Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:
Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.
Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.
Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.
Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations
Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

We believe that for feminist movements to be transformative and strong we must continue to work across our similarities and differences. We also must interrogate power and privilege both within and outside our movements.
Antes de retirarse, ocupó muchas posiciones de alto perfil, como por ejemplo miembrx de la Corte de Apelaciones de Uganda y Presidenta Adjunta de la Corte Suprema de Uganda. Fue la primera mujer ugandesa en ocupar el cargo de Primera Magistrada entre 1973 y 1986, y la primera mujer en ser nombrada jueza de la Corte Suprema en 1986.

The artwork is a photography and illustration collaboration between Siphumeze and Katia during lockdown. The work looks at black queer sex and plesure narratives, bondage, safe sex, toys, mental health and sex and many more. It was created to accompany the Anthology Touch.

About the Artists:
Siphumeze Khundayi is an art-maker, photographer and facilitator interested in creative ways of bringing together dialogue and artistic practice in relation to African Queer identity.
She is creative director of HOLAAfrica! a pan-Africanist womanist online collective.
Her solo and collaborative performance work has been featured in a number of festivals and theatre spaces such as Ricca Ricca Festival in Japan
She directed two Naledi nominated productions in 2017 and 2018. She directed a show that won a Standard Bank Ovation award in 2020.
As a photographer she was part of a group exhibition titled Flowers of my Soul in Italy organised by the Misfit Project. Produced three publications for HOLAAfrica and was published in and provided the cover for volume two: As You Like of the Gerald Kraak Anthologies.
Katia Herrera is a 21-year-old Digital visual artist from the noisy city of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Despite Herrera being a self-proclaimed introvert, her artwork is remarkably loud in a world trying to quiet black voices. With titles like Black Woman, You Own the Moon, Earth Goddess, Forever, and Universe Protector, Herrera’s legacy will be marked by her passion for highlighting the endurance and perseverance of black folks of old and present to contrast the narrative that black skin should only be associated with slavery.
One of her most lovely and vivaciously titled works, Universe Protector, portrays the black soul as a divine entity full of strength, power, and greatness. In her youth, her love of graphic design was stimulated by her parents’ artistry and the Photoshop they had downloaded on their computer for their professional photography.

Our group, organization and/or movement has not taken or mobilized funding from external funders, should we take the survey?
Yes! We recognize and appreciate different reasons why feminists, in their respective contexts, don’t have external funding: from being ineligible to apply for grants and/or receive money from abroad, to relying on resources generated autonomously as a political strategy in its own right. We want to hear from you regardless of your experience with external funding.

Primer Diálogo de Alto Nivel sobre la Financiación para el Desarrollo, 29 y 30 de octubre de 2003
Uno de los mecanismos de seguimiento de la Conferencia de Monterrey fueron los Diálogos de Alto Nivel sobre la Financiación para el Desarrollo organizados cada dos años por la Asamblea General de la ONU. En total, ya se realizaron ocho mesas redondas en las que se ha continuado el Diálogo acerca de distintos temas como los subsidios a la agricultura, el comercio, el alivio de la deuda y la financiación para los ODM. En todas ellas se prestó especial atención a los obstáculos estructurales que colocan en desventaja a las naciones ‘en desarrollo’.
Otros mecanismos de seguimiento a Monterrey son los siguientes:
La reunión especial de alto nivel organizada por el Consejo Económico y Social de la ONU (ECOSOC) que se realiza cada año, bajo liderazgo del Banco Mundial, el Fondo Monetario Internacional, la Organización Mundial del Comercio y la UNCTAD (Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre Comercio y Desarrollo) como seguimiento al Consenso de Monterrey. El ECOSOC también dedica hasta dos días para deliberar sobre los temas de la agenda de la FpD durante su sesión sustantiva.
El Comité de Expertos sobre la Cooperación Internacional en Materia Fiscal, que es el órgano de la ONU especializado en el tema impositivo, se ocupa de los distintos aspectos de las políticas fiscales identificados en el Consenso de Monterrey y aporta un marco para el diálogo que permita mejorar y promover la cooperación internacional en cuestiones tributarias entre autoridades nacionales del área fiscal.

Ursula was an American novelist who worked mainly in the genres of fantasy and science fiction.
She found fame with The Left Hand Of Darkness, which imagines a future society where people are ambisexual – they have no fixed sex. It explores the effects of gender and sex in society, and was one of the first major feminist science fiction books. Ursula was inspiring in her subversive and original writing, and also for the themes of feminism and freedom she held so dearly.
In a 1983 address at Mills College in California, she told graduates: “Why should a free woman with a college education either fight Macho-man or serve him? Why should she live her life on his terms? I hope you live without the need to dominate, and without the need to be dominated.”

Ces institutions sont cependant de plus en plus soumises aux intérêts du secteur privé. Les grandes entreprises, surtout les sociétés transnationales, siègent à la table des négociations et occupent des fonctions de leadership dans plusieurs institutions multilatérales, l’ONU notamment. Le lien entre ultranationalisme, restriction de l’espace civique et emprise des entreprises a un impact considérable sur la réalisation ou non des droits humains pour tout le monde.

Le quatrième Dialogue de haut niveau sur le financement du développement s’est tenu les 23 et 24 mars 2010sur le thème Le Consensus de Monterrey et la Déclaration de Doha sur le financement du développement : état de la mise en œuvre et responsabilités futures. Dans ce cadre, quatre tables rondes ont été organisées sur les sujets suivants : la réforme des systèmes monétaires et financiers internationaux, l’impact de la crise financière sur les investissements étrangers directs, le commerce international et les flux financiers privés et enfin le rôle de la coopération financière et technique pour le développement – dont celui des nouvelles sources de financement du développement – dans l’optimisation de la mobilisation des ressources nationales et internationales en faveur du développement.
Un dialogue interactif informel a également permis à différentes parties prenantes de se concentrer sur le lien qui unit le financement du développement et les objectifs du Millénaire pour le développement.
