In September 2016, the 13th AWID international Forum brought together in Brazil over 1800 feminists and women’s rights advocates in a spirit of resistance and resilience.
This section highlights the gains, learnings and resources that came out of our rich conversations. We invite you to explore, share and comment!
What has happened since 2016?
One of the key takeaways from the 2016 Forum was the need to broaden and deepen our cross-movement work to address rising fascisms, fundamentalisms, corporate greed and climate change.
With this in mind, we have been working with multiple allies to grow these seeds of resistance:
- Our Seed Initiatives, has helped 20 ideas that emerged at the Forum to grow into concrete actions
- The video “Defending people and planet” and guide “Weaving resistance through action” put courageous WHRDs in the spotlight and present concrete strategies they use to confront corporate power.
- With our animations about the State of Our Feminist Movements and Climate and Environmental Justice, movements now have creative tools to support their advocacy work.
- The compiling artistic expressions of our #MovementsMatter series continues to inspire stronger and more creative organizing around the world.
- Movements can also benefit from new methodologies on Visioning Feminist Futures (Coming up soon!)
And through our next strategic plan and Forum process, we are committed to keep developing ideas and deepen the learnings ignited at the 2016 Forum.
What happens now?
The world is a much different place than it was a year ago, and it will continue to change.
The next AWID Forum will take place in the Asia Pacific region (exact location and dates to be announced in 2018).

About the AWID Forum
AWID Forums started in 1983, in Washington DC. Since then, the event has grown to become many things to many peoples: an iterative process of sharpening our analyses, vision and actions; a watershed moment that reinvigorates participants’ feminisms and energizes their organizing; and a political home for women human rights defenders to find sanctuary and solidarity.

Marielle Franco
Marielle fue una política brasileña feminista lesbiana y activista por los derechos humanos.
Criticó abiertamente la brutalidad policial y las ejecuciones extrajudiciales. Su política declaradamente feminista, negra, centrada en las favelas, fue una fuente de esperanza para los grupos marginados de Río de Janeiro, gobernados actualmente por un gobierno municipal conservador y un intendente evangélico.

Valerie Awino Opiyo
Biography
Valerie has eight years of expertise in the areas of communications development, digital advocacy, and social research. Her responsibilities at AWID include orchestrating an innovative, engaging, and successful Forum Hybrid experience, which is a new component of the 15th AWID International Forum. Prior to joining AWID, she worked at Women Deliver as the Advisor Global Dialogue and Regional Convening Focal. Valerie has keen interest in digital and hybrid events, some of the global events she has brought to fruition are: Global Youth Summit, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (Global Congress) and Plan International Deutschland (JF-CPiE Project Launch). Valerie is also the author of the book, Relationship Literacy: Wider lessons from young single mothers in Nairobi slums. A publication that seeks to amplify the voices and lived experiences of young single mothers. She holds a Master of Arts Degree in Project Planning and Management from the University of Nairobi and Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Communication from Catholic University of Eastern Africa. She is currently based in the lake region of Western Kenya (Kisumu). She loves to read African literature, visit art galleries, and explore different cultures through food.

Will there be any support for materials or other preparatory costs for workshops?
You can expect all the standard materials for workshops and presentations: flip charts, markers, sticky notes, in addition to projectors and audio-visual equipment. Any additional materials are the responsibility of the activity organizers. AWID’s logistics team will be available to answer questions and advise.

Razan était une infirmière palestinienne bénévole âgée de 21 ans.
Elle a été tuée par balle à l'est de la ville de Khan Younis, au sud de Gaza, alors qu'elle courait vers une clôture de la frontière fortifiée dans le but de porter secours à une victime.
Dans son tout dernier post sur Facebook, Razan avait déclaré : « J’y retourne et ne reculerai pas », ajoutant: « Frappez-moi de vos balles. Je n'ai pas peur ».

Biography
Nana es una organizadora feminista e investigadora en derechos reproductivos y políticas demográficas que reside en Egipto. Es miembro de RESURJ (organización feminista por la justicia sexual y reproductiva), del Órgano Asesor del Proyecto A del Líbano y de la Comisión de la Comunidad de Mama Cash. Nana tiene una maestría en Salud Pública del Instituto KIT y la Universidad Vrije de Ámsterdam. En su trabajo, da seguimiento y contextualiza las políticas demográficas nacionales, al tiempo que reúne información para abordar la eugenesia moderna, las ayudas internacionales de carácter regresivo y el autoritarismo. Anteriormente, formó parte de la Fundación de Ginebra para la Educación y la Investigación Médica, la Iniciativa Egipcia para los Derechos Personales y el Colectivo Feminista Ikhtyar de El Cairo.

Jacqueline Coulibaly Ki-Zerbo
Jacqueline was a pioneering Malian/Burkinabe feminist, nationalist and educator.
She taught English in Senegal, before being recruited in 1961 as an English teacher at the Lycée Philippe Zinda Kaboré in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Through her activism, she was involved in the popular uprising of January 3, 1966. Between 1961 and 1966, Jacqueline was also responsible for the trade union press, Voices of the Teachers. She was appointed as the head of the Normal Course for Young Girls (now known as Nelson Mandela High School) until 1974, and dedicated herself to girls’ education and advancing women’s rights.
In 1984 she was awarded the Paul G. Hoffmann Award for outstanding work in national and international development.

Lara fue una muy conocida y querida DJ de radio en la FM Motsweding, en Sudáfrica.
Fue una de las primeras conductoras abiertamente transgénero en una estación de radio comercial. Trabajó mucho para echar luz sobre los temas LGTBI.
El activismo de Lara comenzó a temprana edad, cuando defendía vivamente su derecho a vestirse y comportarse de una forma que le resultara cómoda y lo hacía frente a integrantes de su comunidad que todavía no entendían qué significaba ser transgénero.
