Protection of the Family
The Issue
Over the past few years, a troubling new trend at the international human rights level is being observed, where discourses on ‘protecting the family’ are being employed to defend violations committed against family members, to bolster and justify impunity, and to restrict equal rights within and to family life.
The campaign to "Protect the Family" is driven by ultra-conservative efforts to impose "traditional" and patriarchal interpretations of the family, and to move rights out of the hands of family members and into the institution of ‘the family’.
“Protection of the Family” efforts stem from:
- rising traditionalism,
- rising cultural, social and religious conservatism and
- sentiment hostile to women’s human rights, sexual rights, child rights and the rights of persons with non-normative gender identities and sexual orientations.
Since 2014, a group of states have been operating as a bloc in human rights spaces under the name “Group of Friends of the Family”, and resolutions on “Protection of the Family” have been successfully passed every year since 2014.
This agenda has spread beyond the Human Rights Council. We have seen regressive language on “the family” being introduced at the Commission on the Status of Women, and attempts made to introduce it in negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our Approach
AWID works with partners and allies to jointly resist “Protection of the Family” and other regressive agendas, and to uphold the universality of human rights.
In response to the increased influence of regressive actors in human rights spaces, AWID joined allies to form the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). OURs is a collaborative project that monitors, analyzes, and shares information on anti-rights initiatives like “Protection of the Family”.
Rights at Risk, the first OURs report, charts a map of the actors making up the global anti-rights lobby, identifies their key discourses and strategies, and the effect they are having on our human rights.
The report outlines “Protection of the Family” as an agenda that has fostered collaboration across a broad range of regressive actors at the UN. It describes it as: “a strategic framework that houses “multiple patriarchal and anti-rights positions, where the framework, in turn, aims to justify and institutionalize these positions.”

2014: comienza el proceso preparatorio para la 3a Conferencia Internacional sobre FpD
Octubre de 2014: Inicio del proceso preparatorio intergubernamental para la tercera Conferencia Internacional sobre la Financiación para el Desarrollo
- Se dio inicio a un proceso preparatorio facilitado por el embajador George Wilfred Talbot, de Guyana, y el embajador Geir O. Pedersen, de Noruega, destinado a encaminar las discusiones con miras a la tercera Conferencia Internacional sobre la FpD, que tendrá lugar en Adís Abeba, Etiopía, en julio de 2015.
- Como parte de esos preparativos se realizaron dos rondas de sesiones informales sustantivas en la sede de la ONU en Nueva York, que aportaron insumos para las sesiones de redacción del Documento Final de la Conferencia.
- El WWG se reactivó, con el objetivo de incorporar las perspectivas feministas y de derechos de las mujeres a esas discusiones y deliberaciones, antes y durante la tercera Conferencia Internacional sobre la FpD. AWID, Mujeres por el Desarrollo Alternativo para una Nueva Era (DAWN) y el Feminist Task Force [Grupo de Trabajo Feminista, FTF en inglés] están coordinando el Grupo en conjunto.
- El WWG tuvo dos intervenciones orales durante la primera ronda y aportó comentarios escritos a la segunda ronda de sesiones sustantivas informales. En todos los casos enfatizó que la desigualdad de género estaba siendo invisibilizada, al igual que otras formas de discriminación y de desigualdad. También subrayó las relaciones de poder entre los géneros y sus intersecciones con otras categorías como raza, discapacidad, etnia, edad, riqueza e identidad sexual, que apuntalan la distribución desigual de oportunidades y recursos en sociedades de todo el mundo.
- Las organizaciones de la sociedad civil plantearon sus preocupaciones acerca del espacio para su participación en las dos sesiones sustantivas informales y señalaron el riesgo de que se restringiera el espacio de la sociedad civil para intervenir en las negociaciones sobre el Documento Final de la tercera Conferencia Internacional en enero de 2015.
Ursula K Le Guin
Ursula was an American novelist who worked mainly in the genres of fantasy and science fiction.
She found fame with The Left Hand Of Darkness, which imagines a future society where people are ambisexual – they have no fixed sex. It explores the effects of gender and sex in society, and was one of the first major feminist science fiction books. Ursula was inspiring in her subversive and original writing, and also for the themes of feminism and freedom she held so dearly.
In a 1983 address at Mills College in California, she told graduates: “Why should a free woman with a college education either fight Macho-man or serve him? Why should she live her life on his terms? I hope you live without the need to dominate, and without the need to be dominated.”

Tenue des autres sessions de rédaction du document final d’Addis-Abeba
- Du 1er au 5 juin 2015, d'autres sessions complémentaires ont été organisées pour poursuivre le travail d’amélioration du document final.
- La troisième session de rédaction du document final prévue dans le processus de la conférence s’est tenue du 15 au 19 juin, au siège de l’ONU.

Liliana fue una maestra argentina, una tejedora y una escritora muy reconocida.
Su trilogía La saga de los confines recibió varios premios y es única en el género fantástico por su uso y reimaginación de la mitología de los pueblos indígenas de América del Sur.
El compromiso de Liliana con el feminismo se expresaba en las diversas, ricas y fuertes voces de mujeres en su escritura y especialmente en su extensa obra para lectorxs jóvenes. También tomó posición públicamente en favor del aborto, la justicia económica y la equidad de género.

Elles et ils nous ont également dit ce que nous devrions conserver et renforcer pour les prochains Forums, ce qui distingue les Forums de l’AWID, et ce que nous pouvons améliorer.
Ce rapport contient des enseignements et d’inestimables conseils pour toute personne prévoyant d’organiser des rassemblements régionaux et thématiques en personne, et pour nous-mêmes alors que nous planifions le 15e Forum international de l’AWID.

We understand Feminist Realities as the different ways of existing and being that show us what is possible, despite dominant power systems, and in defiance and resistance to them. We understand these feminist realities as reclamations and embodiments of hope and power, and as multi-dimentional, dynamic and rooted in specific contexts and historical moments.

Anna Campbell (şehid Hêlîn Qerecox)
Anna a grandi à Lewes, dans le Sussex (Royaume-Uni). Après avoir décidé de ne pas poursuivre sa licence d’anglais à l'Université de Sheffield, elle a déménagé à Bristol et est devenue plombière.
Elle a passé une grande partie de son temps à défendre les personnes marginalisées et défavorisées, à assister à des rassemblements antifascistes et à offrir son soutien aux femmes de la Dale Farm lorsqu'elles furent menacées d'expulsion. Végétalienne et amie des animaux, elle a participé à des missions de sabotage de chasses et son nom est honoré sur le monument commémoratif « Arbre de vie » de l’organisation PETA. Anna s'est rendue à Rojava en mai 2017 pour lutter en faveur du renforcement du pouvoir des femmes, de la pleine représentation de toutes les ethnies et de la protection de l'environnement.
Anna est décédée le 15 mars 2018, après avoir été atteinte par une frappe aérienne turque dans la ville d'Afrin, dans le nord de la Syrie. Anna se battait auprès des forces de protection des femmes (YPJ) quand elle a été tuée.
