Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Jemimah Naburri-Kaheru
Biography
Jemimah Naburri-Kaheru es una consumada estratega internacional en recursos humanos con gran influencia en la región del Cuerno de África. Anteriormente, se desempeñó como gerente regional de Oficina y Recursos Humanos en Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA, Iniciativa Estratégica para las Mujeres del Cuerno de África). Su influencia se extiende a la dirección de los recursos humanos de más de 70 empleades regionales, debido a que los ingresos anuales de la organización registraron un veloz crecimiento del 40%. A lo largo de su carrera, Jemimah ha organizado iniciativas de reclutamiento sumamente fructíferas, introducido sistemas de desempeño basados en el mérito, y supervisado las relaciones entre el personal y las políticas de recursos humanos. Desempeñó una función crucial brindando apoyo a las estrategias de fuerzas de trabajo globales. Con antecedentes académicos en Estudios sobre el Desarrollo de la Universidad de Makerere (Uganda) y una maestría en Gestión de Recursos Humanos en curso, el compromiso de Jemimah con el desarrollo profesional es más que evidente. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela
Winnie has been described as a “militant firebrand activist” who fought the apartheid regime in South Africa.
She was imprisoned multiple times, and on many occasions placed in solitary confinement.
Ma’Winnie, as she is affectionately remembered, was known for being outspoken about the challenges Black women faced during and after apartheid, having been on the receiving end of these brutalities herself as a mother, wife and activist during the struggle. She transcended the misconception that leadership is gender, class or race-based. Despite being a controversial figure, she is remembered by many by her Xhosa name, “ Nomzamo”, which means "She who endures trials".
Ma’Winnie continues to be an inspiration to many, particularly young South African women for whom her death has spurred a burgeoning movement, with the mantra: "She didn't die, she multiplied."

Ekaete Judith Umoh
Biography
Ekaete Judith Umoh est une défenseure internationale des droits des personnes en situation de handicap et experte en développement inclusif. Elle analyse avec finesse les questions relatives au genre, au handicap et au développement inclusif. Son rêve est d’accroître la visibilité des femmes et des filles en situation de handicap au sein du mouvement féministe international et dans tous les efforts de développement à travers le monde.
Passionnée d’activisme et de politique, Ekaete devient la première femme élue présidente de l’Association nationale des personnes en situation de handicap (Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, JONAPWD), au Nigéria. À ce titre, elle dirige les organisations de personnes en situation de handicap dans la lutte pour la signature de la loi nigériane sur le handicap de 2019, qu’elle défendait sans relâche depuis plus de 17 ans. Par la suite, elle rejoint CBM Global en tant que directrice nationale et joue un rôle pionnier à la tête de son équipe pendant trois ans, pour briser le cercle de la pauvreté et du handicap au Nigéria. Outre son activisme dans le domaine du handicap, Ekaete a été consultante auprès de plusieurs agences de développement, proposant son expertise technique de l’inclusion des personnes en situation de handicap dans la conception de programmes et projets.

El horror de exhibir su cuerpo sólo porque es una mujer surge del hecho de que ella se atrevió a amenazar la hegemonía masculina al convertirse en una combatiente en un campo de batalla que se suponía era solo para hombres».

Alejandra Morena
Biography
Alejandra se passionne pour les droits des femmes et la justice de genre. Elle rêve de créer un monde qui place le soin en son cœur, celui des personnes comme celui de la nature. Experte féministe en droits humains, elle a travaillé dans des domaines en lien avec le genre, le climat, la justice sociale et économique au sein de diverses organisations internationales. Ses domaines d’expertise comprennent le développement des connaissances et la co-création, la recherche, la facilitation et le plaidoyer. Elle est titulaire d’un master en droits humains de l’université d’Essex et a rédigé et co-élaboré de nombreuses publications, dont l’article «Enragée: Femmes et Nature». La campagne Activisme Féministe Sans Peur s’appuie sur des entretiens et des recherches menés par Alejandra.
Originaire d’Argentine, elle a vécu et travaillé dans plusieurs pays d’Europe et d’Amérique latine au cours des vingt dernières années. Alejandra aime la photographie, la mer, préparer des gâteaux avec sa fille et déguster des plats du monde entier. En tant que mère, elle met un point d’honneur à briser le cycle des schémas répétitifs transgénérationnels. Alejandra puise son énergie et son inspiration auprès des femmes extraordinaires qui font partie de sa vie, et qui vivent aux quatre coins du monde.

Jacqueline Coulibaly Ki-Zerbo
Jacqueline était une éducatrice malienne pionnière de la cause féministe et nationaliste.
Elle a d’abord enseigné l'anglais au Sénégal avant d'être recrutée en 1961 par le Lycée Philippe Zinda Kaboré à Ouagadougou, au Burkina Faso. Etant donné son engagement militant, elle a pris part au soulèvement populaire du 3 janvier 1966. Entre 1961 et 1966, Jacqueline était par ailleurs responsable de la presse syndicale, La voix des enseignants. Elle a été nommée directrice du Cours normal des jeunes filles (aujourd’hui connu sous le nom de lycée Nelson Mandela) jusqu'en 1974 et s'est consacrée à l'éducation des filles et à la promotion des droits des femmes.
En 1984, elle a reçu le prix Paul G. Hoffmann pour sa contribution remarquable en matière de développement national et international.

“Gender Ideology” Narratives
For decades, feminist scholars and advocates have articulated important concepts related to gender to understand and challenge oppression and discrimination. Those concepts have now become the target of anti-rights actors who claim that oppressive patriarchal gender roles are “common sense”, strategically painting all other ideas, cultural norms, and forms of social life as a dangerous, conspirative ideology.

What does AWID do?
Annaliza Dinopol Gallardo Capinpin
Known as “Ate Liza,” Annaliza was the president of the Agrarian Reform Council for Mindanao Pioneers, an umbrella group in Tacurong City, Philippines.
A loved mother of four, teacher and community leader, Annaliza is remembered by her community as “she who leads when no one wants to lead, she who talks when no one wants to talk, she who stood with courage to help the agrarian reform beneficiaries to own lands.”
Annaliza was shot dead by unknown assailants in front of the Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU) while on her way to Salabaca National High School in Esperanza.
Her family have said “Naghihintay pa rin kami ng hustisya para sa kanya” (we are still waiting justice for her).
