WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.
The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.
Risks and threats targeting WHRDs
WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.
By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:
Physical assault and death
Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
Judicial harassment and criminalization
Burnout
A collaborative, holistic approach to safety
We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership
to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk
We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:
emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles
Our Actions
We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.
Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to strengthen responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.
Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;
Increasing the visibility and recognition of WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:
Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.
Umyra Ahmad is a Malaysian feminist with a background in international and regional advocacy, and human rights education. In AWID, she works on advancing rights related to gender and sexuality at the UN. Prior to joining, she was a programme officer at IWRAW Asia Pacific, where she supported regional, national and grassroots organizations in using UN treaty body mechanisms as a tool for state accountability and access to justice. In Malaysia, she works with queer and refugee collectives and supports coordination of various mutual aid initiatives.

Where does the project come from?
We believe that the economy, the market, the financial system and the premises upon which they are built are critical areas of feminist struggle. Thus, our vision for a just economy goes beyond promoting women’s rights and empowerment in the market, to evaluating the role of gendered oppressions in shaping economic arrangements and transforming these to ensure gender and economic justice.
Process
We are neither starting from zero, nor alone in this attempt to put forward feminist propositions for a just economy. Many of the propositions herein have been advanced or exist in practice within diverse communities challenging and resisting the mainstream market and growth-based economic systems.
It is also very important to note that there is growing awareness of the fact that micro solutions are not always the answer to macro problems, even if they represent important spaces for resistance and movement building and that there may be limitations to particular alternatives to address the injustices of the current capitalist system at a global scale.
Goals
However, feminist alternatives for a just economy are critical to create dents in the system and draw lessons for transformative systemic change. Here we cannot presume to offer a comprehensive nor a complete account on how to create a just feminist economic model, or even models. But we can, but rather draw from cross-movement dialogue with trade unions, environmental, rural and peasants movements, to articulate the propositions for the journey towards this vision.
What do we want to change?
The neoliberal model driving the global economy has repeatedly demonstrated its inability to address the root causes of poverty, inequalities, and exclusion. Neoliberalism, and has in fact contributed to the very creation and exacerbation of these injustices.
Characterized by globalisation, liberalization, privatisation, financialisation and conditional aid, mainstream development policies over the past 3 decades have wreaked havoc on livelihoods over the past 3 decades. These policies have also sustained a trajectory of deepening inequalities, gendered injustices, and environmental destruction that the world can no longer afford to endure.
While there are people those who assert that economic growth, facilitated by giving free reign to corporations and businesses, can sustain a tide that will (eventually) raise all boats.
However, the notion of development that has prevailed for the past decades, built for the most part upon the premise of limitless economic growth, is going through an ideological crisis.
The myth of economic growth as a panacea for our problems is being debunked.
María Digna Montero était une défenseuse Garifuna (d’origine africaine et autochtone) du droit à la terre et membre de l’Organisation fraternelle noire hondurienne (OFRANEH), une organisation communautaire oeuvrant à protéger les communautés Garifunas, leurs droits, leur culture, leurs ressources et leur territoire ancestraux.
María a également enseigné dans l'école locale et été membre du groupe de travail sur l'éducation bilingue interculturelle de l'OFRANEH.
Le 12 octobre 2019, jour de la Résistance autochtone, des inconnus ont tiré à plusieurs reprises sur María, alors qu’elle se trouvait dans l’arrière-cour de sa maison.
Elle est l'une des six défenseuses Garifunas à avoir été assassinées entre septembre et octobre 2019 et selon OFRANEH, ces crimes n’ont fait l’objet d’aucune enquête de la part des autorités. Dans une déclaration officielle, l'organisation a également souligné le lien entre la violence à l’encontre des dirigeants Garifunas et le développement des industries extractives qui exploitent les ressources naturelles de leurs communautés, affirmant que cette violence s’inscrivait dans une "stratégie d'intimidation et d'expulsion systématique" menée par l'État hondurien.

