Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations
-
Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

How do you define external funding?
External funding includes grants and other forms of funding from philanthropic foundations, governments, bilateral, multilateral or corporate funders and individual donors – from both within your country or abroad. It excludes resources that groups, organizations and/or movements generate autonomously such as, for example, membership fees, the voluntary contributions of staff, members and/or supporters, community fundraisers, venue hires or sale of services. For ease and clarity, definitions of the different types of funding as well as short descriptions of different donors are included in the survey.
Elina Margarita Castillo Jiménez
Biography
Elina est une jeune avocate des droits humains afro-dominicaine et féministe intersectionnelle, engagée à utiliser sa voix et ses compétences pour construire un monde plus juste, empathique et inclusif. Elle a commencé la faculté de droit à 16 ans, convaincue que cela lui donnerait les outils nécessaires pour comprendre et promouvoir la justice sociale. Après un JD (doctorat en droit) en République dominicaine, elle a poursuivi un LL.M. (maîtrise en droit) en droit international public et droits humains au Royaume-Uni en tant que boursière Chevening. Seule femme latino-caribéenne de sa classe, elle a obtenu son diplôme avec distinction.
Elina a travaillé à l'intersection des droits humains, du genre, de la migration et de la politique et ceci à plusieurs niveaux : des instances étatiques aux collectifs de base aux organisations internationales. Elle a aidé à plaider des cas de violence sexiste devant la Cour interaméricaine des droits de l'homme. En tant que membre du Groupe consultatif des jeunes du FNUAP, elle a contribué au renforcement des droits sexuels et reproductifs en République dominicaine. Elle a codirigé la première campagne d'Amnesty International sur les droits des travailleur.euse.s du sexe dans les Amériques, développant des partenariats solides avec des organisations dirigées par des travailleur.euse.s du sexe et utilisant la position d'Amnesty pour amplifier la voix des femmes défenseurs des droits humains et des travailleur.euse.s du sexe. Elina fait partie de Foro Feminista Magaly Pineda et de la Global Shapers Community. Elle parle espagnol, français et anglais.
Grâce à la richesse de son expérience, Elina apporte à l’AWID de solides compétences de gouvernance et de planification stratégique et un savoir-faire éprouvé en matière de mécanismes des Nations Unies et des droits humains régionaux. Elle affirme également très clairement sa détermination à continuer de faire de l’AWID une organisation inclusive pour toutes les femmes, et particulièrement les jeunes féministes et celles des Caraïbes. C’est avec la diversité de ces apports qu’Elina rejoint une sororité de féministes internationales qui ont du mordant. Elle pourra continuer à y développer son leadership féministe, pour ne plus jamais se sentir seule dans cette voie.

The AWID Forum Access Fund
We strive to make the AWID Forum a truly global gathering with participation from a diverse array of movements, regions and generations. To this end, AWID mobilizes resources for a limited Access Fund (AF) to assist some participants with the costs of attending the Forum.
The 14th AWID International Forum will take place 11-14 January 2021, in Taipei, Taiwan.
How will the Access Fund be allocated?
For this AWID Forum, there will be no application process.
Access Fund grants will be allocated by invitation only to:
- Two persons per activity selected for the Forum program (decided by those organizations, groups or individuals organizing the activity)
- Participants who identify as part of Priority Forum Constituencies (PFCs) recommended by the organizations, networks and groups who are co-creating the Forum with AWID.
- PFCs are those which we consider would strengthen our collective power as movements, are not centered in mainstream feminist movements, and whose Feminist Realities we would like to honor, celebrate and visibilize:
- Black feminists
- Indigenous feminists
- Trans, gender non-conforming and intersex feminists
- Feminists with disabilities
- Feminist sex workers and informal workers, including migrant workers
- Feminists affected by migration
- Women affected by drug policy
- Feminists from the Forum regions (with a focus on the Pacific and mainland China)
In addition, AWID will fund approximately 100 participants from the Forum’s location. Forum Committee Members (Content and Methodology, Access and Host) as well as those in the Artists Working Group [link] are also granted Access Fund support.
What does the Access Fund cover?
For selected participants, the Access Fund will cover the cost of their:
- Flight
- Accommodation
- Visa
- Local transportation in Taipei
- Travel medical insurance
The Access Fund will NOT cover their:
- Forum registration fee
- Transportation to and from the airport in their city of departure
- Other incidental costs

Biography
Jessica is a queer artist- activist from Toronto, Canada, but is currently based in Bulgaria. Jessica has over 15 years experience in the HIV response working at the intersections of gender and HIV with key populations (sex workers, women who use drugs, LGBTQI communities, incarcerated people and of course people living with HIV). Jessica loves movement building and thinking/taking/strategizing about arts-based interventions. One fun project she started in 2013 was LOVE POSITIVE WOMEN that engages over 125 community groups and organizations globally every February 1-14th to celebrate women living with HIV in their communities.

The co-creation of our feminist realities starts with ourselves and how we treat each other. We are dedicated to creating and protecting safe and supportive spaces for our communities both online and in person. We also consider that safe and welcoming spaces are co-owned and co-created. We expect our members to act in a manner that is ethical, responsible and consistent with the values of AWID and assume collective responsibility to ensure an atmosphere of mutual respect and solidarity.
Weekly Prompts:
As part of our ongoing discussions, we will offer weekly prompts in Slack with the intention to gently facilitate dialogue and inspire art-making processes. This can be an introspective process, but to make the most out of this community, we welcome you to interact with other community members and share thoughts as part of our discussions. The intention is to invite folks to respond freely and gradually by writing or making art in whatever way feels best.
We hope to have relevant and timely discussions with you, so we invite your suggestions and feedback. In general, the themes will center the experiences and perspectives of artists, writers, and creators -- and they will make space for folks to vision into and beyond the current global climate through the lens of feminist realities.

