Memory as Resistance: A Tribute to WHRDs no longer with us
AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us.
In 2020, we are taking a turn
This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.
49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.
This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.
The stories of activists we honour keep their legacy alive and carry their inspiration forward into our movements’ future work.
The portraits of the 2020 edition are designed by award winning illustrator and animator, Louisa Bertman.
AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these activists and WHRDs and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

The Tribute was first launched in 2012
It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.
To date, 467 feminists and WHRDs are featured.

Juana Ramírez Santiago
Ayant co-fondé le réseau Red de Mujeres Ixiles de Nebaj, une organisation de défense des droits des femmes autochtones, membre de l’Initiative mésoaméricaine des femmes défenseur-e-s des droits humains (IM-Defensoras en espagnol), Juana était actuellement membre de son conseil d’administration.
Elle était également sage-femme et mère de 7 enfants. Juana avait reçu des menaces de mort qui avaient été signalées au bureau du procureur. Juana est la troisième défenseure autochtone assassinée dans la région en 2018. L'Ombudsman pour le Guatemala a signalé qu'au total 20 défenseur-e-s ont été tué-e-s dans le pays cette année.
Juana Ramírez Santiago a été abattue par des assaillants non identifiés alors qu'elle traversait un pont à Nebak, Quiché, au Guatemala. Les enquêtes visant à identifier les auteurs sont en cours.
What is the 14th AWID Forum theme?
The 14th Forum theme is “Feminist Realities: our power in action”.
We understand Feminist Realities as the different ways of existing and being that show us what is possible, despite dominant power systems, and in defiance and resistance to them. We understand these feminist realities as reclamations and embodiments of hope and power, and as multi-dimentional, dynamic and rooted in specific contexts and historical moments.

SYNDICAT RÉSEAU SOLIDARITÉ
Nous vous présentons le syndicat Réseau Solidarité, un syndicat de la santé et des services dirigé majoritairement par des femmes. Émergeant en réponse à la précarité croissante, aux salaires insuffisants et aux environnements de travail hostiles auxquels les travailleur·euses géorgien·es sont confrontés quotidiennement, le Syndicat Réseau Solidarité se bat pour des lieux et des conditions de travail décents.
Son objectif? Créer un mouvement syndical national démocratique. Pour ce faire, il s'est associé à d'autres syndicats locaux et régionaux et a lentement constitué un réseau de syndicats, permettant à de plus en plus de travailleuses de devenir dirigeantes syndicales en cours de route.
Son approche politique est holistique. Pour le syndicat Réseau Solidarité, les questions relatives aux droits du travail sont directement liées aux programmes et réformes politiques et économiques nationaux plus larges. C'est pourquoi iels font pression pour la justice fiscale, les droits des femmes et des personnes LGBTQIA+, et luttent contre le démantèlement de l'État-providence géorgien.
Le syndicat Réseau Solidarité fait également partie de Grève Sociale Transnationale (Transnational Social Strike, TSS), une plate-forme et infrastructure politique inspirée par l'organisation des migrant·e·s, des femmes et des travailleur·euses essentiel·les qui s'efforcent de créer des liens entre les mouvements ouvriers à travers le monde et de fomenter la solidarité globale.

Diakite Fatoumata Sire
Diakite was actively involved in advocating for women in political and public life in Mali.
She worked to support training of women candidates in elections, and spoke out against the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). She was a strong proponent of reproductive health and rights.
What will be different about this Forum?
We have always worked towards ensuring that our Forums are co-developed with partners, movements and our priority constituencies.
For our upcoming Forum, we aim to deepen and strengthen that spirit and practice of co-creation and collaboration. We also recognize the need to improve the balance between the inclusion of many voices and experiences with room for participants and staff to breathe, take pause and enjoy some downtime.
This Forum will be different in the following ways:
- We will have far less organized Forum activities because we want people to have time to engage, experience, process, talk to each other, etc. This is key to communicate: you can come to the Forum, be very engaged and active and not facilitate any organized activity (or “session”).
- We will have Open Spaces - at least one whole afternoon without any organized activities - but also physical spaces available throughout the Forum for people to self-organize meetings, etc.
- We have a Content and Methodology Committee made up of feminists from different regions with expertise on participatory methodologies to support us and all those leading activities at the Forum to use creative and engaging formats for the Forum activities.