Joanne es una feminista africana que siente pasión por la lucha contra las desigualdades de género en el continente africano. Ha trabajado con varias organizaciones, medios de comunicación y grupos de reflexión globales, incluidos Amnistía Internacional, Wrthy, el Instituto de Investigación en Desarrollo Local, la BBC, la Comunidad de África Oriental (CAO), entre otros. Integra la junta de Freely in hope, una ONG radicada en Kenia y Zambia, que busca capacitar a lxs sobrevivientes y defensorxs para convertirse en líderes de la lucha para poner fin a la violencia sexual, y de Msingi Trust, un movimiento de activistas que trabajan en la confluencia de la fe y los derechos humanos. Posee una maestría en Administración de Empresas, maestrías en Política Pública y una licenciatura en Derecho. Tiene adicción por los libros, en especial, por la literatura de ficción.

Agroecología y soberanía alimentaria
Contexto
La búsqueda de medios alternativos de producción alimentaria a partir de la sostenibilidad ambiental está ganando terreno en todas las regiones. Esta búsqueda mundial presenta una característica común: la necesidad de involucrar a la población rural y sobre todo a las mujeres, teniendo en cuenta sus prioridades y conocimientos locales, aplicando el principio de la agroecología.
Definición
La agroecología es una forma de practicar la agricultura o de utilizar tecnologías sin dañar el ambiente. Se propone quebrar el modelo hegemónico de desarrollo rural basado en los latifundios y monocultivos que beneficia sobre todo a las empresas agrícolas y afianza la exclusión social.
En la agricultura familiar, la agroecología se manifiesta como resistencia al modelo actual de desarrollo y sus problemas sociales, culturales, ambientales y económicos. Se opone a la falta de autonomía de la población campesina en cuanto a capital financiero y encarna una forma de resistencia al modelo de agronegocios actual.
Perspectiva feminista
Las iniciativas que se basan solo en la agroecología pueden no ser suficientes para resolver todos los problemas de marginación e invisibilidad de las mujeres. Por eso, una perspectiva feminista es fundamental para analizar las normas asociadas con la idea de familia que actualmente se postula como institución perfecta, así como con las condiciones de subordinación de las mujeres.
En términos más simples: para que la agroecología pueda liberar su potencial emancipatorio, es importante que los debates en torno a ella incluyan una reflexión sobre los roles de género socialmente construidos.

Lorena Borjas, a trans Latina woman and activist, lived and worked in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, New York City. In those streets, she looked after her community for years, advocating for trans and immigrant rights, supporting survivors of human trafficking and abuse, campaigning for sex workers’ rights and those of people living with HIV and AIDS.
Lorena was strong and tireless in her fight to support, defend, and have the back of those most marginalized and discriminated by transphobia, misogyny and racism.

Having faced numerous traumas and hardships herself, as a trans immigrant woman and victim of human trafficking, Lorena pulled knowledge and emotional memory from the well of her experiences in order to help build and strengthen the community she was part of and which was part of her. Some of the ways she did this was to organize and mobilize support ranging from providing condoms and connecting trans women to different services, to setting up an HIV testing clinic in her own home.
"She was such a beautiful soul who helped others when her journey was difficult and painful as an immigrant, as a trans immigrant. She believed the trans community needed love, acceptance, and compassion, and she gave it all.” - Luchia Dragosh, QPTV Supervising producer of a documentary about Lorena
In more than 25 years of activism, she also founded the Lorena Borjas Community Fund together with Chase Strangio (lawyer and trans rights activist). The Fund helps the many different members of her community (and especially trans persons) dealing with immigration challenges to avoid the cycle of arrest-jail-deportation.
Lorena passed away in March 2020 of complications from COVID-19.
Her enormous and beautiful legacy will be taken forward through the streets of Queens by the network and community she co-created.

La participación de lxs afiliadxs de AWID en la CSW61
Los Estados miembros al igual que activistas y organizaciones por los derechos de las mujeres se reunirán en la sede central de las Naciones Unidas, en Nueva York, para la sexagésima primera sesión de la Comisión de la Condición Jurídica y Social de las Mujeres del 13 al 24 de marzo para abordar el tema «empoderamiento económico de las mujeres» en el contexto del Objetivo 5 para el Desarrollo Sostenible.
Aunque nos dará mucho gusto reunirnos en persona con aquellxs de ustedes que van a estar en Nueva York, también queremos interactuar con todxs aquellxs que no podrán asistir a la CSW y, en la medida que nos sea posible, amplificar sus voces en los espacios relevantes.

