AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us.
This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.
49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.
This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.
The portraits of the 2020 edition are designed by award winning illustrator and animator, Louisa Bertman.
AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these activists and WHRDs and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.
To date, 467 feminists and WHRDs are featured.

Patience est une professionnelle internationale des ressources humaines avec plus d'une décennie d'expérience dans la gestion des ressources humaines (RH) dans le secteur non lucratif. Elle a travaillé auparavant chez Mercy Corps en tant que responsable générale des ressources humaines pour l'Afrique. Elle y a appuyé le cycle de vie complet des employé·e·s expatrié·e·s dans la région de l'Afrique de l'Est et de l'Afrique australe et fourni des conseils techniques RH aux responsables des ressources humaines dans les bureaux nationaux de la région africaine. Avant de rejoindre l'équipe internationale des ressources humaines, elle agissait en tant que point focal national ressources humaines et protection, et faisait partie de l'équipe de direction qui traitait de toutes les questions de ressources humaines et de protection. Just like women have learned to avoid dark streets for their safety, women journalists are forced to avoid reporting certain stories as a result of online harassment.
Harassment is not part of the job description and should be called out and challenged at every turn to ensure these important voices are not silenced.

Ȃurea Mouzinho is a feminist economic justice organizer from Luanda, Angola, with a 10-year career in research, grant-making, advocacy, and movement-building for women's rights and economic justice across Africa and the global south. Currently the Program Manager for Africa at Thousand Currents, she also serves on the Feminist Africa Editorial Board and is a member of Ondjango Feminista, a feminist collective she co-founded in 2016. A new mom to a Gemini boy, urea enjoys slow days with her young family and taking long strolls by the beach.

She focused on civil and political rights, issues of impunity and justice, and contributed to uncovering the abuse of power, including corruption. She also participated in peacebuilding projects in her hometown Samaniego, such as the Municipal Peace Council and the Municipal Women’s Board.
Paula received death threats after exposing the irregular handling of resources and complaining about acts of corruption at the Lorencita Villegas Hospital in the Nariñense municipality. She was murdered on 20 May 2019, when two men approached and shot her at close range.

Carol Thomas fue una pionera en el trabajo por los derechos sexuales y reproductivos de las mujeres en Sudáfrica. Fue una ginecóloga de gran talento y la fundadora del WomenSpace [EspacioDeMujeres].
No sólo las empleó en su práctica, sino que también abogó por proporcionar formas no tradicionales de asistencia sanitaria a las mujeres, ofreciendo servicios de alta calidad, empáticos y accesibles.

La innovadora y multipremiada empresa social de Carol, "“iMobiMaMa”, utilizaba los quioscos móviles y la tecnología interactiva para conectar directamente a las mujeres con servicios de salud prenatal y reproductiva, información y apoyo en las comunidades de toda Sudáfrica.
Carol apoyó a las mujeres tanto en los embarazos deseados como en los no deseados, y fue mentora de muchxs enfermerxs y doctorxs a lo largo de su vida.

Nana is a feminist organizer and a reproductive rights and population policy researcher based in Egypt. She is a member of Realizing Sexual and Reproductive Justice (RESURJ), a member of the Advisory Board of the A Project in Lebanon, and a member of the Community Committee of Mama Cash. Nana holds an MSc in Public Health from KIT Institute and Vrije University in Amsterdam. In her work, she follows and contextualizes national population policies while building evidence that addresses modern eugenics, regressive international aid, and authoritarianism. Previously, she was part of the Geneva Foundation for Medical Education and Research, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, and Ikhtyar Feminist Collective in Cairo.
As we navigate the global polycrisis, movements are tirelessly building power beyond traditional power structures. The wave of US presidential executive orders is intended to scare us, but no amount of fascist ideology can erase our existence and resistance.
