AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us.
In 2020, we are taking a turn
This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.
49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.
This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.
The stories of activists we honour keep their legacy alive and carry their inspiration forward into our movements’ future work.
The portraits of the 2020 edition are designed by award winning illustrator and animator, Louisa Bertman.
AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these activists and WHRDs and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

The Tribute was first launched in 2012
It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.
To date, 467 feminists and WHRDs are featured.

Lara Kruger
Lara was a well-known and loved radio DJ on Motsweding FM in South Africa.
Lara was one of the first openly-transgender radio hosts on a mainstream station. She worked hard to shine a light on LGBTI issues.
Lara’s activism started at a young age when she would vocally defend her right to dress and behave as she felt comfortable to members of her community who didn’t yet understand what it meant to be transgender.
My Queer Ramadan

I pray with my family for the first time in six years while wrapped in a keffiyah I scavenged from a dumpster.
Since coming into myself, I have refused to pray in jamaat with my family. Joining in the ranks of hierarchy, “women” behind “men” irks me. It grates my skin and teeth to the degree where I can’t focus, and the standing, bowing, and kneeling feels like a battle against my true being. Each second listening, a betrayal of my nature. Instead, I pray by myself in my own way.
Yet this Ramadan, I feel different. Back in my childhood home after many years, I am choosing to fast. I choose suhoor with my family, and praying together feels like a natural extension of eating together. After eating, my mother, father, brother and I line up for fajr.
I pray behind Baba, but my prayer is my own. I close my eyes, staying with my breath and my body.
My eyes closed, I open my inner sight to a wide open window on a vista of mountains, bright sun spreading over a light mist of clouds. This was the view I had while praying in jamaat at a queer Muslim wedding I attended in the mountains of the South of France last September.
I lined up with the wedding guests, queer and trans folks of North and West African, Arab, and European descent. Folks of all faiths joined while some chose to stand in respect at the sides or behind. The groups did not fall along fault lines of “Muslim” or “non-Muslim,” “religious” or “non religious.” The two lovers marrying each led us in prayer, and so did the Muslim woman officiating the nikkah. Each of the three led us in two rounds of prayers, two raqat.
I showed up as I was, my body uncovered. I had not washed. I only passed my camera to a friend who chose to stand at the side.
In the first sujood, I broke down crying. I wore a jean dress that loves my body, one found at a thrift store my ex-girlfriend pointed me to.
The sobs come through my whole body during the prayer, and I put my head to the earth with my community like a homecoming. A return to the embrace of love both intensely personal and communal, and I am held.
It feels like swimming in the sea with multiple people: joyful togetherness. But when you go beneath the water, it’s just you and the current.
Like a dozen people buried in the same graveyard. Separate, but sharing the same soil. Becoming one with the growing earth.
That was how it felt to pray in communion at a queer Muslim wedding.
I welcomed the light of acceptance while showing up as myself that day, with a group of people who had also chosen to claim all the parts of themselves in love. That light made a home in me, and it illuminates my heart in the dark living room at fajr this Ramadan morning. Though I pray with my birth family who do not accept all of me, I see myself praying in jamaat at that glorious wedding with all of my queer Muslim ancestors, my queer angels, my lineage, my soul family, my queer Muslim family, all standing in prayer. Bowing as one.
My family’s home does not always feel like my own, though I am here now. I take the bukhoor from room to room, barefoot. Smolder from the censer, an incense that says, “Here I am.” Baraka, blessings from the source of all, Allah and the Goddess to each room in the house, bidding good and dispersing the unbidden.
As I write this the sky turns the same royal blue I am familiar with from exiting the club and pulling all-nighters. It is the gradient of morning I step into as I go to sleep.

