AWID Forum: Co-creating Feminist Futures
In September 2016, the 13th AWID international Forum brought together in Brazil over 1800 feminists and women’s rights advocates in a spirit of resistance and resilience.
This section highlights the gains, learnings and resources that came out of our rich conversations. We invite you to explore, share and comment!
What has happened since 2016?
One of the key takeaways from the 2016 Forum was the need to broaden and deepen our cross-movement work to address rising fascisms, fundamentalisms, corporate greed and climate change.
With this in mind, we have been working with multiple allies to grow these seeds of resistance:
- Our Seed Initiatives, has helped 20 ideas that emerged at the Forum to grow into concrete actions
- The video “Defending people and planet” and guide “Weaving resistance through action” put courageous WHRDs in the spotlight and present concrete strategies they use to confront corporate power.
- With our animations about the State of Our Feminist Movements and Climate and Environmental Justice, movements now have creative tools to support their advocacy work.
- The compiling artistic expressions of our #MovementsMatter series continues to inspire stronger and more creative organizing around the world.
- Movements can also benefit from new methodologies on Visioning Feminist Futures (Coming up soon!)
And through our next strategic plan and Forum process, we are committed to keep developing ideas and deepen the learnings ignited at the 2016 Forum.
What happens now?
The world is a much different place than it was a year ago, and it will continue to change.
The next AWID Forum will take place in the Asia Pacific region (exact location and dates to be announced in 2018).

About the AWID Forum
AWID Forums started in 1983, in Washington DC. Since then, the event has grown to become many things to many peoples: an iterative process of sharpening our analyses, vision and actions; a watershed moment that reinvigorates participants’ feminisms and energizes their organizing; and a political home for women human rights defenders to find sanctuary and solidarity.

À l’AWID, nous concevons ces réalités féministes comme les exemples vivants des mondes que nous savons possibles. Nous concevons ces diverses réalités féministes comme des revendications et des incarnations d’espoir et de pouvoir. Elles sont ancrées dans les multiples manières de vivre, de penser et de faire autrement, que ce soit au niveau des expressions quotidiennes de nos modes de vie ou nos manières d'être en relations les un.e.s avec les autres ou au niveau de systèmes alternatifs de gouvernance et de justice.
Les Réalités féministes combattent les systèmes de pouvoir dominants tels que le patriarcat, le capitalisme et la suprématie blanche.

Snippet FEA Nadia Echazu (EN)
The Nadia Echazú Textile Cooperative carries the name of a pioneer in the struggle for trans rights in Argentina. In many ways, the work of the cooperative celebrates her life and legacy.
Nadia Echazú had a remarkable activist trajectory: she was one of the co-founders of "El Teje", the first trans newspaper in Latin America, alongside Lohana Berkins, Diana Sacayán and Marlene Wayar. Nadia was part of the Argentinian Association of Travestis, Transexual and Transgender people (Asociación de Travestis y Transexuales de Argentina, ATTA) and founded The Organization of Travestis and Transgender People of Argentina (Organización de Travestis y Transexuales de Argentina, OTTRA).
Shortly after her death, her fellow activists founded the cooperative in her name, to honor the deep mark she left on trans and travesti activism in Argentina.

Pourquoi l’AWID a-t-elle choisi de tenir le Forum à Taipei ?
Taipei nous semble être l’emplacement de la région Asie-Pacifique qui nous permet au mieux de bâtir un espace sécurisé et désobéissant pour notre communauté féministe mondiale.
Taipei offre un certain niveau de stabilité et de sécurité aux divers·es participant·e·s du Forum que nous voulons rassembler. La ville dispose aussi de capacités logistiques importantes, en plus d’être accessible pour beaucoup de voyageurs·ses (avec une facilitation de procédure de visa électronique pour les conférences internationales).
Le mouvement féministe sur place est accueillant vis-à-vis du Forum et désire s’engager avec des féministes du monde entier.

هنالك العديد من الأسباب لتعبئة الاستطلاع منها أنه لديك الفرصة لمشاركة تجربتك المعاشة المتعلقة بحشد الموارد لدعم تنظيمك، أن تعمل/ين من منطلق قوة كخبير/ة بما يتعلق بالأموال ولأين تتحرك ولأين تصل وبذلك المشاركة بالجهد المشترك والمناصرة لتحريك التمويلات الأكبر والأفضل. لقد أثبت استطلاع "أين المال" في العشرين عام الأخيرة أنه مصدر أساسي للشركاء/ الشريكات وكذلك للممولين/ات. ندعوك من كل قلبنا للمشاركة بالنسخة الثالثة لتسليط الضوء على الوضع الفعلي للموارد، وتحد الحلول الخاطئة، والإشارة إلى كيفية تغيير التمويل حتى تزدهر الحركات وتواجه التحديات المعقدة في عصرنا.

Эти причины могут разниться: от невозможности подавать заявки на гранты из-за несоответствия требованиями и/или невозможности получения денег из-за рубежа, до использования генерируемых автономно ресурсов, в качестве самостоятельной политической стратегии. Мы хотим услышать ваше мнение, независимо от наличия или отсутствия у вас опыта работы с внешним финансированием.
