Memory as Resistance: A Tribute to WHRDs no longer with us

AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us. 

In 2020, we are taking a turn

This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.

49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.

This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.

The stories of activists we honour keep their legacy alive and carry their inspiration forward into our movements’ future work.

The portraits of the 2020 edition are designed by award winning illustrator and animator, Louisa Bertman. 

AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these activists and WHRDs and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

The Tribute was first launched in 2012

It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.

To date, 467 feminists and WHRDs are featured.

Con 1773 cabilderos de los combustibles fósiles presentes en la COP29 del año pasado, nos dirigimos, junto con otres feministas a Belém (Brasil) del 10 al 21 de noviembre de 2025. Allí continuaremos denunciando las soluciones falsas, llamando la atención sobre la captura corporativa, y exigiendo que los Estados cumplan sus compromisos bajo las Responsabilidades Comunes pero Diferenciadas y las Capacidades Respectivas (en inglés) para impulsar las alternativas económicas feministas.

USD 2,7 billones para gasto militar. USD 300.000 millones para la justicia climática. Estamos aquí para dar vuelta el relato.

Paulina Cruz Ruiz, from the Rabinal, Baja Verapaz region of Guatemala, was an ancestral Maya Achí (Indigenous) authority and a human rights defender.

She was actively involved in community organizing and resistance, including legal measures against mining projects on Indigenous territory, projects that would severely affect and damage the socio-environmental fabric.  

“The extractive industry model promoted by the Guatemalan government and the construction of large-scale development projects on indigenous lands without community consent has been a source of ongoing disputes with resistance movements.” - Minority Rights Group International

Paulina was also part of the March for Dignity, Life and Justice, in which on 1 May 2019 thousands of Guatemalans started a march of eight days against corruption and impunity in the prosecution and assassinations of human rights, peasant and Indigenous leaders and land defenders.

Paulina was murdered on 14 September 2019 near her home in the village of Xococ. 

According to the Minority Rights Group International, “one of the major ongoing issues affecting Mayan communities is the increasing activity of the mining industry.”

La historia de cómo OluTimehin Kukoyi (que participaba por primera vez) vivió el Foro de Feminismos Negros y el Foro de AWID de Bahía (2016) ilustra esto con mucha potencia.

Rising Together: Connect, Heal, Thrive

The Forum theme––Rising Together––is an invitation to engage with our whole selves, to connect with each other in focused, caring and brave ways, so that we can feel the heartbeat of global movements and rise together to meet the challenges of these times.

Feminist, women’s rights, gender justice, LBTQI+ and allied movements around the world are at a critical juncture, facing a powerful backlash on previously-won rights and freedoms. Recent years have brought the rapid rise of authoritarianisms, the violent repression of civil society and criminalization of women and gender-diverse human rights defenders, escalating war and conflict in many parts of our world, the continued perpetuation of economic injustices, and the intersecting health, ecological and climate crises.

Our movements are reeling and, at the same time, seeking to build and maintain the strength and fortitude required for the work ahead. We can't do this work alone, in our silos. Connection and healing are essential to transforming persistent power imbalances and fault lines within our own movements. We must work and strategize in interconnected ways, so that we can thrive together. The AWID Forum fosters that vital ingredient of interconnectedness in the staying power, growth and transformative influence of feminist organizing globally.

Sexting Like a Feminist: Humor in the Digital Feminist Revolution

On September 2nd, 2021, the amazing feminist and social justice activists of AWID’s Crear | Résister | Transform festival came together not only to share resistance strategies, co-create, and transform the world, but also to talk dirty on Twitter.

The exercise was led by Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah, co-founder of the blog Adventures From The Bedrooms of African Women and author of The Sex Lives of African Women, who paired up with the Pan-Africanist digital queer womanist platform AfroFemHub, to ask the question: How can we safely and consensually explore our pleasure, desires, and fantasies via text?

Basically: How would a feminist sext?

I believe this is a critically important question because it looks at the larger issue of how one navigates the online world with a feminist understanding. Under capitalism, discourse around bodies and sex can be dehumanizing and distorting, and navigating sexual pleasure in virtual spaces can feel performative. So seeking out avenues where we can explore how we share our desire in ways that are affirming and enthusiastic can push back against dominant models of presentation and consumption to reclaim these spaces as sites for authentic engagement, proving that all sexting should be just that: feminist.

Plus, allowing feminist discourse to embody its playful side in online discourse helps reframe a popular narrative that feminist engagement is joyless and dour. But as we know, having fun is part of our politics, and an inherent part of what it means to be feminist.

Using the hashtag #SextLikeAFeminist, scholars and activists from all over the world chimed in with their thirstiest feminist tweets, and here are my top ten.

As these tweets show, it turns out that sexting like a feminist is sexy, funny – and horny. Yet, it never loses sight of its commitment to equity and justice.

