Protection of the Family

The Issue

Over the past few years, a troubling new trend at the international human rights level is being observed, where discourses on ‘protecting the family’ are being employed to defend violations committed against family members, to bolster and justify impunity, and to restrict equal rights within and to family life.

The campaign to "Protect the Family" is driven by ultra-conservative efforts to impose "traditional" and patriarchal interpretations of the family, and to move rights out of the hands of family members and into the institution of ‘the family’.

“Protection of the Family” efforts stem from:

  • rising traditionalism,
  • rising cultural, social and religious conservatism and
  • sentiment hostile to women’s human rights, sexual rights, child rights and the rights of persons with non-normative gender identities and sexual orientations.

Since 2014, a group of states have been operating as a bloc in human rights spaces under the name “Group of Friends of the Family”, and resolutions on “Protection of the Family” have been successfully passed every year since 2014.

This agenda has spread beyond the Human Rights Council. We have seen regressive language on “the family” being introduced at the Commission on the Status of Women, and attempts made to introduce it in negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Our Approach

AWID works with partners and allies to jointly resist “Protection of the Family” and other regressive agendas, and to uphold the universality of human rights.

In response to the increased influence of regressive actors in human rights spaces, AWID joined allies to form the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs).  OURs is a collaborative project that monitors, analyzes, and shares information on anti-rights initiatives like  “Protection of the Family”.

Rights at Risk, the first OURs report, charts a map of the actors making up the global anti-rights lobby, identifies their key discourses and strategies, and the effect they are having on our human rights.   

The report outlines “Protection of the Family” as an agenda that has fostered collaboration across a broad range of regressive actors at the UN.  It describes it as: “a strategic framework that houses “multiple patriarchal and anti-rights positions, where the framework, in turn, aims to justify and institutionalize these positions.”

Paula Andrea Rosero Ordóñez was a trial lawyer in the office of the Public Ministry in Samaniego, Nariño, the main agency defending citizens’ rights in Colombia.

She focused on civil and political rights, issues of impunity and justice, and contributed to uncovering the abuse of power, including corruption. She also participated in peacebuilding projects in her hometown Samaniego, such as the Municipal Peace Council and the Municipal Women’s Board. 

Paula received death threats after exposing the irregular handling of resources and complaining about acts of corruption at the Lorencita Villegas Hospital in the Nariñense municipality. She was murdered on 20 May 2019, when two men approached and shot her at close range.

Biography

Ekaete Judith Umoh est une défenseure internationale des droits des personnes en situation de handicap et experte en développement inclusif. Elle analyse avec finesse les questions relatives au genre, au handicap et au développement inclusif. Son rêve est d’accroître la visibilité des femmes et des filles en situation de handicap au sein du mouvement féministe international et dans tous les efforts de développement à travers le monde.

Passionnée d’activisme et de politique, Ekaete devient la première femme élue présidente de l’Association nationale des personnes en situation de handicap (Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, JONAPWD), au Nigéria. À ce titre, elle dirige les organisations de personnes en situation de handicap dans la lutte pour la signature de la loi nigériane sur le handicap de 2019, qu’elle défendait sans relâche depuis plus de 17 ans. Par la suite, elle rejoint CBM Global en tant que directrice nationale et joue un rôle pionnier à la tête de son équipe pendant trois ans, pour briser le cercle de la pauvreté et du handicap au Nigéria. Outre son activisme dans le domaine du handicap, Ekaete a été consultante auprès de plusieurs agences de développement, proposant son expertise technique de l’inclusion des personnes en situation de handicap dans la conception de programmes et projets.

An Analysis for Feminist Movements

Gender Impact Investing (GII) is now trending as a solution to gender inequality. Yet, as our report indicates, it is actually part of the problem. Public and private institutions marketing GII equate it with promotion of gender equality and with increased resources for women and girls.

Neither claim is evidence-based.

Rather, GII is another expression of subjecting our lives and societies to the same financial logic that has shaped, and continues shaping, the profound inequalities in our world.

With this report, AWID offers the readers - feminists, gender justice advocates and stakeholders in gender impact investing - a critical analysis and substantiated evidence to understand GII, its narratives, and economic and political implications for feminist movements.

Carol Thomas fue una pionera en el trabajo por los derechos sexuales y reproductivos de las mujeres en Sudáfrica. Fue una ginecóloga de gran talento y la fundadora del WomenSpace [EspacioDeMujeres].

No sólo las empleó en su práctica, sino que también abogó por proporcionar formas no tradicionales de asistencia sanitaria a las mujeres, ofreciendo servicios de alta calidad, empáticos y accesibles.

"Ella recibió no sólo la alegría de los embarazos y la llegada de nuevxs bebés, sino también la ansiedad que puede generar la infertilidad, un parto prematuro, el cáncer femenino, así como también la angustia de los abortos espontáneos y lxs mortinatxs". Helen Moffett

Carol pensó en nuevos paradigmas cuyo centro de atención fuesen las necesidades de las mujeres con menor acceso a los servicios y derechos que puede aportar una sociedad:

"El entorno socioeconómico imperante en el que nos encontramos hoy se traduce en una carga desproporcionada de enfermedades y desempleo que las mujeres tienen que soportar... Como mujer negra, desfavorecida en el pasado, tengo una idea clara de lo que está sucediendo en nuestras comunidades". - Carol Thomas

La innovadora y multipremiada empresa social de Carol, "“iMobiMaMa”, utilizaba los quioscos móviles y la tecnología interactiva para conectar directamente a las mujeres con servicios de salud prenatal y reproductiva, información y apoyo en  las comunidades de toda Sudáfrica. 

Carol apoyó a las mujeres tanto en los embarazos deseados como en los no deseados, y fue mentora de muchxs enfermerxs y doctorxs a lo largo de su vida.

