Women Human Rights Defenders

WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.

The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.

Risks and threats targeting WHRDs  

WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.

By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:

  • Physical assault and death
  • Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
  • Judicial harassment and criminalization
  • Burnout

A collaborative, holistic approach to safety

We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership

  • to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
  • to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk

We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:

  • emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
  • documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
  • promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
  • building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles

Our Actions

We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.

  • Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to  strengthen  responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.

  • Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa  Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;

  • Increasing the visibility and recognition of  WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:

  • Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

Originaire d'Inde, Janette était une personne formidable, fougueuse, bienveillante et aimante.

Son intolérance à l’égard de l’injustice et sa ferme volonté de défendre les droits de toutes les personnes l’ont amenée à travailler pour TARSHI (une ONG qui travaille sur la sexualité et la santé sexuelle et reproductive) pendant plus de 15 ans. Janette a géré et dirigé avec compétence les aspects financiers, les ressources humaines et les aspects opérationnels de TARSHI, naviguant adroitement dans la bureaucratie labyrinthique à laquelle sont soumises les ONG indiennes.

Son équipe se souvient « elle assurait nos arrières pour que nous puissions naviguer en eaux libres. Femme aux multiples talents, Janette nous a non seulement aidés à acquérir nos propres bureaux, mais elles les a également aménagés pour leur utilisation optimale. Elle aimait les voyages et les animaux et s'intéressait à la thérapie assistée par les animaux ».

Como parte de nuestro compromiso de lograr una interacción más profunda con artistas y la práctica de la creación conjunta de las Realidades Feministas, AWID colaboró con un para promover y fortalecer las agendas y realidades feministas en sus comunidades y movimientos a través de sus expresiones creativas. Nuestra intención en este punto es reunir a creativxs feministas en un espacio pujante y valiente donde puedan desarrollarse y vivir en libertad, y donde puedan romper las narrativas tóxicas para sustituirlas por alternativas transformadoras. 

Esta exhibición reúne la obra de artistas y colectivos de todo el globo que están creando activamente la diferencia que queremos ver plasmada en el mundo. Entre estxs creativxs feministas se encuentran Upasana Agarwal, Nicole Barakat, Siphumeze Khundayi, Katia Herrera, Ali Chavez Leeds, el Colectivo Morivivi, Ika Vantiani, y lxs curadorxs detrás de la exhibición #MeToo en China. Sus voces se mantienen firmes en su rechazo a aceptar las limitaciones que impone el patriarcado, y para amplificar sus compromisos con las comunidades con las que trabajan. A su propio modo, cada obra de arte representa los actos cotidianos de resistencia, las historias e identidades que no se han narrado, las conexiones con la tierra y lo ancestral y, lo que es más importante, la solidaridad que existe en el interior de las luchas y los movimientos feministas y entre ellos. Estxs artistas se inspiran en y a la vez inspiran estrategias creativas de  resistencia e iniciativas feministas que nos muestran cómo podemos vivir en un mundo más justo, un mundo que pone en el centro los cuidados y la sanación.

Biography

Sanyu is a Pan-African feminist based in Nairobi, Kenya. She has spent the last decade supporting labour, feminist and human rights movements advocating for corporate accountability, economic justice and gender justice. She has worked with the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, IWRAW Asia Pacific and the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative. She has a Master’s of Laws in Human Rights Law and a Bachelor’s of Laws from the University of Nottingham. Her writing has been published in the Business and Human Rights Journal, Human Rights Law Review, Open Global Rights, Open Democracy and more. In her free time, she loves walking in the forest and chasing butterflies.

From Peacebuild to the Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action, Amnesty International, and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA), Kate had a lifelong passion for women’s rights and gender equality and dedicated her career to fighting inequality and making the world a more compassionate place.

Kate was a member of the Coordinating Committee of Social Watch and a contributor to the Canadian National Social Watch reports.  As a Senior Researcher at the CCPA, Kate received national acclaim for researching, writing, and producing the annual “The Best and Worst Places to be a Woman in Canada” report.

Kate died peacefully surrounded by her family, following a three-year battle with colon cancer. She is described by loved ones as a “Funny, Fearless, Unapologetically Feminist.”

