Young feminists are an active and integral part of women’s rights movements around the world. We work to support young feminist voices and encourage intergenerational solidarity to advance women’s rights.

WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.

AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us. 

Women human rights defenders (WHRDs) worldwide defend their lands, livelihoods and communities from extractive industries and corporate power. They stand against powerful economic and political interests driving land theft, displacement of communities, loss of livelihoods, and environmental degradation.

The Human Rights Council (HRC) is the key intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. AWID works with partners to share key knowledge, convene civil society dialogues and events, and influence negotiations and outcomes of the session.

The 2016 AWID Forum in Brazil powerfully created a space for re-imagining our feminist futures. Since 1983, the event has become an iterative process of sharpening our analyses and actions; a watershed moment that reinvigorates feminisms; and a political home for women human rights defenders to find sanctuary.

Over the past few years, a troubling new trend at the international human rights level is being observed, where discourses on "protecting the family" are being employed to defend violations committed against family members, to bolster and justify impunity, and to restrict equal rights within and to family life.
