In September 2016, the 13th AWID international Forum brought together in Brazil over 1800 feminists and women’s rights advocates in a spirit of resistance and resilience.
This section highlights the gains, learnings and resources that came out of our rich conversations. We invite you to explore, share and comment!
What has happened since 2016?
One of the key takeaways from the 2016 Forum was the need to broaden and deepen our cross-movement work to address rising fascisms, fundamentalisms, corporate greed and climate change.
With this in mind, we have been working with multiple allies to grow these seeds of resistance:
- Our Seed Initiatives, has helped 20 ideas that emerged at the Forum to grow into concrete actions
- The video “Defending people and planet” and guide “Weaving resistance through action” put courageous WHRDs in the spotlight and present concrete strategies they use to confront corporate power.
- With our animations about the State of Our Feminist Movements and Climate and Environmental Justice, movements now have creative tools to support their advocacy work.
- The compiling artistic expressions of our #MovementsMatter series continues to inspire stronger and more creative organizing around the world.
- Movements can also benefit from new methodologies on Visioning Feminist Futures (Coming up soon!)
And through our next strategic plan and Forum process, we are committed to keep developing ideas and deepen the learnings ignited at the 2016 Forum.
What happens now?
The world is a much different place than it was a year ago, and it will continue to change.
The next AWID Forum will take place in the Asia Pacific region (exact location and dates to be announced in 2018).

About the AWID Forum
AWID Forums started in 1983, in Washington DC. Since then, the event has grown to become many things to many peoples: an iterative process of sharpening our analyses, vision and actions; a watershed moment that reinvigorates participants’ feminisms and energizes their organizing; and a political home for women human rights defenders to find sanctuary and solidarity.

Case study 1 - Three Boats, a Horse and a Taxi: Pacific Feminists at the AWID Forums
This story is about how an increasingly diverse group of feminists from the Pacific organized through the years to attend the AWID Forums and how that process changed them personally, as organizations, and as a movement through what they learned, discovered and experienced. It illustrates the importance of the Forums as a space through which a region that tends to be marginalized or ignored at the global level can build a strong presence in the feminist movement that is then replicated at other international women’s rights spaces.
Esther Mwikali
Esther Mwikali’s home was in Mithini village, Murang’a County, Kenya. A prominent and valued land rights activist, she looked into abuses against squatters who are living on land claimed by tycoons. The investigation Esther was part of also involved land rights’ violations in Makuyu by powerful individuals.
After failing to attend a village meeting, a search party went looking for Esther. On 27 August 2019, two days after her disappearance, her body was found on a farm near her homestead, displaying signs of torture. She was brutally murdered.
“Esther was renowned for her work to prevent community members being evicted from land claimed by tycoons. Local activists had no doubt her murder was related to the area’s ongoing land struggles, a tragic reminder of the alarming regularity with which extra-judicial killings are routinely carried out in Kenya,” - Global Witness Report, July 2020

2007: se intensifica la participación de la sociedad civil con la creación del WWG sobre FpD
En octubre de 2007 se creó el Women’s Working Group on Financing for Development [Grupo de Trabajo de Mujeres sobre Financiación para el Desarrollo, WWG on FfD en inglés], una alianza entre organizaciones y redes por los derechos de las mujeres cuyo objetivo es defender y promover avances en cuanto a igualdad de género, empoderamiento de las mujeres y derechos humanos en los procesos de la ONU relacionados con la FpD.
Tercer Diálogo de Alto Nivel sobre la Financiación para el Desarrollo, 23 al 25 de octubre de 2007
- En el tercer panel de alto nivel, la participación de la sociedad civil se incrementó exponencialmente. Además de las seis mesas redondas, hubo audiencias para la sociedad civil y el sector empresarial.
- AWID leyó en plenaria la declaración de la sociedad civil que pedía a los gobiernos prestar una mayor atención a la importancia de las organizaciones por los derechos de las mujeres como agentes del desarrollo y a la necesidad de promover nuevos mecanismos de financiación para las mujeres en los países en desarrollo y los menos desarrollados. Esta declaración exhortó a los gobiernos a brindar un mayor apoyo a la arquitectura de género de la ONU para que el sistema en su conjunto pudiera avanzar en sus compromisos en materia de igualdad de género, empoderamiento de las mujeres y derechos humanos, incluyendo los derechos económicos, sociales, culturales y ambientales de todas las personas.

Stacey Park Milbern fue una mujer autodefinida como queer, con discapacidad y de color, además de una pionera. Líder y organizadora respetada y de amplia trayectoria en el movimiento por los derechos y la justicia para las personas con discapacidad, también defendió los derechos de muchas otras comunidades, y no solo los de la suya propia. El activismo de Stacey tenía raíces poderosas en su experiencia personal con las intersecciones del género, la discapacidad, la sexualidad y la raza.
Stacey, junto con algunxs amigxs, co-creó el Club de Cultura de Justicia para la Discapacidad, un grupo dedicado a apoyar a varias comunidades, especialmente aquellas más vulnerables, que, entre otras cosas, está ayudando a las personas sin hogar a acceder a recursos durante la pandemia del COVID-19.
También fue coproductora de una campaña con mucho impacto para el documental de Netflix "Crip Camp", integrante de la junta directiva de la Fundación WITH, y dirigió organizaciones a nivel local, estatal y nacional. Stacey escribió además de manera hermosa y poderosa:
"Mis antepasadxs son personas forzosamente separadas de sus amores a causa de la guerra y el desplazamiento. Es gracias a ellxs que hoy conozco el poder de construir un hogar con lo que tienes, dondequiera que estés, con quien quiera que estés. Mis antepasadxs son queers que vivieron en el sur de América. Es gracias a ellxs que entiendo la importancia de las relaciones, del lugar y de vivir la vida al máximo, aunque sea peligroso. Todxs mis antepasadxs conocen el anhelo. El anhelo es a menudo nuestro lugar de conexión..." - Stacey Park Milbern
Stacey nació en Seúl, Corea, y creció en Carolina del Norte, para después continuar con su viaje en el área de la bahía de San Francisco. Stacey falleció por complicaciones de una cirugía en su cumpleaños número 33, el 19 de mayo de 2020.

No tendremos la suerte de aprender hasta dónde su carismático liderazgo nos habría llevado. 2013: le sixième Dialogue de haut niveau examine les progrès des OMD
- Le sixième Dialogue de haut niveau sur le financement du développement, organisé les 7 et 8 octobre 2013, était axé sur l’évaluation des progrès accomplis dans la réalisation des OMD et l’identification des lacunes dans la mise en œuvre de ces derniers afin de les traiter lors des discussions sur le nouveau cadre de développement.
- Un rapport publié pendant la session par le Groupe de réflexion sur le retard pris dans la réalisation des objectifs du Millénaire pour le développement a identifié les lacunes constatées dans la réalisation de l’OMD 8 (Mettre en place un partenariat mondial pour le développement) comme un facteur déterminant des difficultés rencontrées dans le processus de mise en œuvre de l’ensemble des OMD. Le rapport a notamment montré qu’il était indispensable de concentrer davantage d’efforts sur l’établissement de partenariats mondiaux plus solides qui puissent garantir des engagements contraignants en faveur du nouveau cadre de développement pour l’après-2015.
