Human Rights Council (HRC)
The Human Rights Council (HRC) is the key intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. It holds three regular sessions a year: in March, June and September. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the secretariat for the HRC.
The HRC works by:

Debating and passing resolutions on global human rights issues and human rights situations in particular countries

Examining complaints from victims of human rights violations or activist organizations on behalf of victims of human rights violations

Appointing independent experts (known as “Special Procedures”) to review human rights violations in specific countries and examine and further global human rights issues
-
Engaging in discussions with experts and governments on human rights issues
-
Assessing the human rights records of all UN Member States every four and a half years through the Universal Periodic Review
AWID works with feminist, progressive and human rights partners to share key knowledge, convene civil society dialogues and events, and influence negotiations and outcomes of the session.
With our partners, our work will:
◾️ Monitor, track and analyze anti-rights actors, discourses and strategies and their impact on resolutions
◾️ Raise awareness of the findings of the 2017 and 2021 OURs Trends Reports.
◾️Support the work of feminist UN experts in the face of backlash and pressure
◾️Advocate for state accountability
◾️ Work with feminist movements and civil society organizations to advance rights related to gender and sexuality.

¡Somos quienes hemos estado esperando!
Estamos comenzando un nuevo año: 2023. El COVID-19 continúa infectando y re infectando a muchas, muchas personas en todo el mundo. Estamos siendo testigos del resurgimiento de gobiernos de derecha y fascistas, incluso en lugares que quizás no esperábamos, como Suecia. La guerra, los conflictos armados y el aumento dramático de la militarización, el militarismo y el gasto militar están permitiendo la acumulación descomedida de capital por parte de unos pocos, con la participación de alianzas aparentemente "extrañas" que se arman, tanto de manera visible como invisible, donde las élites económicas y políticas del Norte y el Sur Global se están beneficiando más allá de nuestra imaginación más desenfrenada. Mientras tanto, nuestra gente y el medio ambiente natural pagan enormes costos y sufren todas las esperadas e inesperadas consecuencias.
Como todes ustedes y todes nosotres en AWID sabemos, les feministas en múltiples movimientos alrededor del mundo están resistiendo y organizándose contra las múltiples caras de la tiranía, creando estructuras alternativas, implementando estrategias de base y construyendo alianzas transnacionales. Estamos generando alegría, inspirándonos unes a otres, cantando y bailando dentro y en contra de la cultura predominante de muerte y cinismo que parece haber envuelto a gran parte del mundo.
Nosotres, el personal y la Junta Directiva de AWID, estamos más preparades e inspirades que nunca para enfrentar los desafíos, fortaleciendo nuestras relaciones con nuestra membresía y organizaciones socias, reuniéndonos y conociendo a quienes aún tenemos que conocer y hacer lo que hacemos mejor: apoyar a los movimientos feministas globales. Aunque nos entristeció la partida de nuestras queridas ex-co-eds Cindy y Hakima, nuestras maravillosas nuevas co-eds Faye e Inna, junto con el personal comprometido y creativo, han aprovechado el momento que encapsula tanto las oportunidades como las amenazas.
Sin duda, todes nosotres en AWID y toda la gente de nuestro movimiento lo sabemos… como escribió la poeta y activista caribeña estadounidense June Jordan a las mujeres activistas sudafricanas durante el apogeo del régimen del apartheid: “¡Somos quienes hemos estado esperando!”
Qu'est-ce que le Forum international de l'AWID ?
Le Forum international de l’AWID est un événement phare que l’association organise tous les trois ou quatre ans. C'est la plus importante manifestation au monde entièrement consacrée aux mouvements féministes et de justice de genre dans toute leur diversité. Il s'agit d'un rassemblement mondial qui réunit activistes féministes, mouvements alliés, universitaires, bailleurs de fonds et décideur·e·s politiques. Les forums se tiennent successivement dans différentes régions et différents pays du sud mondial.
Cristina Bautista

