Confronting Extractivism & Corporate Power

Women human rights defenders (WHRDs) worldwide defend their lands, livelihoods and communities from extractive industries and corporate power. They stand against powerful economic and political interests driving land theft, displacement of communities, loss of livelihoods, and environmental degradation.

Why resist extractive industries?

Extractivism is an economic and political model of development that commodifies nature and prioritizes profit over human rights and the environment. Rooted in colonial history, it reinforces social and economic inequalities locally and globally. Often, Black, rural and Indigenous women are the most affected by extractivism, and are largely excluded from decision-making. Defying these patriarchal and neo-colonial forces, women rise in defense of rights, lands, people and nature.

Critical risks and gender-specific violence

WHRDs confronting extractive industries experience a range of risks, threats and violations, including criminalization, stigmatization, violence and intimidation.  Their stories reveal a strong aspect of gendered and sexualized violence. Perpetrators include state and local authorities, corporations, police, military, paramilitary and private security forces, and at times their own communities.

Acting together

AWID and the Women Human Rights Defenders International Coalition (WHRD-IC) are pleased to announce “Women Human Rights Defenders Confronting Extractivism and Corporate Power”; a cross-regional research project documenting the lived experiences of WHRDs from Asia, Africa and Latin America.

We encourage activists, members of social movements, organized civil society, donors and policy makers to read and use these products for advocacy, education and inspiration.

Khaoula Ksiksi

Biography

Khaoula Ksiksi est une fervente défenseuse de la justice, de l’équité et de la libération. Dans son rôle de conseillère en matière de genre, d’égalité, de diversité et d’inclusion (GEDI), elle œuvre à faire de l’inclusion une réalité concrète, pas simplement un concept politique, au sein des programmes humanitaires et des interventions en situation de crise. Elle collabore avec diverses équipes pour combattre l’oppression structurelle en déployant des approches audacieuses et transformatrices qui s’appuient sur les expériences vécues.

Son activisme a débuté au cœur du mouvement antiraciste tunisien. Au sein de l’organisation Mnemty, elle a contribué à l’adoption de la première législation anti-discrimination du pays, obligeant la société tunisienne à reconnaître l’existence de l’injustice raciale. Par la suite, elle a co-fondé le collectif Voix des Femmes Tunisiennes Noires, une initiative visant à valoriser le leadership des femmes noires, à développer des réseaux de solidarité et à revendiquer une visibilité dans une société qui tend à les réduire au silence.

Khaoula est également l’une des fondatrices de Falgatna, un mouvement queer-féministe radical qui œuvre pour la défense des droits OSIGEGCS, tout en apportant son soutien aux communautés LGBTQI+ par des actions directes, des stratégies de cyberrésistance et un plaidoyer centré sur les survivant·es.

Auparavant, elle a dirigé des projets régionaux féministes et de justice climatique à la Fondation Rosa Luxemburg en Afrique du Nord et de l’Ouest.

Son travail est guidé par une conviction profonde : personne n’est libre tant que nous ne le sommes pas toustes. Son activisme est à la fois un combat et une lettre d’amour à son peuple, à ses communautés et au monde que nous méritons.

Amal was a prominent politician and parliamentarian in Libya. She was a faculty member at Benghazi University from 1995 until her death in 2017.

Amal was a civil society activist and a member of various social and political initiatives. She assisted the families of martyrs and the  disappeared, and was a founding member of a youth initiative called ‘’Youth of Benghazi Libya”. In the 2014 parliamentary elections, Amal was elected to the House of Representatives with more than 14,000 votes (the highest number of votes anyone received in the 2014 elections).

Amal will remain in the memories of many as a woman politician working to ensure a better future in one the most difficult and conflict-ridden contexts in the region.

Te invitamos a crear conjuntamente con nosotrxs espacios libres de acoso y violencia, donde todas las personas sean respetadas en su identidad y expresión de género, raza, capacidad, clase, religión, idioma, etnia, edad, ocupación, tipo de educación, sexualidad, tamaño corporal y apariencia física. Espacios donde reconozcamos las desigualdades que prevalecen en nuestro mundo, y nos esforcemos por transformarlas.