Andaiye
Andaiye in Swahili means ‘a daughter comes home’. Born Sandra Williams on 11 September 1942 in Georgetown, Guyana, she changed her name to ‘Andaiye’ in 1970 as the Black Power movements swept her country and the wider Caribbean region.
Andaiye was seen as a transformative figure on the frontlines of the struggles for liberation and freedom. She was an early member and active in the leadership of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), a socialist party in Guyana which fought against authoritarian rule and continued throughout her life to focus on justice for the working-class and rural women’s rights and on bridging ethnic barriers between Indo and Afro-Guyanese women.
Andaiye was a founding member of Red Thread Women, an organization that advocated for women’s care work to be fairly remunerated, worked at the University of the West Indies and with CARICOM. Never afraid to challenge governments, she pointed out gender imbalances in state boards, laws that discriminated against sex workers, called for abortion rights in Jamaica and spoke out against trade agreements such as the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME) that allowed for the free movement of women domestic migrant workers but did not give their children the same rights.
Andaiye published several scholarly essays, wrote newspaper columns and also edited the last books of Walter Rodney, the Guyanese political activist and fellow WPA leader, who was assassinated in 1980. A cancer survivor, Andaiye was one of the founders of the Guyana Cancer Society and the Cancer Survivors’ Action Group. She also served on the executive of the Caribbean Association for Feminist Research and Action (CAFRA), as a Director of Help and Shelter and as Board Member of the Guyana National Commission on Women. She received a number of awards, including the Golden Arrow of Achievement in Guyana (the fourth highest national award).
Andaiye passed away on 31 May 2019 at the age of 77. The subsequent tributes that flowed in from activists, friends and those inspired by her life spoke eloquently to her amazing legacy and her beautiful humanity.

Desarrollamos nuestro trabajo a través de estas tácticas:
Influencia, incidencia y campañas
Hacemos uso colaborativo de nuestro acceso, poder, recursos y relaciones para influir estratégicamente sobre las políticas y las prácticas. Nos proponemos impulsar agendas feministas a través de nuestro trabajo con quienes tienen poder de decisión política, con financiadoras y con activistas en los espacios regionales y mundiales. Para reforzar nuestro poder e influencia colectivos, también procuramos influir sobre los movimientos feministas y de derechos de las mujeres para que pongan en lugar central a los movimientos históricamente oprimidos.
Convocatoria y conexiones
Utilizamos nuestro poder de convocatoria para facilitar el diálogo y pensar estrategias sobre temas clave. Conectamos a nuestra membresía y aliadxs entre sí, para que compartan e intercambien recursos, ideas y acciones sobre temas relevantes. Organizamos y facilitamos espacios en los que participan y se fortalecen diversos movimientos, espacios para imaginar y concebir nuevos futuros, para desarrollar tácticas de influencia efectivas y para crear juntxs agendas y procesos transformadores.
Solidaridad y construcción de puentes
Trabajamos para movilizar a nuestra membresía y a los movimientos que apoyamos para fortalecer la acción colectiva en solidaridad con causas feministas y con lxs defensorxs que están en peligro. Construimos colaboraciones de largo plazo, nos comprometemos en la escucha activa y la solidaridad continua. Trabajamos con defensorxs para construir conocimiento, redes de apoyo y solidaridad para la protección y el bienestar.
Arte y expresión creativa
Reconocemos el valor único y estratégico de las iniciativas culturales y creativas en la lucha contra la opresión y la injusticia. Trabajamos con artistas que le dan un lugar central a las voces feministas y a las narrativas de la comunidades históricamente oprimidas. En esta táctica emergente, vemos al arte y la expresión creativa como algo que nos ayuda a concebir un mundo donde las realidades feministas siguen floreciendo y sigan siendo celebradas.
Nuestras iniciativas
Nuestras iniciativas trabajan en las intersecciones de escenarios de cambio que buscamos abordar, de los movimientos que priorizamos y de las tácticas que usamos:
Promoción de los derechos universales y la justicia
Monitoreamos, documentamos y hacemos visible cómo están operando y aglutinándose lxs actorxs anti-derechos en los espacios multilaterales y apoyamos a los movimientos feministas, de derechos de las mujeres y por la justicia de género y sus aliadxs para contrarrestar esa influencia e impacto.
Construcción de economías feministas
Desde perspectivas como el extractivismo, la justicia impositiva y la rendición de cuentas corporativa, construimos conocimiento sobre el poder corporativo y su influencia; abogamos por que las empresas asuman sus responsabilidad así como por la distribución equitativa de la riqueza, y amplificamos las propuestas feministas para lograr economías justas.
Financiamiento de los movimientos feministas
Desarrollamos análisis accesibles y orientados a la acción acerca del estado del financiamiento para los movimientos feministas. Nos proponemos influir sobre las políticas y prácticas de las financiadoras, incrementar y sostener el financiamiento para el cambio social feminista, y apoyar las necesidades y estrategias de los movimientos.
Además del impacto que pretendemos tener en el mundo, AWID está expresamente comprometida con el fortalecimiento de nuestro propio aprendizaje y resiliencia organizacionales, para poder fortalecer mejor a los movimientos feministas del mundo.