Cristina Bautista was a member of the Nasa Indigenous people’s community whose home is situated in the region of Northern Cauca, Colombia. She was part of their resistance as a leader, land rights defender, social worker, and governor of the Nasa Tacueyó Indigenous reserve.
A tireless defender of the rights of Nasa people, Cristina spoke strongly and loudly against the violence directed at her community. In a speech before the United Nations, she called for the protection of Indigenous women’s lives and their involvement in different spheres of life. In 2017, Cristina was a UN Human Rights Office Indigenous fellow and she was awarded a grant from the UN Voluntary Fund for Indigenous Peoples in 2019.
“I would like to bring to light the current situation of the Indigenous people in Colombia, the killing of Indigenous leaders, the repression of social protest. Instead of helping, the peace deal has increased war and the exploitation of sacred territories in Colombia… In the current situation, in almost all Indigenous nations as women we have been working to find a better future for our families. I don’t want more women from the countryside to continue living under these circumstances. We need opportunities for Indigenous women to participate in politics, in the economy, in society and in culture. Today gives me true strength, to see all these women here and that I am not alone.” - Cristina Bautista, 2019
On 29 October 2019, Cristina was murdered along with four unarmed Indigenous guards in an attack which was allegedly carried out by armed members of “Dagoberto Ramos”, a FARC dissident group.
According to Global Witness, “the murder of community and social leaders has risen dramatically in Colombia in recent years.”
“The Nasa community has repeatedly raised the alarm with the authorities about threats to their safety. Despite efforts by successive Colombian Governments, indigenous peoples continue to face great risks, especially religious or community leaders like Cristina Bautista.” - UN press briefing, 1 November 2019

Registration will start early 2024. We will announce the exact registration date and registration fee soon. Registration will include participation in the Forum, plus lunch and snacks (breakfast to be provided at the hotels), and one onsite dinner.

Paulina Cruz Ruiz
Paulina Cruz Ruiz, de la región de Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, en Guatemala, fue una autoridad ancestral Maya Achí (Indígena) y una defensora de los derechos humanos. Paulina se involucró activamente en la organización comunitaria y la resistencia, lo cual incluyó la adopción de medidas legales contra los proyectos mineros en territorios Indígenas, proyectos que afectarían y perjudicarían severamente el tejido socio ambiental.
"El modelo de industria extractiva promovido por el gobierno guatemalteco y la construcción de proyectos de desarrollo a gran escala en tierras indígenas, sin el consentimiento de la comunidad afectada, ha sido una fuente de disputas permanentes con los movimientos de resistencia". - Minority Rights Group International
Paulina también formó parte de la Marcha por la Dignidad, la Vida y la Justicia, del 1º de mayo de 2019, en la cual miles de guatemaltecxs iniciaron una marcha de ocho días contra la corrupción y la impunidad en la persecución y el asesinato de dirigentes de derechos humanos, líderes campesinxs e indígenas y defensorxs de la tierra.
Paulina fue asesinada el 14 de septiembre de 2019 cerca de su casa en la aldea de Xococ.
Según el Grupo Internacional de Derechos de las Minorías: "actualmente, uno de los principales problemas que afectan a las comunidades mayas es la creciente actividad de la industria minera".

2002: les discussions sur les questions relatives au financement du développement commencent
La Conférence de Monterrey sur le financement du développement a marqué le début des discussions sur les questions relatives au financement du développement.
- Le Consensus de Monterrey a été adopté lors de cette première conférence internationale sur le financement du développement. Il s’agissait de la première réunion au sommet organisée sous l’égide des Nations Unies à traiter des questions financières fondamentales et des problématiques connexes relatives au développement mondial.
- La conférence et ses phases préparatoires furent le théâtre d’une coopération sans précédent entre les Nations Unies, la Banque mondiale (BM), le Fonds monétaire international (FMI) et l'Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC), montrant une partie des efforts entrepris pour promouvoir une cohérence et une homogénéité plus importantes au sein des systèmes et institutions monétaires, commerciaux et financiers internationaux.
- Lors de cette conférence, les débats sur le financement du développement ont, pour la première fois, impliqué les gouvernements, des représentant-e-s de la société civile et le secteur privé. Ces acteurs ont porté les discussions au-delà des aspects « techniques » pour traiter des modalités de mobilisation et de canalisation des ressources financières nécessaires à la mise en œuvre des objectifs de développement internationalement convenus auparavant lors des sommets et conférences des Nations Unies des années 1990. Parmi ces objectifs figurent notamment les objectifs du Millénaire pour le développement (OMD).
- Le Caucus des femmes a non seulement noté le caractère historique de cette conférence et déclaré que celle-ci pouvait permettre de relever les défis structurels qui continuaient à ralentir le développement, mais il a aussi souligné les inquiétudes engendrées par les conséquences de la militarisation croissante et de la montée des fondamentalismes à l’encontre des femmes, et ceci malgré le fait que le Consensus de Monterrey considérait que le système économique et financier mondial fonctionnait au profit de toutes et tous.
