Human Rights Council (HRC)

The Human Rights Council (HRC) is the key intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. It holds three regular sessions a year: in March, June and September. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the secretariat for the HRC.

The HRC works by:

  • Debating and passing resolutions on global human rights issues and human rights situations in particular countries

  • Examining complaints from victims of human rights violations or activist organizations on behalf of victims of human rights violations

  • Appointing independent experts (known as “Special Procedures”) to review human rights violations in specific countries and examine and further global human rights issues

  • Engaging in discussions with experts and governments on human rights issues

  • Assessing the human rights records of all UN Member States every four and a half years through the Universal Periodic Review

AWID works with feminist, progressive and human rights partners to share key knowledge, convene civil society dialogues and events, and influence negotiations and outcomes of the session.

With our partners, our work will:

◾️ Monitor, track and analyze anti-rights actors, discourses and strategies and their impact on resolutions

◾️ Raise awareness of the findings of the 2017 and 2021 OURs Trends Reports.

◾️Support the work of feminist UN experts in the face of backlash and pressure

◾️Advocate for state accountability
 
◾️ Work with feminist movements and civil society organizations to advance rights related to gender and sexuality.

Stacey Park Milbern was a self-identifying queer disabled woman of colour and a trailblazer. A long-standing and respected organizer and leader in the disability rights and justice movement, she also advocated for the rights of many different communities, not just her own. Stacey’s activism had mighty roots in her experience at the intersections of gender, disability, sexuality and race.

Stacey, along with some friends, co-created the Disability Justice Culture Club, a group working to support various and especially vulnerable communities, including helping homeless people gain access to resources during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

She was also a co-producer of an impact campaign for Netflix’s documentary “Crip Camp”, a board member of the WITH Foundation, and led organizations at local, state and national levels. Stacey wrote beautifully and powerfully:

“My ancestors are people torn apart from loves by war and displacement. It’s because of them I know the power of building home with whatever you have, wherever you are, whoever you are with. My ancestors are queers who lived in the American South. It’s because of them I understand the importance of relationships, place and living life big, even if it is dangerous. All of my ancestors know longing. Longing is often our connecting place...” - Stacey Park Milbern

She was born in Seoul, Korea and grew up in North Carolina, later  continuing her journey in the San Francisco Bay Area. Stacey passed away of complications from surgery on her 33rd birthday on 19 May 2020.

Los últimos cinco años han sido muy importantes para AWID.

Hemos contribuido a algunas victorias importantes, como expandir el panorama de financiamiento para los derechos de las mujeres con investigación e incidencia innovadoras y de gran alcance. Al mismo tiempo, hemos sufrido algunos golpes devastadores, como el asesinato de defensoras de derechos humanos como Berta Cáceres de Honduras, Gauri Lankesh de India y Marielle Franco de Brasil, así como el aumento de la movilización de los sectores antiderechos en los espacios de derechos humanos.

Hace cinco años, nos comprometimos con nuestro papel en la construcción de movimientos al generar conocimiento sobre las tendencias de los movimientos antiderechos, así como sobre temas en los que las feministas tienden a involucrarse menos, como los flujos financieros ilícitos. Activamos junto a los movimientos que son nuestrxs compañerxs, fortaleciendo el activismo feminista joven y el activismo intergeneracional y expandiendo la protección integral de lxs defensorxs de derechos humanos. En el cierre del plan estratégico, estamos orgullosxs de nuestros logros y nuestro crecimiento como organización. ¡Terminamos el 2017 con un compromiso renovado, ideas y aprendizaje para sostener la lucha que tenemos por delante!

Esta historia es sobre la manera en que un grupo cada vez más diverso de feministas del Pacífico se organizaron a lo largo de los años para asistir a los Foros de AWID, y el modo en que ese proceso lxs transformó en forma personal, como organizaciones y como movimiento a través de lo que aprendieron, descubrieron y experimentaron. Ilustra la importancia de los Foros como espacio que permitió que una región que tiende a ser marginada o ignorada a nivel global pueda construir una presencia sólida en el movimiento feminista, que luego es replicada en otros espacios internacionales de derechos de las mujeres.

¿Qué es el Foro Internacional de AWID?

Cada tres o cuatro años, AWID celebra su principal evento internacional. Es el mayor foro mundial que concentra a los movimientos feministas y de justicia de género en toda su diversidad. Es una reunión global de activistas feministas, movimientos aliados, académicxs, donantes y formuladorxs de políticas. Los Foros alternan entre distintas regiones y países del Sur global.

De nombreuses participantes vivent les Forums de l’AWID comme un espace de liberté unique où elles sont accueillies et célébrées, telles qu’elles sont. Dans un monde où même les féministes les plus privilégiées ont souvent du mal à s’intégrer, pour celles dont l’identité est criminalisée ou condamnée dans leur contexte quotidien, cette expérience de liberté et de célébration peut être profondément transformatrice (et réparatrice). L’histoire de la façon dont OluTimehin Kukoyi - qui participait pour la première fois - a vécu le Forum des féminismes noirs et le Forum de l’AWID à Bahia (2016) illustre bien cela.

En quoi ce Forum sera-t-il différent ?

Avec jusqu'à 2 500 participant·e·s sur place et 3 000 participant·e·s virtuel·e·s/hybrides, il s'agira du plus grand Forum de l'AWID jamais organisé. Nous envisageons de mettre en place de multiples espaces qui vous permettront d'établir des liens significatifs, d'apprendre, d'échanger, d'avoir des échanges stratégiques, de guérir et de fêter. C'est la première fois que nous nous réunissons dans cet espace depuis la pandémie, et nous brûlons d’impatience.

Comment les féministes s’autofinancent ?

Les organisations féministes et de défense des droits des femmes ne dépendent pas uniquement des financements institutionnels, elles s’autofinancent. Nos mouvements sont animés par la passion, la solidarité, l’engagement politique et le soin collectif.
Ces ressources autonomes et autogénérées sont souvent invisibles dans les budgets, mais elles sont le pilier de notre action collective.

Biography

Ritu es una tecnóloga feminista que aporta su experiencia en el sector sin fines de lucro, movida por la pasión de utilizar enfoques innovadores para encontrar soluciones tecnológicas en clave feminista. Con una maestría en Tecnología de las Aplicaciones Informáticas del Instituto de Tecnología de la India, su función en AWID abarca una diversidad de responsabilidades. Desde la supervisión de la seguridad digital y la gestión de servidores, hasta la administración de las bases de datos, pasando por el desarrollo de capacidades, la evaluación de tecnologías, la implementación de software y soluciones en la nube, Ritu vela por la resiliencia y la efectividad de la infraestructura de las tecnologías de la información de AWID. Antes de incorporarse a AWID, desempeñó un papel fundamental en la promoción de iniciativas tecnológicas en los sectores del medio ambiente y de la promoción de la salud, impulsada por su afán de aprovechar la tecnología en aras del bien social.
