In September 2016, the 13th AWID international Forum brought together in Brazil over 1800 feminists and women’s rights advocates in a spirit of resistance and resilience.
This section highlights the gains, learnings and resources that came out of our rich conversations. We invite you to explore, share and comment!
What has happened since 2016?
One of the key takeaways from the 2016 Forum was the need to broaden and deepen our cross-movement work to address rising fascisms, fundamentalisms, corporate greed and climate change.
With this in mind, we have been working with multiple allies to grow these seeds of resistance:
- Our Seed Initiatives, has helped 20 ideas that emerged at the Forum to grow into concrete actions
- The video “Defending people and planet” and guide “Weaving resistance through action” put courageous WHRDs in the spotlight and present concrete strategies they use to confront corporate power.
- With our animations about the State of Our Feminist Movements and Climate and Environmental Justice, movements now have creative tools to support their advocacy work.
- The compiling artistic expressions of our #MovementsMatter series continues to inspire stronger and more creative organizing around the world.
- Movements can also benefit from new methodologies on Visioning Feminist Futures (Coming up soon!)
And through our next strategic plan and Forum process, we are committed to keep developing ideas and deepen the learnings ignited at the 2016 Forum.
What happens now?
The world is a much different place than it was a year ago, and it will continue to change.
The next AWID Forum will take place in the Asia Pacific region (exact location and dates to be announced in 2018).

About the AWID Forum
AWID Forums started in 1983, in Washington DC. Since then, the event has grown to become many things to many peoples: an iterative process of sharpening our analyses, vision and actions; a watershed moment that reinvigorates participants’ feminisms and energizes their organizing; and a political home for women human rights defenders to find sanctuary and solidarity.

Un Manifiesto
Como movimientos feministas y sindicales, juntxs en solidaridad, articulamos los siguientes puntos como una visión colectiva de las economías de los cuidados con los derechos de lxs trabajadorxs domésticxs como eje central.
Nuestro manifiesto responde a un contexto complejo:
El trabajo doméstico y de cuidado estuvo en la primera línea de fuego durante y después de la pandemia de COVID-19, al proporcionar los medios para sobrellevar las múltiples crisis globales que se intersectan. El Banco Mundial, el Fondo Monetario Internacional y otras instituciones multilaterales también reconocen la importancia del trabajo doméstico y de cuidados para el sostenimiento de la economía. Sin embargo, vemos que esta atención adopta un enfoque utilitarista (es decir, el trabajo de cuidados contribuye a sostener a la economía "productiva") centrado en el lucro, sin reconocer los cuidados como un derecho humano y un bien público, ni prestar atención a lxs trabajadorxs que realizan la mayor parte de este trabajo.

Un lieu de travail n'a pas à fonctionner sur la base de la concurrence et du profit. Un lieu de travail ne devrait pas exploiter les gens au profit d’autrui. C’est pourquoi les communautés marginalisées en dehors des économies formelles construisent des modèles coopératifs alternatifs basés sur l'autonomie, la coopération, la coresponsabilité, l'autogestion et la solidarité.
Les lieux de travail et coopératives autogérés par les travailleur·euses ont toujours offert d'autres moyens de générer des opportunités d'emploi, des revenus, une sécurité sociale et des épargnes, tout en distribuant les revenus de manière plus communautaire, durable et sûre.
Mais le coopérativisme c'est bien plus qu'une opportunité d'emploi: c'est la réalisation des rêves et la construction d’économies féministes basées sur la solidarité et l'entraide. C'est la création d’un monde où nos vies, notre travail et nos communautés comptent.
Voici l'histoire de la Coopérative Textile Nadia Echazú, la première coopérative créée et dirigée par et pour les personnes travesti et trans en Argentine.
Riham Al-Bader
Riham était avocate et activiste engagée à suivre de près la question des violations des droits au Yémen.
Elle a travaillé avec d'autres activistes pour fournir de la nourriture et de l'eau aux civils piégés par les milices houthies dans la banlieue de la ville de Taiz.
Riham a été tuée en février 2018. La cause de son décès, soit par la main d’un tireur d'élite ou par un tir de mortier, n’a pas été confirmée. Personne n'a été tenu responsable de son meurtre.

Shireen Lateef
Shireen was an inspiration to many feminists in Fiji and a powerful ally to the women’s movement. She advocated tirelessly for gender equality locally and regionally.
She began her career as a junior gender specialist at the Asian Development Bank and brought about drastic changes to the institution’s gender policies.
Her research, “Rule by the Danda: Domestic violence amongst Indo Fijians” was one of the earliest pieces of research on domestic violence, marriage and women in Fiji. This seminal work has been a catalyst for feminist work in this area.
Shireen’s legacy lives on as many remember her influence, commitment and support to the women’s movement in Fiji and the Pacific.

Mariam Uy Acob
Mariam era asistente jurídica en la Alianza Kawagib Moro por los Derechos Humanos.
Fue una acérrima crítica de la militarización de las comunidades moro, y denunció sistemáticamente los bombardeos aéreos y la concentración de campamentos militares. Tuvo que buscar refugio luego de exponer y denunciar las injusticias cometidas contra las comunidades musulmanas en Filipinas.
Se cree que fue asesinada por agentes militares sospechosos debido a su trabajo como defensora de derechos humanos. Los atacantes que mataron a Mariam la esperaron, se pusieron a la par del vehículo en el que se desplazaba y le dispararon siete veces.

Florence Adong-Ewoo
Florence était une militante des droits des personnes handicapées qui travaillait avec plusieurs organisations de femmes handicapées en Ouganda.
Elle a également occupé le poste de présidente de l’Association des femmes handicapées du district de Lira, ainsi que du caucus des conseillères du district de Lira. Formée en tant que conseillère pour personnes handicapées et parents d'enfants handicapés, elle a soutenu de nombreux projets appelant à une plus grande représentation des personnes handicapées.
Elle est morte dans un accident de moto.
