Confronting Extractivism & Corporate Power

Women human rights defenders (WHRDs) worldwide defend their lands, livelihoods and communities from extractive industries and corporate power. They stand against powerful economic and political interests driving land theft, displacement of communities, loss of livelihoods, and environmental degradation.


Why resist extractive industries?

Extractivism is an economic and political model of development that commodifies nature and prioritizes profit over human rights and the environment. Rooted in colonial history, it reinforces social and economic inequalities locally and globally. Often, Black, rural and Indigenous women are the most affected by extractivism, and are largely excluded from decision-making. Defying these patriarchal and neo-colonial forces, women rise in defense of rights, lands, people and nature.

Critical risks and gender-specific violence

WHRDs confronting extractive industries experience a range of risks, threats and violations, including criminalization, stigmatization, violence and intimidation.  Their stories reveal a strong aspect of gendered and sexualized violence. Perpetrators include state and local authorities, corporations, police, military, paramilitary and private security forces, and at times their own communities.

Acting together

AWID and the Women Human Rights Defenders International Coalition (WHRD-IC) are pleased to announce “Women Human Rights Defenders Confronting Extractivism and Corporate Power”; a cross-regional research project documenting the lived experiences of WHRDs from Asia, Africa and Latin America.

We encourage activists, members of social movements, organized civil society, donors and policy makers to read and use these products for advocacy, education and inspiration.

في الثاني من أيلول/ سبتمير 2021، التمّ شمل مجموعة رائعة من الناشطات النسويات والمناديات بالعدالة الاجتماعية ضمن فعاليات مهرجان (AWID Crear | Résister | Transform). لم يقتصر هدف اجتماعهنّ على مشاركة استراتيجيات المقاومة وعمليات الابتكار الخلّاقة المشتركة التي ترمي إلى تغيير العالم. لقد اجتمعت الناشطات ليتبادلن الغزَل الإباحي على «تويتر». قادت نانا سيكياما النشاط.

نانا من مؤسسي «مغامرات من مضاجع النساء الإفريقيات» وهي كاتبة «حيوات النساء الافريقيات الجنسيّة». لقد جمعت عملها مع عمل المنبر النسائيّ الكويري المنادي بالوحدة الإفريقية (AfroFemHub) للبحث في جواب السؤال التالي: ما هي الصياغات النسوية للرسائل النصّية ذات المحتوى الجنسي؟

أعتقد أن هذا سؤال مهمّ للغاية، لأنه يبحث في القضية الأكبر المتعلّقة بالمقاربة النسوية لكيفية تنقّل المرء في عالم الإنترنت. في ظل الرأسمالية، يمكن للخطاب المُنتَج حول الجسد والجنس، أن يكون مجرّدًا من الإنسانية ومُشوّهًا. كما أن مساحات المتعة الجنسية في الفضاء الافتراضي لها طابع آدائي مبتذل. لذا، فإن البحث عن طرق تُمكّننا من استكشاف رغباتنا باستحسان، يمكن أن تولّد مقاومة للسائد من نماذج العرض والاستهلاك. تباعًا، تُستعاد هذه المساحات كمواقع للتشابك الحَقّ، ويتبيّن أنّ الرسائل النصّية ذات المحتوى الجنسي لا بد وأن تكون نسويّة.

بالإضافة إلى ذلك، فإن السماح للخطاب النسوي بتجسيد وجهه المرِح في فضاء الإنترنت، يساعد على مقارعة السردية الذائعة ومفادها أن التشابك في الفلك النسوي غير مرح وقاسٍ في طابعه العام. ولكن كما نعلم، فإن المتعة والمرح هي من صلب سياستنا وجزء متأصّل مما يعنيه أن يكون المرء نسويًا.

يتبيّن من هذه التويتات الفكاهة المقرونة بالإثارة والاهتياج الجنسيّ، التي تتّسم بها المقاربة النسوية لكتابة الرسائل ذات المضامين الجنسية، دون أن تُسقط عن نفسها الالتزام بالمساواة والعدالة.

Obiageli “Oby” Nwankwo

With a legal career spanning more than 30 years, Oby was known across Africa and around the world as a champion for gender justice and human rights.

She founded and served as Executive Director of the Civil Resource Development and Documentation Centre (CIRDDOC), a Nigerian NGO which sponsors trainings and network-building activities for members of civil society, parliamentarians and other key stakeholders to promote human rights, good governance and access to justice and rule of law.

Oby is remembered fondly by activists in Nigeria as an “extraordinary activist who displayed energy and passion towards the fight for gender equality and gender justice in Nigeria and across Africa.”

Leila Hessini

Biography

Leila is a transnational feminist leader, strategist, and advisor with over 25 years of organizing, advocacy and philanthropic experience advancing human rights, gender equality, and sexual and reproductive rights and justice.  She was born in Algeria and educated in the U.S., France, and Morocco; over her professional career, she has lived and worked in forty countries across Africa, Europe, Latin America and Asia.  Leila currently serves as a Senior International Fellow at the Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon and as Senior Strategist for various feminist movements and organizations as well as the the Urgent Action Fund-Africa and Trust Africa on an initiative on Reimagining Feminist and Pan-African Philanthropies.
 
