Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Bessy Ferrera
Bessy Ferrera was a lifelong defender of the human rights of trans people, sex workers and HIV positive people in Honduras.
Bessy was also a member of Arcoíris, an organisation which supports the LGBTI+ community. She was also a focal point person for the Right Here, Right Now (Derechos aquí y Ahora) Platform of Honduras, and advocated strongly for full citizenship of trans people, and the passing of a gender identity law that would allow trans people to change their gender identity legally.

Bessy was a sex worker, and in early July 2019, was shot to death by two men while working in the streets of Comayagüela. Her assailants were subsequently arrested.
Bessy is one of many LGBTI+ rights defenders in Honduras, who were murdered because of their identities and work. Other companeras include: Cynthia Nicole, Angy Ferreira, Estefania "Nia" Zuniga, Gloria Carolina Hernandez Vasquez, Paola Barraza, Violeta Rivas, and Sherly Montoya.
Bessy’s case is emblematic of injustice and a much larger problem of the systematic violence the LGBTI+ community faces in Honduras as the state fails to guarantee rights offer and fails to offer protection. This has created a culture of impunity.
Despite the risks LGBTI+ defenders in Honduras face, they continue their work to challenge and resist violence, and fight stigma and discrimination on a daily basis.

Michelle es una feminista de Sudeste Asiático que disfruta de conspirar para congregar a las personas y suscitar conversaciones para el cambio social y el intercambio de conocimientos feministas, a través del arte, la poesía, la música y el juego. Con experiencia en promoción digital y desarrollo de estrategias de comunicación, ha contribuido a iniciativas de derechos digitales, investigaciones en derechos humanos y a la construcción de coaliciones de la sociedad civil a lo largo y ancho del Sudeste Asiático. Posee una licenciatura en Derecho de la Universidad Nacional de Singapur, disfruta de pasear al azar por las calles de la ciudad y le gusta un poquito demasiado el café.

Yelena Grigoriyeva
Yelena Grigoriyeva, a menudo conocida entre sus amigxs como Lena, fue una destacada defensora de los derechos LGBT en Rusia.
Formó parte de movimientos democráticos, anti-guerra y LGBT. En su activismo, fue una crítica feroz del Presidente Vladimir Putin y su administración, y expresó su oposición a la anexión por parte de Rusia de la península de Crimea de Ucrania y al maltrato de prisionerxs.

Yelena, de hecho, recibió múltiples amenazas de muerte y, según algunxs de sus conocidxs, figuraba en un sitio web homofóbico que instaba a sus visitantes a que persiguieran a las personas LGBT. Yelena denunció las amenazas a la policía, pero el Estado ruso no le proporcionó ningún tipo de protección.
Sin embargo, Yelena, a pesar de vivir en una sociedad en la que la oposición política, así como lxs integrantes de la comunidad LGBT y lxs defensores de sus derechos, se enfrentan a una violencia continua y creciente, siguió haciendo campaña por la justicia social y la igualdad.

Yelena fue asesinada el 21 de julio de 2019, cerca de su casa. Las autoridades detuvieron a una persona sospechosa pero, según algunas fuentes, muchxs amigxs y compañerxs activistas creen que es un chivo expiatorio y que, en realidad, se trata de un asesinato político deliberado.
Para los familiares y amigxs de Yelena, su caso sigue sin resolverse aunque la persona sospechosa haya confesado.
En 2013, Rusia aprobó una ley que prohíbe la difusión de lo que describió como "propaganda gay". En 2014, Human Rights Watch publicó un informe al respecto.