¿Quién es Nayani?
Nayani Thiyagarajah es una realizadora, productora y escritora que se dedica a crear historias para la pantalla grande. Nayani es hija de la diáspora tamil, vive en Toronto y ha trabajado por más de diez años en las artes y la cultura. Su primer largometraje independiente Shadeism: Digging Deeper (2015) tuvo su estreno mundial en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Zanzíbar 2015, donde ganó un premio especial del jurado. Nayani realizó recientemente la película [RE]FRAME en asociación con la productora Camaro West, una compañía de producción con sede en Atlanta y Toronto, que se enfoca en reformular las historias de las personas negras, indígenas y otras personas de color a través de narraciones para la pantalla grande.
Hablando más seriamente, habría que señalar que Nayani se ríe de una manera extraña, es muy torpe, y su cabeza está siempre en las nubes. Nayani se siente extremadamente bendecida de poder crear historias para el cine, de ganarse la vida jugando a inventar historias y por encima de todo, Nayani cree en el amor.

Existem várias razões pelas quais a sua resposta ao inquérito WITM é importante. Por exemplo, tem a oportunidade de partilhar a sua experiência vivida com a mobilização de financiamento para apoiar a sua organização; de reivindicar o seu poder como especialista sobre como o dinheiro circula e os bolsos em que entra; e de contribuir para a defesa coletiva e consistente junto de financiadores para mover mais recursos de maior qualidade. Ao longo das últimas duas décadas, o inquérito WITM da AWID tem-se revelado um recurso fundamental para ativistas e financiadores. Convidamo-lo a juntar-se a nós na sua terceira edição para destacar o estado efetivo do financiamento, desafiar soluções falsas e apontar a forma como o financiamento precisa de mudar para que os movimentos prosperem e enfrentem os desafios complexos do nosso tempo.

Cristina Bautista fue una integrante de la comunidad Indígena Nasa, cuyo hogar se sitúa en la región del norte del Cauca, en Colombia. Cristina formó parte de la resistencia Nasa como líder y defensora de los derechos de la tierra, pero también como trabajadora social y gobernadora de la reserva Indígena Nasa Tacueyó.
Incansable defensora de los derechos del pueblo Nasa, Cristina habló alto y claro sobre la violencia dirigida contra su comunidad. En un discurso ante las Naciones Unidas, Cristina reclamó la protección de las vidas de las mujeres indígenas, y su participación en las diferentes esferas de la vida. En 2017, Cristina entró en el programa de Becas Indígenas de la Oficina de Derechos Humanos de la ONU y en 2019 recibió una subvención del Fondo de Contribuciones Voluntarias de la ONU para los Pueblos Indígenas.
"Me gustaría sacar a la luz la situación actual de los pueblos indígenas en Colombia, el asesinato de líderes indígenas, la represión de las protestas sociales. El acuerdo de paz, en lugar de ayudar, lo que ha hecho es reforzar el conflicto y la explotación de territorios sagrados en Colombia... En la situación actual, en casi todas las naciones indígenas, como mujeres, estamos trabajando para encontrar un futuro mejor para nuestras familias. No quiero que más mujeres del campo vivan en estas circunstancias. Las mujeres indígenas necesitamos oportunidades para participar en la vida política, económica, en la sociedad y en la cultura. Hoy me da fuerzas ver a todas estas mujeres aquí y ver que no estoy sola". - Cristina Bautista, 2019
El 29 de octubre de 2019, Cristina fue asesinada junto a cuatro guardias indígenas desarmados en un ataque que, supuestamente, fue llevado a cabo por miembros armados del grupo disidente de las FARC "Dagoberto Ramos".
Según Global Witness, "en los últimos años el asesinato de líderes comunitarios y sociales ha aumentado dramáticamente en Colombia".
"La comunidad Nasa ha alertado repetidamente a las autoridades sobre las amenazas que reciben y que ponen en peligro su seguridad. Sin embargo, a pesar de los esfuerzos que ponen los sucesivos gobiernos colombianos, los pueblos indígenas siguen corriendo grandes riesgos, especialmente, las figuras clave religiosas o comunitarias como Cristina Bautista". - Reunión informativa de la ONU para la prensa (en inglés), 1 de noviembre de 2019.
With over 30 years of finance experience, Christine has devoted her career to furthering nonprofit missions on a global scale. Her contributions extend to serving as Treasurer on the Board of an NGO. Christine joined AWID in 2007 as Controller and in 2023 took on the role as Director of Finance. During her spare time she enjoys traveling, gardening and hiking.
