Young Feminist Activism

Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat

Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.

At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.

A multigenerational approach

AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.

Our Actions

We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

  • Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

  • Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

  • Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

  • Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

  • Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Olivia was the spiritual leader of the Shipibo Konibo indigenous peoples.

A wise Indigenous woman and grandmother, she was known for cultivating traditional medicine and the sacred songs of her people (Íkaros). Olivia Arevalo was an active defender of the cultural and environmental rights of her people. Olivia’s murder occurred in a context of territorial conflict between the Shipibo community and companies that desire to take over their land to cultivate palm oil.

Members of her community have said: “Her death is an aggression against the entire Shipibo community. She was the living memory of her people”.

De la India, Janette era enérgica, extraordinaria, compasiva y amorosa.

Su intolerancia de la injusticia y su firme compromiso de defender los derechos de todas las personas la llevaron a trabajar en TARSHI (una ONG que trabaja en temas de la sexualidad y la salud y derechos sexuales y reproductivos) durante más de 15 años. Janette dirigió con destreza las finanzas, los recursos humanos y los aspectos operativos del trabajo de TARSHI, atravesando hábilmente la laberíntica burocracia a la que están sometidas las ONG indias.

Lxs integrantes de su equipo recuerdan que «Ella se quedaba vigilando, de manera que pudiéramos seguir el rumbo en aguas abiertas. Mujer de muchos talentos, Janette no sólo nos ayudó a conseguir nuestra propia oficina sino que también la diseñó para una utilización óptima». Amaba viajar y a los animales, y estaba interesada en la terapia asistida por animales.

  • Le quatrième Dialogue de haut niveau sur le financement du développement s’est tenu les 23 et 24 mars 2010 sur le thème Le Consensus de Monterrey et la Déclaration de Doha sur le financement du développement : état de la mise en œuvre et responsabilités futures. Dans ce cadre, quatre tables rondes ont été organisées sur les sujets suivants : la réforme des systèmes monétaires et financiers internationaux, l’impact de la crise financière sur les investissements étrangers directs, le commerce international et les flux financiers privés et enfin le rôle de la coopération financière et technique pour le développement – dont celui des nouvelles sources de financement du développement – dans l’optimisation de la mobilisation des ressources nationales et internationales en faveur du développement.
  • Un dialogue interactif informel a également permis à différentes parties prenantes de se concentrer sur le lien qui unit le financement du développement et les objectifs du Millénaire pour le développement.

La Cooperativa Textil Nadia Echazú fue la primera cooperativa creada por y para personas trans y travesti en busca de autonomía económica y condiciones de vida dignas.

Proporciona oportunidades de trabajo, acceso a la seguridad social, ingresos sostenibles y derechos económicos para las comunidades a las que sirve.

Anna a grandi à Lewes, dans le Sussex (Royaume-Uni). Après avoir décidé de ne pas poursuivre sa licence d’anglais à l'Université de Sheffield, elle a déménagé à Bristol et est devenue plombière.

Elle a passé une grande partie de son temps à défendre les personnes marginalisées et défavorisées, à assister à des rassemblements antifascistes et à offrir son soutien aux femmes de la Dale Farm lorsqu'elles furent menacées d'expulsion. Végétalienne et amie des animaux, elle a participé à des missions de sabotage de chasses et son nom est honoré sur le monument commémoratif « Arbre de vie » de l’organisation PETA. Anna s'est rendue à Rojava en mai 2017 pour lutter en faveur du renforcement du pouvoir des femmes, de la pleine représentation de toutes les ethnies et de la protection de l'environnement.

Anna est décédée le 15 mars 2018, après avoir été atteinte par une frappe aérienne turque dans la ville d'Afrin, dans le nord de la Syrie. Anna se battait auprès des forces de protection des femmes (YPJ) quand elle a été tuée.

April 2015: Interactive hearings with the business sector and civil society take place

Informal interactive hearings with the business sector and civil society took place on 8 and 9 April 2015 respectively at UN headquarters in New York.

  • Women’s rights organizations and other CSOs raised concern about the limited participation of Member States during the CSO hearings and thus the Addis Ababa CSO Coordinating Group (ACG) issued a letter to the Co-facilitators
  • The second drafting session of the Addis Ababa outcome document was held from 13 – 17 April 2015 at the UN Headquarters. The basis of discussion was the Zero Draft.
  • The WWG on FfD presented recommendations on the FfD themes to Member States in different official sessions and side events. Among the key areas of concern for women was the fact that the zero draft did not give sufficient emphasis to the enormous, negative impacts of financial crises caused by instability in international financial systems on development, equality and human rights, particularly women’s human rights.

Kagendo is remembered fondly by family and friends as a fierce African feminist activist, artist, and filmmaker.

She dedicated over 20 years to advocate for the rights and dignity of African LGBTIQ and gender non conforming people.

Kagendo’s colleagues remember her as someone with a jovial personality, fierce conviction, and love for life. Kagendo died due to natural causes at her home in Harlem on December 27th, 2017.

On Kagendo’s passing Kenyan writer and activist Shailja Patel noted “Kagendo's lifelong commitment to connecting the dots between all oppressions, showing how colonialism fostered homophobia on the African continent, making Kenya a country where queer Kenyans and free women could live and thrive.”

¿Qué está en juego en este proceso para los derechos de las mujeres?

La financiación para el desarrollo encierra amenazas y oportunidades concretas para los derechos de las mujeres y los derechos humanos de todas las personas. Una financiación y políticas para el desarrollo que sean transformadoras pueden constituir un aporte importante para los cambios sistémicos que se necesitan a fin de garantizar el respeto, la protección y la realización de los derechos humanos de las mujeres.

El año 2015 es importante en el proceso de la FpD. La tercera Conferencia Internacional sobre la FpD tuvo lugar del 13 al 16 de julio de 2015 en Adís Abeba, Etiopía, y los gobiernos están finalizando la Agenda de Desarrollo Post-2015 que incluye acuerdos acerca de cómo se van a financiar los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible.

En su actual etapa, el proceso de la FpD ofrece una oportunidad importante para fijar un marco de financiación que garantice un apoyo financiero efectivo para la implementación de la Agenda Post-2015 y de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS). También constituye una oportunidad para abordar las condiciones estructurales y los cambios sistémicos necesarios para la plena implementación de otras agendas y compromisos como los tratados internacionales de derechos humanos y la Plataforma de Acción de Beijing.

En estos últimos trece años, organizaciones por los derechos de las mujeres y feministas han participado activamente en el proceso de la FpD.
