Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

As a global feminist movement support organization we know that working with fierce feminisms is our way forward, acknowledging both the multiplicity of feminisms and the value of fierce and unapologetic drive for justice. The state of the world and of feminist movements calls for brave conversations and action. We look forward to working together with our members, partners and funders in creating the worlds we believe in, celebrating the wins and speaking truth to power in service of feminist movements globally.

Rosane Santiago Silveira
Rosane Santiago Silveira was affectionately known as Rô Conceição. A Brazilian environmental and human rights activist, she fervently fought to protect the environment where it was most threatened.
This included defending it on the island of Barra Velha, where it was endangered by oil exploration, as well as safeguarding it by campaigning against land-grabbing and expansion of eucalyptus plantations in Bahia State, where Rosane was a member of the Cassurubá Extractivist Reserve Council.

She was part of trade union activities, human rights and cultural movements. Rosane dedicated much of herself to causes that were not only close to her but are also of concern to land, forests, rivers, and communities whose rights and lives are continuously at risk.
She was tortured and murdered on 29 January 2019 in Nova Viçosa, a city in southern Bahia.
“Unfortunately, today there is a feeling of total insecurity, because of the State’s absence in prosecuting these crimes. «Soy una maravilla... ¡Por lo tanto, he nacido de una madre! Cuando comienzo a balbucear, Mi vida ha sido como ninguna otra...» - Ayanda Denge (lee el poema completo más abajo)
Ayanda Denge fue unx mujer trans, trabajadorx sexual, activista, poeta. Era una xhosa de Puerto Elizabeth, en el Cabo Oriental de Sudáfrica. Después de viajar por diferentes ciudades del país, se mudó a Ciudad del Cabo.
Como comprometida y ferviente activista por la justicia social, luchó por los derechos de lxs trabajadorxs sexuales, de las personas trans y de quienes viven con VIH y SIDA. Era también conferencista motivacional para concientizar sobre el cáncer, y hacía campaña por viviendas sociales económicas, en especial, para la gente pobre y de clase trabajadora. Ayanda se erguía, alta como una montaña, contra los distintos y, a menudo, abusivos rostros de la discriminación.
«Ser transgénero no es una dosis doble, sino una dosis triple de estigmatización y discriminación. Te discriminan por tu identidad sexual, te discriminan por tu trabajo, y te discriminan por tu estatus de VIH.» - Ayanda Denge, 2016
Ayanda presidía la organización Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Taskforce (SWEAT) [ Grupo de Trabajo para la Educación y la Defensa de Trabajadorxs Sexuales], y trabajaba también como coordinadora de promoción comunitaria en Sisonke, un movimiento nacional de trabajadorxs sexuales de Sudáfrica.
«Desde nosotrxs, desde nuestra sede regional, hasta SWEAT, de la que integro la Junta Directiva, o hasta Sisonke, un movimiento de trabajadorxs sexuales de Ciudad del Cabo, todxs nos amalgamamos, tenemos un solo grito y es un grito que ha sido reconocido internacionalmente por lxs trabajadorxs sexuales internacionales. Queremos la descriminalización del trabajo sexual.» - Ayanda Denge, 2016
Vivía en la Ahmed Kathrada House, que estaba siendo ocupada por la campaña Reclaim the City [Recuperar la Ciudad] en favor de las viviendas sociales. En 2018, Ayanda fue elegida líder de la casa. El 24 de marzo de 2019 fue apuñalada en su habitación. El año anterior, otrx residente había sido asesinadx.
Reclaim the City señala una conexión entre la seguridad de lxs residentes de la casa, el corte del servicio de electricidad por parte del gobierno provincial, y el derecho humano al agua:
«No podemos separar la seguridad de las mujeres y de las personas LGBTQI que están viviendo en la casa ocupada de la negativa a reestablecer los servicios de electricidad y agua en la Ahmed Kathrada House por parte del gobierno de la Provincia del Cabo Occidental.
De noche, la casa está completamente oscura. Necesitamos luces para protegernos unxs a otrxs. Es como si la Provincia quisiera castigar a la gente pobre y de clase trabajadora, cuyo único crimen es necesitar un hogar. Si bien pueden estar en desacuerdo con nuestros motivos por ocuparla, deberían avergonzarse de priorizar la política en detrimento de la seguridad y la dignidad de lxs residentes de esta ciudad.
Descansa en paz, camarada Ayanda Denge. Te recordaremos mientras mantenemos viva la llama de la lucha por una vivienda decente y bien ubicada.»

