Women Human Rights Defenders
WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.
The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.
Risks and threats targeting WHRDs
WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.
By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:
- Physical assault and death
- Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
- Judicial harassment and criminalization
- Burnout
A collaborative, holistic approach to safety
We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership
- to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
- to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk
We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:
- emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
- documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
- promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
- building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles
Our Actions
We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.

Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to strengthen responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.

Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;

Increasing the visibility and recognition of WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:

Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

Alejandra Laprea is curating the Latin & Central American program, which we’ll launch in September during AWID’s Crear, Résister, Transform: A Festival for Feminist Movements. Thanks to our global feminist community! From May to August 2024, nearly 1,200 organizations working for Women's rights, gender justice, and LBTQI+ equality shared their experiences in the WITM survey. The results offer a unique picture of how feminist movements are resourced and where gaps remain.

Cartas de amor a los movimientos feministas: una carta de Inna y Faye
Queridos movimientos feministas,
El amor es lo que mantiene encendido nuestro fuego feminista. Junto con el cuidado de nuestras comunidades, la ira y la rabia ante la injusticia, y el coraje para actuar.
En septiembre de 2022, asumimos con gran entusiasmo nuestros roles de liderazgo en AWID, como Co-Directoras Ejecutivas. Sentimos el calor y el abrazo de la sororidad feminista cuando ustedes nos recibieron.
Reflexionando sobre nuestras memorias más preciadas como feministas, recordamos momentos poderosos de unión en protestas callejeras, análisis agudos y voces valientes que sacuden el status quo en las reuniones. Mantuvimos esas conversaciones íntimas hasta bien entrada la noche, nos reímos durante horas y bailamos juntes en fiestas.
Es necesario alimentar los fuegos feministas, especialmente en tiempos difíciles cuando no faltan los desafíos externos, desde la crisis climática y el ascenso de las fuerzas de derecha, hasta las economías explotadoras y los patrones persistentes de opresión dentro de nuestros propios movimientos sociales. Son estos fuegos, que arden por todas partes, los que iluminan nuestros caminos y nos mantienen calientes, pero no podemos ignorar los efectos agotadores de la violencia política y la represión dirigida contra muchas de nuestras luchas, movimientos y comunidades
Entendemos el deseo de cambiar el mundo como un ingrediente esencial de la organización feminista. Nunca podemos olvidar que somos quienes hemos estado esperando, en la construcción de alternativas y la configuración de nuestro futuro. Sin embargo, la vibrante energía feminista no puede darse por sentada y debe salvaguardarse de muchas maneras. En este sentido, seguiremos vigilantes. Mejor y más equitativo acceso a la atención y el bienestar, a la sanación y al placer, no son solo instrumentales para prevenir el agotamiento y sostener nuestros movimientos, aunque esa es una función importante; ante todo, son la forma en que esperamos vivir nuestras vidas.
Estamos encantades de arremangarnos y trabajar con ustedes. El nuevo plan estratégico de AWID "Fierce Feminisms: Together We Rise" (“Feminismos Osados: Juntos Nos Levantamos”) refleja nuestra convicción de que ahora es el momento de ser desenfadades y sin temores en nuestras agendas mientras hacemos un esfuerzo por conectar a través de los movimientos y llegar a conocer verdaderamente las realidades individuales, para que podamos ponernos en pie juntes, porque, para nosotres, este es el único camino.
¡Nuestros planes incluyen el tan esperado Foro de AWID! Esperamos conocerles a todes en persona y en línea en 2024. Escuchamos de ustedes la necesidad de conectarse y recargar energías, descansar y sanar, ser desafiados e inspirados, compartir buena comida y reír y bailar juntes. Pocas cosas en este mundo son tan poderosas y transformadoras, como la unión de feministas de todas partes del mundo, y realmente esperamos con ansias por este momento, porque sabemos la magia que podemos crear juntes.

