Protection of the Family
The Issue
Over the past few years, a troubling new trend at the international human rights level is being observed, where discourses on ‘protecting the family’ are being employed to defend violations committed against family members, to bolster and justify impunity, and to restrict equal rights within and to family life.
The campaign to "Protect the Family" is driven by ultra-conservative efforts to impose "traditional" and patriarchal interpretations of the family, and to move rights out of the hands of family members and into the institution of ‘the family’.
“Protection of the Family” efforts stem from:
- rising traditionalism,
- rising cultural, social and religious conservatism and
- sentiment hostile to women’s human rights, sexual rights, child rights and the rights of persons with non-normative gender identities and sexual orientations.
Since 2014, a group of states have been operating as a bloc in human rights spaces under the name “Group of Friends of the Family”, and resolutions on “Protection of the Family” have been successfully passed every year since 2014.
This agenda has spread beyond the Human Rights Council. We have seen regressive language on “the family” being introduced at the Commission on the Status of Women, and attempts made to introduce it in negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our Approach
AWID works with partners and allies to jointly resist “Protection of the Family” and other regressive agendas, and to uphold the universality of human rights.
In response to the increased influence of regressive actors in human rights spaces, AWID joined allies to form the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). OURs is a collaborative project that monitors, analyzes, and shares information on anti-rights initiatives like “Protection of the Family”.
Rights at Risk, the first OURs report, charts a map of the actors making up the global anti-rights lobby, identifies their key discourses and strategies, and the effect they are having on our human rights.
The report outlines “Protection of the Family” as an agenda that has fostered collaboration across a broad range of regressive actors at the UN. It describes it as: “a strategic framework that houses “multiple patriarchal and anti-rights positions, where the framework, in turn, aims to justify and institutionalize these positions.”

Veena Singh
Biography
Originaire des Fidji, Veena Singh est féministe et femme de couleur. Élevée dans une petite commune rurale de ces îles, elle tire sa force de la richesse de son héritage mixte (sa mère est une femme autochtone fidjienne et son père est de descendance indo-fidjienne). L’identité et le vécu de Veena ont largement façonné son engagement envers la justice, l’équité et l’inclusion. Avec plus d’une vingtaine d’années d’expérience dans les droits humains, l’égalité des genres, l’épanouissement de la communauté et l’inclusion sociale, Veena croit passionnément qu’il faut faire bouger les lignes du pouvoir pour provoquer le changement transformateur qui permettra de construire l’économie de la bienveillance. Elle travaille dans des domaines très divers, notamment l’épanouissement de la communauté ; les femmes, la paix et la sécurité ; les politiques sociales ; les droits humains ; et le plaidoyer politique.
Elle est profondément engagée à faire avancer l’inclusion, la paix et la justice, la santé et les droits sexuels et reproductifs, la justice climatique, la justice transitionnelle et les droits humains. Elle possède une vaste expérience des réseaux de terrain, des organisations internationales et des institutions gouvernementales, et elle place toujours au centre les approches pilotées à l’échelle locale et par les communautés ainsi que les principes féministes.
En dehors de sa « vie de bureau », Veena est une défenseuse de l’environnement, de la santé mentale et c’est aussi une écrivaine. Mère de 11 chats, elle ne jure que par les saris et a un gros faible pour le courrier traditionnel et les cartes postales. Observatrice attentive des mouvements féministes aux Fidji et dans le Pacifique, Veena est en plein parcours personnel pour « décoloniser sa pensée et soi-même, en entreprenant une introspection radicale ». Par-dessus tout, elle est animée par le désir et le rêve de livrer des écrits auxquels pouvoir s’identifier, qui résonnent auprès des autres, en connectant avec la diaspora du Pacifique et en amplifiant les voix marginalisées.