Fue calificada, además, como ginecóloga de referencia "para las personas trans que podían recibir de ella una atención afirmativa. Ella supo cómo manejarse cuando muchas personas no tenían todavía en claro el lenguaje o los pronombres. Sus mantas calientes, su capacidad para escuchar y decir lo que necesitabas oír eran muy reconfortantes." -Marion Lynn Stevens.

Carol Thomas falleció el 12 de abril de 2019 a causa de una serie de complicaciones tras un doble trasplante de pulmón, en el punto más álgido de su carrera profesional.

Los homenajes que llegaron después de su muerte inesperada se refieren a ella de muchas formas: como " modelo a seguir, mujer guerrera, innovadora, líder dinámica, rompe-moldes, dínamo, científica brillante, doctora compasiva".

Sin duda, Carol Thomas será recordada y honrada por ser todo esto y mucho más.

Biography

Alejandra se passionne pour les droits des femmes et la justice de genre. Elle rêve de créer un monde qui place le soin en son cœur, celui des personnes comme celui de la nature. Experte féministe en droits humains, elle a travaillé dans des domaines en lien avec le genre, le climat, la justice sociale et économique au sein de diverses organisations internationales. Ses domaines d’expertise comprennent le développement des connaissances et la co-création, la recherche, la facilitation et le plaidoyer. Elle est titulaire d’un master en droits humains de l’université d’Essex et a rédigé et co-élaboré de nombreuses publications, dont l’article «Enragée: Femmes et Nature». La campagne Activisme Féministe Sans Peur s’appuie sur des entretiens et des recherches menés par Alejandra. 

Originaire d’Argentine, elle a vécu et travaillé dans plusieurs pays d’Europe et d’Amérique latine au cours des vingt dernières années. Alejandra aime la photographie, la mer, préparer des gâteaux avec sa fille et déguster des plats du monde entier. En tant que mère, elle met un point d’honneur à briser le cycle des schémas répétitifs transgénérationnels. Alejandra puise son énergie et son inspiration auprès des femmes extraordinaires qui font partie de sa vie, et qui vivent aux quatre coins du monde.

Promoción de los derechos universales y la justicia

Arrancar de raíz los fascismos y los fundamentalismos

En todo el mundo lxs defensorxs feministas, por los derechos de las mujeres y por la justicia de género están enfrentándose a las agendas fascistas y fundamentalistas. Estas fuerzas opresivas atacan a las mujeres, a las personas que tienen una identidad o expresión de género y/u orientación sexual no convencional y a otras comunidades oprimidas.

Las ideologías discriminatorias están socavando y cooptando nuestros sistemas y estándares de derechos humanos, para convertirlos en dominio de unxs pocxs.. Por esto, la iniciativa Promoción de los Derechos Universales y la Justicia (PDUJ) promueve la universalidad de los derechos, el principio fundante según el cual los derechos humanos les pertenecen a todxs sin excepción, sin importar quién sean.

Creamos un espacio para que los movimientos feministas, de derechos de las mujeres y de justicia de género y sus aliadxs puedan reconocer la influencia y el impacto de lxs actorxs anti-derechos., pensar estrategias y realizar acciones colectivas para contrarrestarlos También buscamos promover los derechos de las mujeres y los marcos, las normas y las propuestas feministas así como proteger y promover la universalidad de los derechos.

Nuestras acciones

A través de esta iniciativa, nosotrxs:

  • Construimos conocimiento: Apoyamos a los movimientos feministas, de derechos de las mujeres y de justicia de género difundiendo y divulgando conocimiento y mensajes clave sobre lxs actorxs anti-derechos, sus estrategias y el impacto que tienen sobre los sistemas internacionales de derechos humanos a través del liderazgo de AWID en el Observatorio sobre la Universalidad de los Derechos (OURs)*.

  • Promovemos agendas feministas: Nos aliamos con diversos actores en espacios internacionales de derechos humanos, incluyendo el Consejo de Derechos Humanos, la Comisión sobre Población y Desarrollo, la Comisión sobre la Condición Social y Jurídica de las Mujeres y la Asamblea General de la ONU. .

  • Generamos y amplificamos alternativas: Junto con nuestra membresía, buscamos que los movimientos que se organizan a nivel local, nacional y regional en distintos espacios conozcan y exijan que se apliquen los compromisos, resoluciones y normas internacionales.

  • Movilizamos la acción solidaria: Actuamos junto a las defensoras de derechos humanos, incluyendo a activistas trans e intersex, así como a lxs jóvenes feministas, para enfrentar los fundamentalismos y fascismos y para llamar la atención sobre situaciones de peligro.

Mereani Naisua Senebici, que l’on appelait aussi « Sua », a été membre de l’Association des jeunes femmes chrétiennes (YWCA) des Fidji pendant de longues années.

En plus d’avoir travaillé avec divers groupes de femmes dans des contextes multiraciaux, ruraux et urbains, elle s’est impliquée dans le soutien et la promotion des droits des femmes et des jeunes femmes.

Au YWCA de Lautoka, elle travaillait avec des femmes d’origine indienne et comptait parmi les pionnières du développement de la pratique sportive et la participation des femmes et athlètes trans localement.

« Les membres du YWCA des Fidji ont profondément aimé Sua pour son dévouement et son soutien inébranlable envers tous les efforts déployés par l’organisation » – Tupou Vere

Mereani faisait partie de la House of Sarah (HoS), une initiative de l’Association of Anglican Women (AAW) lancée en 2009, un organisme de sensibilisation autour des violences basées sur le genre et de soutien des femmes victimes de violence. Ayant commencé sa pratique en tant que bénévole dévouée, elle offrait notamment son soutien aux femmes dans tout le Pacifique.
Mereani s’est éteinte en 2019.