Jaitun
Jaitun, commonly referred to as ‘Amma’, was committed to ensuring the reproductive rights of women and girls in India. She was particularly dedicated to advocating for those living in poverty and who are most marginalized, including Dalit and Muslim women and girls.
Jaitun was the vital force behind the case Jaitun v Janpura Maternity Home & Ors. Her perseverance for justice led to a ground-breaking judgment issued by the High Court of Delhi, holding the Indian government accountable for failing to deliver a number of its legally-binding obligations such as reproductive health care and the right to food.
Her daughter Fatema who was living under the poverty line was denied reproductive services and had to deliver her child in public, under a tree. At the time, both Jaitun and Fatema were homeless as a result of their home being demolished by the government as part of redevelopment and gentrification in New Delhi.

Jaitun has inspired many other women living in poverty to claim their rights. She passed away in 2017.

Her roaring courage; her imitable humour - we used to compare her to the Bollywood actress Hema Melini - as she would be upset we had spent so much time away from her - she would say, with a twinkle in her eye, ‘You have forgotten Amma, Amma is not speaking to you’ and then with great dramatics turn her back, only to turn around laughing and stretching her arms out for a hug. Her kindness and ultimately her love and joy for love and the right for all of us to live with dignity. I miss her terribly.” - Jameen Kaur
What is the 14th AWID Forum theme?
The 14th Forum theme is “Feminist Realities: our power in action”.
We understand Feminist Realities as the different ways of existing and being that show us what is possible, despite dominant power systems, and in defiance and resistance to them. We understand these feminist realities as reclamations and embodiments of hope and power, and as multi-dimentional, dynamic and rooted in specific contexts and historical moments.

Je n'ai jamais su que j'avais une famille proche qui m'aime et qui veut que je m'épanouisse, Ma mère a toujours été là pour moi, mais je n'aurais jamais imaginé que j'aurais des milliers de familles qui ne sont pas liées à moi par le sang.
J'ai découvert que les familles ne sont pas seulement des personnes liées par le sang, mais des personnes qui vous aiment inconditionnellement, sans se soucier de votre orientation sexuelle, de votre état de santé, de votre statut social ou de votre race.
Je pense aux moments précieux où j'ai écouté toutes mes sœurs du monde entier qui sont des féministes fortes, des personnes que je n'ai pas rencontré.e.s physiquement, mais qui me soutiennent, m'enseignent, se battent pour moi : je suis à court de mots, les mots ne peuvent pas exprimer à quel point je vous aime, vous les mentor.esse.s et les autres féministes, vous êtes une mère, une sœur, une amie pour des millions de filles.
Vous êtes incroyables, vous vous êtes battu.e.s pour des personnes que vous ne connaissez pas - et c'est ce qui vous rend si spéciales.aux.
Cela me fait plaisir de l'exprimer par écrit.
Je vous aime tou.te.s et je continuerai à vous aimer. Je n'ai vu aucun.e d'entre vous physiquement, mais il me semble que nous nous connaissons depuis des décennies.

