Protection of the Family
The Issue
Over the past few years, a troubling new trend at the international human rights level is being observed, where discourses on ‘protecting the family’ are being employed to defend violations committed against family members, to bolster and justify impunity, and to restrict equal rights within and to family life.
The campaign to "Protect the Family" is driven by ultra-conservative efforts to impose "traditional" and patriarchal interpretations of the family, and to move rights out of the hands of family members and into the institution of ‘the family’.
“Protection of the Family” efforts stem from:
- rising traditionalism,
- rising cultural, social and religious conservatism and
- sentiment hostile to women’s human rights, sexual rights, child rights and the rights of persons with non-normative gender identities and sexual orientations.
Since 2014, a group of states have been operating as a bloc in human rights spaces under the name “Group of Friends of the Family”, and resolutions on “Protection of the Family” have been successfully passed every year since 2014.
This agenda has spread beyond the Human Rights Council. We have seen regressive language on “the family” being introduced at the Commission on the Status of Women, and attempts made to introduce it in negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our Approach
AWID works with partners and allies to jointly resist “Protection of the Family” and other regressive agendas, and to uphold the universality of human rights.
In response to the increased influence of regressive actors in human rights spaces, AWID joined allies to form the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). OURs is a collaborative project that monitors, analyzes, and shares information on anti-rights initiatives like “Protection of the Family”.
Rights at Risk, the first OURs report, charts a map of the actors making up the global anti-rights lobby, identifies their key discourses and strategies, and the effect they are having on our human rights.
The report outlines “Protection of the Family” as an agenda that has fostered collaboration across a broad range of regressive actors at the UN. It describes it as: “a strategic framework that houses “multiple patriarchal and anti-rights positions, where the framework, in turn, aims to justify and institutionalize these positions.”

The Nadia Echazú Textile Cooperative carries the name of a pioneer in the struggle for trans rights in Argentina. In many ways, the work of the cooperative celebrates her life and legacy.
Nadia Echazú had a remarkable activist trajectory: she was one of the co-founders of "El Teje", the first trans newspaper in Latin America, alongside Lohana Berkins, Diana Sacayán and Marlene Wayar. Nadia was part of the Argentinian Association of Travestis, Transexual and Transgender people (Asociación de Travestis y Transexuales de Argentina, ATTA) and founded The Organization of Travestis and Transgender People of Argentina (Organización de Travestis y Transexuales de Argentina, OTTRA).
Shortly after her death, her fellow activists founded the cooperative in her name, to honor the deep mark she left on trans and travesti activism in Argentina.

As part of AWID’s Feminist Realities journey, we invite you to explore our newly launched Feminist Film Club: a collection of short and feature films selected by feminist curators and storytellers from around the world, including Jess X. Snow (Asia/Pacific), Gabrielle Tesfaye (Africa/African Diaspora), and Esra Ozban (South West Asia, North Africa). Alejandra Laprea is curating the Latin & Central American program, which we’ll launch in September during AWID’s Crear, Résister, Transform: A Festival for Feminist Movements. In the meantime, look out for announcements on special films screenings and conversations with filmmakers!
Feminist Alternatives Project
As feminists many of us feel frustrated as we lurch from one political ‘moment’ to another; our work constrained by the parameters of organisational mandates, funding trends or political agendas, our time spent arguing over the need for gender analysis rather than building alliances for change.
The Gender & Development Network’s project on Feminist Alternatives provides space to consider what is important, to listen deeply to others and to accept challenges to our assumptions. Transformative progress towards feminist societies requires fundamental change that is context-specific, recognising intersectionality, the multiplicity of feminism, and the pivotal role of women’s collective action.
Rather than attempt to write a single paper, we have therefore produced a collection of thought pieces from academics, activists and practitioners around the world – not to suggest that we have the answers, but rather to encourage and provoke debate with the hope that more articles can be added in the future.
We are delighted to link our collection to AWID’s Feminist Propositions for a Just Economy.

