Women Human Rights Defenders
WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.
The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.
Risks and threats targeting WHRDs
WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.
By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:
- Physical assault and death
- Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
- Judicial harassment and criminalization
- Burnout
A collaborative, holistic approach to safety
We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership
- to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
- to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk
We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:
- emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
- documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
- promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
- building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles
Our Actions
We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.

Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to strengthen responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.

Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;

Increasing the visibility and recognition of WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:

Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

No care economies without domestic workers!
A Manifesto
As feminist and labour movements, together in solidarity, we articulate the following points as a collective vision for care economies with domestic workers rights at the centre. We call on feminist and social movements to join the call to rethink the economy with care at its centre recognising the rights, agency and leadership of domestic worker movements.
Our manifesto is a response to a complex context.
Domestic and care work is in the limelight after the COVID-19 global pandemic as it provided the means to carry the world through multiple intersecting crises at the global scale. The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and other multilateral institutions also acknowledge the importance of care and domestic work in sustaining the world’s economy. However, it is our analysis that this recognition most often takes an instrumentalist approach (i.e. care work sustains the ‘productive’ economy) focused on profiteering from care work without recognizing care as a human right and public good, or providing recognition and rights to the workers undertaking the bulk of this labour.

Construcción de economías feministas
La Construcción de Economías Feministas se trata de crear un mundo con aire limpio para respirar y agua limpia para beber, con trabajo significativo y cuidado para nosotrxs y nuestras comunidades, donde todxs podamos disfrutar de nuestra autonomía económica, sexual y política.
En el mundo en que vivimos hoy, la economía sigue dependiendo del trabajo de cuidado no remunerado o subvalorado que realizan las mujeres para ganancia de otrxs. La búsqueda del «crecimiento» solo expande el extractivismo, un modelo de desarrollo basado en la extracción y explotación masiva de los recursos naturales que sigue destruyendo a las personas y al planeta mientras concentra la riqueza en manos de las elites globales. Mientras tanto, el acceso a la salud, a la educación, a un salario digno y a la seguridad social se están convirtiendo en el privilegio de pocxs. Este modelo económico se asienta sobre la supremacía blanca, el colonialismo y el patriarcado.
Adoptar solamente un «enfoque de empoderamiento económico de las mujeres» es solo integrar aún más a las mujeres a este sistema. Ese ‘empoderamiento’ puede ser un medio temporal de supervivencia, pero debemos plantar las semillas que hagan que otro mundo sea posible mientras derribamos los muros del que ya existe.
Creemos en la capacidad de los movimientos feministas de trabajar para el cambio con alianzas amplias que atraviesen distintos movimientos sociales. Al amplificar las propuestas y visiones feministas, nuestro objetivo es construir nuevos paradigmas para economías justas.
Nuestro enfoque debe ser interconectado e interseccional, porque la autonomía sexual y corporal no será posible hasta que todxs y cada unx de nosotrxs disfrute de sus derechos e independencia económicos. Queremos trabajar con quienes resisten y enfrentan el auge mundial de la derecha conservadora y de los fundamentalismos religiosos, porque no es posible ninguna economía justa hasta que no hagamos crujir las bases del actual sistema.

Promovemos agendas feministas: Enfrentamos al poder corporativo y su impunidad por los abusos de derechos humanos trabajando con aliadxs. Así nos asegurarnos de llevar a los espacios de decisión política las perspectivas feministas, de derechos de las mujeres y de justicia de género. Un ejemplo sobre el que puedes leer más es nuestro trabajo sobre el futuro instrumento legalmente vinculante sobre las «corporaciones transnacionales y otras empresas comerciales con respecto a los derechos humanos», en el Consejo de Derechos Humanos de las Naciones Unidas.

Movilizamos acciones solidarias: Trabajamos para fortalecer los vínculos entre los movimientos feministas y por la justicia impositiva, incluyendo el reclamo de que los recursos públicos perdidos a través de los flujos financieros ilícitos (IFFs, por sus siglas en inglés) sean usados para asegurar la justicia social y de género.

Construimos conocimiento: Brindamos a las defensoras de derechos humanos información estratégica que es vital para enfrentar el poder corporativo y el extractivismo. Contribuiremos a construir conocimiento acerca del financiamiento local y global para el extractivismo,y los mecanismos de inversión que lo sostienen.

Creamos y difundimos alternativas: Movilizamos a nuestra membresía y a los movimientos imaginando de manera colectiva economías feministas, y compartiendo conocimientos, prácticas y agendas feministas por la justicia económica.

