Protection of the Family
The Issue
Over the past few years, a troubling new trend at the international human rights level is being observed, where discourses on ‘protecting the family’ are being employed to defend violations committed against family members, to bolster and justify impunity, and to restrict equal rights within and to family life.
The campaign to "Protect the Family" is driven by ultra-conservative efforts to impose "traditional" and patriarchal interpretations of the family, and to move rights out of the hands of family members and into the institution of ‘the family’.
“Protection of the Family” efforts stem from:
- rising traditionalism,
- rising cultural, social and religious conservatism and
- sentiment hostile to women’s human rights, sexual rights, child rights and the rights of persons with non-normative gender identities and sexual orientations.
Since 2014, a group of states have been operating as a bloc in human rights spaces under the name “Group of Friends of the Family”, and resolutions on “Protection of the Family” have been successfully passed every year since 2014.
This agenda has spread beyond the Human Rights Council. We have seen regressive language on “the family” being introduced at the Commission on the Status of Women, and attempts made to introduce it in negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our Approach
AWID works with partners and allies to jointly resist “Protection of the Family” and other regressive agendas, and to uphold the universality of human rights.
In response to the increased influence of regressive actors in human rights spaces, AWID joined allies to form the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). OURs is a collaborative project that monitors, analyzes, and shares information on anti-rights initiatives like “Protection of the Family”.
Rights at Risk, the first OURs report, charts a map of the actors making up the global anti-rights lobby, identifies their key discourses and strategies, and the effect they are having on our human rights.
The report outlines “Protection of the Family” as an agenda that has fostered collaboration across a broad range of regressive actors at the UN. It describes it as: “a strategic framework that houses “multiple patriarchal and anti-rights positions, where the framework, in turn, aims to justify and institutionalize these positions.”

Madiha El Safty
Madiha fue una destacada profesora de Sociología con activa participación en la sociedad civil como defensora de los derechos de las mujeres en la región árabe.
Presidió la Alianza para las Mujeres Árabes y dentro del Consejo Nacional de Mujeres fue miembro del Comité de la Sociedad Civil y del Comité para el Desarrollo de la Gobernación de Minia. Fue autora de numerosas publicaciones en las que analizó y arrojó luz sobre las desigualdades de género y la discriminación contra las mujeres.
Es recordada con cariño por colegas, estudiantes y amigxs.
Jemimah Naburri-Kaheru
Biography
Jemimah Naburri-Kaheru es una consumada estratega internacional en recursos humanos con gran influencia en la región del Cuerno de África. Anteriormente, se desempeñó como gerente regional de Oficina y Recursos Humanos en Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA, Iniciativa Estratégica para las Mujeres del Cuerno de África). Su influencia se extiende a la dirección de los recursos humanos de más de 70 empleades regionales, debido a que los ingresos anuales de la organización registraron un veloz crecimiento del 40%. Teresia Teaiwa
Considérée par le Guardian comme l'une des icônes nationales de Kiribati, Teresia était une avocate téméraire.
Elle travaillait en étroite collaboration avec des groupes féministes aux îles Fidji. Ses travaux de recherche ont servi à aborder les problèmes du féminisme et de l'égalité de genre dans le Pacifique. Elle était également corédactrice de l’International Feminist Journal of Politics. En Océanie, son influence a traversé les frontières académiques, ainsi que les mouvements pour la justice sociale.
Brenda Salas Neves
Biography
Originaire de la cordillère des Andes, Brenda Salas est un·e stratège féministe queer. Iel œuvre à changer les discours et mobiliser les ressources pour soutenir les mouvements de justice raciale et climatique dans le monde entier. Brenda a produit de nombreux projets de communication pour exalter le pouvoir des migrant·e·s et dénoncer les interventions militaires américaines en Amérique latine avec Deep Dish TV et le Portland Central America Solidarity Committee (Comité de Solidarité avec l’Amérique centrale de Portland). Fier·ère d’être membre de l’Audre Lorde Project, iel est titulaire d’un diplôme du mouvement United World Colleges (UWC).

SOLIDARITY NETWORK
Meet the Solidarity Network, a health and service union mostly led by women. Emerging as a response to increasing precarity, severe underpayment and hostile work environments faced by workers in Georgia, Solidarity Network fights for dignified compensation and work places.
Its goal? To create a national worker’s democratic movement. To do so, it has been branching out, organizing and teaming up with other local and regional unions and slowly creating a network of unions and empowering women workers to become union leaders.
Its political approach is a holistic one. For Solidarity Network, labor rights issues are directly connected to broader national political and economic agendas and reforms. That’s why they are pushing for tax justice, women and LGBTQIA+ rights, and fighting against the dismantling of the Georgian welfare state.
The Solidarity Network is also part of Transnational Social Strike (TSS), a political platform and infrastructure inspired by migrant, women and essential worker organizing that works to build connections between labor movements across borders and nurture global solidarity.

Amal Bayou
Amal was a prominent politician and parliamentarian in Libya. She was a faculty member at Benghazi University from 1995 until her death in 2017.
Amal was a civil society activist and a member of various social and political initiatives. She assisted the families of martyrs and the disappeared, and was a founding member of a youth initiative called ‘’Youth of Benghazi Libya”. In the 2014 parliamentary elections, Amal was elected to the House of Representatives with more than 14,000 votes (the highest number of votes anyone received in the 2014 elections).
Amal will remain in the memories of many as a woman politician working to ensure a better future in one the most difficult and conflict-ridden contexts in the region.
Rachel Mabaudi
Biography
Rachel est une experte en finance, avec plus de vingt ans d’expérience. Elle a supervisé des opérations financières et des projets pour des entités privées et publiques, des organisations à but non lucratif et des organisations non gouvernementales internationales. Selena “Rocky” Malone
Rocky mostró un liderazgo y una dirección inspiradoras en su trabajo con jóvenes lesbianas, gays, bisexuales, transgénero, intersex, queer, y personas transgénero indígenas de Australia (LGBTIQBBSG) en riesgo.
Rocky comenzó su carrera con el Servicio de Policía de Queensland como Oficial de Policía de Enlace. Para ella, hacer una diferencia era algo importante. Desarrolló una carrera impresionante trabajando con jóvenes LGBTIQBBSG como Gerente del Servicio Juvenil de Puertas Abiertas.
Rocky trabajó con lxs beneficiarixs en situaciones complejas, específicamente relacionadas con la identidad sexual y de género. En 2016, en la Corte Suprema de Brisbane, Michael Kirby, ex juez del Tribunal Supremo de Apelaciones, mencionó por su nombre a Rocky al elogiar el trabajo que el Servicio Legal LGBTI había desarrollado a lo largo de los años.