Queremos crear un espacio donde:

  •  podamos estar “presentes”:

Esto significa escucharnos, comprendernos y vincularnos. Sentirnos cerca, a pesar de la virtualidad. Para eso, contaremos con interpretación y abriremos canales (como el chat y otras herramientas) para reaccionar y compartir. Para lograr escucharnos mejor, les invitamos a utilizar audífonos o auriculares durante la sesión. Si puedes hacerlo, te sugerimos cerrar tus correos electrónicos y cualquier otra posible distracción mientras estás en la conversación. 

  • todas las formas de conocimiento son valoradas:

Celebremos los distintos saberes y  las múltiples formas en que estos se expresan. Seremos proactivxs, pero también te pedimos que nos comuniques tus necesidades, para que, dentro de nuestras posibilidades, nos ocupemos de satisfacerlas.

Asumimos compromisos individuales y colectivos de respetar la privacidad y contar con el consentimiento de otrxs para difundir imágenes o contenido generado durante la conversación. 

Crear un ambiente más seguro, respetuoso y disfrutable para las conversaciones es responsabilidad de todxs.

Cómo reportar

Si notas que alguien se está comportando de forma discriminatoria u ofensiva, por favor, contacta a la persona de referencia que se indicará al comienzo de la sesión.
 
Cualquier participante que se exprese con lenguaje opresivo o imágenes ofensivas será eliminadx de la videoconferencia y no será admitidx nuevamente. No interactuaremos con esa persona de ninguna manera.

Rocky mostró un liderazgo y una dirección inspiradoras en su trabajo con jóvenes lesbianas, gays, bisexuales, transgénero, intersex, queer, y personas transgénero indígenas de Australia (LGBTIQBBSG) en riesgo.

Rocky comenzó su carrera con el Servicio de Policía de Queensland como Oficial de Policía de Enlace. Para ella, hacer una diferencia era algo importante. Desarrolló una carrera impresionante trabajando con jóvenes LGBTIQBBSG como Gerente del Servicio Juvenil de Puertas Abiertas.

Rocky trabajó con lxs beneficiarixs en situaciones complejas, específicamente relacionadas con la identidad sexual y de género. Esta línea de trabajo le resultaba propia: era una líder comunitaria fuerte, una triunfadora discreta, una amiga leal, una persona que apoyaba compasivamente a lxs demás, alguien que producía el cambio. Rocky fue una de lxs fundadorxs de IndigiLez Leadership y de Support Groes.

En 2016, en la Corte Suprema de Brisbane, Michael Kirby, ex juez del Tribunal Supremo de Apelaciones, mencionó por su nombre a Rocky al elogiar el trabajo que el Servicio Legal LGBTI había desarrollado a lo largo de los años. Rocky luchó de forma extraordinariamente tenaz por los derechos humanos de la comunidad LGBTIQBBSG, corrió los límites y produjo cambios de una forma respetuosa y amorosa.

Anti-Rights Tactics, Strategies, and Impacts

Chapter 5

Anti-rights actors adopt a double strategy. As well as launching outright attacks on the multilateral system, anti-rights actors also undermine human rights from within. Anti-rights actors engage with the aim of co-opting processes, entrenching regressive norms, and undermining accountability.

Anti-rights actors’ engagement in international human rights spaces has a principal purpose: to undermine the system and its ability to respect, protect and fulfill human rights for all people, and to hold member states accountable for violations. Some anti-rights tactics operate from outside the UN and include delegitimization and political pressure to defund the UN, or to withdraw from international human rights agreements.  In recent years, anti-rights actors have also gained increasing influence inside the UN. Their inside tactics include training of delegates, distortion of human rights frameworks, watering down human rights agreements, infiltrating NGO committees, applying for ECOSOC status under neutral names, infiltrating youth spaces, and lobbying to place anti-rights actors in key positions.