El Foro Internacional de AWID es un evento de la comunidad global y, a la vez, un espacio para una transformación personal radical . Es un encuentro único: el Foro reúne los movimientos feministas, por los derechos de las mujeres, por la justicia de género, LBTQI+ y aliados, en toda nuestra diversidad y humanidad, para conectarnos, sanar y florecer. El Foro es un lugar donde lxs feministas del Sur Global y de las comunidades históricamente marginadas ocupan el centro de la escena, elaborando estrategias entre sí y con los movimientos aliados, donantes y creadores de políticas para alterar las relaciones de poder, establecer alianzas e inaugurar un mundo diferente y mejor.

María Cecilia Alfaro Quesada
María Cecilia dedicó la mayor parte de su vida a la incorporación de una perspectiva feminista y de género en el trabajo institucional y organizacional y en el de capacitación.
De niña, demostraba fuerte interés en el arte, la comunicación, la naturaleza, la literatura y el logro de la justicia, especialmente para las mujeres y los grupos marginados.
Estaba comprometida con los derechos sexuales y reproductivos y fue parte de la Junta Nacional para la Educación Integral en Sexualidad. Sus seres queridxs la recuerdan como «una luchadora apasionada e incansable» con un profundo compromiso con los derechos de las mujeres y lxs niñxs.

Rebelándonos Juntes: Conectar, Sanar, Florecer
El tema del Foro –– Rebelándonos Juntes –– es una invitación a vincularnos con todo nuestro ser, a conectarnos entre nosotrxs en forma focalizada, afectuosa y valiente, para que podamos sentir el latido de los movimientos globales y rebelarnos juntxs para enfrentar los desafíos de esta época.
Los movimientos feministas, por los derechos de las mujeres, por la justicia de género, LBTQI+ y aliados de todo el mundo están en una instancia crítica, ya que deben enfrentar una poderosa reacción contra los derechos y las libertades previamente ganados. Durante los últimos años, hemos asistido al rápido auge de los autoritarismos, a la violenta represión de la sociedad civil y la criminalización de las mujeres y las personas de género no normativo defensoras de los derechos humanos, a la escalada bélica y de los conflictos armados en muchas partes de nuestro mundo, a la perpetuación continua de las injusticias económicas y a las crisis sanitarias, ecológicas y climáticas entrecruzadas.
Nuestros movimientos están sacudidos y, a la vez, buscan construir y mantener la fortaleza necesaria para el trabajo que hay por delante. No podemos hacer este trabajo solxs, en nuestros núcleos aislados. La conexión y la sanación son esenciales para transformar los persistentes desequilibrios de poder y las líneas divisorias dentro de nuestros propios movimientos. Debemos trabajar y elaborar estrategias de manera interconectada, para que podamos florecer juntxs. El Foro de AWID promueve ese ingrediente vital de interconexión en el poder de resistencia, crecimiento e influencia transformadora de las organizaciones feministas de todo el planeta.
Peni Moore
Philosophe féministe radicale, Peni était aussi poète, écrivaine, dramaturge et compositrice.
Première coordinatrice du Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (Mouvement pour les droits des femmes aux Fidji), elle a laissé un héritage empreint de sa profonde préoccupation pour les droits fondamentaux des femmes, la justice et la paix. L’engagement de Peni en faveur de la justice sociale, économique et écologique et son travail remarquable lui a valu le respect de la communauté locale et internationale. Au sein des mouvements féministes traditionnels des Fidji, elle a été l’une des premières à travailler avec et aux côtés des personnes LGBTQI et a fourni une assistance concrète au mouvement des travailleurs et des travailleuses du sexe lorsqu’il s’est constitué aux Fidji.
Ses collègues l'ont décrite comme une personne formidable et une leader visionnaire du changement. Elle a inspiré beaucoup de personnes par sa créativité et son courage. Son travail a permis à de nombreuses personnes de se faire entendre, d’acquérir de nouvelles compétences et d’ouvrir de nouvelles voies, tant au niveau personnel que communautaire.
Colectivo Morivivi
Colectivo Moriviví is an all women artistic collective. Our artistic production consists of muralism, community-led muralism, and protest performance/actions. Our work is about democratizing art and bringing the narratives of Puerto Rican communities to the public sphere to create spaces in which they are validated. We believe that through artivism we can promote consciousness on social issues and strengthen our collective memory.
As part of their participation in AWID’s Artist Working Group, Colectivo Morivivi gathered a diverse group of members, partners and staff to facilitate a collaborative process of dreaming into, informing, and deciding on the content for a community mural through a multi-stage co-creation process. The project began with a remote conceptualization with feminists from different parts of the planet brought together by AWID, and then it evolved to its re-contextualization and realization in Puerto Rico. We were honored to have the input of local artists Las Nietas de Nonó(@lasnietasdenono), the participation of local women in the Community Painting Session, the logistics support from the Municipality of Caguas, and FRIDA Young Feminist Fund’s additional support to the collective.
The mural explores the transcendence of borders by presenting bodies like a map, in an embrace that highlights the intersection of the different feminist manifestations, practices and realities.

