Women Human Rights Defenders
WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.
The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.
Risks and threats targeting WHRDs
WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.
By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:
- Physical assault and death
- Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
- Judicial harassment and criminalization
- Burnout
A collaborative, holistic approach to safety
We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership
- to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
- to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk
We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:
- emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
- documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
- promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
- building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles
Our Actions
We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.

Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to strengthen responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.

Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;

Increasing the visibility and recognition of WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:

Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

Nous sommes ravis de partager notre nouveau Plan stratégique (2023-2027) avec tout le monde. Bien tôt, AWID fera une annonce pour informer notre communauté et nos membres.
L’Association pour les droits des femmes dans le développement (AWID) est une organisation féministe, associative et internationale de soutien aux mouvements.
Depuis plus de 35 ans, l’AWID fait partie d’un incroyable écosystème des mouvements féministes qui oeuvrent en faveur de la justice de genre et des droits humains des femmes à travers le monde.
Notre vision
L’AWID imagine un monde où les réalités féministes prospèrent, où les ressources et le pouvoir sont partagés de façon à permettre à chacun-e, y compris aux générations futures, de s’épanouir et de réaliser leur plein potentiel dans la dignité, l’amour et le respect et où la Terre nourrit la vie dans toute sa diversité.
Notre mission
Notre mission est d’aider les mouvements féministes, en faveur des droits des femmes et de la justice de genre à s’épanouir, à être un élément moteur de l’opposition aux systèmes d’oppression et à co-créer des réalités féministes.

Nous promouvons notre travail au travers des stratégies suivantes:
Plaidoyer et campagnes
Nous tirons collectivement parti de notre portée, de notre pouvoir, de nos ressources et de nos relations afin d’influencer stratégiquement les politiques et les pratiques. Nous visons à promouvoir les programmes féministes à travers les collaborations que nous menons avec les décideurs politiques, les fonda-trices-teurs et les activistes au sein des espaces régionaux et internationaux. Dans le cadre des efforts que nous déployons pour renforcer notre pouvoir et influence collectifs, nous incitons également les mouvements féministes et de lutte pour les droits des femmes à accorder une place centrale aux mouvements historiquement opprimés.
Rassemblement et coopération
Nous nous servons de notre pouvoir mobilisateur pour faciliter le dialogue et élaborer des stratégies sur des questions clés. Nous connectons nos membres et nos allié-e-s les une-s- aux autres, et partageons et échangeons nos ressources, nos idées et nos actions sur des questions pertinentes. Nous organisons des rassemblements et mettons à disposition des espaces nous permettant de consolider nos mouvements et de nouer des rapports les un-e-s avec les autres, d’imaginer et d’envisager de nouveaux horizons, de développer des stratégies d’influence efficaces et de créer ensemble des programmes et des processus importants.
Solidarité et construction de liens
Nous mobilisons nos membres et les mouvements que nous soutenons pour consolider l’action collective en solidarité avec les causes et les défenseur-e-s féministes en danger. Nous créons des partenariats, pratiquons l’écoute active et tissons des liens de solidarité continus et sur le long terme. Aux côtés de défenseur-e-s, nous oeuvrons à établir une base de connaissances et à soutenir des réseaux de solidarité autour de la protection et du bien-être.
Arts et expression créative
Nous reconnaissons la valeur unique des stratégies culturelles et créatives dans la lutte contre les oppressions et l’injustice. Nous travaillons avec des artistes qui accordent une place prépondérante aux voix féministes et aux récits des communautés historiquement opprimées. Nous voyons en cette tactique émergente l’art et l’expression créative comme autant de moyens nous permettant d’imaginer un monde où l’on continue de célébrer des réalités féministes, et où ces dernières continuent de prospérer.

Nos initiatives oeuvrent à l’intersection des zones de changement que nous abordons, des mouvements que nous priorisons et des stratégies que nous déployons:
Promotion des droits universels et de la justice
Nous surveillons, documentons et visibilisons la façon dont les acteurs anti-droits opèrent et conspirent au sein des espaces multilatéraux, et soutenons les mouvements et allié-e-s féministes, oeuvrant en faveur des droits des femmes et de la justice de genre pour contrer leur influence et leur impact.
Construction d’économies féministes
En travaillant sur l’extractivisme, la justice fiscale et la responsabilisation des entreprises, nous acquérons des connaissances sur le pouvoir des entreprises et leur influence; nous plaidons pour la responsabilisation des entreprises et la distribution équitable des richesses; et amplifions les propositions féministes en faveur d’économies plus justes.
Ressources des mouvements féministes
Nous développons des analyses accessibles et orientées vers l’action concernant l’état des ressources attribuées aux mouvements féministes. Nous nous efforçons d’influencer les pratiques et politiques des donateurs, d’approfondir et maintenir les subventions en faveur de changements sociaux féministes et de soutenir les besoins et les stratégies des mouvements.
L’AWID s’engage expressément à avoir de l’impact dans le monde et à renforcer nos propres résiliences et apprentissages organisationnels afin de consolider davantage les mouvements féministes internationaux.

