Forum de l'AWID : Co-créer nos horizons féministes
En septembre 2016, 1800 féministes et défenseur-e-s des droits des femmes venu-e-s des quatre coins de nos mouvements se réunissaient sur les côtes de Bahia à l’occasion du 13ème Forum international de l’AWID.
Cette section met l’accent sur les victoires, les enseignements et les ressources qui ont couronné nos conversations. Nous vous invitons à l’explorer, la partager et laisser vos impressions.
L’un des principaux éléments à retenir de ce Forum a été la nécessité d’élargir et d’approfondir notre travail de collaboration entre mouvements pour faire face à une montée des fascismes et des fondamentalismes, une exacerbation de la cupidité des entreprises et un changement climatique en progression.
L’AWID a donc travaillé avec plusieurs allié-e-s pour ériger ces semences de résistance :

La compilation des expressions artistiques des mouvements continue d’inspirer une organisation plus forte et plus créative dans le monde entier.

Les mouvements peuvent aussi bénéficier d’une nouvelle méthodologie pour envisager nos horizons féministes. (à venir bientôt !)
A travers son prochain plan stratégique et le processus de son Forum, l’AWID s’engage à poursuivre et approfondir les rapports, les apprentissages et les processus amorcés lors du Forum 2016, tout en s’inspirant de l’actualité.

Le monde est bien différent de celui qu’il était l’an dernier et il continuera à changer dans les années à venir.

A propos du Forum de l’AWID
Les Forums de l’AWID ont vu le jour en 1983, à Washington DC. Depuis, ils revêtent de nombreux aspects et incarnent, selon les personnes, tantôt un processus itératif visant à affiner nos analyses, notre vision et nos actions, un évènement clé galvanisant les féminismes des participant-e-s et leurs organisations ou un espace politique offrant refuge et solidarité aux défenseur-se-s des droits humains.

Juli Dugdale
Juli Dugdale était une féministe australienne pratiquant un leadership intergénérationnel ancré dans les principes du féminisme, de l’inclusion et de l’égalité. Elle était une leader, une pair et une encadrante pour de nombreuses femmes, et particulièrement des jeunes femmes du monde entier.
Juli a été une membre dévouée de l’équipe de l’Association des jeunes femmes chrétiennes (YWCA), bénévole et fervente défenseure du leadership des jeunes femmes pendant plus de 30 ans.
Elle assurait un lien très fort entre le mouvement australien du YWCA et le bureau international. Sa confiance dans les capacités de leadership des jeunes femmes a entre autres donné lieu à un partenariat pluriannuel avec le ministère australien des Affaires étrangères et du Commerce, de même qu’à la rédaction du manuel Rise Up, un guide mondial pour le leadership transformationnel des jeunes femmes, lancé en 2018.
Juli est décédée à Genève, en Suisse, le 12 août 2019.

Biography
Stephanie Bracken es una feminista dedicada a construir y a apoyar sistemas fuertes orientados a atender las necesidades del momento y las personas que interactúan con ellos y responden a principios de la justicia. Tiene una maestría en Derechos Humanos de la Universidad de Sydney y una licenciatura en Estudios de Género, Historia y Filosofía de la Universidad McGill. Posee experiencia de trabajo con organizaciones feministas y por la justicia social en seguimiento, evaluación y aprendizaje, planificación del trabajo estratégico, gobernanza, gestión de proyectos y establecimiento de sistemas y procesos operacionales. Stephanie vive en Tiohtià:ke/Montreal, donde disfruta de cantar con otrxs, acampar, el arte textil y pasar tiempo con sus hijes y su comunidad.

Lina Ben Mhenni
“I want to tell all Tunisians: We have to unite to say no to censorship and opinion trials.” - Lina Ben Mhenni (2013 interview)
Lina Ben Mhenni was a Tunisian blogger, activist and linguistics lecturer. She was vocal against internet censorship, defended the freedom of expression and was an advocate for women’s and human rights. Lina also fought for the release of students arrested under former President Zine El Abidine.
“It’s true that information and the internet are important but being on the ground is crucial for a revolution. Some people here in Tunisia think that change can occur just by clicking like on the internet. I believe you have to be active on the ground. And of course, join actions on the field with the action on the web.” - Lina Ben Mhenni (Interview in POCIT)
In 2010, she co-organized a protest that challenged the government suppression of media and internet censorship. Lina was widely known for her blog “A Tunisian Girl” and recognized for her work during the Tunisian revolution in 2011. In her blog, she reported on the news from the uprising, shared images documenting protests and was among the few voices who spoke about the killings and crackdown on protesters in Sidi Bouzid. Lina blogged using her real name instead of a pseudonym to protect her identity, one of only a few bloggers to do so.

