Women Human Rights Defenders
WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.
The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.
Risks and threats targeting WHRDs
WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.
By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:
- Physical assault and death
- Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
- Judicial harassment and criminalization
- Burnout
A collaborative, holistic approach to safety
We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership
- to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
- to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk
We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:
- emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
- documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
- promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
- building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles
Our Actions
We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.

Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to strengthen responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.

Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;

Increasing the visibility and recognition of WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:

Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

I know you are so close. You can feel it can't you? How things need to shift and you need to centre yourself.
This is a letter to tell you to do it. Choose your healing. Choose to be OK. Better than OK. Choose to be whole, to be happy. To cry tears for yourself and no one else. Choose to shut out the world and tell them that 'you will be back in 5 mins'. Or five days. Or five years.
Or never.

Allow yourself to drop everything and sprint off into the jungle. Befriend a daisy clad nymph, start a small library in the roots of a tree. Dance naked and howl at the moonlight. Converse with Oshun at the river bed.
Or simply drink a cup of tea when you need to take a moment to breathe.
Give yourself permission to disappear into the mist and reappear three countries over as a mysterious chocolatier with a sketchy past and penchant for dramatic cloaks and cigars.
Or stop answering work calls on weekends.
Let yourself swim to deserted island with a lover and dress only in the coconut shells from coconut rum that you make and sip at sunset.
Or say no when you don't have the capacity to create space for someone.
The options for holding yourself are endless.
Whatever you do, know the world will always keep spinning. That's the beauty and the pain of it. No matter who or what you choose over yourself and your soul the world will always keep spinning.
Therefore, choose you.
In the morning when that first light hits, choose you. When it’s lunchtime and it’s time to cry on company time, choose you. In the evening, when you are warming up leftovers because you didn’t have time to cook again, choose you. When anxiety wakes you up and existence is silent at 3:45 am.
Choose you.
Because the world will always keep twirling on a tilt and you deserve to have someone always trying to make it right side up for you.

Veena Singh
Biography
Originaire des Fidji, Veena Singh est féministe et femme de couleur. Élevée dans une petite commune rurale de ces îles, elle tire sa force de la richesse de son héritage mixte (sa mère est une femme autochtone fidjienne et son père est de descendance indo-fidjienne). L’identité et le vécu de Veena ont largement façonné son engagement envers la justice, l’équité et l’inclusion. Avec plus d’une vingtaine d’années d’expérience dans les droits humains, l’égalité des genres, l’épanouissement de la communauté et l’inclusion sociale, Veena croit passionnément qu’il faut faire bouger les lignes du pouvoir pour provoquer le changement transformateur qui permettra de construire l’économie de la bienveillance. Elle travaille dans des domaines très divers, notamment l’épanouissement de la communauté ; les femmes, la paix et la sécurité ; les politiques sociales ; les droits humains ; et le plaidoyer politique.
Elle est profondément engagée à faire avancer l’inclusion, la paix et la justice, la santé et les droits sexuels et reproductifs, la justice climatique, la justice transitionnelle et les droits humains. Elle possède une vaste expérience des réseaux de terrain, des organisations internationales et des institutions gouvernementales, et elle place toujours au centre les approches pilotées à l’échelle locale et par les communautés ainsi que les principes féministes.
En dehors de sa « vie de bureau », Veena est une défenseuse de l’environnement, de la santé mentale et c’est aussi une écrivaine. Mère de 11 chats, elle ne jure que par les saris et a un gros faible pour le courrier traditionnel et les cartes postales. Observatrice attentive des mouvements féministes aux Fidji et dans le Pacifique, Veena est en plein parcours personnel pour « décoloniser sa pensée et soi-même, en entreprenant une introspection radicale ». Par-dessus tout, elle est animée par le désir et le rêve de livrer des écrits auxquels pouvoir s’identifier, qui résonnent auprès des autres, en connectant avec la diaspora du Pacifique et en amplifiant les voix marginalisées.

