As we witness the unfolding threat to humanity in Afghanistan, we call out international complicity and express our deepest and strongest solidarity with Afghan feminists.

Today’s reality in Afghanistan is the result of an ongoing historical cycle of violence by foreign military powers, imperialist interests and corporate greed. From Russia’s bloody occupation, to Pakistan’s continuous support for the Taliban, the US invasion and the last two decades of US intervention that has killed thousands of civilians in military operations and left a stronger Taliban. 

From police violence to Boko Haram, AWIDer Hakima Abbas says fundamentalism must be addressed globally.

In Nigeria, hundreds of bodies have been found in the northeastern town of Damasak, after an apparent massacre by the militant group Boko Haram. Local sources say the death toll exceeds 400. 

The prominent Syrian human rights defenders Razan Zaitouneh, Samira Al-Khalil, Wa’el Hamada and Nazim Hammadi, who remain missing three years after armed men abducted them, should be released immediately, 56 human rights organizations said today, on the anniversary of their abduction.

Launched last March in Turkish Kurdistan, the World March of Women Feminist Caravan across Europe will end on 17 October in Portugal, on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and the official closing of the 4th international action of the World March of Women. As we commemorated International Day of Peace on 21st September and a call for a global ceasefire, AWID takes a look at the situation of women human rights defenders in Turkeys increasing conflict.

On 20 July 2015, the international community was shaken by the news of the murder of 31 civil society activists, many of whom were women human rights defenders (WHRDs) in the predominantly Kurdish city of Suruç in Turkey. The activists were on their way to rebuild the war torn Kurdish city of Kobane in Northern Syria, carrying toys and books for orphaned children.  

Following the signing of the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali on 20 June 2015, AWID spoke with Bintou Founé Samaké Bouaré and Fatoumata Maiga to learn more about mainstreaming gender into the Mali peace building process and the associated challenges.
