Memory as Resistance: A Tribute to WHRDs no longer with us

AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us. 

In 2020, we are taking a turn

This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.

49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.

This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.

The stories of activists we honour keep their legacy alive and carry their inspiration forward into our movements’ future work.

AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these activists and WHRDs and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

The Tribute was first launched in 2012

It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.

To date, 467 feminists and WHRDs are featured.

Biography

Isabel is a feminist from the United Kingdom with over a decade of experience in feminist responses to fascisms, fundamentalisms, and anti-rights trends. At AWID, her work centers on knowledge-building and has included leading the production of the Rights at Risk series in collaboration with the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). She holds a Master’s degree in Gender Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and previously worked with Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML). She is passionate about cross-movement work, movement-centered knowledge-building, and the use of creative expression to disrupt systems of oppression. Outside of work, Isabel is active in various disability justice spaces for collective care, learning, and advocacy.

Cynthia Cockburn était une sociologue, écrivaine, universitaire, photographe et militante pour la paix féministe.

Elle a étudié les aspects genrés de la violence et du conflit et fait d’importantes contributions au mouvement pacifiste en explorant les thèmes de la masculinité et de la violence, ainsi que par son activisme local et international.

Ayant introduit une analyse féministe aux questions de militarisation et de guerre, Cynthia figurait parmi les universitaires dont les écrits et analyses illustraient la manière dont la violence basée sur le genre joue un rôle essentiel dans la perpétuation de la guerre. Travaillant en étroite collaboration avec des activistes pacifistes dans des pays en conflit, ses conclusions portaient sur des contextes aussi divers que l’Irlande du Nord, la Bosnie-Herzégovine, Israël et la Palestine, la Corée du Sud, le Japon, l’Espagne et le Royaume-Uni. Sa recherche et ses écrits universitaires ont permis d’éclairer le fait que la violence soit vécue selon un continuum de temps et d’échelle, et perçue très différemment lorsque l’on y applique le prisme du genre.

Elle disait que « [l]e genre nous aide à voir la continuité, la connexion entre les évènements de violence ».

Cynthia a pu mettre ses recherches en pratique grâce à son activisme local et international auprès de mouvements pour la démilitarisation, le désarmement et la paix. Elle a aidé à lancer le camp de femmes pour la paix de Greenham Common, qui prônait le désarmement nucléaire universel en Grande-Bretagne, ainsi que participé à la mise en place de la branche londonienne des Women in Black. Au fil des ans, Cynthia a organisé et participé à des veillées hebdomadaires locales et à la chorale politique Raised Voices, interprétant et écrivant certaines des paroles des chansons. Elle fut également active au sein du groupe Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), du Forum des socialistes féministes européennes et de Women Against Fundamentalism.

Cynthia est née en juillet 1934 et s’est éteinte en septembre 2019, à l’âge de 85 ans.

Marianne Mesfin Asfaw

Marianne Mesfin Asfaw es una feminista panafricana dedicada a la justicia social y la construcción de comunidad. Es Licenciada en Estudios de Género y Relaciones Internacionales de la Universidad de Columbia Británica (UBC) y posee una maestría en Estudios de Género y Derecho de la Escuela de Estudios Orientales y Africanos de la Universidad de Londres. Anteriormente, trabajó en administración académica y apoyo para estudiantes internacionales. Asimismo, se desempeñó como investigadora y facilitadora en espacios feministas y sin fines de lucro. También ha trabajado como voluntaria en organizaciones no gubernamentales, incluida Plan International, donde cumplió funciones administrativas. Antes de asumir sus funciones actuales, se desempeñó en logística y apoyo administrativo para AWID. Marianne nació en Etiopía, se crió en Ruanda y, actualmente, reside en Tkaronto/Toronto (Canadá). Le encanta leer, viajar y pasar el tiempo con su familia y amistades. Binta Sarr

Binta Sarr was an activist for social, economic, cultural and political justice, and a hydraulic engineer in Senegal. After 13 years in civil service, she left this path to work with rural and marginalized women. 

Out of this engagement grew the Association for the Advancement of Senegalese Women (APROFES), a grassroots movement and organization Binta founded in 1987. One of her main approaches was leadership training, relating not only to economic activities but also to women's rights and access to positions of decision-making. 