Originaire d'Inde, Janette était une personne formidable, fougueuse, bienveillante et aimante.
Son intolérance à l’égard de l’injustice et sa ferme volonté de défendre les droits de toutes les personnes l’ont amenée à travailler pour TARSHI (une ONG qui travaille sur la sexualité et la santé sexuelle et reproductive) pendant plus de 15 ans. Janette a géré et dirigé avec compétence les aspects financiers, les ressources humaines et les aspects opérationnels de TARSHI, naviguant adroitement dans la bureaucratie labyrinthique à laquelle sont soumises les ONG indiennes.
Son équipe se souvient « elle assurait nos arrières pour que nous puissions naviguer en eaux libres. Femme aux multiples talents, Janette nous a non seulement aidés à acquérir nos propres bureaux, mais elles les a également aménagés pour leur utilisation optimale. Elle aimait les voyages et les animaux et s'intéressait à la thérapie assistée par les animaux ».

Actores principales de la oposición
Estamos presenciando un nivel de participación sin precedentes de actores anti-derechos en los espacios internacionales de derechos humanos. Para reforzar su impacto y amplificar sus voces, estxs actores se dedican cada vez más a la construcción de alianzas tácticas que atraviesan sectores, fronteras regionales y nacionales y credos religiosos.
Esta «alianza non-santa» conformada por actores conservadores de tradición religiosa católica, evangélica, mormona, ortodoxa rusa y musulmana, ha encontrado una causa común en una serie de discursos compartidos y acciones de incidencia que intentan hacer retroceder los logros de lxs feministas y del movimiento de derechos sexuales a nivel internacional.

Actividades principales: La «Santa Sede», como gobierno de la iglesia católica romana, utiliza su condición singular de estado Observador Permanente en la ONU para ejercer presión a favor de nociones conservadoras, patriarcales y heteronormativas de la feminidad, las identidades de género o «la familia» y para difundir políticas contra el aborto y la anticoncepción.

Actividades principales: Se describe a sí misma como la «voz colectiva del mundo musulmán» y actúa como un bloque de estados en los escenarios de la ONU. La OIC intenta crear lagunas en la protección de los derechos humanos a partir de referencias a la religión, la cultura o la soberanía nacional. - Actividades principales: La iglesia ortodoxa rusa, capitalizando sus estrechos vínculos con el Estado ruso, ha actuado como un agente promotor de cambios en las normas en debates internacionales sobre derechos humanos. Rusia y su iglesia ortodoxa han cooptado el lenguaje de los derechos para poner el acento en la «moralidad» y en los «valores tradicionales» como supuestas fuentes principales de los derechos humanos. Rusia lideró una serie de resoluciones sobre «valores tradicionales» ante el Consejo de Derechos Humanos y es la primera en presentar enmiendas hostiles a las resoluciones progresistas en áreas como la mortalidad materna, la protección del espacio para la sociedad civil y el derecho a la protesta pacífica.

Laura Pollán
Kate McInturff
From Peacebuild to the Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action, Amnesty International, and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA), Kate had a lifelong passion for women’s rights and gender equality and dedicated her career to fighting inequality and making the world a more compassionate place.
Kate was a member of the Coordinating Committee of Social Watch and a contributor to the Canadian National Social Watch reports. As a Senior Researcher at the CCPA, Kate received national acclaim for researching, writing, and producing the annual “The Best and Worst Places to be a Woman in Canada” report.
Kate died peacefully surrounded by her family, following a three-year battle with colon cancer. She is described by loved ones as a “Funny, Fearless, Unapologetically Feminist.”

Lxs fundamentalistas religiosos están cada vez más presentes y coordinados en políticas locales, nacionales y regionales. Su incursión arremete contra la vida y la salud de niñas, adolescentes y mujeres, los derechos de la niñez, la libertad de religión y los derechos de las personas LGBTI entre otros.

Madiha fue una destacada profesora de Sociología con activa participación en la sociedad civil como defensora de los derechos de las mujeres en la región árabe.
Presidió la Alianza para las Mujeres Árabes y dentro del Consejo Nacional de Mujeres fue miembro del Comité de la Sociedad Civil y del Comité para el Desarrollo de la Gobernación de Minia. Fue autora de numerosas publicaciones en las que analizó y arrojó luz sobre las desigualdades de género y la discriminación contra las mujeres.
Es recordada con cariño por colegas, estudiantes y amigxs.
