AWID Forum: Co-creating Feminist Futures
In September 2016, the 13th AWID international Forum brought together in Brazil over 1800 feminists and women’s rights advocates in a spirit of resistance and resilience.
This section highlights the gains, learnings and resources that came out of our rich conversations. We invite you to explore, share and comment!
What has happened since 2016?
One of the key takeaways from the 2016 Forum was the need to broaden and deepen our cross-movement work to address rising fascisms, fundamentalisms, corporate greed and climate change.
With this in mind, we have been working with multiple allies to grow these seeds of resistance:
- Our Seed Initiatives, has helped 20 ideas that emerged at the Forum to grow into concrete actions
- The video “Defending people and planet” and guide “Weaving resistance through action” put courageous WHRDs in the spotlight and present concrete strategies they use to confront corporate power.
- With our animations about the State of Our Feminist Movements and Climate and Environmental Justice, movements now have creative tools to support their advocacy work.
- The compiling artistic expressions of our #MovementsMatter series continues to inspire stronger and more creative organizing around the world.
- Movements can also benefit from new methodologies on Visioning Feminist Futures (Coming up soon!)
And through our next strategic plan and Forum process, we are committed to keep developing ideas and deepen the learnings ignited at the 2016 Forum.
What happens now?
The world is a much different place than it was a year ago, and it will continue to change.
The next AWID Forum will take place in the Asia Pacific region (exact location and dates to be announced in 2018).

About the AWID Forum
AWID Forums started in 1983, in Washington DC. Since then, the event has grown to become many things to many peoples: an iterative process of sharpening our analyses, vision and actions; a watershed moment that reinvigorates participants’ feminisms and energizes their organizing; and a political home for women human rights defenders to find sanctuary and solidarity.

Tshegofatso Senne
Biography
Tshegofatso Senne is a Black, chronically-ill, genderqueer community worker and sangoma who does the most. They’re a hobby collector currently fixated on ceramics and a cat dad to Donkey and Ginji. Their community platform Hedone brings people together to explore and understand the power of trauma-awareness and pleasure in their daily lives. While much of their work is grounded in communications, facilitation, and healing, they enjoy working with young people across the continent, hosting workshops, and mentoring them around issues of pleasure and liberation, using creativity and storytelling as fractal solutions to social injustices. Their TEDx talk ‘Reimagining BDSM’ looks at the tenderness and love that reveals itself in a lifestyle often only seen through an extreme lens. Tshegofatso believes deeply in the individual and collective potential of regenerative and sustainable change, pleasure and care work.

Pendant des décennies, les universitaires et défenseur·euse·s féministes ont développé d’importantes notions liées au genre afin de comprendre et combattre l’oppression et la discrimination. Ces notions sont maintenant devenues la cible d’acteur·ice·s antidroits qui prétendent que les rôles de genre patriarcaux oppressifs relèvent du « bon sens », peignant stratégiquement toutes les autres idées, normes culturelles et formes de vie sociale comme une idéologie dangereuse et conspirationniste.

Biography
Valerie acumula ocho años de conocimiento experto en las áreas del desarrollo de las comunicaciones, la promoción digital y la investigación social. Sus responsabilidades en AWID incluyen la organización de una experiencia innovadora, atractiva y exitosa para el Foro Híbrido, un nuevo componente del 15º Foro Internacional de AWID. Antes de incorporarse a AWID, trabajó en Women Deliver como asesora de diálogos globales y punto focal de convocatorias regionales. Valerie tiene sumo interés en los eventos digitales e híbridos, algunos de los eventos globales que ha llevado a buen término son los siguientes: Cumbre Mundial de la Juventud, Liga Internacional de Mujeres por la Paz y la Libertad (Congreso Global) y Plan International Deutschland (presentación del proyecto JF-CPiE). Valerie es, además, autora del libro Relationship Literacy: Wider lessons from young single mothers in Nairobi slums (Alfabetización en relaciones: lecciones de jóvenes madres solteras en barrios marginados de Nairobi), obra que busca amplificar las voces y las vivencias de las jóvenes madres solteras. Posee una maestría en Planificación y Gestión de Proyectos de la Universidad de Nairobi y una licenciatura en Comunicación Social de la Universidad Católica de África Oriental. Cuando lleguen al centro de São Paulo, verán el edificio de la Ocupação 9 de Julho, un sitio prominente en la lucha por la vivienda social y un importante espacio cultural. Este es el trabajo del Movimiento de Trabajadores Sin Hogar (Movimento dos Sem-Teto do Centro, MSTC), un movimiento de más de 2000 personas que actúa en el centro de la ciudad y convierte espacios abandonados en viviendas para trabajadorxs de bajos ingresos, niñxs, mujeres, adultos, ancianxs, migrantes y refugiadxs. En este edificio en particular, brindan comida y albergue a 122 familias.

So'oalo Roger
So'oalo was a fervent human rights advocate, especially pertaining to the rights of the LGBTQI community in the Pacific.
She was a member of the Samoa Fa’afafine Association (SFA) and a passionate advocate for the acknowledgement of a third gender in the island country. Under her leadership, the SFA pushed for the recognition of the validity and rights of the fa’afafine community.
She was also a pioneer in articulating the links between human rights, exploitation of fa’afafines in Samoa and the Pacific, and the health, wellbeing and security of the LGBTQI community.
She was an inspiration, a visionary and her dedication to the pursuit of rights for her community is admirable and will be remembered.
