Protection of the Family
The Issue
Over the past few years, a troubling new trend at the international human rights level is being observed, where discourses on ‘protecting the family’ are being employed to defend violations committed against family members, to bolster and justify impunity, and to restrict equal rights within and to family life.
The campaign to "Protect the Family" is driven by ultra-conservative efforts to impose "traditional" and patriarchal interpretations of the family, and to move rights out of the hands of family members and into the institution of ‘the family’.
“Protection of the Family” efforts stem from:
- rising traditionalism,
- rising cultural, social and religious conservatism and
- sentiment hostile to women’s human rights, sexual rights, child rights and the rights of persons with non-normative gender identities and sexual orientations.
Since 2014, a group of states have been operating as a bloc in human rights spaces under the name “Group of Friends of the Family”, and resolutions on “Protection of the Family” have been successfully passed every year since 2014.
This agenda has spread beyond the Human Rights Council. We have seen regressive language on “the family” being introduced at the Commission on the Status of Women, and attempts made to introduce it in negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our Approach
AWID works with partners and allies to jointly resist “Protection of the Family” and other regressive agendas, and to uphold the universality of human rights.
In response to the increased influence of regressive actors in human rights spaces, AWID joined allies to form the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). OURs is a collaborative project that monitors, analyzes, and shares information on anti-rights initiatives like “Protection of the Family”.
Rights at Risk, the first OURs report, charts a map of the actors making up the global anti-rights lobby, identifies their key discourses and strategies, and the effect they are having on our human rights.
The report outlines “Protection of the Family” as an agenda that has fostered collaboration across a broad range of regressive actors at the UN. It describes it as: “a strategic framework that houses “multiple patriarchal and anti-rights positions, where the framework, in turn, aims to justify and institutionalize these positions.”

L’AWID imagine un monde où les réalités féministes prospèrent, où les ressources et le pouvoir sont partagés de façon à permettre à chacun-e, y compris aux générations futures, de s’épanouir et de réaliser leur plein potentiel dans la dignité, l’amour et le respect et où la Terre nourrit la vie dans toute sa diversité.
Notre mission
Notre mission est d’aider les mouvements féministes, en faveur des droits des femmes et de la justice de genre à s’épanouir, à être un élément moteur de l’opposition aux systèmes d’oppression et à co-créer des réalités féministes.

Nous promouvons notre travail au travers des stratégies suivantes:
Plaidoyer et campagnes
Nous tirons collectivement parti de notre portée, de notre pouvoir, de nos ressources et de nos relations afin d’influencer stratégiquement les politiques et les pratiques. Nous visons à promouvoir les programmes féministes à travers les collaborations que nous menons avec les décideurs politiques, les fonda-trices-teurs et les activistes au sein des espaces régionaux et internationaux. Dans le cadre des efforts que nous déployons pour renforcer notre pouvoir et influence collectifs, nous incitons également les mouvements féministes et de lutte pour les droits des femmes à accorder une place centrale aux mouvements historiquement opprimés.
Rassemblement et coopération
Nous nous servons de notre pouvoir mobilisateur pour faciliter le dialogue et élaborer des stratégies sur des questions clés. Nous connectons nos membres et nos allié-e-s les une-s- aux autres, et partageons et échangeons nos ressources, nos idées et nos actions sur des questions pertinentes. Nous organisons des rassemblements et mettons à disposition des espaces nous permettant de consolider nos mouvements et de nouer des rapports les un-e-s avec les autres, d’imaginer et d’envisager de nouveaux horizons, de développer des stratégies d’influence efficaces et de créer ensemble des programmes et des processus importants.
Solidarité et construction de liens
Nous mobilisons nos membres et les mouvements que nous soutenons pour consolider l’action collective en solidarité avec les causes et les défenseur-e-s féministes en danger. Nous créons des partenariats, pratiquons l’écoute active et tissons des liens de solidarité continus et sur le long terme. Aux côtés de défenseur-e-s, nous oeuvrons à établir une base de connaissances et à soutenir des réseaux de solidarité autour de la protection et du bien-être.
Arts et expression créative
Nous reconnaissons la valeur unique des stratégies culturelles et créatives dans la lutte contre les oppressions et l’injustice. Nous travaillons avec des artistes qui accordent une place prépondérante aux voix féministes et aux récits des communautés historiquement opprimées. Nous voyons en cette tactique émergente l’art et l’expression créative comme autant de moyens nous permettant d’imaginer un monde où l’on continue de célébrer des réalités féministes, et où ces dernières continuent de prospérer.
Nos initiatives
Nos initiatives oeuvrent à l’intersection des zones de changement que nous abordons, des mouvements que nous priorisons et des stratégies que nous déployons:
Promotion des droits universels et de la justice
Nous surveillons, documentons et visibilisons la façon dont les acteurs anti-droits opèrent et conspirent au sein des espaces multilatéraux, et soutenons les mouvements et allié-e-s féministes, oeuvrant en faveur des droits des femmes et de la justice de genre pour contrer leur influence et leur impact.
Construction d’économies féministes
En travaillant sur l’extractivisme, la justice fiscale et la responsabilisation des entreprises, nous acquérons des connaissances sur le pouvoir des entreprises et leur influence; nous plaidons pour la responsabilisation des entreprises et la distribution équitable des richesses; et amplifions les propositions féministes en faveur d’économies plus justes.
Ressources des mouvements féministes
Nous développons des analyses accessibles et orientées vers l’action concernant l’état des ressources attribuées aux mouvements féministes. Nous nous efforçons d’influencer les pratiques et politiques des donateurs, d’approfondir et maintenir les subventions en faveur de changements sociaux féministes et de soutenir les besoins et les stratégies des mouvements.
L’AWID s’engage expressément à avoir de l’impact dans le monde et à renforcer nos propres résiliences et apprentissages organisationnels afin de consolider davantage les mouvements féministes internationaux.

