Over the past few years, a troubling new trend at the international human rights level is being observed, where discourses on ‘protecting the family’ are being employed to defend violations committed against family members, to bolster and justify impunity, and to restrict equal rights within and to family life.
The campaign to "Protect the Family" is driven by ultra-conservative efforts to impose "traditional" and patriarchal interpretations of the family, and to move rights out of the hands of family members and into the institution of ‘the family’.
Since 2014, a group of states have been operating as a bloc in human rights spaces under the name “Group of Friends of the Family”, and resolutions on “Protection of the Family” have been successfully passed every year since 2014.
This agenda has spread beyond the Human Rights Council. We have seen regressive language on “the family” being introduced at the Commission on the Status of Women, and attempts made to introduce it in negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals.
AWID works with partners and allies to jointly resist “Protection of the Family” and other regressive agendas, and to uphold the universality of human rights.
In response to the increased influence of regressive actors in human rights spaces, AWID joined allies to form the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). OURs is a collaborative project that monitors, analyzes, and shares information on anti-rights initiatives like “Protection of the Family”.
Rights at Risk, the first OURs report, charts a map of the actors making up the global anti-rights lobby, identifies their key discourses and strategies, and the effect they are having on our human rights.
The report outlines “Protection of the Family” as an agenda that has fostered collaboration across a broad range of regressive actors at the UN. It describes it as: “a strategic framework that houses “multiple patriarchal and anti-rights positions, where the framework, in turn, aims to justify and institutionalize these positions.”

Jemimah Naburri-Kaheru is an accomplished international HR strategist with a profound impact within the Horn of Africa Region. Her influence extends to HR leadership for over 70 regional staff, as the organization experienced rapid growth with a 40% increase in annual revenues. Throughout her career, Jemimah has orchestrated successful recruitment efforts, introduced merit-based performance systems, and overseen employee relations and HR policies.. She played a pivotal role in supporting global workforce strategies. With an academic background in Development Studies from Makerere University (Uganda) and an ongoing MBA in Human Resource Management, Jemimah's commitment to professional development is evident. Her contribution to high-performance workforces and international HR leadership positions her as an invaluable asset to any global enterprise.

Ekaete Judith Umoh es una defensora internacional de los derechos de las personas con discapacidad y experta en desarrollo inclusivo, con un agudo análisis de las cuestiones relativas al género, la discapacidad y el desarrollo inclusivo. Su sueño es aumentar la visibilidad de las mujeres y niñas con discapacidad dentro del movimiento feminista internacional y en todos las iniciativas para el desarrollo en el mundo.
Ekaete disfruta con el activismo y la política, y llegó a convertirse en la primera mujer elegida presidenta de la Asociación Nacional Conjunta de Personas con Discapacidad -JONAPWD(www.jonapwd.org ), en Nigeria, donde lideró a organizaciones por los derechos de las personas con discapacidad en las luchas por convertir en ley el Proyecto de Ley de Prohibición de la Discriminación contra las Personas con Discapacidad en Nigeria, tras más de 17 años de trabajo constante de incidencia. Posteriormente, se incorporó a CBM Global como Directora de País pionera y dirigió su equipo durante unos tres años, contribuyendo a acabar con el círculo de pobreza y discapacidad en Nigeria. Aparte del activismo en defensa de las personas con discapacidad, Ekaete ha trabajado como consultora para varias agencias de desarrollo, proporcionando asistencia técnica sobre la inclusión de la discapacidad en el diseño de programas y proyectos.

Alejandra es una apasionada de los derechos de las mujeres y la justicia de género. Sueña con crear un mundo centrado en el cuidado de las personas y de la naturaleza. Como experta feminista en derechos humanos, ha trabajado en las intersecciones de la justicia de género, climática, social y económica en varias organizaciones internacionales. Reflects on the funding ecosystem and trends impacting feminist, women’s rights, gender justice, LBTQI+ and allied movements regionally and globally
Lorsque vous arriverez au centre-ville de São Paulo, vous verrez le bâtiment Ocupação 9 de Julho (Occupation de l’Avenue du 9 Juillet), un espace culturel et un site important dans la lutte pour le logement social.
C'est le travail du Mouvement des Travailleur·euses Sans-Abri (Movimento dos Sem-Teto do Centro, MSTC), un mouvement de plus de 2000 personnes qui agit dans le centre-ville et convertit les espaces abandonnés en logements pour les travailleur·euses à faible revenu, les enfants, femmes, adultes, personnes âgées, migrant·e·s et réfugié·e·s. Dans ce bâtiment en particulier, 122 familles sont nourries et logées.

Black women community organizing in the Cauca Valley in Colombia can be traced back to the country's colonial past, which is marked by the racism, patriarchy, and capitalism that sustained slavery as a means to exploit the region’s rich soils. These organizers are the heroines of a broad movement for black autonomy - one that fights for the sustainable use of the region's forests and natural resources as vital to their culture and livelihood.
For 25 years, the Association of Afro-Descendant Women of the Northern Cauca (Asociación de Mujeres Afrodescendientes del Norte del Cauca, ASOM) has been dedicated to bringing power to Afro-Colombian women’s organizing in northern Cauca.
They became established in 1997 as a response to ongoing human rights violations, the absence of public policies, inadequate management of natural resources, and the lack of opportunities for women in the territory.
They have forged the struggle to secure ethnic-territorial rights, to end violence against women, and gain recognition of women’s roles change-making peace-building in Colombia.