Isabel Cabanillas de la Torre
Isabel Cabanillas de la Torre fue una activista joven y una artista feminista muy querida de Ciudad Juárez, México, conocida por sus hermosos diseños evocadores de indumentaria pintada a manoen los que los ojos eran una característica emblemática de su trabajo. Sus murales transformaron los edificios abandonados y vacíos del centro de Ciudad Juárez, al sumarles vida y crítica política a sus paredes.
A través de su arte y de su activismo político, Isabel buscó llamar la atención sobre la violencia de género que se extendía por su ciudad natal. Colaboró como voluntaria con la red Mesa de Mujeres en el proyecto «Observatorio Ciudadano de Género», que monitoreaba la actuación de jueces, fiscales y defensorxs públicxs en casos de femicidios y otras violaciones a los derechos basadas en el género. Integró también «Hijas De Su Maquilera Madre», una colectiva feminista cuyo nombre alude a las hijas de madres que son trabajadoras de la maquila. Algunas de estas madres fueron las primeras víctimas de femicidio en Ciudad Juárez.
El último proyecto de Isabel (todavía en curso) fue una instalación artística para protestar contra una compañía canadiense que quería extraer cobre de los Médanos de Samalayuca.
El 18 de enero de 2020 Isabel fue atacada a balazos mientras volvía a su casa del centro de Ciudad Juárez en bicicleta, víctima, aparentemente, de un asesinato selectivo. Su cuerpo fue encontrado junto a su bicicleta.
El asesinato de Isabel desató una nueva ola de indignación contra los femicidios de la región: cientos de personas marcharon hacia el puente de la frontera entre EEUU y México, y lo bloquearon durante horas mientras cantaban «Ni una más», que es la protesta continua de las colectivas feministas contra los asesinatos de las mujeres en todo México. Solamente en 2019, 3.142 mujeres y niñas fueron asesinadas en el país; muchas de ellas fueron atacadas específicamente por su género.

What will be different about this Forum?
We have always worked towards ensuring that our Forums are co-developed with partners, movements and our priority constituencies.
For our upcoming Forum, we aim to deepen and strengthen that spirit and practice of co-creation and collaboration. We also recognize the need to improve the balance between the inclusion of many voices and experiences with room for participants and staff to breathe, take pause and enjoy some downtime.
This Forum will be different in the following ways:
- We will have far less organized Forum activities because we want people to have time to engage, experience, process, talk to each other, etc. This is key to communicate: you can come to the Forum, be very engaged and active and not facilitate any organized activity (or “session”).
- We will have Open Spaces - at least one whole afternoon without any organized activities - but also physical spaces available throughout the Forum for people to self-organize meetings, etc.
- We have a Content and Methodology Committee made up of feminists from different regions with expertise on participatory methodologies to support us and all those leading activities at the Forum to use creative and engaging formats for the Forum activities.

Coming Out at the Highest Point in My Life: The Black Feminisms Forum
Many participants experience the AWID Forums as a unique space of freedom where they are embraced and celebrated as they are. In a world where even the most privileged feminists often find themselves not fully fitting in, for those whose identities are criminalized or otherwise condemned in their everyday contexts this experience of freedom and celebration can be deeply transformative (and restorative). The story of how OluTimehin Kukoyi – a first time participant – experienced the Black Feminist Forum (BFF) and the AWID Forum in Bahia (2016) powerfully illustrates this.

Aïssata Kane
Aïssata Kane, surnommée affectueusement “Yaye Kadia” (Mère Kadia), a de tout temps été une féministe engagée dans la défense des droits des femmes africaines, et particulièrement mauritaniennes.
Au cours de sa carrière politique, en 1975, elle fut nommée ministre de la protection de la famille et des affaires sociales et travailla avec ardeur à l’amélioration du statut des femmes dans son pays; c’était la première fois qu'une femme occupait un tel poste.
Ce travail consista notamment à promouvoir l’éducation des filles et des femmes, à lutter contre la pratique du gavage sur les jeunes femmes, à faire pression pour l’inclusion d’une disposition sur les droits maritaux et à plaider en faveur de la création d’un quota de représentation féminine au Parlement.

Ayant fondé l'Union nationale des femmes de Mauritanie (UNFM), elle avait cocréé et publié pour elles le magazine Marienou, dédié à l’émancipation des femmes mauritaniennes. Aïssata dirigea également plusieurs organisations sous-régionales et locales, notamment en tant que présidente de l'Association internationale des femmes francophones (AIFF) et, en écologiste résolue, fut présidente de l'Association pour la protection de l'environnement en Mauritanie (APEM).
En 2018, on lui décerna le Prix de la Femme africaine pionnière. Ce prix honore son engagement à faire progresser le statut de la femme en Mauritanie et reconnaît son grand leadership et son sens de l'innovation.
Aïssata est décédée le 10 août 2019.