About Colectivo Morivivi
Moriviví is a collective of young female artists, working on public art since April 2013. Based in Puerto Rico, we’ve gained recognition for the creation of murals and community led arts.
The group started out in local Urban Art Festivals. As our work became more popular, organizations and community leadership started to reach out to us. We began as eight high schoolers who wanted to paint a mural together. However, in eight years of hard work, we’ve faced many challenges. Now we are in a period of transition. During this following year, we aim to restructure the collective internally. Our goal is to open new opportunities for collaborators and back-up our decision making process with a new evaluation system. In the long run, we aspire to become an alternative school of art practice for those interested in immersing themselves in community art production.

El 2 de septiembre de 2021 lxs increíbles activistas feministas y por la justicia social del festival Crear | Résister | Transform de AWID nos juntamos no solo para compartir estrategias, crear juntxs y transformar al mundo sino también para decir cosas sucias en Twitter.
Este ejercicio lo facilitó Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah, una de las fundadoras del blog Adventures From The Bedrooms of African Women [Aventuras desde los dormitorios de mujeres africanas] y autora de The Sex Lives of African Women, [Las vidas sexuales de las mujeres africanas] que se asoció con la plataforma digital mujerista y queer panafricana AfroFemHub, para preguntar cómo podemos explorar nuestro placer, nuestros deseos y nuestras fantasías en forma segura y consensuada a través de mensajes de texto.
En resumen: ¿cómo sextea unx feminista?
Creo que esta pregunta es fundamental porque involucra una cuestión más amplia: cómo nos manejamos en el mundo virtual desde una perspectiva feminista. Bajo el capitalismo, los discursos en torno a los cuerpos y al sexo pueden resultar deshumanizadores y distorsionadores; gestionar el placer sexual en espacios virtuales puede sentirse un acto performativo. Por eso, buscar vías para explorar cómo podemos compartir nuestro deseo en formas afirmativas y que nos entusiasmen puede ser una forma de resistir a los modelos dominantes de presentación y consumo así como una reivindicación de estos espacios y sus posibilidades de participación auténtica, demostrando que todo el sexting debería ser exactamente así: feminista.
Además, permitir que el discurso feminista asuma su lado más juguetón en el ámbito virtual nos ayuda a reformular esa narrativa tan difundida por la que actuar como feminista implica hacerlo con amargura y sin placer alguno. Pero, como bien sabemos, divertirnos es parte de nuestro trabajo político y un compomente intrínseco de lo que implica ser feminista.
Utilizando la etiqueta #SextLikeAFeminist, [SextComoFeminista] académiquxs y activistas de distintas partes del mundo aportaron sus tuits feministas más sedientos de placer y aquí les presento a mis diez favoritos.
Como lo demuestran estos tuits, resulta que sextear como feminista es sexy, divertido – y caliente – todo eso sin perder de vista el compromiso con la equidad y la justicia.