Biography
Durante sus 38 años de carrera, Debbie Stothard ha trabajado con diferentes comunidades y activistas para involucrar en los derechos humanos y la justicia a los Estados, organizaciones intergubernamentales y otras partes interesadas a lo largo de Asia, África, Europa y las Américas. Su trabajo está enfocado en las prioridades temáticas de las empresas y en los derechos humanos, en la prevención de las atrocidades y en el liderazgo de las mujeres. Por ello, ha sido facilitadora o persona de referencia en casi 300 eventos de capacitación durante los últimos 15 años. La mayoría fueron talleres orientados a las bases, desarrollados en el terreno, centrados en la incidencia en derechos humanos, alfabetización económica, en empresas y derechos humanos, y en justicia transicional y prevención de las atrocidades. Su trabajo en justicia transicional y prevención de las atrocidades ha estado enfocado principalmente en Burma/Myanmar, aunque también ha proveído asesoramiento para responder a situaciones de otros países alrededor del mundo.
Entre 1981 y 1996, Debbie trabajó como periodista especializada en crímenes, activista estudiantil, analista política, académica, consejera de gobierno y proveedora de comida en Malasia y Australia, mientras era voluntaria en causas de derechos humanos. En 1996, fundó ALTSEAN-Burma, que encabezó una variedad de programas de innovación y empoderamiento en derechos humanos. Liliana was a teacher, a weaver, and a well recognized writer from Argentina.
Her trilogy La saga de los confines received several awards and is unique in the fantasy genre for its use and re-imagining of South American Indigenous mythology.
Liliana’s commitment to feminism was expressed in the diverse, rich and strong women voices in her writing, and particularly in her extensive work for young readers. She also took public positions in favour of abortion, economic justice and gender parity.

Un ciclo de cine sobre realidades feministas de África y la diáspora africana

Cuando creé mi cortometraje animado The Water Will Carry Us Home [El agua nos llevará a casa], mi mente estaba conectada con un mundo mágico de resiliencia intrépida y sirenas ancestrales que transformaban sus cicatrices más profundas en una nueva generación de vida. Ambientada durante la época del comercio de esclavxs transatlántico, sentí el impulso de mostrar esta historia de esclavización africana en forma diferente de cómo se la ha mostrado siempre en pantalla. Quería dar a mis ancestrxs la conmemoración que nunca recibieron. Mi motivación era recuperar la historia que continúa pintándonos como víctimas impotentes. Esencialmente, quería contar la verdad. Recuperar y reimaginar nuestra historia y nuestra perspectiva significa sanar simultáneamente nuestros traumas generacionales, que existen todavía hoy. Este importante trabajo es lo que están haciendo hoy tantas mujeres a través del continente africano y la diáspora africana, encendiendo nuestras realidades feministas colectivas.
Para hacer la película investigué religiosamente y, en lo que estaba escrito, vi lo que faltaba. Muchas veces sentí que estaba chocando contra una pared, al tratar de encontrar algo que no estaba ahí, y fue en esos espacios anulados en los que me di cuenta de que lxs narradorxs de hoy están llenando esos vacíos. El cortometraje documental Women Hold Up the Sky [Las mujeres sostienen el cielo], creada por la WoMin African Alliance, cuenta la historia de mujeres activistas de Uganda y la República Democrática del Congo que están reclamando activamente sus derechos sobre la tierra, que se ven amenazados en sus hogares por la minería y otras industrias extractivas. La película no solo expone la corrupción del extractivismo, sino que finalmente muestra lo que nos ha estado faltando en las pantallas: cómo las mujeres africanas de las bases se están organizando activamente, formulando estrategias y realizando análisis dentro de sus comunidades para crear alternativas centradas en las mujeres e impulsadas por la comunidad. Pumzi, creada por la cineasta aclamada por la crítica, Wanuri Kahiu, vincula África con la ciencia ficción en torno al clima y el ambientalismo. Pumzi imagina un mundo futurista en el cual la humanidad ha sido forzada a establecerse en otro planeta. Si bien Pumzi parece superficialmente afrofuturista y nueva para África, Kahiu muestra la verdad: que la ciencia ficción y la fantasía siempre existieron en la narrativa africana, pero nunca fueron reconocidos. Kahiu crea un mundo donde las mujeres son las buscadoras de la verdad y las heroínas que nos abren el camino hacia un nuevo mundo, lo opuesto a las imágenes que colocan a lxs africanxs como víctimas de la guerra y la destrucción. El largometraje de nuestro programa, Finding Sally [Encontrando a Sally], está ambientado en la Etiopía de la década de 1970, en la época de la guerra del Terror Rojo, y documenta la impactante historia de Sally Dawit, la tía activista de la directora Tamara Mariam Dawit. A lo largo de la película, vemos el increíble viaje de Sally, como activista joven y valiente que transita uno de los períodos más violentos de la historia de Etiopía. La historia de Sally no solo revela la gravedad de esta época: refleja también su propia evolución personal como mujer joven. De manera intencional, Dawit realiza la película a través de la perspectiva de las mujeres, sin utilizar voces masculinas. Estas películas se han convertido en parte de mi propia psiquis, empoderándome para continuar construyendo alternativas poderosas, para lograr la justicia desde adentro. Afirman que soy una mujer en un mundo de mujeres, que sostienen los cielos y crean activamente realidades feministas indestructibles. Estas películas son más que historias de mujeres africanas: permiten identificarse con ellas, inspirarse en ellas, y son ejemplos de realidades feministas para todxs nosotrxs, en todo el mundo.