Remembering: A Tribute to WHRDs no longer with us
AWID honors feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) who have died and whose contributions to the advancement of human rights are very much missed.
Celebrating Activists and WHRDs
AWID’s WHRD Tribute is a photo exhibition featuring feminist, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us.
The Tribute was first launched in 2012, at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away. The initiative was described by Forum participants as being a unique, moving and energizing way to commemorate our collective history.
At the 13th International Forum in Brazil, we honored activists and WHRDs with a mural unveiling ceremony in four languages, a dance performance and a Brazilian ritual.
In between the events, the Tribute lives as an online gallery that is updated every year as part of the 16 Days Campaign Against Gender Based Violence (25 November – 10 December).
Contributions from all over the world
Since 2012, through our annual Tribute to Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) no longer with us, over 400 feminists and WHRDs from 11 regions and 80 countries have been featured.
AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these women and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

The violence and threaths against WHRDs persist
In addition to paying homage to these incredible activists, the Tribute particularly sheds light on the plight of WHRDs who have been assassinated or disappeared.
One third of those featured in the Tribute were activists who have been murdered or disappeared in suspicious circumstances. They were specifically targeted for who they were and the work they did to challenge:
- State power
- Heteronormativity
- Fundamentalisms
- Corporations
- Patriarchy
- Organized Crime
- Corruption
- Militarization…
Women like Agnes Torres, from Mexico, was killed because of her gender identity and sexual orientation; or Cheryl Ananayo, an environmental activist from the Philippines was assassinated as she struggled against a mining company; or Ruqia Hassan, a Syrian independent journalist and blogger killed for her criticism of ISIS. And so many others.
With the WHRD Tribute, we bring them all into our collective memory and carry their legacy of struggle as our torch in the feminists’ and women’s rights movements. We recognize that security, safety and self-care must be a priority in all our political agendas. And we call on to governments and international bodies to collectively address violence against feminists and WHRDs.
We believe this is a critical step to ensure the sustainability of our movements for gender equality, women’s rights, and justice for all.

So'oalo fue una ferviente defensora de los derechos humanos, especialmente de los derechos de la comunidad LGBTQI en el Pacífico.
Fue integrante de la Asociación Fa’afafine de Samoa (SFA) y una apasionada activista por el reconocimiento de un tercer género en el país insular. Bajo su liderazgo, la SFA luchó por el reconocimiento de la validez y los derechos de la comunidad fa’afafine.
También fue pionera en articular los vínculos entre derechos humanos, explotación de lxs fa’afafines en Samoa y el Pacífico y la salud, el bienestar y la seguridad de la comunidad LGBTQI.
Fue fuente de inspiración, visionaria y su dedicación a la lucha por los derechos de su comunidad es admirable y será recordada por siempre.

Глобальный опрос «Где деньги для феминистских объединений?» является ключевым элементом третьего этапа нашего исследования, ориентированного на конкретные действия: «Где деньги для феминистских объединений» (короткое название – «Где деньги?»). Результаты опроса будут доработаны и обстоятельно изучены в ходе бесед с активистами и донорами, а также сопоставлены с другими имеющимися аналитическими материалами и исследованиями о состоянии ресурсов феминистских движений и инициатив по достижению гендерного равенства во всем мире.

Why did AWID choose Taipei as the location for the Forum?
We see Taipei as the location in the Asia Pacific region that will best allow us to build that safe and rebelious space for our global feminist community.
Taipei offers a moderate degree of stability and safety for the diversity of Forum participants we will convene. It also has strong logistical capacities, and is accessible for many travellers (with a facilitated e-visa process for international conferences).
The local feminist movement is welcoming of the Forum and keen to engage with feminists from across the globe.

Samira Khalil
Samira était une activiste syrienne sous le régime de Bachar al-Asad.
Dès son plus jeune âge, Samira s'est opposée à toutes les formes de despotisme et en particulier au régime autoritaire dans lequel elle vivait. Samira a été kidnappée en 2013 avec trois autres activistes de premier plan. Elle aurait été enlevée au Centre de documentation sur les violations à Douma, une ville située en périphérie rurale de Damas.
Le principal suspect associé à sa disparition est le groupe rebelle syrien Jaych al-Islam (l'armée de l'islam), qui nie son implication. Aucune enquête officielle n’a été ouverte sur la disparition de Samira et elle n’a plus donné de nouvelles depuis lors. Samira était attachée à son pays et refusait de quitter la Syrie tant qu'elle estimait que son rôle en faveur de l'émancipation des femmes et la documentation des crimes était utile et nécessaire.

7 Women Human Rights Defenders from across the South and Southeast Asian region are honored in this year’s Online Tribute. These defenders have made key contributions to advancing human and women’s rights, indigenous people’s rights, and the right to education.
