Memory as Resistance: A Tribute to WHRDs no longer with us

AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us. 

In 2020, we are taking a turn

This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.

49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.

This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.

The stories of activists we honour keep their legacy alive and carry their inspiration forward into our movements’ future work.

The portraits of the 2020 edition are designed by award winning illustrator and animator, Louisa Bertman. 

AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these activists and WHRDs and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

The Tribute was first launched in 2012

It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.

To date, 467 feminists and WHRDs are featured.

Ȃurea Mouzinho

Biography

Ȃurea Mouzinho is a feminist economic justice organizer and advocate from Luanda, Angola. Rooted by a pan-African, socialist and decolonial feminist politics and practice, in 2016 she co-founded and has since been a co-coordinator of Ondjango Feminista, a feminist collective working to advance a transformative women’s rights and gender justice agenda in Angola through consciousness-raising, mobilisation and advocacy. Her 10-year work history encompasses roles in research, project-management, grant-making, advocacy and movement-building primarily on issues at the intersection of women's rights, economic policies and social justice. She has written on the history and challenges for women's organising in Angola, the interplay between extractivism, militarisation and violence against women in Mozambique, and the contemporary economic liberatory practices of African peoples worldwide. Currently, Ȃurea works as policy advocacy and campaigns coordinator at the Global Alliance for Tax Justice (GATJ), leading the alliance's work on tax and gender. Ȃurea is a strategic advisor for Eyala, an alumni and regular contributor to FEMNET's African Feminist Macroeconomics Academy (AFMA) and has previously served as advisor for Sub-Saharan Africa for FRIDA-The Young Feminist Fund. She is trained in economics (University of Cape Town, Monash University) and has a Masters in Development Studies from SOAS, University of London.

Ȃurea has a loud laugh, is a proud house-plant caretaker, and enjoys strolling the beaches of the Angolan Atlantic coast followed by slow evenings laying on her carpet. She occasionally tweets on @kitondowe.

Killed

Mariam was a paralegal at the Kawagib Moro Human Rights Alliance. 

Mariam was a staunch critic of militarization in Moro communities, and consistently denounced aerial bombardment and encampment. She had to seek sanctuary after exposing and calling out the injustices committed against Muslim communities in the Philippines.

She is believed to have been killed by suspected military agents because of her work as a WHRD. The assailants who killed Mariam waited for her, caught up with the vehicle she was using and shot her seven times.

Resourcing feminist movements is fundamental to securing a more just and peaceful present and liberated future.

While funders committed significantly more money to gender equality over the last decade, still only 1% of philanthropic and development funding has actually been moved to directly resource feminist-led social change. 

In solidarity with movements that continue to be invisibilized, marginalized and without access to core, long-term, flexible and trust-based funding, the WITM survey highlights the actual state of resourcing, challenges false solutions, and points to how funding models must change for movements to thrive and meet the complex challenges of our times.

Tshegofatso Senne es une trabajadore comunitarie y sangoma queer no binarie negre con una enfermedad crónica que da lo máximo de sí. Es une coleccionista aficionade actualmente obsesionade con la cerámica y es papá de Donkey y Ginji, sus gatos. En su plataforma comunitaria Hedone, reúne gente para analizar y comprender el poder de la toma de conciencia del trauma y el placer en la vida cotidiana. Si bien gran parte de su trabajo se basa en las comunicaciones, la facilitación y la sanación, disfruta mucho de trabajar con jóvenes de todo el continente, organiza talleres, y se desempeña como mentore en cuestiones de placer y liberación, para lo que se vale de la creatividad y la narración como soluciones fractales a las injusticias sociales. Su conferencia en TEDx «Reimagining BDSM» (Reimaginar el BDSM, conjunto de prácticas eróticas) habla de la ternura y el amor que afloran en un estilo de vida, que, a menudo, se mira desde un prisma extremo. Tshegofatso cree profundamente en el potencial individual y colectivo del cambio regenerativo y sostenible, el placer y el trabajo de los cuidados.

Snippet FEA Clemencia (EN)

Meet Clemencia Carabalí Rodallega, an extraordinary Afro-Colombian feminist.

She has worked relentlessly for three decades towards the safeguarding of human rights, women’s rights and peace-building in conflict areas on the Pacific Coast of Colombia.

Clemencia has made significant contributions to the fight for truth, reparations and justice for the victims of Colombia’s civil war. She received the National Award for the Defense of Human Rights in 2019, and also participated in the campaign of newly elected Afro-Colombian and long-time friend, vice-president Francia Marquez.

Although Clemencia has faced and continues to face many hardships, including threats and assassination attempts, she continues to fight for the rights of Afro-Colombian women and communities across the country.

Accidente

Florence fue una activista por los derechos de las personas con discapacidad que trabajó con varias organizaciones de mujeres con discapacidad en Uganda.