“Grassroots populations must organize, mobilize, assume citizen control and demand democratic governance in all sectors of public space. The priority of social movements must go beyond the fight against poverty and must be focused on articulated and coherent development programs in line with human rights principles, while taking into account their needs and concerns both at the national and sub-regional levels and from a perspective of African and global integration.” - Binta Sarr

Rooted in Binta’s conviction that fundamental change in women’s status requires transformation in male attitudes, APROFES took an interdisciplinary approach, using radio, seminars and popular theatre, as well as providing innovative public education and cultural support for awareness-raising actions. Its popular theatre troupe performed original pieces on the caste system in Senegal, alcoholism, and conjugal violence. Binta and her team also looked at the crucial connection between the community and the broader world.

“For APROFES, it is a question of studying and taking into account the interactions between the micro and the macro, the local and the global and also, the different facets of development. From slavery to colonization, neocolonialism and the commodification of human development, most of the resources of Africa and the Third World (oil, gold, minerals and other natural resources) are still under the control of financial cartels and other multinationals that dominate this globalized world.” - Binta Sarr

Binta was one of the founding members of the female section of the Cultural and Sports Association Magg Daan. She received commendations from the Regional Governor and the Minister of Hydrology for her "devotion to rural people."

Born in 1954 in Guiguineo, a small rural town, Binta passed away in September 2019.

Umyra Ahmad est une féministe malaisienne expérimentée en plaidoyer international et régional et en éducation aux droits humains. Au sein de l'AWID, elle travaille à la promotion des droits liés au genre et à la sexualité à l'ONU. Avant de nous rejoindre, elle était chargée de programme à IWRAW Asie-Pacifique, où elle a aidé des organisations de terrain régionales, nationales et locales à utiliser les mécanismes des organes conventionnels de l'ONU comme outils de redevabilité des États et d'accès à la justice. En Malaisie, elle travaille avec des collectifs queer et de réfugié·e·s, et soutient la coordination de diverses initiatives d'entraide.

Laurie Carlos fue una actriz, directora, bailarina, dramaturga y poeta estadounidense, una artista y visionaria extraordinaria que tenía un poderoso don para hacer surgir el arte en otras personas.

«Laurie entraba en una habitación (cualquier habitación/todas las habitaciones ) con  clarividencia arremolinada, con genio artístico, rigor corporizado, con un realismo feroz— y con la determinación de ser libre... y de liberar a otrxs. Una hacedora de magia. Una vidente. Alguien que cambiaba de formas. Laurie me dijo una vez que entraba en los cuerpos de las personas para descubrir qué necesitaban.» - Sharon Bridgforth

Combinaba estilos de actuación tales como gestos rítmicos y texto. Laurie era mentora de nuevxs actorxs, performers y escritorxs, y ayudaba a difundir su trabajo a través de «Naked Stages», una beca para artistas emergentes. Integraba el Penumbra Theater, con el que colaboraba mediante guiones que produjeran identificaciones, a fin de «traer más voces femeninas al teatro». Laurie integraba también Urban Bush Women, una compañía de danza contemporánea prestigiosa que relata historias sobre mujeres de la diáspora africana.

En 1976, como Lady in Blue, hizo su debut en Broadway, en la producción original galardonada del drama poético de Ntozake Shange For colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf. La obra de Laurie incluye White Chocolate, The Cooking Show y Organdy Falsetto.

Laurie nació y creció en la ciudad de Nueva York, trabajó y vivió en Twin Cities. Falleció el 29 de diciembre de 2016 a la edad de 67 años, luego de una batalla contra el cáncer de colon.

#MeToo en Chine

L'exposition #MeToo en Chine a été organisée pour la première fois en 2019 et a effectué une tournée dans 5 villes. L'objectif de l'exposition est de mettre davantage en avant les expériences personnelles des victimes et des activistes et, en prenant part à ces histoires, d'inspirer notre public à se joindre à la lutte. L'exposition est elle-même devenue une partie de la lutte #MeToo; elle a fait face à d’innombrables défis lors de sa tournée à travers la Chine et a même risqué la fermeture à plus d'une occasion.