«Ayanda era una activista por naturaleza. Sabía cuáles eran sus derechos y no le importaba pelear por los derechos de otrxs. Para mí, no fue una sorpresa que se involucrara en muchas organizaciones, y era sabido que era una persona de la gente. Ella representaba no solo los derechos de las personas LGBTI, representaba los derechos de todxs.» - hermana de Ayanda

Es una gran satisfacción para AWID compartir contigo nuestro Informe Anual 2014.
En el año que pasó, nuestro trabajo abarcó desde la construcción de conocimientos en temáticas de derechos humanos de las mujeres hasta la amplificación de las respuestas a la violencia contra las defensoras de derechos humanos, y continuamos fortaleciendo a los movimientos feministas y por los derechos de las mujeres en todo el mundo.
Lee el informe para conocer mejor cómo desarrollamos las capacidades de nuestra membresía y de nuestras bases de apoyo en general, cómo presionamos con fuerza para que los derechos de las mujeres estuvieran en la agenda de los procesos internacionales más importantes de desarrollo y derechos humanos, y cómo ayudamos a incrementar la cobertura de las temáticas y los procesos organizativos por los derechos de las mujeres en distintos medios. En el informe encontrarás una muestra panorámica de nuestros proyectos y algunas cifras concretas que demuestran nuestro impacto.
La colaboración ocupa un lugar central en todo lo que hacemos y esperamos con entusiasmo continuar trabajando juntas el año próximo para llevar a nuestros movimientos al nivel que sigue.
Un adelanto del informe
A pesar de un panorama cada vez más problemático, existen importantes señales de esperanza para avanzar en las agendas de los derechos de las mujeres. Las activistas por los derechos de las mujeres continúan siendo vitales para abrir espacios que les permitan reclamar un cambio estructural, sostener a sus comunidades, oponerse a la violencia y mantener las conquistas fundamentales. Existen también oportunidades muy importantes para influir sobre nuevas/os actoras/es y movilizar mayores recursos para apoyar a las organizaciones por los derechos de las mujeres.
Es en este contexto que la acción colectiva firme y los procesos de organización entre activistas por los derechos de las mujeres siguen siendo decisivos.

Desde siempre el feminismo sostiene que lo personal es político. El Festival Crear, Resister, Transform generó espacios en los que el feminismo pudo discutir las cuestiones relativas al cuerpo, el género y las sexualidades, y analizar las interconexiones de estos asuntos entendidos como experiencias profundas del cuerpo y, a la vez, un terreno en los que los derechos están en constante disputa y riesgo en la sociedad.
El poder de los movimientos feministas radica en el modo de organizarnos y emprender acciones coordinadas, no solo en nuestras propias comunidades y movimientos, sino también con otras causas y grupos aliados por la justicia social. El espacio brindó la oportunidad de que los movimientos compartieran y reforzaran los procesos de organización y las estrategias tácticas de forma mutua.
La pandemia mundial sanitaria del COVID-19 ha puesto de manifiesto como nunca antes el fracaso del capitalismo neoliberal, expuesto las fallas de nuestros sistemas y acentuado la necesidad de construir nuevas realidades y las oportunidades para ello. Una recuperación económica y social feminista exige el trabajo conjunto. Esta edición, en alianza con Kohl: una publicación para la investigación sobre cuerpo y género, analizará soluciones, propuestas y realidades feministas para transformar nuestro mundo actual, nuestros cuerpos y nuestras sexualidades.