También ocupó la Dirección del Distrito de Lira de la Asociación de Mujeres con Discapacidad, así como del foro de Consejeras Mujeres del Distrito de Lira. Formada como consejera para personas con discapacidad y para madres y padres de niñxs con discapacidad, apoyó muchos proyectos que reclamaban mayor representación de las personas con discapacidad.

Murió en un accidente de motocicleta.

Valerie Awino Opiyo

Biography

Valérie possède huit années d'expertise en matière de développement des communications, de plaidoyer digital et de recherche sociale. Ses responsabilités au sein de l'AWID comprennent l'orchestration d'une expérience de Forum hybride innovante, engageante et réussie, en tant que nouvelle composante du 15e Forum international de l'AWID. Avant de rejoindre l'AWID, elle a travaillé chez Women Deliver en tant que conseillère pour le dialogue mondial et coordonnatrice régionale. Valérie s'intéresse vivement aux événements digitaux et hybrides. Parmi certains événements mondiaux qu'elle a menés à bien, on trouve : le Sommet mondial de la jeunesse, la Ligue internationale des femmes pour la paix et la liberté (Congrès mondial) et Plan International Allemagne (lancement du projet JF-CPiE). Valérie est également l'auteure du livre ‘Relationship Literacy: Wider leçons from young single mothers in Nairobi slums’ (Alphabétisation relationnelle : leçons plus larges tirées de jeunes mères célibataires dans les bidonvilles de Nairobi). Cette publication cherche à amplifier les voix et les expériences vécues des jeunes mères célibataires. Valerie est titulaire d'un master en planification et gestion de projets de l'Université de Nairobi et d'une licence en communication sociale de l'Université catholique d'Afrique de l'Est. Elle est actuellement basée dans la région des lacs de l'ouest du Kenya (Kisumu). Elle adore lire la littérature africaine, visiter des galeries d'art et explorer différentes cultures à travers la nourriture.

Nadine Ramaroson

Accident

Son soutien aux femmes et aux personnes les plus vulnérables de sa communauté a fait que Nadine était un modèle pour beaucoup. Elle était déterminée à aider les pauvres et les sans-abri en particulier.

Bien que sa mort ait été déclarée comme étant accidentelle, la famille Ramaroson, sur l’initiative de son père André Ramaroson, a mené une enquête qui a mis en évidence des preuves de son assassinat. Elle serait décédée dans un accident mortel survenu entre Soanierano - Ivongo et Ste Marie - une histoire qui a été réfutée par sa famille. Elle avait reçu de nombreuses menaces de mort pour ses positions politiques résolues. L’affaire est toujours en cours auprès des tribunaux à Antananarivo (la capitale de Madagascar).

« J’ai constaté la discrimination dans la rue, que ce soit par des taquineries ou des agressions verbales qui y ont lieu. Je me suis aussi faite plein d’ami·e·s et j’y ai rencontré plusieurs personnes. Il se peut que ce soit dangereux là-bas, mais je suis une survivante, et pour le moment, c’est là où je suis. » -  Sainimili Naival

Sainimili Naivalu était une activiste féministe des droits des personnes handicapées issue du village de Dakuibeqa, sur l’île de Beqa aux Fidji.

Elle a demandé aux responsables et acteurs politiques de fournir des politiques et des services adaptés au handicap, comme la construction de rampes dans les villes et les villages afin d'accroître leur accessibilité. Les barrières physiques n’étaient pas les seules qu’elle aspirait à modifier. Sur la base de sa propre expérience, elle savait que des changements plus difficiles devaient être menés dans les sphères économiques et sociales. Bon nombre des défis avec lesquels sont aux prises les personnes handicapées trouvent leurs racines dans les attitudes discriminantes et stigmatisantes. 

Survivante et combattante, Sainimili a contribué à co-créer des réalités féministes qui renforcent l’inclusion et font évoluer les attitudes par rapport à l’égalité des personnes handicapées. Elle a été membre de la Spinal Injury Association of Fiji (SIA) ainsi que participé à la formation « Démarrez votre entreprise » de l’Organisation internationale du Travail à Suva via le projet « Pacific Enable » (le Pacifique rend possible) du Forum Asie-Pacifique sur le handicap. Elle a ainsi pu transformer ses idées en une entreprise qui lui était propre. Elle était commerçante sur l’étal de marché 7 de Suva, offrant des services de manucure, tout en gérant un stand au marché des femmes SIA pour y vendre de l’artisanat, des suls et des objets historiques. Sainimili planifiait d’élargir son commerce et de devenir une employeuse majeure de personnes handicapées. 

Outre son activisme, elle était également médaillée de tennis de table et une récente championne.

Avec sa personnalité vive, Sainimili était unique. On savait toujours lorsqu’elle était dans la pièce car ses rires et ses histoires étaient la première chose qu’on pouvait remarquer. -  Michelle  Reddy

Sainmili est décédée en 2019.

Deseamos saber de ustedes con independencia de su experiencia de financiamiento externo.
