Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Mariam Uy Acob
Mariam était assistante juridique à l'Alliance des droits humains Kawagib Moro.
Mariam était une fervente critique de la militarisation imposée aux communautés moro et a constamment dénoncé les bombardements aériens et les cantonnements de troupes. Elle a dû fuir et chercher refuge après avoir révélé et dénoncé des injustices commises à l'encontre des communautés musulmanes aux Philippines.
Il semble que Mariam ait été assassinée par de présumés agents de l'armée à cause de son action en tant que défenseure. Les assaillants qui l‘ont tuée l’ont épiée, ont rattrapé le véhicule dans lequel elle se trouvait et ont fait feu sur elle à sept reprises.

From the rising right in many countries and the flurry of funding cuts hitting hard civil society of the Global Majority, to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, the intensification of violent conflicts in Sudan, and climate crisis in many parts of our planet, we are facing real forces of fascism and a world order of impunity. This makes our opportunities to come together and build solidarity particularly valuable and imperative for our survival as a global feminist community. Of course, in 2024, the 15th AWID International Forum finally happened, and what a powerful space it was.

Crear conjuntamente espacios amigables y seguros
La creación conjunta de nuestras realidades feministas comienza con nosotrxs mismxs y con cómo nos tratamos mutuamente. Nos esforzamos por crear y proteger espacios seguros para nuestras comunidades, tanto en línea como en forma presencial.
También creemos que los espacios seguros y amigables son de propiedad y creación conjuntas. Esperamos que nuestrxs integrantes actúen de manera ética, responsable y consistente con los valores de AWID, y asuman la responsabilidad colectiva de garantizar una atmósfera de respeto y solidaridad recíprocos.
Se alienta a toda la membresía de AWID a:

Conéctate con otrxs, ayuda a romper el aislamiento y a promover la solidaridad. Es muy fácil sentirse perdidx y solx, y ser tratadx en forma amable y receptiva resulta de suma ayuda.

Interactúa y conéctate de forma pacífica. Surgirán diferencias de opinión, naturalmente: por favor, considera que estas diferencias son útiles para expandir tu pensamiento y tu modo de ver el mundo.

Ayuda a construir un espacio que reconozca y valide las múltiples experiencias de vida y las diversidades corporales y de expresiones de género. Reconoce que todxs tenemos identidades interseccionales.

Utiliza lenguaje inclusivo. Respeta la forma en que las personas quieren ser nombradas en términos de identidad o expresión de género (como los pronombres), y practica el uso del lenguaje inclusivo.

Escucha y modifica tu comportamiento y tu forma de interactuar si alguien dice que se siente incómodx. No preguntes a otras personas cosas que no te gustaría que te pregunten a ti.

Ayuda a combatir comportamientos opresivos, como, por ejemplo, acoso, violencia verbal o física, violación de consentimiento, y cualquier acción que perpetúe el clasismo, la discriminación por edad y/o capacidad, el racismo, la misoginia, el heterosexismo, la transfobia y otras opresiones. Si fuera necesario, por favor, contacta al personal de AWID.

Habla y escucha con la mente y el corazón abiertos, y sin juzgar.

Sé honestx, abierto y sincerx. Comparte y habla en forma auténtica sobre tus esperanzas y tus sueños, y tus ideas para tu propia vida y tu comunidad.

Ana M. Tallada Iglesia
Ana was a strong advocate of women’s rights and worked with a broad cross-section of women, from those in grassroots networks to those in the private sector.
She believed in building bridges across sectors. Ana was a member of the National Network for the Promotion of Women (RNPM), and was active in developing many social programs that address issues such as sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Isabel Marler
Biography
Isabel est une féministe du Royaume-Uni avec plus d'une décennie d'expérience de réponses féministes aux fascismes, aux fondamentalismes et aux tendances antidroits. À l'AWID, son travail se concentre sur le renforcement des connaissances. Elle a notamment dirigé la production de la série Droits en danger en collaboration avec l'Observatoire sur l'universalité des droits (OUR). Elle est titulaire d’un master en études sur le genre de l’École d’études orientales et africaines (SOAS) et a précédemment travaillé avec Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML). Elle est passionnée par le travail intermouvements, la construction de connaissances centrées sur les mouvements et l’utilisation de l’expression créative pour perturber les systèmes d’oppression. En dehors du travail, Isabel est active dans divers espaces de justice liée au handicap, aux soins collectifs, à l’apprentissage et au plaidoyer.

Marceline Loridan-Ivens
Nacida en 1928, Marceline trabajó como actriz, guionista y directora.
Dirigió The Birch-Tree Meadow en 2003, protagonizada por Anouk Aimee, así como varios otros documentales. También fue una sobreviviente del Holocausto. Tenía solo quince años cuando ella y su padre fueron arrestadxs y enviadxs a campos de concentración nazis. Los tres kilómetros entre su padre en Auschwitz y ella en Birkenau eran una distancia infranqueable, sobre la cual escribió en una de sus novelas más influyentes: Pero no regresaste.
Al hablar sobre su trabajo, una vez afirmó: «Todo lo que puedo decir es que todo lo que pueda escribir, todo lo que pueda develar, es mi tarea hacerlo».
Margo Okazawa-Rey
Biography
Margo Okazawa-Rey is an activist-educator and transnational feminist working on issues of militarism for nearly 30 years. She is a founder member of the International Women’s Network against Militarism and Women for Genuine Security, the US group of the Network. She has long-standing activist commitments with Du Re Bang/My Sisters Place in South Korea and Women’s Centre for Legal Aid and Counselling in Palestine. She also serves on the International Board of PeaceWomen Across the Globe in Bern, Switzerland and is President of the Board of Directors of Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID). Her foundational activist/life principle is that love is a radical act. She is also known as DJ MOR Love and Joy.