Lina was only 36 years old when she passed away on 27 January 2020, as a result of complications from an autoimmune disease.

Biography
Margarita est une militante féministe et LGBTIQA d'Amérique latine. Elle est passionnée de transformation sociale et de bien-être collectif. Elle est titulaire de diplômes en psychologie, communication et en administration publique, ainsi que de certificats en politiques publiques, leadership, gestion et prise de décision. Durant son parcours professionnel, Margarita a acquis une vaste expérience auprès d'organisations de terrain, d'ONG nationales et régionales, d'universités et du secteur public, développant la facilitation, le renforcement des capacités, le plaidoyer politique, la communication et l'évaluation des politiques.

Funding Ideas
This page provides ideas and inspiration for how you can fund your participation at the 14th AWID International Forum.
As you plan the activity you would like to do at the Forum, please also consider how you will fund your participation. Typical Costs include: accommodation, travel, visa, forum registration fees, etc.
It is important to note that this Forum will have many ‘open spaces’ and moments for movements to learn and exchange, but fewer formal sessions. (See “Ways to describe the Forum in your fundraising” below for language to use in your outreach.)
Work with your current funders:
Reach out to your current donors first : Your best option is always a current funder that you have.
Make sure to do it in advance : We recommend contacting them by early 2020 at the latest. Many funders who support feminist organizations have some budget allocated for Forum travel. Others may be able to include it in renewal grants or through other travel funds.
If your group has funders, tell them that you want to attend the AWID Forum to learn, experience, exchange and network- even if your activity does not get selected for the final program. In order to be able to support your participation, your donors will need to know about it well in advance so tell them right away! (they are already deciding which funds they will distribute in 2020).
Seeking new funders:
If you do not currently have donor support or are not able to secure grants for Forum travel, consider reaching out to new donors.
- You can see ideas of specific funders at AWID’s portal ‘Who can fund my women’s rights organizing?’
- Consider reaching out to national, regional, or global feminist and women’s funds
- Explore funder networks, such as Candid and European Foundation Centres, for lists of funders and opportunities in your region
Deadlines and requirements vary by funder, and a grant review process can take many months. If you’re considering applying for new grants, do so as soon as possible.
Creative inspiration:
Feminist movements have long gotten creative with funding our own activism. Here are some ideas that we have gathered to inspire alternative ways of fundraising:
- Mobilize your community to support participation: fundraise with small contributions from members through community dinners, dance parties, and local shows, events and tours
- Mobilize your networks by organizing giving circles and crowdsourcing using various online tools like gofundme, indiegogo, plumfund, or kickstarter
- Cultivate local sources of income, including from individual donors and membership dues
- Consider co-funding through strategic partnerships with other community and social justice groups.

Access Fund:
AWID strives to make the Forum a truly global gathering with participation from diverse movements, regions and generations. To this end, AWID mobilizes resources for a limited Access Fund (AF) to assist Forum participants with the costs of attending the Forum.
AWID’s Access Fund will provide support to a limited number of Forum participants and session/activity facilitators. You can indicate in your application if you would like to apply to the AWID Access Fund. This is not guaranteed, and we strongly encourage you to seek alternative funding for your participation and travel to the Forum.
Even if you apply for the AWID Access Fund, we encourage you to continue to explore other options to fund your participation in the Forum. Access Fund decisions will be confirmed by the end of June 2020. Please remember that these resources are very limited, and we will be unable to support all applicants.
Ways to describe the Forum in your fundraising:
As you reach out to funders or your own networks, here is some sample messaging that may be helpful. Feel free to adapt it in whatever way is useful for you!
The AWID Forum is a co-created feminist movement space that energizes participants in their own activism, and strengthens connections with others across multiple rights and justice movements. Participants get to draw from wells of hope, energy and radical imagination, as well as deepen shared analysis, learning, and build cross-movement solidarity to develop more integrated agendas and advance joint strategies.
Our organization is seeking funds to attend the Forum in order to connect with other activists and movements from around the world, strengthen our strategies, and share our work. We are inspired by past participants, who have described the power of this global feminist gathering:
“Over four days … voices weaved together into a global perspective on the state of gender equality. And when I say global, I mean simultaneous translation into seven languages kind of global ....”
“It was reminding us that we are not alone. The Forum provided a means of translating collectivity into our movements. Whether across ideologies, identities or borders, our strength is in our vision and our support of one another.”
It is important to note that this Forum will have many ‘open spaces’ and moments for movements to learn and exchange, but fewer formal sessions. While many attendees will not be presenting in formal sessions, there will be invaluable space to learn, strategize, and experience feminist movements’ collective power in action.
Budget considerations:
When calculating your costs and how much you need to raise, it is important to factor in costs that may come up. Here’s an example of key items to consider:
- Airfare
- Forum registration fees (please note that even if you are granted Access Funds by AWID, you will have to cover your registration fee yourself)
- Visa costs
- Travel health insurance
- Local travel to and from the airport (taxis or other transportation)
- Layover costs, such as hotels and meals if your plane travel requires a long layover
- Accommodation, including giving yourself a day to recover on either end if you have traveled far
- Technology, including WiFi access or fees for international communication as needed during travel (AWID will provide WiFi during the Forum)
- Materials costs for any items (visuals, reports, artwork!) you want to bring, share, or exchange at the Forum
- Incidentals and/or per diems to cover food and other items that come up (all lunches and coffee/tea breaks, plus one dinner will be provided by AWID during Forum days)
- Accessibility, such as any additional support that may be important to make your travel more comfortable, safe, and secure