Seismic shifts: A year of completion, transition and reflection | Annual report 2017
The past five years have been huge for AWID.
We have contributed to some major victories, like expanding the women’s rights funding landscape with ground-breaking, far-reaching research and advocacy. At the same time, we have experienced some devastating setbacks, including the assassination of Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) like Berta Cacares of Honduras, Gauri Lankesh of India and Marielle Franco of Brazil, as well as the rise of anti-rights mobilizing in human rights spaces.
Five years ago, we committed to our movement-building role by producing knowledge on anti-rights movement trends, as well as on issues that feminists often engage with less, like illicit financial flows. We advocated side by side with our movement partners, strengthening young feminist and inter-generational activism, and expanding the holistic protection of WHRDs. As we close out the strategic plan, we are proud of our accomplishments and our growth as an organization. We end 2017 with renewed commitment, insights and learning for the continued struggle ahead!

Margarita is a feminist and LGBTIQA activist from Latin America; her passion is social transformation and collective wellbeing. She holds degrees in Psychology, Communications and Public Administration, as well as certificates in Public Policy, Leadership, Management & Decision Making. In her professional capacity, Margarita has had extensive experience with grassroots organizations, national and regional NGOs, universities and the public sector, developing facilitation, capacity building, political advocacy, communications & policy assessment.

About Where is the Money? research
The global survey is a key pillar of the third iteration of our action-oriented research: “Where is the Money for Feminist Organizing?” (in short, Where is the Money or WITM). The results of the survey will be further elaborated and explored through in-depth conversations with activists and funders and cross-referenced with other existing analysis and research on the state of funding for feminists and gender equality globally.

Patience Chabururuka
Biography
Patience is a global human resources professional with over a decade of experience in human resources (HR) management in the not-for-profit sector. Patience previously worked at Mercy Corps as the Global HR Officer for Africa supporting the full employee life cycle for expatriates in the Eastern and Southern African region and provided HR technical guidance to Human Resources leaders in country offices within the African region. Before joining the global people team, she was the Country Human Resources and Safeguarding Focal Point, she was part of the senior management team leading on all human resources and safeguarding matters. Prior to Mercy Corps she led the HR and Operations department at SNV Netherlands Development Organization and was a member of the country management team. She also has HR Consultancy experience which she gained while she was still studying for her BSc Honors degree in Human Resource Management. She has a passion for HR, loves working with people and she takes wellbeing and safeguarding as her core values and in her professional work. As someone who loves sports, you can also find Patience at the basketball court, the tennis court or on the soccer field.

We recognize and appreciate different reasons why feminists, in their respective contexts, don’t have external funding: from being ineligible to apply for grants and/or receive money from abroad, to relying on resources generated autonomously as a political strategy in its own right. Nana Abuelsoud
Biography
Nana is a feminist organizer and a reproductive rights and population policy researcher based in Egypt. She is a member of Realizing Sexual and Reproductive Justice (RESURJ), a member of the Advisory Board of the A Project in Lebanon, and a member of the Community Committee of Mama Cash. Nana holds an MSc in Public Health from KIT Institute and Vrije University in Amsterdam. In her work, she follows and contextualizes national population policies while building evidence that addresses modern eugenics, regressive international aid, and authoritarianism. Previously, she was part of the Geneva Foundation for Medical Education and Research, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, and Ikhtyar Feminist Collective in Cairo.

Why did AWID decide to change the Forum location from Bali to Taipei?
Events in Indonesia, in late 2019 - in particular, signs of intensifying militarization and backlash against LGBTQ rights - led us to question AWID’s ability to maintain a reasonably safe and welcoming environment for the diversity of participants we aspire to bring together at the Forum.
After careful consideration the AWID Board of Directors decided to change the venue for the 14th International AWID Forum, in November 2019 from Bali to Taipei.
Taipei offers a strong degree of logistical capacities, and is accessible for many travellers (with a facilitated e-visa process for international conferences).

