Defensorxs de Derechos Humanos

Lxs defensorxs se identifican a sí mismas como mujeres y personas lesbianas, bisexuales, transgénero, queer e intersex (LBTQI) y otrxs que defienden derechos y que debido a su trabajo en derechos humanos están bajo riesgos y amenazas específicos por su género y/o como consecuencia directa de su identidad de género u orientación sexual.

Lxs defensorxs son objeto de violencia y discriminación sistemáticas debido a sus identidades y su inclaudicable lucha por derechos, igualdad y justicia.

El Programa Defensorxs colabora con contrapartes internacionales y regionales así como con lxs afiliadxs de AWID para crear conciencia acerca de estos riesgos y amenazas, abogar por medidas de protección y de seguridad que sean feministas e integrales, y promover activamente una cultura del autocuidado y el bienestar colectivo en nuestros movimientos.

Riesgos y amenazas dirigidos específicamente contra lxs defensorxs

lxs defensorxs enfrentan los mismos tipos de riesgos que todxs lxs demás defensorxs de derechos humanos, de comunidades y del medio ambiente. Sin embargo, también están expuestas a violencia y a riesgos específicos por su género porque desafían las normas de género de sus comunidades y sociedades.

Por defender derechos, lxs defensorxs están en riesgo de:

  • Ataques físicos y muerte
  • Intimidación y acoso, incluso en los espacios virtuales
  • Acoso judicial y criminalización
  • Agotamiento

Un enfoque integral y colaborativo de la seguridad

Trabajamos de manera colaborativa con redes internacionales y regionales y con nuestrxs afiliadxs

  • para crear conciencia de las violaciones de derechos humanos contra lxs defensorxs y de la violencia y discriminación sistemáticas que enfrentan
  • para fortalecer los mecanismos de protección y asegurar respuestas más oportunas y efectivas para lxs defensorxs que están en riesgo

Trabajamos para promover un enfoque integral de la protección que incluya:

  • remarcar la importancia del autocuidado y el bienestar colectivo, y reconocer que el significado de cuidado y bienestar puede variar entre las diferentes culturas;
  • documentar las violaciones dirigidas contra lxs defensorxs usando una perspectiva feminista interseccional;
  • promover el reconocimiento y celebración social del trabajo y la resiliencia de lxs defensorxs; y
  • construir espacios ciudadanos que conduzcan al desmantelamiento de las desigualdades estructurales sin restricciones ni obstáculos.

Nuestras acciones

Nos proponemos contribuir a un mundo más seguro para lxs defensorxs, sus familias y comunidades. Creemos que actuar por los derechos y la justicia no debe poner en riesgo a lxs defensorxs, sino que debe ser valorado y celebrado.

  • Promoviendo la colaboración y coordinación entre organizaciones de derechos humanos y organizaciones de derechos de las mujeres en el plano internacional para fortalecer la capacidad de respuesta en relación a la seguridad y el bienestar de lxs defensorxs.

  • Apoyando a las redes regionales de defensorxs y de sus organizaciones, tales como la Iniciativa Mesoamericana de Mujeres Defensorxs de Derechos Humanos y la WHRD Middle East and North Africa  Coalition [Coalición de Defensorxs de Derechos Humanos de Medio Oriente y África del Norte], promoviendo y fortaleciendo la acción colectiva para la protección, poniendo el énfasis en establecer redes de solidaridad y protección, promover el autocuidado y la incidencia y movilización por la seguridad de lxs defensorxs.

  • Aumentando la visibilidad y el reconocimiento de lxs defensorxs y sus luchas, así como de los riesgos que enfrentan, a través de la documentación de los ataques que sufren, e investigando, produciendo y difundiendo información sobre sus luchas, estrategias y desafíos.

  • Movilizando respuestas urgentes de solidaridad internacional para lxs defensorxs que están en riesgo a través de nuestras redes internacionales y regionales y de nuestrxs afiliadxs activxs.

Mridula fue una firme promotora de la salud de las mujeres en una época en la que el tema de la salud sexual y reproductiva de las mujeres se consideraba tabú en Fiji.

Mridula orientó los primeros trabajos del movimiento por los derechos de las mujeres en Fiji sobre derechos sexuales y reproductivos y, en septiembre de 1999, el Fondo de Población de las Naciones Unidas le otorgó un premio regional sobre salud y derechos reproductivos. Fue una activista férrea, comprometida e incansable y apasionada por la salud y el empoderamiento de las mujeres.

Fue una valiosa integrante del movimiento de mujeres y del movimiento feminista de Fiji y sus aportes se recordarán por siempre. Falleció en 2017 por causas naturales.

Amal était une femme politique et une parlementaire de premier plan en Libye.

Membre du corps professoral de l'Université de Benghazi de 1995 jusqu’à sa mort en 2017, elle militait par ailleurs au sein de la société civile et était membre de diverses initiatives sociales et politiques. Elle a aidé les familles des martyrs et des disparus et a été l'une des membres fondateurs-trices d'une initiative de jeunesse intitulée « Jeunesse de Benghazi en Libye ».

