Memory as Resistance: A Tribute to WHRDs no longer with us
AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us.
In 2020, we are taking a turn
This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.
49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.
This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.
The stories of activists we honour keep their legacy alive and carry their inspiration forward into our movements’ future work.
The portraits of the 2020 edition are designed by award winning illustrator and animator, Louisa Bertman.
AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these activists and WHRDs and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

The Tribute was first launched in 2012
It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.
To date, 467 feminists and WHRDs are featured.

Las comunidades vulnerabilizadas al margen de las economías formales han ido construyendo modelos cooperativos alternativos basados en la autonomía, la cooperación, la corresponsabilidad, la autogestión y la solidaridad.
Las cooperativas y lugares de trabajo autogestionados por lxs trabajadorxs siempre han ofrecido formas alternativas de generar oportunidades de empleo, ingresos, seguridad social y ahorros y, al mismo tiempo, distribuir los ingresos de formas más comunitarias, sostenibles y seguras.
Pero es más que una oportunidad de empleo: es hacer realidad los sueños y construir economías feministas basadas en la solidaridad y el cuidado mutuo. Es crear un mundo donde nuestras vidas, nuestro trabajo y nuestras comunidades importen.
Esta es la historia de la Cooperativa Textil Nadia Echazú, la primera cooperativa creada y dirigida por y para personas travesti y trans en Argentina.
1. Concentra los recursos

Personas que se necesitan
- 1 o más personas que coordine/n la implementación de la metodología de investigación en general y garanticen que todos los componentes se completen en tiempo y forma (Secciones 2-11);
- 1 o más personas que formule/n los principales objetivos de la investigación y las preguntas-guía;
- 1 o más personas que pula/n e implemente/n la metodología de investigación; esto incluye recoger la información;
- 1 o más personas que realice/n análisis cualitativos y cuantitativos relevantes a partir de la información recogida;
- 1 o más personas que documente/n los resultados de la investigación y los preparen para presentarlos a la o las audiencias a las que quieras llegar con el mensaje;
- 1 o más personas que edite/n los productos finales;
- 1 o más personas que difundan la investigación y hagan incidencia utilizando los resultados.
Gastos posibles
- Salarios del personal de la organización y/o personas externas;
- Programas para analizar grandes volúmenes de datos si esto va a estar a cargo de la propia organización.
Las opciones son:
- SPSS
- Stata
- R (gratis) - Costos de producir publicaciones y otros productos de la investigación;
- Incentivos que quienes participen en la investigación pueden recibir por haber respondido la encuesta (optativo);
- Incentivos para las personas que sean consultadas acerca de la investigación (optativo).
Duración estimada
- Para el proceso de investigación: 6 a 18 meses, según el volumen de información y la capacidad del personal;
- Para la incidencia: 1-2 años, según las metas la tu organización.

- Lista de espacios virtuales y eventos/redes donde difundir la encuesta y presentar sus resultados;
- Lista de donantes, activistas y organizaciones por los derechos de las mujeres a quienes entrevistar;

- Lista de publicaciones a utilizar para la investigación secundaria.

Obiageli “Oby” Nwankwo
With a legal career spanning more than 30 years, Oby was known across Africa and around the world as a champion for gender justice and human rights.
She founded and served as Executive Director of the Civil Resource Development and Documentation Centre (CIRDDOC), a Nigerian NGO which sponsors trainings and network-building activities for members of civil society, parliamentarians and other key stakeholders to promote human rights, good governance and access to justice and rule of law.
Oby is remembered fondly by activists in Nigeria as an “extraordinary activist who displayed energy and passion towards the fight for gender equality and gender justice in Nigeria and across Africa.”