Veena Singh es una isleña de Fiyi, feminista y mujer de color Nacida y criada en un pequeño pueblo rural de Fiyi, su fuerza proviene de su rica herencia mixta (su madre es una mujer fiyiana indígena y su padre es fiyiano de ascendencia India).  La identidad y las experiencias vividas de Veena han influido profundamente en su compromiso con la justicia, la equidad y la inclusión.   Con más de dos décadas de experiencia en derechos humanos, igualdad de género, desarrollo comunitario e inclusión social, Veena es una activista apasionada por la reconfiguración del poder para crear un cambio transformativo y construir una «economía de la amabilidad» Su trabajo se expande por diversas áreas que incluyen: desarrollo comunitario, mujeres, paz y seguridad, políticas sociales, derechos humanos y defensa de políticas. 

Veena está profundamente comprometida en hacer avanzar la inclusión, la paz y la justicia, los derechos sexuales y por la justicia reproductiva (SRHR, por sus siglas en inglés), la justicia climática y los derechos humanos.  Aporta un gran acervo de experiencia trabajando con redes de base, organizaciones internacionales e instituciones gubernamentales, siempre con foco en los abordajes locales y liderados por la comunidad y los principios feministas. 

Fuera de su ‘vida de oficina’, Veena es activista por el medio ambiente, defensora de la salud mental y escritora.  Es la mamá de 11 gatos, se viste con sari y es amante del correo postal y las postales.  Como observadora atenta de los movimientos feministas en Fiyi y el Pacífico, Veena está en un recorrido personal para «decolonizar la mente y el yo a través de la autoreflexión radical» Sobre todo, la impulsa el deseo y el sueño de producir una escritura convocante y resonante que conecte con la diáspora del Pacífico y difunda las voces de los márgenes.

Madiha fue una destacada profesora de Sociología con activa participación en la sociedad civil como defensora de los derechos de las mujeres en la región árabe.

Presidió la Alianza para las Mujeres Árabes y dentro del Consejo Nacional de Mujeres fue miembro del Comité de la Sociedad Civil y del Comité para el Desarrollo de la Gobernación de Minia. Fue autora de numerosas publicaciones en las que analizó y arrojó luz sobre las desigualdades de género y la discriminación contra las mujeres.

Es recordada con cariño por colegas, estudiantes y amigxs.

Considérée par le Guardian comme l'une des icônes nationales de Kiribati, Teresia était une avocate téméraire.

Elle travaillait en étroite collaboration avec des groupes féministes aux îles Fidji. Ses travaux de recherche ont servi à aborder les problèmes du féminisme et de l'égalité de genre dans le Pacifique. Elle était également corédactrice de l’International Feminist Journal of Politics. En Océanie, son influence a traversé les frontières académiques, ainsi que les mouvements pour la justice sociale.

Biography

Ekaete Judith Umoh es una defensora internacional de los derechos de las personas con discapacidad y experta en desarrollo inclusivo, con un agudo análisis de las cuestiones relativas al género, la discapacidad y el desarrollo inclusivo. Su sueño es aumentar la visibilidad de las mujeres y niñas con discapacidad dentro del movimiento feminista internacional y en todos las iniciativas para el desarrollo en el mundo.

Ekaete disfruta con el activismo y la política, y llegó a convertirse en la primera mujer elegida presidenta de la Asociación Nacional Conjunta de Personas con Discapacidad -JONAPWD(www.jonapwd.org ), en Nigeria, donde lideró a organizaciones por los derechos de las personas con discapacidad en las luchas por convertir en ley el Proyecto de Ley de Prohibición de la Discriminación contra las Personas con Discapacidad en Nigeria, tras más de 17 años de trabajo constante de incidencia. Posteriormente, se incorporó a CBM Global como Directora de País pionera y dirigió su equipo durante unos tres años, contribuyendo a acabar con el círculo de pobreza y discapacidad en Nigeria. Aparte del activismo en defensa de las personas con discapacidad, Ekaete ha trabajado como consultora para varias agencias de desarrollo, proporcionando asistencia técnica sobre la inclusión de la discapacidad en el diseño de programas y proyectos.

Amal was a prominent politician and parliamentarian in Libya. She was a faculty member at Benghazi University from 1995 until her death in 2017.

Amal was a civil society activist and a member of various social and political initiatives. She assisted the families of martyrs and the  disappeared, and was a founding member of a youth initiative called ‘’Youth of Benghazi Libya”. In the 2014 parliamentary elections, Amal was elected to the House of Representatives with more than 14,000 votes (the highest number of votes anyone received in the 2014 elections).

Amal will remain in the memories of many as a woman politician working to ensure a better future in one the most difficult and conflict-ridden contexts in the region.