Lors des élections législatives de 2014, Amal avait été élue à la Chambre des représentants avec plus de 14 000 voix (le plus grand nombre de voix jamais obtenues aux élections de 2014). Amal restera dans les mémoires de beaucoup comme une femme politique qui a œuvré pour assurer un avenir meilleur dans l'un des contextes les plus difficiles et les plus conflictuels de la région.

Many beautiful things emerged from the 2016 Black Feminisms Forum (BFF) that was organized by an Advisory Group and funded by AWID. Some of the independent organizing that arose from the BFF include Black feminist organizing in Brazil. While we won’t have another BFF this year, we remain committed to sharing some key learnings with anyone interested in continuing work around Black feminist organizing.

The fight for a world full of workplaces that are free from of all forms of discrimination, stigma and exclusion is  a worthy one. A world in which sex work is decriminalized and recognized as work is part of this.

A world where all workers have safe working conditions, dignified wages, and can enjoy the same rights like health care, pension pay, sick days, holidays, job security and more, no matter their gender, race, ethnicity, age or ability. Labor rights are feminist issues, and feminist unions play a key role in advancing the legal, labor and economic rights of all workers, especially migrant workers, domestic workers, informal workers and sex workers. These are folks who have most recently been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, its burdens of care, lockdowns, curfews and increased policing. Let us introduce you to the stories of feminists and union organizers that are fighting for better working conditions and better worlds for all.

Affectionately known as “Mama Efua”, her work to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) movement spanned three decades and helped bring international attention and action to end this harmful practice.

In 1983 Efua co-founded FORWARD (The Foundation for Women’s Health, Research and Development), which became a leading organisation in the battle to raise awareness about FGM. Her 1994 book, “Cutting the Rose: Female Genital Mutilation,” is considered the first on FGM and, featured in Columbia University’s “Africa’s 100 Best Books for the 20th Century”.

Originally from Ghana and a nurse by training, Efua joined the WHO in 1995 and successfully pushed for FGM to go on the agendas of WHO member states. She also worked closely with the Nigerian government in formulating a comprehensive National Policy that laid the groundwork for Nigeria’s anti-FGM laws, still in place today.

Her ground breaking work culminated in an Africa-led campaign, “The Girl Generation,” which is committed to ending FGM within a generation. Efua demonstrated how one person can become the unifying voice for a movement, and her wise words - “shared identity can help bring activists from different backgrounds together with a common sense of purpose” – are more relevant than ever.

Snippet FEA Georgia's minimum wage (ES)

El salario mínimo de Georgia se encuentra en un porcentaje inferior al de todos los países del mundo. Esta realidad afecta mayoritariamente a las mujeres.

El país no solo tiene una brecha salarial de género significativa, sino que las mujeres también trabajan más horas y más horas no reguladas antes de irse a casa para ocuparse de las tareas domésticas y de sus familias. No hay licencia por maternidad, no hay aumentos de salario por horas extras, no hay seguro de desempleo, y no hay licencias por enfermedad u otra protección social. Presionados por organizaciones occidentales, los partidos políticos oligárquicos georgianos han estado implementando reformas que están destruyendo el estado de bienestar, aumentando las medidas de austeridad y empeorando la explotación de lxs trabajadorxs, todo para los beneficios de grandes corporaciones que aplauden al país por su "facilidad para hacer negocios". Los medios de comunicación, cooptados por intereses privados y corporativos, están sesgados sobre estos temas o los silencian. La organización sindical sigue siendo una de las pocas opciones para luchar por los derechos humanos básicos y para hacer que el Estado y las empresas rindan cuentas ante las violaciones y persecuciones diarias y generalizadas contra lxs trabajadorxs, especialmente contra las mujeres.

Mexican WHRDs

The data from our tribute indicate that Mexico is a particularly dangerous country for defenders. Out of the 12 Mexican Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) we commemorate in this years’ Tribute, 11 were murdered. They were journalists, women’s rights advocates, trans* rights and social activists. Join us in remembering and honoring these WHRDs, their work and legacy by sharing the memes below and tweeting by using the hashtags #WHRDTribute and #16Days.

Zita fue una activista por los derechos de las mujeres que defendió los derechos de las mujeres rurales en el Gran Kivu.

Fue la primera directora ejecutiva de UWAKI, una organización de mujeres muy conocida. A través de su trabajo con la Red de Mujeres por los Derechos y la Paz (RFDP) y el Foro de Mujeres por la Paz de Kivu del Sur, dedicó su vida a ayudar a restablecer la paz en la zona oriental de la República Democrática del Congo. Se manifestó firmemente en contra del uso de la violencia sexual como arma de guerra.

En 2006, se propuso como candidata en las primeras elecciones democráticas del país. Aunque no ganó, siguió defendiendo los derechos de las mujeres y la comunidad de Kivu del Sur la recuerda con cariño.