Biography

Sanyu is a Pan-African feminist based in Nairobi, Kenya. She has spent the last decade supporting labour, feminist and human rights movements advocating for corporate accountability, economic justice and gender justice. She has worked with the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, IWRAW Asia Pacific and the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative. She has a Master’s of Laws in Human Rights Law and a Bachelor’s of Laws from the University of Nottingham. Her writing has been published in the Business and Human Rights Journal, Human Rights Law Review, Open Global Rights, Open Democracy and more. In her free time, she loves walking in the forest and chasing butterflies.

Fadila M. était une activiste “tribale” Soulaliyate d’Azrou, dans la province marocaine d’Ifrane. Elle s'est battue contre une forme spécifique de discrimination à l'égard des femmes “tribales” liée à la propriété foncière.

Dans le cadre du Mouvement en faveur des droits fonciers des femmes Soulaliyates, elle a travaillé pour la révision de la législation-cadre relative à la gestion des biens communautaires, avec l'adoption en 2019 de trois projets de lois garantissant l'égalité des femmes et des hommes. 

Selon le droit coutumier en vigueur, les femmes n'avaient pas le droit de bénéficier de la terre, surtout celles qui étaient célibataires, veuves ou divorcées. Au Maroc, les droits à la terre collective se transmettaient traditionnellement entre les membres masculins de plus de 16 ans issus d’une même famille. Depuis 2007, Fadila M. faisait partie du mouvement des femmes, à savoir la première mobilisation populaire nationale de revendication de leurs droits fonciers. Parmi leurs victoires, citons le fait qu'en 2012, les femmes Soulaliyates ont pu, pour la première fois, s'inscrire sur les listes de bénéficiaires et disposer d'une indemnisation liée à la cession des terres. Le mouvement a également réussi à faire modifier le dahir de 1919 (décret du roi du Maroc) de façon à garantir aux femmes le droit à l'égalité.

Fadila M. s’est éteinte le 27 septembre 2018. Les circonstances de sa mort, survenue alors qu’elle participait à une marche de protestation sur la question des terres collectives, ne sont pas claires. Si les autorités déclarent que sa mort est accidentelle et qu'elle a fait un arrêt cardiaque sur le chemin de l'hôpital, la section locale de l'Association marocaine des droits de l'homme (AMDH), affirme quant à elle que Fadila a été étouffée par un membre des forces policières arborant un drapeau marocain. Sa famille a demandé qu’une enquête soit menée mais les résultats de l'autopsie n'ont pas été communiqués.

Biography

Veena Singh es una isleña de Fiyi, feminista y mujer de color Nacida y criada en un pequeño pueblo rural de Fiyi, su fuerza proviene de su rica herencia mixta (su madre es una mujer fiyiana indígena y su padre es fiyiano de ascendencia India).  La identidad y las experiencias vividas de Veena han influido profundamente en su compromiso con la justicia, la equidad y la inclusión.   Con más de dos décadas de experiencia en derechos humanos, igualdad de género, desarrollo comunitario e inclusión social, Veena es una activista apasionada por la reconfiguración del poder para crear un cambio transformativo y construir una «economía de la amabilidad» Su trabajo se expande por diversas áreas que incluyen: desarrollo comunitario, mujeres, paz y seguridad, políticas sociales, derechos humanos y defensa de políticas. 

Veena está profundamente comprometida en hacer avanzar la inclusión, la paz y la justicia, los derechos sexuales y por la justicia reproductiva (SRHR, por sus siglas en inglés), la justicia climática y los derechos humanos.  Aporta un gran acervo de experiencia trabajando con redes de base, organizaciones internacionales e instituciones gubernamentales, siempre con foco en los abordajes locales y liderados por la comunidad y los principios feministas. 

Fuera de su ‘vida de oficina’, Veena es activista por el medio ambiente, defensora de la salud mental y escritora.  Es la mamá de 11 gatos, se viste con sari y es amante del correo postal y las postales.  Como observadora atenta de los movimientos feministas en Fiyi y el Pacífico, Veena está en un recorrido personal para «decolonizar la mente y el yo a través de la autoreflexión radical» Sobre todo, la impulsa el deseo y el sueño de producir una escritura convocante y resonante que conecte con la diáspora del Pacífico y difunda las voces de los márgenes.