CFA 2023 - what you need to know - EN

What you need to know

  • Priority will be given to activities that facilitate and encourage connection and interaction among participants. If your activity can be held online or hybrid (connecting participants on-site and online), please consider how to generate genuine engagement and active participation from online participants.
  • We encourage cross-movement, cross-regional and inter-generational encounters, dialogues and exchanges.
  • Please design your activity in a way that allows flexibility in the number of participants. While a few activities may be limited to smaller groups, the majority will need to accommodate larger numbers.
  • If your activity fits a number of formats or none, you will be able to indicate as such on the application form.

Languages in which you can submit your activity

  • Languages for Applications: Applications will be accepted in English, French, Spanish, Thai and Arabic.
  • Languages at the Forum: Simultaneous interpretation will be provided at the Forum Plenary Sessions in English, French, Spanish, Thai, and Arabic as well as ISL (International Sign Language) and possibly more. For all other activities, interpretation will be offered in some––but not all––of these languages, and possibly others, such as Swahili and Portuguese.

Nuestro Informe Anual 2013 presenta lo más destacado del trabajo que realizamos el año pasado como aporte para avanzar los derechos de las mujeres y la igualdad de género en el mundo. 

El año 2013 marcó el inicio de nuestro Plan Estratégico para el período 2013-2016 que fue elaborado en respuesta al contexto mundial actual.

A continuación les acercamos los puntos destacados de nuestro análisis del contexto mundial, la posición que asumimos como organización mundial feminista y de membresía ante este contexto, los resultados que nos proponemos y cómo organizamos nuestro trabajo para alcanzarlos. 

Promotion des droits universels et de la justice

Eradiquer les fascismes et les fondamentalismes

Partout sur la planète, les défenseur·e·s féministes, des droits des femmes et de la justice de genre remettent en question les programmes des acteurs fascistes et fondamentalistes. Ces forces opprimantes prennent pour cibles les femmes, les personnes non conformes dans leur identité de genre, leur expression et/ou orientation sexuelle, ainsi que d’autres communautés opprimées.

Les idéologies discriminatoires sapent et s’emparent de nos systèmes et normes en termes de droits humains de manière à ce que seuls certains groupes aient l’exclusivité des droits. Face à cela, l’initiative Promotion des droits universels et de la justice (Advancing Universal Rights and Justice, AURJ) s’attache à promouvoir l’universalité des droits - le principe fondamental selon lequel les droits humains sont le bien de chaque être humain, quelle que soit son identité, et ce sans exception.

Nous créons un espace pour permettre aux mouvements et à nos allié·e·s féministes, en faveur des droits humains et de la justice de genre de se reconnaître, d’élaborer des stratégies et de recourir à des actions collectives afin de contrecarrer l’influence et l’impact des acteurs anti-droits. Nous cherchons également à faire avancer les cadres, les normes et les propositions féministes et relatifs aux droits des femmes, ainsi qu’à protéger et promouvoir l’universalité des droits.  

Nos actions

A travers cette initiative, nous visons à :

  • Enrichir nos connaissances : Dans le cadre du rôle de premier plan que nous assurons sur la plateforme collaborative, l’Observatoire de l'universalité des droits (Observatory on the Universality of Rights, OURs), l’AWID soutient les mouvements féministes, en faveur des droits des femmes et de la justice de genre en diffusant et vulgarisant des connaissances et des messages clés concernant les acteurs anti-droits, leurs stratégies et leur impact au sein des organismes internationaux de protection des droits humains.

  • Promouvoir des programmes féministes : Nous faisons des alliances avec des partenaires au sein d’espaces internationaux dédiés aux droits humains, notamment le Conseil des droits de l’homme, la Commission de la population et du développement, la Commission de la condition de la femme et l’Assemblée générale de l’ONU.

  • Créer et élargir les alternatives : Nous impliquons nos membres afin de garantir que les engagements, les résolutions et les normes à l’échelle internationale sont reflétées et réintroduites dans l’organisation d’autres espaces à l’échelle locale, nationale et régionale.

  • Mobiliser des actions solidaires : Nous agissons aux côtés de défenseuses des droits humains (women human rights defenders, WHRD), y compris de défenseur·e·s trans et intersexes et de jeunes féministes, et oeuvrons à contester les fondamentalismes et les fascismes tout en attirant l’attention sur les situations à risque.

รายการทอล์คโชว์: สนทนาแบบเป็นไปเองในรูปแบบรายการทอล์คโชว์ โดยอาจเป็นการสนทนา ร่วมกันหลายคน มีพิธีกรเป็นผู้ดำเนินรายการ คำถามของผู้ฟังสามารถกำหนดทิศทางของการสนทนาได้

หัวข้อยุทธศาสตร์:  เป็นการเชิญชวนให้คิดผ่านประเด็นหรือยุทธศาสตร์ในเชิงลึกร่วมกับคนอื่น เปิดพื้นที่ สำหรับเรียนรู้กันและกัน สิ่งใดได้ผล ไม่ได้ผล และเราจะพัฒนายุทธศาสตร์ใหม่ๆร่วมกันเพื่อสร้างโลกที่ เราใฝ่ฝันได้อย่างไร