From 2017-2023, Leila held the position as Vice-President of Programs at Global Fund for Women where she oversaw its strategic grantmaking, movement-strengthening, global advocacy and philanthropic collaborations. At GFW, she doubled its grantmaking to over $17 million, launched its feminist and gender-based movements and crises work, created an adolescent girls program led by a girls’ advisory council and led its philanthropic advocacy work.  Prior to that she served on the senior leadership team of Ipas from 2002 to 2016 where she published extensively on abortion rights and justice, lead global advocacy efforts and partnered with feminist groups working on self-management, community strategies and stigma reduction around bodily integrity and sexual and reproductive rights.
 
Leila is currently researching shifts in the philanthropic sector including recognizing non-institutional practices of giving resources in the Global South and efforts to decolonize practices in the Global North.  She has written extensively on the political nature of veiling across North Africa and the Middle East, abortion practices in majority Muslim contexts and feminist approaches to sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice.
 
Leila holds an MPH in public health and a MA in Middle Eastern and North African Studies, studied Islamic law in Morocco and pursued doctoral studies in sociology in France. She studied Arabic and speaks French and English fluently.  She is a mother of two feminist young women, an avid scuba diver, mountain bike rider, skier, and outdoor enthusiast.

#MeToo en China

La exhibición «#MeToo in China» fue inaugurada en 2019 y recorrió cinco ciudades. Su objetivo es dar mayor prominencia a las experiencias personales de lxs víctimas y lxs activistas, para inspirar al público a unirse a la lucha a través del contacto con estas historias. La exposición misma se ha convertido en parte de la lucha #MeToo: ha debido enfrentar desafíos en su itinerario por toda China y, en más de una ocasión, fue amenazada con la clausura.

Laura Lee

Laura fue una abogada y líder activista que luchó valientemente por la descriminalización del trabajo sexual en Irlanda.

Es recordada como «una combatiente por la libertad de lxs trabajadorxs sexuales, una feminista, una madre para su hija y una amiga necesaria para mucha gente».

Laura promovió el reconocimiento de las personas de la industria del sexo como trabajadorxs merecedorxs de derechos. Presentó demandas por la descriminalización, e inició una revisión judicial en la Corte Suprema de Belfast respecto de las provisiones que criminalizan la compra de servicios sexuales. Declaró que su intención era llevar el caso a la Corte Europea de Derechos Humanos.

 


 

Laura Lee, Ireland

Fatima Qureshi

Biography

Culturellement nomade, née à Hong Kong et enracinée dans un héritage turco-pakistanais, l'amour de Fatima pour les récits - tant pour les lire que pour les cocréer - a alimenté sa passion pour l'activisme à travers la communication. Forte de sa formation en journalisme, Fatima a travaillé pendant 7 ans dans les domaines de la communication numérique et médiatique avec des ONG qui offrent des opportunités d'éducation et de l’aide juridique aux réfugié·e·s et demandeur·se·s d'asile, ainsi qu'avec le mouvement féministe musulman qui applique une perspective féministe et fondée sur les droits dans la compréhension et la quête d’égalité et de justice au sein de la tradition juridique musulmane. Elle rédige régulièrement des tribunes sur les questions féministes dans les pays du Sud.

Grâce à la narration dans cette ère ultra digitale des réseaux sociaux, Fatima continue de collaborer avec des animateur·rice·s communautaires et des activistes de terrain pour créer du contenu audiovisuel dans le but de cultiver des ponts de compréhension vers la libération collective et la décolonisation. Les jours où elle ne travaille pas, elle regarde attentivement des films féministes indépendants venant d’Iran, du Maroc et du Pakistan, et les autres jours elle interprète de la poésie orale avec ses camarades à Kuala Lumpur.

Ika Vantiani est une artiste, conservatrice et créatrice indonésienne basée à Jakarta. Ses œuvres explorent l'idée d'être une femme dans la société d'aujourd'hui où médias et consommation sont inextricablement liés. Deborah Holmes

Jusqu’à son décès, à la suite d’une lutte brève mais agressive contre le cancer, Deborah était la directrice de la communication et de la mobilisation au Women’s funding network (le réseau de financement des femmes), WFN.

Entre 2008 et 2017, elle avait également travaillé auprès du Fonds mondial pour les femmes. Deborah était extrêmement appréciée et respectée par le conseil d'administration, l’équipe et les partenaires du Fonds mondial pour les femmes.

Kavita Ramdas, ex-PDG a déclaré, à juste titre, que Deborah était « la combinaison unique d’un être mêlant chaleur, générosité, intelligence et style, avec un engagement passionné pour faire fusionner la beauté et la justice. Elle avait compris le pouvoir des histoires. Le pouvoir de la voix des femmes. Le pouvoir de l'expérience vécue. Le pouvoir de renaître de ses cendres et de dire aux autres que c'était possible. Et nous continuons à nous relever. »

Musimbi Kanyoro, l'actuelle PDG du Fonds mondial pour les femmes, a ajouté: « Nous avons perdu une sœur et sa vie illumine des valeurs qui nous unissent et nous inspirent tou-te-s. Alors que nous sommes tou-te-s réuni-e-s pour pleurer le décès de Deborah, souvenons-nous et célébrons sa vie remarquable, audacieuse et passionnée. »

Sue Hoya Sellars

Sue was an artist, activist and teacher born in 1936 in Maryland, USA.

Sue created art for women, about women. As a lesbian feminist, and for a time, a separatist, she was committed to creating women-only spaces. In 1976 she purchased land that is still held by women who visit to make art. Sue took a fierce stand on the protection of women and girls.

With her groundbreaking futuristic, classical and anthropological approach, she filled any room she entered with intellect, authentic eccentricity, unforgiving wit, and humor.  Her ideas about consciousness and creativity continue to inspire many people.