What will be different about this Forum?
We have always worked towards ensuring that our Forums are co-developed with partners, movements and our priority constituencies.
For our upcoming Forum, we aim to deepen and strengthen that spirit and practice of co-creation and collaboration. We also recognize the need to improve the balance between the inclusion of many voices and experiences with room for participants and staff to breathe, take pause and enjoy some downtime.
This Forum will be different in the following ways:
- We will have far less organized Forum activities because we want people to have time to engage, experience, process, talk to each other, etc. This is key to communicate: you can come to the Forum, be very engaged and active and not facilitate any organized activity (or “session”).
- We will have Open Spaces - at least one whole afternoon without any organized activities - but also physical spaces available throughout the Forum for people to self-organize meetings, etc.
- We have a Content and Methodology Committee made up of feminists from different regions with expertise on participatory methodologies to support us and all those leading activities at the Forum to use creative and engaging formats for the Forum activities.
From “WID” to “GAD” to Women’s Rights: The First Twenty Years of AWID
In 2002 AWID celebrated its 20th anniversary. Given the challenging political, economic and funding environment in which women's organizations must survive, a milestone such as this is worthy of recognition.
In the past two decades the geo-political landscape has been transformed and development theories have come and gone, but approaches to ensure women benefit from development processes have endured.
In its twenty-year history, AWID grew from a volunteer organization for U.S. "Women in Development" (WID) specialists to an international network striving to support proactive and strategic gender equality research, activism and policy dialogue.
On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, this paper charts not only the changes in AWID's organizational structure and goals but also the shifts in policy approaches to gender equality in a changing global environment, through the lens of a membership organization committed to improving the lives of women and girls everywhere.

Crear, Resister, Transform Festival created spaces for feminists to discuss issues around body, gender and sexualities, and explored the interconnections of how these issues are both deeply embodied experiences, and simultaneously a terrain where rights are constantly disputed and at risk in society.
The power of feminist movements lie in how we organise and take coordinated action, not only amongst our own communities and movements, but with allied social justice causes and groups. This space provided opportunities for movements to share and strengthen organizing and tactical strategies with each other.
The COVID-19 global health pandemic has made the failures of neo-liberal capitalism even more apparent than ever before, exposed the cracks in our systems, and highlighted the need and opportunities to build new realities. A feminist economic and social recovery requires all of us to make it together. This journal edition in partnership with Kohl: a Journal for Body and Gender Research, will explore feminist solutions, proposals and realities for transforming our current world, our bodies and our sexualities.

We welcome applications across the full range of thematic areas and intersections important to feminist and gender justice movements. In the application form, you will be able to mark more than one theme that fits your activity.
- Free Bodies, Free Spirits: all things bodily autonomy, gender and sexuality, reproductive health and rights, freedom from gender-based violence, freedom to live in safety, pleasure and joy in our diverse bodies, identities and communities, and much, much more.
- Resisting Anti-Rights: locally and globally, feminists are leading the way in resisting all forms of intersectional oppressions, including fascisms, fundamentalisms, and authoritarian regimes; we have a lot to share and strategize with each other about.
- Movements and Organizing: let us get to know each other’s movements. From navigation of power (internal and external) to protection strategies in the face of the repression of women and gender-diverse human rights defenders, from alliance-building to creative and successful forms of organizing, let’s learn and be inspired by each other.
- Economic Justice and Feminist Economies: this theme encompasses all feminist efforts to transform our economies, from challenging dominant extractive models and defending labor rights to embodying and living feminist economic practices and alternatives in everyday life.
- Funding/Resourcing Activism: securing much-needed funding is a shared challenge for movements across the world; let us together unpack the feminist funding ecosystem, from critical analysis to first-hand experiences and practical ways to fund feminist work.
- Climate, Environmental Justice, Land and Water: ecological and climate justice has deep roots in many of our movements and communities; from ancient traditions to futuristic visions, from ecology villages to campaigns to end extractivism and health justice, we invite a full scope of activities on all aspects of climate and environmental justice.
- Militarization, War and Conflict: we aim to spotlight feminist organizing, analysis and experiences often on the frontline of crisis response and helping to sustain life, community and justice in the harshest times of war and protracted conflict.
- Decolonization: decolonization is central to each and every one of our themes, yet it also stands on its own, as a key feminist agenda of resistance and world-building in many colonial and post-colonial realities.
- Digital Realities and Feminist Tech: we welcome an opportunity to celebrate the incredible feminist initiatives that transform digital worlds, challenge big tech power structures, and democratize technology as truly by and for the people.

Many beautiful things emerged from the 2016 Black Feminisms Forum (BFF) that was organized by an Advisory Group and funded by AWID. Some of the independent organizing that arose from the BFF include Black feminist organizing in Brazil. While we won’t have another BFF this year, we remain committed to sharing some key learnings with anyone interested in continuing work around Black feminist organizing.
Trans* rights require stronger protection
These transgender women were murdered because of their activism and their gender identity. There are insufficient laws recognizing trans* rights, and even where these laws exist, very little is being done to safeguard the rights of trans* people. Please join AWID in honoring these defenders, their activism and legacy by sharing the memes below with your colleagues, networks and friends and by using the hashtags #WHRDTribute and #16Days.
