Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:
Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.
Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.
Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.
Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations
Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Mediante la narración en esta era hiperdigital de las redes sociales, Fatima sigue colaborando con organizadores comunitaries y activistas de base para crear contenido audiovisual, a fin de tender puentes de comprensión hacia la liberación colectiva y la descolonización. Nana est militante féministe et chercheuse spécialisée dans les droits reproductifs et les politiques démographiques. Elle exerce ses activités en Égypte. Elle collabore avec Realizing Sexual and Reproductive Justice (RESURJ), siège au conseil consultatif de l’A Project au Liban et fait partie du comité communautaire de Mama Cash. Nana est diplômée d’un master en santé publique de l’Institut KIT et de l’Université Vrije d’Amsterdam. Son travail consiste à analyser et contextualiser les politiques démographiques nationales tout en documentant les questions liées à l’eugénisme contemporain, aux programmes d’aide internationale régressifs et aux régimes autoritaires. Auparavant, elle a collaboré avec la Fondation genevoise pour la formation et la recherche médicales, l’Initiative égyptienne pour les droits de la personne, ainsi qu’avec le Collectif féministe Ikhtyar au Caire.

The search for alternative means of food production based on environmental sustainability is gaining ground across regions. This worldwide search comes with a common characteristic: the need to involve rural people and particularly women, building on their local priorities and knowledge by employing the principle of agroecology.
Definition
Agroecology is a way of practicing agriculture or using technologies that do not harm the environment. It proposes breaking with the hegemonic rural development model based on large landed estates and single-crop plantations that benefit mostly agricultural businesses and entrenches social exclusion.
In family farming, agroecology manifests as a resistance to the current development model and its social, cultural, environmental, and economic problems. It opposes the lack of the farmer’s financial capital autonomy; and it symbolizes a resistance to the current agribusiness model.
Feminist perspective
Efforts based solely on agroecology may not be sufficient to solve all problems of women’s marginalization and invisibility. A feminist perspective is then crucial to analyze the norms associated with the idea of family as currently constituted as the perfect institution, as well as with the condition of women’s subordination.
In simpler terms, it is important to include in this debate a reflection on socially constructed gender roles to advance the emancipatory potential of agroecology.
Member states and women's rights advocates and organisations are gathering at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 13 - 24 March for the 61st Commission on the Status of Women to address ‘women’s economic empowerment’ in the context of Sustainable Development Goal 5.

We are thrilled that AWID member Nayani Thiyagarajah is attending CSW this year and will take over the AWID Instagram. She will be available onsite to connect with other members for a possible feature on our Instagram. She will also explore possibilities of including some AWID members in a short film on the theme, ‘The personal is political’, a story of Nayani’s participation in this year’s CSW.
Nayani Thiyagarajah
Who is Nayani?
Nayani Thiyagarajah is a director, producer, and writer, dedicated to stories for the screen. A daughter of the Tamil diaspora, she calls Toronto home. For over 10 years, Nayani has worked in the arts and cultural industries. Her first independent feature documentary Shadeism: Digging Deeper (2015) had its World Premiere at the 2015 Zanzibar International Film Festival, where it won a Special Jury Prize. Nayani recently launched [RE]FRAME, with her producing partner Camaro West, a production company based out of Atlanta and Toronto, focused on re-framing the narratives around Black, Indigenous, and other people of colour through storytelling on screen.
On a more serious note, it should be noted that Nayani has a strange laugh, she's quite awkward, and her head is always in the clouds. She feels blessed beyond belief to create stories for the screen and play make believe for a living. Above all else, she believes in love.

Estamos presenciando un nivel de participación sin precedentes de actores anti-derechos en los espacios internacionales de derechos humanos. Para reforzar su impacto y amplificar sus voces, estxs actores se dedican cada vez más a la construcción de alianzas tácticas que atraviesan sectores, fronteras regionales y nacionales y credos religiosos.
Esta «alianza non-santa» conformada por actores conservadores de tradición religiosa católica, evangélica, mormona, ortodoxa rusa y musulmana, ha encontrado una causa común en una serie de discursos compartidos y acciones de incidencia que intentan hacer retroceder los logros de lxs feministas y del movimiento de derechos sexuales a nivel internacional.

Actividades principales: La «Santa Sede», como gobierno de la iglesia católica romana, utiliza su condición singular de estado Observador Permanente en la ONU para ejercer presión a favor de nociones conservadoras, patriarcales y heteronormativas de la feminidad, las identidades de género o «la familia» y para difundir políticas contra el aborto y la anticoncepción.

La OIC intenta crear lagunas en la protección de los derechos humanos a partir de referencias a la religión, la cultura o la soberanía nacional. Iglesia ortodoxa rusa
Actividades principales: La iglesia ortodoxa rusa, capitalizando sus estrechos vínculos con el Estado ruso, ha actuado como un agente promotor de cambios en las normas en debates internacionales sobre derechos humanos. Rusia y su iglesia ortodoxa han cooptado el lenguaje de los derechos para poner el acento en la «moralidad» y en los «valores tradicionales» como supuestas fuentes principales de los derechos humanos. Rusia lideró una serie de resoluciones sobre «valores tradicionales» ante el Consejo de Derechos Humanos y es la primera en presentar enmiendas hostiles a las resoluciones progresistas en áreas como la mortalidad materna, la protección del espacio para la sociedad civil y el derecho a la protesta pacífica.
