Memory as Resistance: A Tribute to WHRDs no longer with us
AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us.
In 2020, we are taking a turn
This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.
49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.
This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.
The stories of activists we honour keep their legacy alive and carry their inspiration forward into our movements’ future work.
The portraits of the 2020 edition are designed by award winning illustrator and animator, Louisa Bertman.
AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these activists and WHRDs and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

The Tribute was first launched in 2012
It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.
To date, 467 feminists and WHRDs are featured.

Why did AWID decide to change the Forum location from Bali to Taipei?
Events in Indonesia, in late 2019 - in particular, signs of intensifying militarization and backlash against LGBTQ rights - led us to question AWID’s ability to maintain a reasonably safe and welcoming environment for the diversity of participants we aspire to bring together at the Forum.
After careful consideration the AWID Board of Directors decided to change the venue for the 14th International AWID Forum, in November 2019 from Bali to Taipei.
Taipei offers a strong degree of logistical capacities, and is accessible for many travellers (with a facilitated e-visa process for international conferences).

Obiageli “Oby” Nwankwo
With a legal career spanning more than 30 years, Oby was known across Africa and around the world as a champion for gender justice and human rights.
She founded and served as Executive Director of the Civil Resource Development and Documentation Centre (CIRDDOC), a Nigerian NGO which sponsors trainings and network-building activities for members of civil society, parliamentarians and other key stakeholders to promote human rights, good governance and access to justice and rule of law.
Oby is remembered fondly by activists in Nigeria as an “extraordinary activist who displayed energy and passion towards the fight for gender equality and gender justice in Nigeria and across Africa.”
Activism in the Middle East and North Africa
In our 2015 Online Tribute we honor five Women Human Rights Defenders murdered in the Middle East and North Africa region. These defenders worked for women and civil rights as lawyers and activists. Their death highlights the often dangerous and difficult working conditions in their respective countries. Please join AWID in honoring these women, their activism and legacy by sharing the memes below with your colleagues, networks and friends and by using the hashtags #WHRDTribute and 16Days.

Laura fue una abogada y líder activista que luchó valientemente por la descriminalización del trabajo sexual en Irlanda.
Es recordada como «una combatiente por la libertad de lxs trabajadorxs sexuales, una feminista, una madre para su hija y una amiga necesaria para mucha gente».
Laura promovió el reconocimiento de las personas de la industria del sexo como trabajadorxs merecedorxs de derechos. Presentó demandas por la descriminalización, e inició una revisión judicial en la Corte Suprema de Belfast respecto de las provisiones que criminalizan la compra de servicios sexuales. Declaró que su intención era llevar el caso a la Corte Europea de Derechos Humanos.

En el transcurso de sus vidas, 6 defensoras de derechos humanos de Europa occidental, Oriental, Central y del Sudeste investigaron, hicieron campañas y participaron en los movimientos de la paz y los derechos de las mujeres a través del activismo político y social o mediante la danza. TRAVESTI :
une identité de genre latino-américaine
Le terme travesti désigne une identité de genre latino-américaine sans équivalent dans d'autres langues, et exclusivement féminine. C'est une personne désignée de genre masculin à la naissance qui s'identifie comme une femme.
Elles doivent toujours être adressées avec le pronom “elle”. Travesti n'est pas seulement une identité de genre située en dehors de la binarité de genre, c'est aussi une identité culturelle enracinée dans les mouvements latino-américains.
Le terme était initialement péjoratif, mais a ensuite été réapproprié comme symbole de résistance et de dignité. Chaque travesti est trans parce qu'elle ne s'identifie pas au genre désigné à la naissance, mais toutes les travesti ne se considèrent pas comme femmes trans, car travesti est déjà une identité de genre en soi.
