Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Nos droits en danger : il est temps d’agir
Un réseau complexe et mouvant d’acteur·rice·s antidroits exerce aujourd’hui une influence croissante dans les espaces internationaux et nationaux, ainsi qu’au niveau des politiques locales. Les antidroits pénètrent les espaces multilatéraux de collaboration entre pays, dans le but de les transformer et les saboter de l’intérieur. C’est en s’appropriant le langage des droits et de la justice pour travestir leurs véritables intentions qu’ils et elles parviennent à acquérir une certaine légitimité.
Ce rapport est le deuxième d’une série sur les droits humains, produite par l’Observatoire sur l’universalité des droits (OUR). Outre une analyse des principales parties antidroits, de leurs discours, stratégies et impacts, ce rapport inclut des nouvelles féministes pleines d’inspiration et des exercices de renforcement des connaissances qui nous permettront d’assurer notre résistance collective.
Les conséquences sur nos droits sont déjà importantes, mais il est encore possible de réagir. Nous pouvons toutes et tous participer à la résistance face aux programmes antidroits et récupérer nos droits.

Reclaim Power to #FreezeFascisms: Resources for Feminists to Survive & Thrive
Feminist and gender justice movements continue to be chronically underfunded in the face of global funding cuts and freezes. Particularly in Global South regions with shrinking civic spaces, resource scarcity has impacted the most vulnerable communities.
In the face of these setbacks, AWID has updated the Who Can Fund Me? Database - an easy-to-use, practical tool for movements looking for funders from philanthropic foundations, multilateral funders to women’s and feminist funds to support vital lifesaving efforts.
¡Somos quienes hemos estado esperando!
Estamos comenzando un nuevo año: 2023. El COVID-19 continúa infectando y re infectando a muchas, muchas personas en todo el mundo. Estamos siendo testigos del resurgimiento de gobiernos de derecha y fascistas, incluso en lugares que quizás no esperábamos, como Suecia. La guerra, los conflictos armados y el aumento dramático de la militarización, el militarismo y el gasto militar están permitiendo la acumulación descomedida de capital por parte de unos pocos, con la participación de alianzas aparentemente "extrañas" que se arman, tanto de manera visible como invisible, donde las élites económicas y políticas del Norte y el Sur Global se están beneficiando más allá de nuestra imaginación más desenfrenada. Nosotres, el personal y la Junta Directiva de AWID, estamos más preparades e inspirades que nunca para enfrentar los desafíos, fortaleciendo nuestras relaciones con nuestra membresía y organizaciones socias, reuniéndonos y conociendo a quienes aún tenemos que conocer y hacer lo que hacemos mejor: apoyar a los movimientos feministas globales. Aunque nos entristeció la partida de nuestras queridas ex-co-eds Cindy y Hakima, nuestras maravillosas nuevas co-eds Faye e Inna, junto con el personal comprometido y creativo, han aprovechado el momento que encapsula tanto las oportunidades como las amenazas.
Sin duda, todes nosotres en AWID y toda la gente de nuestro movimiento lo sabemos… como escribió la poeta y activista caribeña estadounidense June Jordan a las mujeres activistas sudafricanas durante el apogeo del régimen del apartheid: “¡Somos quienes hemos estado esperando!”

How about climate justice, is this really the time for so many international flights?
Asking ourselves the same question, we believe there are no simple answers. For many participants the AWID Forum might be one of the few international trips they undertake in their life. The pandemic taught us the possibilities but also the limitations of virtual spaces for movement-building: there is nothing like in-person connection. Movements need cross-border connections to build our collective power in the face of the threats we face, notably the climate crisis. We believe that the upcoming AWID Forum can be a strategic space to hold these conversations and to explore alternatives to international travel. The hybrid element of the Forum is an important part of this exploration.

Ces ressources autonomes et autogénérées sont souvent invisibles dans les budgets, mais elles sont le pilier de notre action collective.