With 1,773 fossil fuel lobbyists at last year's COP29, we're heading alongside other feminists to Belém, Brazil for COP30, from 10 November – 21 November 2025, where we will continue to denounce false solutions, call out corporate capture, demand that States uphold their commitments under the Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities and push for feminist economic alternatives.
$2.7 trillion for the military. $300 billion for climate justice. We're here to flip the script.
Crear | Résister | Transform: un recorrido por el Festival
Mientras el capitalismo heteropatriarcal continúa forzándonos al consumismo y el acatamiento, observamos que nuestras luchas están siendo compartimentadas y separadas por fronteras tanto físicas como virtuales.
Y con los desafíos adicionales presentados por una pandemia global que todavía deben ser superados, esta estrategia de «divide y vencerás» ha sido favorable para la proliferación de la explotación en muchas áreas.
No obstante esto, desde el 1° hasta el 30 de septiembre de 2021, un festival para movimientos feministas! de AWID nos llevó a un viaje sobre lo que significa encarnar nuestras realidades en espacios virtuales. En el Festival se reunieron activistas feministas de todo el mundo, no solo para compartir experiencias de libertades duramente conquistadas, de resistencias y de solidaridades más allá de las fronteras, sino para articular lo que podría ser una forma transnacional de compañerismo.
Esta solidaridad tiene el potencial de desafiar las fronteras, tejiendo una visión del futuro que es transformadora, porque es abolicionista [del complejo industrial carcelario] y anticapitalista. A lo largo de un mes, a través de las infraestructuras digitales que ocupamos con nuestra cuiridad / queeridad, nuestra resistencia y nuestros imaginarios, el Festival nos mostró una forma de desviarnos de los sistemas que nos hacen cómplices de la opresión de otras personas y de nosotrxs mismxs.
Si bien Audre Lorde nos enseñó que las herramientas del amo nunca desarmarán la casa del amo, Sara Ahmed nos demostró que podemos utilizarlas en forma indebida. Dado que teníamos que dar espacio a la asamblea, y a pesar de todas las otras demandas sobre nuestro tiempo, fue posible imaginar una disrupción de la realidad del capitalismo heteropatriarcal.
Ahora bien, si entendemos la asamblea como una forma de placer, entonces, se hace posible establecer el vínculo entre el placer transgresor y la resistencia transnacional/transdigital: entre las clases de placer que desafían las fronteras por un lado, y la cuiridad / queeridad, lo camp, las luchas por la tierra y los movimientos indigenistas, el anticapitalismo y la organización política anticolonial por el otro.
Esta edición intentó captar un sentido de cómo el ejercicio de la asamblea en el Festival adoptó múltiples formas e imaginaciones. Además de contar con las colaboraciones directas de algunxs de sus conferencistas y soñadorxs, trajimos a una plétora de otras voces del Sur global para que conversaran sobre muchos de sus temas y sujetxs. Lo que sigue es una muestra de algunos de los paneles del Festival que más nos inspiraron.
Caroline Sin
Biography
Caroline ha estado de forma periódica en AWID; en fechas anteriores, organizó los foros de 2005 y 2008 en Bangkok y Ciudad del Cabo, y cumplió otras funciones institucionales. Antes de incorporarse a AWID, impartió clases de inglés de pregrado, luego abandonó el ámbito académico para dirigir el Festival Internacional de Cine Asiático de Toronto y trabajar en otros proyectos. En fechas más recientes, se ha desempeñado como Responsable de Operaciones en Spring Strategies. Fuera del plano laboral, Caroline generalmente puede ser hallada a su jardín, en comunión con sus queridas plantas e intentando hacer las paces con los insectos y los roedores que suelen aparecer.

Ekaete Judith Umoh
Biography
Ekaete Judith Umoh est une défenseure internationale des droits des personnes en situation de handicap et experte en développement inclusif. Elle analyse avec finesse les questions relatives au genre, au handicap et au développement inclusif. Son rêve est d’accroître la visibilité des femmes et des filles en situation de handicap au sein du mouvement féministe international et dans tous les efforts de développement à travers le monde.
Passionnée d’activisme et de politique, Ekaete devient la première femme élue présidente de l’Association nationale des personnes en situation de handicap (Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, JONAPWD), au Nigéria. À ce titre, elle dirige les organisations de personnes en situation de handicap dans la lutte pour la signature de la loi nigériane sur le handicap de 2019, qu’elle défendait sans relâche depuis plus de 17 ans. Par la suite, elle rejoint CBM Global en tant que directrice nationale et joue un rôle pionnier à la tête de son équipe pendant trois ans, pour briser le cercle de la pauvreté et du handicap au Nigéria. Outre son activisme dans le domaine du handicap, Ekaete a été consultante auprès de plusieurs agences de développement, proposant son expertise technique de l’inclusion des personnes en situation de handicap dans la conception de programmes et projets.

We look forward to working together with our members, partners and funders in creating the worlds we believe in, celebrating the wins and speaking truth to power in service of feminist movements globally.

Influencing, advocacy and campaigning
We collaboratively leverage our access, power, resources and relationships to strategically influence policy and practice. We aim to advance feminist agendas through our work with policy makers, funders and activists in regional and global spaces. We also work to influence feminist and women’s rights movements to centre historically oppressed movements as part of efforts to strengthen our collective power and influence.
Convening and connecting
We use our convening power to facilitate dialogue and strategize on key issues. We connect our members and allies with one another, sharing and exchanging resources, ideas and action across relevant issues. We organize and facilitate spaces to strengthen and engage across movements, to imagine and envisage new futures, to develop effective influencing tactics and to co-create powerful agendas and processes.
Solidarity and bridge-building
We work to mobilize our members and the movements we support to strengthen collective action in solidarity with feminist causes and defenders at risk. We build partnerships, engage in active listening and ongoing, long-term, solidarity. We work with defenders to build a body of knowledge and support networks of solidarity on protection and wellbeing.
Arts and creative expression
We recognize the unique and strategic value of cultural and creative strategies in the struggle against oppression and injustice. We work with artists who centre feminist voices and the narratives of historically oppressed communities. In this emerging tactic, we see art and creative expression helping us envision a world where feminist realities continue to flourish and be celebrated.

Our initiatives work at the intersections of the sites of change we work to address, the movements we prioritize, and the tactics we use:
Advancing Universal Rights and Justice
We monitor, document and make visible how anti-rights actors are operating and colluding in multilateral spaces and support feminist, women’s rights and gender justice movements and allies to counter their influence and impact.
Building Feminist Economies
Working on extractivism, tax justice and corporate accountability, we build knowledge on corporate power and influence; advocate for corporate accountability and equitable distribution of wealth; and amplify feminist proposals for just economies.
Resourcing Feminist Movements
We develop accessible, action-oriented analysis on the state of resourcing for feminist movements. We aim to influence funders’ policies and practices, deepen and sustain funding for feminist social change, and support movements’ needs and strategies.
In addition to the impact we aim to have in the world, AWID is expressly committed to strengthening our own organizational learning and resilience in order to further strengthen global feminist movements.
