Young Feminist Activism

Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat

Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.

At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.

A multigenerational approach

AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.

Our Actions

We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

  • Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

  • Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

  • Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

  • Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

  • Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Changements sismiques : une année d'achèvement, de transition et de réflexion | rapport annuel 2017

Ces cinq dernières années, ont été particulièrement significatives pour l’AWID.

Nous avons contribué à d'importantes victoires, telles que l'élargissement du paysage du financement des droits des femmes grâce à des travaux de recherche et de plaidoyer novateurs de grande envergure. En même temps, nous avons connu des revers dévastateurs, notamment les assassinats de femmes défenseures des droits humains telles que Berta Caceres au Honduras, Gauri Lankesh en Inde et Marielle Franco au Brésil, ainsi que la montée de la mobilisation anti-droits dans les espaces voués aux droits humains.

Il y a cinq ans, nous nous sommes engagées à renforcer notre mouvement en produisant des savoirs sur les tendances des mouvements anti-droits, ainsi que sur des questions avec lesquelles les féministes s'engagent plus rarement, tels les flux financiers illicites. Nous avons mené des plaidoyers côte à côte avec nos partenaires du mouvement, renforçant ainsi l'activisme intergénérationnel et celui des jeunes féministes et élargissant la protection globale des défenseuses des droits humains. Arrivées au terme de notre plan stratégique, nous sommes fières de nos réalisations et de notre évolution en tant qu’organisation. Nous terminons l'année 2017 avec un engagement, des idées et un apprentissage renouvelés pour poursuivre la lutte à venir !

Meet Clemencia Carabalí Rodallega, an extraordinary Afro-Colombian feminist.

She has worked relentlessly for three decades towards the safeguarding of human rights, women’s rights and peace-building in conflict areas on the Pacific Coast of Colombia.

Clemencia has made significant contributions to the fight for truth, reparations and justice for the victims of Colombia’s civil war. She received the National Award for the Defense of Human Rights in 2019, and also participated in the campaign of newly elected Afro-Colombian and long-time friend, vice-president Francia Marquez.

Although Clemencia has faced and continues to face many hardships, including threats and assassination attempts, she continues to fight for the rights of Afro-Colombian women and communities across the country.

Biography

Ritu es una tecnóloga feminista que aporta su experiencia en el sector sin fines de lucro, movida por la pasión de utilizar enfoques innovadores para encontrar soluciones tecnológicas en clave feminista. Con una maestría en Tecnología de las Aplicaciones Informáticas del Instituto de Tecnología de la India, su función en AWID abarca una diversidad de responsabilidades. Desde la supervisión de la seguridad digital y la gestión de servidores, hasta la administración de las bases de datos, pasando por el desarrollo de capacidades, la evaluación de tecnologías, la implementación de software y soluciones en la nube, Ritu vela por la resiliencia y la efectividad de la infraestructura de las tecnologías de la información de AWID. Antes de incorporarse a AWID, desempeñó un papel fundamental en la promoción de iniciativas tecnológicas en los sectores del medio ambiente y de la promoción de la salud, impulsada por su afán de aprovechar la tecnología en aras del bien social.

Feminist, women’s rights, gender justice, LBTQI+ and allied movements around the world are at a critical juncture, facing a powerful backlash on previously-won rights and freedoms.