AWID en 2016: Co-créer nos horizons féministes
En 2016, nous nous sommes réuni-e-s pour le 13e forum international de l’AWID, à Bahia au Brésil, qui a accueilli 1 800 participant-e-s venu-e-s de 120 pays et territoires à travers le monde. Le Forum a servi d’espace essentiel pour la mise en place de stratégies et la constitution d’alliances au sein des mouvements féministes et d’autres mouvement de justice.
Nous savons que les droits des femmes et les mouvements féministes sont des éléments moteurs pour l’instauration d’un changement transformateur durable. Au sein de nos mouvements, l’organisation, la résistance et la réponse au difficile contexte se précisent, et dans ce monde de plus en plus connecté, le potentiel des actions collectives de mouvements divers s’est fortement accru. C’est précisément là le travail essentiel que l’AWID cherche à amplifier et à soutenir.
Nous cherchons à informer et outiller les organisations et mouvements de droits des femmes afin de les aider à être en mesure de répondre aux opportunités qui se présentent et de contrecarrer les menaces. Nous appuyons une visibilité accrue et une meilleure compréhension des initiatives pour les droits des femmes et les menaces auxquelles elles font face, et nous oeuvrons également à influer sur les acteur-trice-s et les institutions qui façonnent le devenir des droits de la personne et du développement.
Ce que nous avons réalisé en 2016
Élargissement de la solidarité et actions conjointes de divers mouvements
Le 13e forum international innovant de l’AWID s’est tenu du 8 au 11 septembre 2016 à Bahia, au Brésil, sur le thème : « Horizons féministes ; Construire un
pouvoir collectif pour les droits et la justice ».
Bien qu’une grande partie de l’énergie de l’AWID ait été investie en 2016 dans la tenue du Forum, la réflexion et l’énergie de près de 500 partenaires, intervenant-e-s, animateur-trice-s, artivistes, facilitateur-trice-s, écrivain-e-s, innovateur-trice-s en TI, performeur-euse-s, dont beaucoup sont des meneur-euse-s dans leur domaine, ont été mises à profit. Et en reconnaissance du passé et du combat de Bahia, nous avons accueilli deux jours de Forum des Féminismes Noirs , à l’initiative d’un groupe de travail de féministes Noires du monde entier.
Des connaissances approfondies des problématiques et des stratégies

À propos du défi au pouvoir corporatif : Nous avons publié Contester le pouvoir corporatif : Les luttes pour les droits des femmes, la justice économique et la justice de genre avec le Solidarity Center, qui dévoile la portée et l’ampleur du pouvoir corporatif et souligne comment la collusion qu’entretiennent les entreprises nationales et transnationales avec les élites et autres puissant- e-s acteur-trice-s influence les vies des femmes et des peuples opprimés. Ce rapport présente des clés de stratégies de résistances, en soulignant cinq combats qui se sont saisis de la collaboration entre mouvements pour contester le pouvoir corporatif.

Sur les économies féministes : Nous avons publié Propositions féministes pour une économie juste avec le Centre pour le leadership mondial des femmes (CWGL en anglais) et le Réseau de Développement et de Communication des Femmes Africaines FEMNET.

Sur l’opposition aux fondamentalismes : Le Diable est dans les détails : à la croisée du développement, des droits des femmes et des fondamentalismes religieux détaille la façon dont les fondamentalismes religieux entravent le développement et les droits des femmes en particulier, et offre des recommandations aux acteur-trice-s du développement pour le renforcement des droits des femmes.

Sur le thème de l’activisme des jeunes féministes : Avec FRIDA, nous avons lancé Courageuses, créatives, résilientes : les organisations de jeunes féministes dans le monde : un état de lieux à l’occasion du Pôle d’activisme des jeunes féministes lors du Forum de l’AWID. Ce projet de cartographie des jeunes féministes s’appuie sur les données collectées dans 1 360 demandes de subventions reçues par FRIDA entre 2012 et 2014, qui incluaient 694 interlocutrices issues de 118 pays différents !
Plaidoyer collectif
l’AWID, en partenariat avec d’autres organisations féministes et de droits des femmes, a lancé des actions de plaidoyer et de dialogue afin de rechercher de meilleures solutions pour les programmes de droits des femmes, dont le travail avec le consortium .Count Me In!
Amélioration de la visibilité des mouvements
Les expériences des femmes en situation de handicap, les femmes Noires et Afro-descendantes, les travailleuses du sexe, les femmes Autochtones, les personnes trans et intersexes, les travailleuses domestiques, et la manière dont leurs vies sont impactées par les nombreuses oppressions et la violence ont été placées au centre et au premier plan du processus du Forum.
Au cours des 16 jours d’activisme, et grâce aux contributions de nos incroyables membres, nous avons lancé l’Hommage aux défenseur-e-s des droits humains des femmes 2016 pour honorer la mémoire des défenseur-e-s qui nous ont quitté- e-s.
Notre partenariat avec The Guardian et Cash Mama : la section sur les droits des femmes et l’égalité de genre (en anglais) sur le portail du développement dans le monde du Guardian a permis d’attirer davantage d’attention sur les groupes et les problématiques qui ne font généralement pas l’objet d’une couverture médiatique adéquate.