Actores anti-derechos

Nilcéa Freire
Nilcéa Freire was a Brazilian feminist activist, politician and academic. A persevering advocate for women’s rights and those of underrepresented minorities in the country, her life and work carried a long history of struggles and victories.
"While resisting we have to keep pushing for progress, and what we can achieve at this time, in my view, will be through the stupendous organization of young white women, and especially black women, in all of the state capitals and large cities of Brazil." - Nilcéa Freire
In 1999 she became the first woman to occupy the position of Dean at the State University of Rio de Janeiro. Here, she spearheaded the implementation of the first affirmative action policy for students graduating from public schools, requiring reserved places specifically for low-income black students in a public university. This system was adopted in dozens of other public universities.
Some years later, Nilcéa headed the Special Secretariat of Policies for Women in the government of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. In this capacity, she led the first National Women’s Conference. Over 12,000 women from across the country participated and the result of this collective work was embodied in the National Plan for Policies for Women.
Her commitment to women, Afro-Brazilians and indigenous peoples was also strongly reflected in her work to promote their rights through initiatives of the Brazil Ford Foundation office where she was a regional director.
The feminist activist Manoela Miklos recounted Nilcéa to be "a woman without equal".
At the age of 66, Nilcéa passed away in Rio de Janeiro on 29 December 2019 of cancer.

«Mientras estaba en la primera línea de la protesta, fui sometida a violencia sexual, a lesiones físicas y a otras formas de violencia. Pero no me detendré hasta que logremos pleno gobierno civil en Sudán. Debemos impedir la militarización del Estado. Nuestros cuerpos no deben seguir siendo tratados como campos de batalla»
dijo Amal,1 una manifestante de 23 años.2
Durante los últimos cuatro años, las mujeres lideraron la revolución en Sudán. Su liderazgono fue solo callejero, sino que constituyó el poder que impulsó la resistencia constante en todos los niveles. Las mujeres y las jóvenes feministas se convirtieron en la conciencia alerta del movimiento de cambio y democratización sudanés. Desde la primera protesta del 13 de diciembre de 2018 contra el régimen anterior, en la ciudad de Aldmazein, en el área de conflicto del Nilo Azul, las jóvenes estudiantes fueron las voces que demandaron el fin de la dictadura de los militares y los Hermanos Musulmanes, que ya lleva treinta años en el poder.
El movimiento feminista, liderado por mujeres de entre 16 y 35 años, ha entablado una revolución dentro de la revolución en Sudán durante los últimos cuatro años de lucha ininterrumpida. Las potentes voces de las jóvenes que ocupan espacios en las calles, las redes sociales, la sociedad civil y las organizaciones políticas se elevaron lo suficiente como para reconfigurar la opinión pública y desafiar las normas sociales. Por primera vez en la historia de Sudán, las discusiones sobre violencia sexual y de género y sobre los tabúes de la violencia doméstica y los procesos de toma de decisiones dominados por los hombres se convirtieron en debates generalizados. Biography
Caroline ha estado de forma periódica en AWID; en fechas anteriores, organizó los foros de 2005 y 2008 en Bangkok y Ciudad del Cabo, y cumplió otras funciones institucionales. Antes de incorporarse a AWID, impartió clases de inglés de pregrado, luego abandonó el ámbito académico para dirigir el Festival Internacional de Cine Asiático de Toronto y trabajar en otros proyectos. Leah Tumbalang
Leah Tumbalang fue una mujer lumad de Mindanao, en Filipinas. La historia del pueblo indígena lumad abarca generaciones de resistencia contra la minería corporativa a gran escala, de protección de los territorios ancestrales, los recursos y la cultura, y de lucha por la autodeterminación.

Ekaete Judith Umoh
Biography
Ekaete Judith Umoh est une défenseure internationale des droits des personnes en situation de handicap et experte en développement inclusif. Elle analyse avec finesse les questions relatives au genre, au handicap et au développement inclusif. Son rêve est d’accroître la visibilité des femmes et des filles en situation de handicap au sein du mouvement féministe international et dans tous les efforts de développement à travers le monde.
Passionnée d’activisme et de politique, Ekaete devient la première femme élue présidente de l’Association nationale des personnes en situation de handicap (Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, JONAPWD), au Nigéria. À ce titre, elle dirige les organisations de personnes en situation de handicap dans la lutte pour la signature de la loi nigériane sur le handicap de 2019, qu’elle défendait sans relâche depuis plus de 17 ans. Par la suite, elle rejoint CBM Global en tant que directrice nationale et joue un rôle pionnier à la tête de son équipe pendant trois ans, pour briser le cercle de la pauvreté et du handicap au Nigéria. Outre son activisme dans le domaine du handicap, Ekaete a été consultante auprès de plusieurs agences de développement, proposant son expertise technique de l’inclusion des personnes en situation de handicap dans la conception de programmes et projets.