The Forum is a collaborative process
The AWID Forum will now take place 11-14 January 2021 in Taipei .
It is more than a four-day convening. It is one more stop on a movement strengthening journey around Feminist Realities that has already begun and will continue well beyond the Forum dates.

Gloria Chicaiza
Gloria Chicaiza, una activista social y ambiental ecuatoriana, fue una ferviente defensora de la tierra y el agua. Desafió el statu quo, al luchar contra un modelo de desarrollo basado en la extracción, y trabajó incansablemente por la justicia ecológica y los derechos de las comunidades afectadas por la minería.
Gloria participó en las acciones de resistencia para la protección del ecosistema en distintas áreas de Ecuador. Con pasión y dedicación, Gloria apoyó al movimiento indígena y ambiental, a sus comunidades y a las organizaciones que se oponen a los proyectos de minería y protegen sus territorios y sus proyectos de vida colectivos. En foros locales e internacionales, se pronunció contra la criminalización del disenso y la resistencia, contra la presión y la violencia ejercidas contra lxs activistas comunitarixs (y, en particular, contra las defensoras de derechos humanos), y a favor de los esfuerzos comunitarios por la soberanía alimentaria y la sustentabilidad.
Fue Coordinadora del Área de Justicia Minera de Acción Ecológica, participó en la Red Latinoamericana de Mujeres Defensoras de Derechos Sociales y Ambientales, e integró la Junta Directiva del Observatorio de Conflictos Mineros de América Latina (OCMAL).
En octubre de 2010, la compañía minera Curimining/Salazar Resources S.A. (con sede en Vancouver, Canadá) acusó a Gloria de auspiciar un acto de terrorismo, sabotaje y asociación ilícita para delinquir. Acción Ecológica consideró que esto fue «en represalia por su trabajo de denuncia de los impactos de las actividades mineras en el país».
En 2014 Gloria apoyó la coordinación de una delegación a la Conferencia Internacional sobre Cambio Climático (COP 20) de la ONU. El grupo estuvo integrado por veinticinco mujeres indígenas de América Latina.
Gloria falleció el 28 de diciembre de 2019 por complicaciones de un trasplante de pulmón. Es recordada por su resistencia y su incansable trabajo.

Faye Macheke
Biography
Faye is a passionate Pan-African feminist, active in movements for women's rights, racial justice, migrant and labor rights, and environmental justice. Her activism builds on the legacy of the struggle against apartheid in South Africa and the aftermath of the apartheid era in Zimbabwe.
In 2019, Faye joined AWID as the Director of Finance, Operations and Development, and strived to ensure that AWID upholds the feminist principles and values in all of its operations. She brings over 20 years of experience in feminist leadership, strategy, and all aspects of finance and organizational development.
Faye is a committed Board Member of UAF-Africa and other women's rights organizations. She previously held a Head of Finance and Operations roles at Paediatric Adolescent Treatment for Africa and JASS - Just Associates Inc. in Southern Africa. She also held Directorship roles for International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) in Central and Southern Africa. She holds a Bcompt in Accounting Science from University of South Africa and is a member of the Southern African Institute for Business Accountants.
