani is an Indonesian artist, curator and crafter based in Jakarta. Her works explores the idea of being a woman in today’s society with the intertwined between media and consumption. Ika uses the discipline of collage and expands it into workshop, installation, and street art. Ika is the member of artist collectives including Micro Galleries, The Collage Club and It’s In Your Hands Collective.

Meet Sabrina Sanchez, remarkable trans migrant woman, sex worker, organizer, transfeminist and one of the founders of the union OTRAS.
Originally from Mexico City, she migrated to Spain 17 years ago after getting a degree in communications and started working as a sex worker.
It didn’t take long before she became involved with trans activism and sex worker activism in Barcelona. After joining the collective Asociación de Profesionales del Sexo (Association of Sex Workers, Aprosex), she started working in its secretariat and founded the Spanish sex workers union OTRAS.
She currently lives in Amsterdam where she works as the coordinator of the European Sex Workers’ Alliance.
Fun fact: she’s also a car mechanic and serious runner!