Eni Lestari
Biography
Eni Lestari est travailleuse domestique indonésienne à Hong Kong et militante des droits des migrant·e·s. Après avoir échappé à son employeur abusif, elle est passée de victime à mobilisatrice de travailleurs·ses domestiques en particulier, et de travailleurs·ses migrant·e·s plus globalement. En 2000, elle a fondé l'Association of Indonesian Migrant Workers (Association des travailleurs·ses migrant·e·s indonésien·ne·s, ATKI-Hong Kong) qui s'est ensuite étendue à Macao, à Taïwan et en Indonésie. Elle a été coordonnatrice et porte-parole de l'Asia Migrants Coordinating Body (Instance de coordination des migrant·e·s en Asie, AMCB) - une alliance d'organisations de terrain de migrant·e·s à Hong Kong venant d'Indonésie, des Philippines, de Thaïlande, du Népal et du Sri Lanka. Elle est également l'actuelle présidente de l’International Migrants Alliance (Alliance internationale des migrant·e·s), la toute première alliance mondiale de migrant·e·s, d'immigré·e·s, de réfugié·e·s et d'autres personnes déplacées.
Elle a occupé des postes importants dans diverses organisations, en tant que membre actuelle du conseil régional de l’Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development (Forum Asie-Pacifique sur les femmes, le droit et le développement, APWLD), ancienne membre du conseil d'administration de Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women (Alliance mondiale contre la traite des femmes, GAATW), porte-parole du Network of Indonesian Migrant Workers (Réseau des travailleurs·ses migrant·e·s indonésien·ne·s, JBMI), conseillère d’ATKI-Hong Kong et Macao ainsi que de l’Association of Returned Migrants and Families in Indonesia (Association des migrant·e·s et des familles retourné·e·s en Indonésie, KABAR BUMI). Elle a été une personne-ressource impliquée dans des forums organisés par des universitaires, des groupes interreligieux, des sociétés civiles, des syndicats et bien d'autres, à l’échelle nationale, régionale et internationale.
Elle a aussi participé activement aux assemblées/conférences des Nations Unies sur le développement et les droits des migrant·e·s et été choisie comme intervenante pour l'ouverture de l'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies sur les mouvements massifs de migrant·e·s et de réfugié·e·s en 2016 à New York, aux États-Unis. Des nominations et des prix lui ont par ailleurs été décernés, dont celui d’Inspirational Women de BBC 100 Women, ainsi que le prix Public Hero de RCTI, l’Indonesian Club Award et le Non-Profit Leader of Women of Influence de la Chambre américaine de Hong Kong, et celui de Changemaker de Cathay Pacific.

Through labor and union organizing, Sopo, Sabrina and Linda are not only fighting for the rights of essential workers, women workers, migrant workers and sex workers, but the rights of all workers.
The fight to end workers’ exploitation is a feminist struggle, and shows us that there are no feminist economies without feminist unions.
Magaly Quintana
Magaly Quintana était connue de nombreuses personnes au Nicaragua comme « La Maga » (la magicienne). Historienne et activiste féministe, elle était une indéfectible défenseure des droits des femmes, réclamant justice pour les victimes de féminicides.
Magaly était fortement engagée dans la documentation et la collecte de statistiques sur les femmes et les filles tuées dans le cadre de la violence sexuelle dans le pays.
« Elle s’employait à reconstituer la vie de chacune d’entre elles, de leur famille, pour montrer ces vies qui avaient été détruites », Dora María Téllez.
Magaly avait également critiqué le gouvernement pour sa réforme de la loi 779 sur la violence à l’égard des femmes. Résultat du travail acharné des mouvements de femmes nicaraguayens, cette loi incluait – avant sa réforme – d’importantes dispositions criminalisant le féminicide. Elle avançait que les réformes législatives avaient affaibli la loi et restreint la définition des féminicides à des homicides, rendant ainsi « invisibles » les crimes violents perpétrés contre les femmes.
Magaly a commencé à mener des actions féministes au début des années 1980. Directrice du Catholic Women for the Right to Choose, elle a défendu le droit à l’avortement thérapeutique après son interdiction en 2006, de même que soutenu les manifestations contre le gouvernement de Daniel Ortega en 2018.
Née en mai 1952, Magaly est décédée en mai 2019.

Jemimah Naburri-Kaheru
Biography
Jemimah Naburri-Kaheru es una consumada estratega internacional en recursos humanos con gran influencia en la región del Cuerno de África. Anteriormente, se desempeñó como gerente regional de Oficina y Recursos Humanos en Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA, Iniciativa Estratégica para las Mujeres del Cuerno de África). Su influencia se extiende a la dirección de los recursos humanos de más de 70 empleades regionales, debido a que los ingresos anuales de la organización registraron un veloz crecimiento del 40%. A lo largo de su carrera, Jemimah ha organizado iniciativas de reclutamiento sumamente fructíferas, introducido sistemas de desempeño basados en el mérito, y supervisado las relaciones entre el personal y las políticas de recursos humanos. Desempeñó una función crucial brindando apoyo a las estrategias de fuerzas de trabajo globales. Con antecedentes académicos en Estudios sobre el Desarrollo de la Universidad de Makerere (Uganda) y una maestría en Gestión de Recursos Humanos en curso, el compromiso de Jemimah con el desarrollo profesional es más que evidente. Su contribución al alto rendimiento de la fuerza laboral y liderazgo internacional en materia de recursos humanos la convierte en un activo invaluable en cualquier empresa global.
